Iran exports products worth $6.9b to Iraq in 9 months

According to Mohammad Rezvanifar, Iraq was the second top export destination of Iranian products in that nine-month period.

As previously announced by an official with Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization (TPO), the value of Iran’s export to Iraq increased by 15 percent in the past Iranian calendar year 1401 (ended on March 20, 2023).

Farzad Piltan, the director-general of TPO’s Office of West Asian Countries, said that based on the data released by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration, Iran exported commodities worth over $10 billion to its neighbor in the previous year.

By stating that Iraq is one of the strategic partners of Iran in the field of foreign trade and especially exports, he put the value of Iran’s import from Iraq at about $200 million in the past year.

Considering Iran’s vast export capacity and Iraq’s large market for Iranian goods, both sides want to expand the volume of bilateral economic exchanges.

Iran and Iraq have set a target of $20 billion in annual trade, and businessmen and authorities of both countries are determined to meet that target, Head of the Iran-Iraq Joint Chamber of Commerce Yahya Ale-Es’haq has stated.

“In general, Iran and Iraq have agreed to improve relations and change the monetary and banking conditions so that the central banks of the two countries will ease the current situation and solve the problems,” he has noted.

The current administration of Iran under President Raisi has shown great interest in broadening and enhancing trade and economic ties with neighboring states, Ale Es’haq has emphasized.

In late September, 2023, Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization (TPO) hosted an Iran-Iraq business conference in which officials from the two sides discussed ways of expanding mutual business relations.

Speaking at the conference, TPO Head Mehdi Zeyghami stressed the need to balance the trade between the two countries, saying: “The level of trade and economic relations between Iran and Iraq has increased significantly in recent years, and the figure can be increased up to 40 billion dollars if the two sides’ trade is balanced.”

The government of Iran is ready to cooperate with Iraq for the industrial development of the country in the 2035 horizon, he noted, saying: “Iran is ready to transfer technology to Iraq and develop industrial projects in the country.”

“We hope to achieve the goals outlined by the presidents of the two countries by solving issues related to logistics and financial transactions,” the official added.

Iran and Iraq have stressed the need to use the national currencies of the two countries to enhance mutual trade relations.

During a meeting between Iran’s Minister of Industry, Mining and Trade Abbas Ali-Abadi and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani in Baghdad on October 31, 2023 the two sides emphasized using the national currencies for bilateral trade exchanges.

In the meeting, which took place in the Iraqi Prime Minister’s office in Baghdad, the economic relations between the two countries and ways to strengthen them and strengthen exchanges and partnerships at different levels were discussed and explored.

In a statement issued at the time, the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Office said, “Today, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani hosted Iran’s Minister of Industry, Mining and Trade Abbas Ali-Abadi. In this meeting, the two sides explored avenues for strengthening bilateral relations and bolstering mutual trade exchanges and participating in various fields.”

The Iraqi prime minister expressed his country’s readiness to expand bilateral cooperation in the fields of petrochemical industries and fertilizers.

According to this statement, Iran’s minister of industry, while conveying the warm greetings of Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, emphasized the need for advancing trade and economic projects in the face of existing economic challenges in the region and the world.

2023 "Most Violent" Year On Record For Israeli Settler Attacks: Report

2023 'Most Violent' Year On Record For Israeli Settler Attacks: Report

Over 520 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank in 2023: Palestinian health ministry

Jerusalem, Undefined:

Israeli settlers killed at least 10 Palestinians and torched dozens of homes in the occupied West Bank in 2023, making it the “most violent” year on record for settler attacks, an Israeli watchdog said Monday.

Numerous West Bank attacks were carried out by a large group of Israeli settlers, and the violence spiked after Hamas’s October 7 attacks on Israel, said Yesh Din, a human rights group.

“At least 10 Palestinians were killed by settlers and dozens of homes and vehicles were set on fire” last year, it said.

“2023 was the most violent year in settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank in both the number of incidents and their severity.”

The West Bank has been under Israeli military occupation since the 1967 Six-Day War, and tensions have escalated since the outbreak of fighting between Israel and the Gaza Strip’s Hamas rulers.

About 490,000 settlers live among approximately three million Palestinians in the West Bank, in settlements that are considered illegal under international law.

Yesh Din began monitoring settler violence against Palestinians in 2006.

“The first two months since October 7 were particularly violent, with Yesh Din documenting 242 settler violence incidents,” it said, referring to the day when Hamas launched a series of deadly attacks on Israel from the Gaza Strip.

“In these incidents, hundreds of Israelis raided Palestinian villages, setting fire to dozens of homes and vehicles,” the watchdog said.

‘Lack of trust’

At least 317 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli security forces and settlers in the West Bank since the Gaza war began, according to Ramallah-based Palestinian health ministry.

Yesh Din refuted claims made by the military and police that there had been a decrease in settler violence in recent months, saying those numbers reflected a drop in complaints filed to Israeli authorities.

Since the current right-wing Israeli government came to power in December 2022, more Palestinians have expressed a “lack of trust” in Israeli law enforcement authorities in the West Bank, it said.

“Settler violence is the policy of the Israeli government,” the watchdog charged about the ruling coalition of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu which includes settlers and ultra-nationalist hardliners.

Last month the United States said it would refuse visas for extremist Israeli settlers who attack Palestinians, stepping up pressure to curb the wave of violence in the West Bank.

Palestinian attacks in Israel and the West Bank, meanwhile, have killed at least 41 people in 2023, according to the Shin Bet security agency.

More than 520 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank in 2023, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Wrong To Say Collegium System Lacks Transparency: Chief Justice

'Easy To Criticise Process...': Chief Justice On Judges' Appointment System

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said steps have been taken to ensure greater transparency

New Delhi:

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Monday defended the collegium system of judges appointing judges to the higher judiciary, asserting that steps have been taken to ensure greater transparency.

In an exclusive interview with the news agency PTI, the CJI said it is very easy to criticise the process but every effort is being made by the collegium to ensure the due process of consultation is followed before the appointment of a judge.

“To say that the collegium system is lacking in transparency would not be correct. We have taken steps to ensure that greater transparency is maintained. A sense of objectivity in the decision-making process is maintained. But I must also share something and that’s my caveat. When we consider judges for the appointment in Supreme Court, we are dealing with the careers of the sitting judges of the high court.

“Therefore the deliberations that take place within the collegium can’t be put out in the public realm for a variety of reasons. Many of our discussions are on the privacy of those judges who are under consideration for appointment to the Supreme Court. Those deliberations, if they have to take place in a free and candid atmosphere, can’t be the subject matter of video recording or documentation. That is not the system which the Indian Constitution has adopted,” Chief Justice Chandrachud said.

The CJI said keeping in mind the diverse society, it is also important that we learn to trust our decision making process.

“It is very easy to criticise the process but now that I have been part of the process for several years I can share with you that every effort is being made by our judges to ensure due process of consultation is made before the appointment of a judge,” he said.

Chief Justice Chandrachud said as the Chief Justice of India he was bound by the Constitution and by the law laid down by the top court interpreting it.

“We have the collegium system for the appointment of judges which has now been part of our jurisprudence since 1993 and that is the system that we implement. But having said that, it is equally our duty as present members of the collegium system to maintain and make it more transparent. To make it more objective. And we have taken steps, decisive steps in that regard.

“All resolutions of the collegium are put on the website so that people know the decisions we take. And that promotes transparency. We have again put in the public realm the parameters which the collegium applies in the selection of judges to the Supreme Court. And many of the parameters apply in high courts,” he said.

Chief Justice Chandrachud said the Supreme Court’s Centre for Research and Planning assists the collegium in compiling data about judges who are in the zone of consideration, and it prepares a comprehensive document which is circulated among members of the collegium which helps them in evaluating judges whose names come up for consideration.

Airport Metro, Pharma City not scrapped: CM Revanth Reddy

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy went back on his earlier statements on Monday, and said there were no plans to scrap the Airport Metro Rail and the Hyderabad Pharma City projects proposed by the previous BRS government. Instead, the State government would work on streamlining these projects keeping the larger public interest in mind, he said.

Revanth Reddy had earlier opposed the Airport Metro Rail and the Pharma City projects during his campaign for the Assembly polls. During a review meeting held shortly after he took over as the Chief Minister of Telangana as well, he had directed officials to keep on hold both these projects. He also asked them probe into benefits extended to the construction agency (L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited), despite not completing the proposed routes. He wanted officials to develop a new township in the huge tracts of lands acquired for Hyderabad Pharma City.

However, during a chit chat with media at the Secretariat here on Monday, the Chief Minister took a complete U-turn and said the projects were not being cancelled or put on hold.

“We are streamlining it keeping in mind public interest. In comparison to the routes proposed by the previous government, we will reduce the distance to the airport and the project cost as well,” he said.

Elaborating further, Revanth Reddy said a new metro line connecting Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) to Shamshabad Airport via the Old City was in the pipeline, linking Nagole and Chandrayangutta via LB Nagar and Owaisi Hospital. The extension of Metro Rail from Miyapur to Ramachandrapuram and from Mind Space junction to the Financial District was also under consideration.

Responding to a question, the Chief Minister felt that there would not be enough commuter traffic from Gachibowli to the Airport, suggesting that it might not be a financially viable route. “The new Metro rail plans proposed by us will be more cost-effective than those proposed by the previous government,” he said.

Similarly, he said the Pharma City would be developed in clusters between the Outer Ring Road and the Regional Ring Road in a phased manner, adhering to a strict zero-pollution policy. Residential colonies would be developed for the workforce, complete with amenities and social infrastructure, to ensure that they need not travel to Hyderabad for day-to-day requirements.

The Chief Minister also revealed plans to establish exclusive universities dedicated to skill development for the youth. Renowned industrialists and experts from around the world would be engaged to teach in these institutions, providing students with degrees equivalent to traditional degrees, while equipping them with additional skills.

Revanth Reddy said special orientation programmes would be conducted for students seeking higher education abroad. The State government would also train the youth in fields of their choice and supply skilled manpower for different countries, thereby generating employment opportunities for the youth.

• To address journalists’ issues within 100 days after appointing chairperson of Telangana Media Academy
• To appoint efficient officers as HoDs with autonomy to choose their teams

Speaking at the New Year celebrations organised by BRSV State leader Jakkula Nagaraju here on Monday, Vinod Kumar said the irrigation projects, which were left incomplete by the previous Congress government in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, were completed by the BRS government with Godavari river water being supplied to parched lands.

Before 2014, power generation units with a capacity of 7,000 MW were available in the State. This had increased to 25,000 MW after the formation of a separate State. Besides IT, the industry sector was also developed in a big way.

Stating that BRS chief and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had taken the State to the top position in development during the last ten years, Vinod Kumar hoped the new Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy would take the State forward on all fronts.
