Stalemate over NSP continues, maintenance works come to standstill

Hyderabad: The much needed regular maintenance works on the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam have come to a standstill with the stalemate continuing over operational control of the project. Andhra Pradesh had forcibly taken over control of 13 of the dam crest gates on its end and it was in no mood to relent.

The maintenance works taken up by Telangana on the joint project were halfway through in respect of certain components. The dam site, which has been handed over to the CRPF for protection and surveillance in the first week of December, is not accessible to the Operations and Maintenance wing of Telangana.

“The operations and maintenance works grounded on the dam are in a standstill. The material collected for changing the track 125T/25T Gantry cranes are spread over the entire dam right from Gate no 1 to Gate No 26. Works on automation the gates were also help up because of the standoff,” officials said.

The only maintenance work undertaken up in the recent months was the replacement of rubber seals for the sluice gates of the hydel units on the AP side. Telangana had replaced nine gates on the AP side as it was tasked with the operational control of the entire project. It had spent over Rs.70 crore on dam maintenance.

AP officials had taken over even the flood control room located on the right side of the dam between gate no 14 to Gate No 26. AP had claimed that the location falls under its jurisdiction. Telangana officials were forced to leave the flood control room. The KRMB should have intervened taking the issue seriously, but it did not, officials said.

The State Dam Safety Organisation (SDSO) and the operations and maintenance wing had repeatedly been writing to the National Dam Safety organisation and the Krishna River Management Board on the issue. The O&M wing sought to know for itself who would take up the maintenance works.

Officials said they were yet to get complete clarity on the issue. It was not known whether the KRMB would task itself with the operations and maintenance as in the case of the Tungabhadra River Management Board. The KRMB has to overcome its constraints in respect of budget and manpower to shoulder such tasks, said officials.

In a letter addressed to the KRMB chairman, TS Engineer-in-Chief (General) C Muralidhar Rao sought restoration of status quo position as on pre-November 28 position immediately.

As directed by the Ministry of Home in the aftermath of the November 29 face off between the police forces of both Telangana and AP states, the KRMB was expected to help restore status quo on the dam site. All the issues pertaining to operations and maintenance of the dam should be resolved at a high level meeting to be held shortly with the Chief Secretaries of both States, officials said.

Passengers escape from the inflatable ramp of a burning Japan Airlines (JAL) Airbus A350

New Delhi:

Visuals have emerged showing how over 350 passengers of a Japan Airlines aircraft escaped from the plane after it caught fire on the runway in Tokyo-Haneda airport.

The JAL aircraft, an Airbus A350, had collided with a turboprop aircraft of Japan’s Coast Guard while it was de-accelerating after landing.

Global aviation safety website JACDED posted a video of passengers sliding down the inflatable ramp above one of the wings. One of the engines was still running while the passengers slid down the slide.

All 367 passengers and 12 crew onboard the Airbus plane were evacuated, broadcaster NHK reported. Those onboard included eight children, Kyodo News reported.

There were six people in the coast guard plane. One of them was rescued, while the rest five were killed.

Jiji news agency reported the coast guard plane was scheduled to leave to help with rescue efforts following a massive earthquake in central Japan on Monday. Reports said the plane had just arrived from Sapporo airport on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

Footage apparently shot by a passenger inside the Airbus aircraft showed flames coming from underneath it before the cabin fills with smoke.

More than 70 fire engines were being deployed, NHK reported.

Japan has not suffered a serious commercial aviation accident in decades. Its worst ever was in 1985, when a JAL jumbo jet flying from Tokyo to Osaka crashed in central Gunma region, killing 520 passengers and crew.

That disaster was one of the world’s deadliest plane crashes involving a single flight.

The Privileges Committee of Lok Sabha will meet next week to examine the issue of suspension of three Congress members from the House during the Winter Session for unruly behaviour.

The Committee, chaired by BJP member Sunil Kumar Singh, at its meeting on January 12 will record oral evidence of Congress members K Jayakumar, Abdul Khaleque and Vijayakumar Vijay Vasanth, who were suspended for creating “grave disorder in the House” on December 18.

During the Winter Session of Parliament, 100 Lok Sabha members from the opposition ranks were suspended from the Lower House for unruly behaviour after they brought placards and raised slogans demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue of breach of Parliament security.

While 97 members were suspended for the remainder of the Winter Session, the suspensions of Mr Jayakumar, Mr Khaleque and Mr Vijayakumar, who had reached the presiding officer’s chair, were referred to the Privileges Committee.

The suspension of the three members will continue till the committee submits its report to the Lok Sabha Speaker.

In the Rajya Sabha, 46 members were suspended during the Winter Session including 11 members whose case was referred to the Privileges Committee of the Upper House.

The Privileges Committee of Rajya Sabha is chaired by Deputy Chairman Harivansh and is yet to convene a meeting to examine the case of suspension of 11 members referred to it.

Israel launches fresh attacks on targets in Syria

Syria’s official SANA news agency, citing an unnamed military source, reported that the Israeli enemy launched an aerial attack from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights at around 4:35 a.m. local time (0135 GMT) on Tuesday, targeting some sites on the outskirts of the capital Damascus.

The source added that there were no injuries in the strike, but there were material losses.

Another military official said that Syrian air defenses intercepted and shot down most of the incoming Israeli missiles.

The development came only a few hours after Israeli artillery units shelled areas in Syria’s southwestern province of Dara’a.

The Zionist forces stated in a statement that the attack was in response to several rockets fired from southern Syria into the Golan Heights.

Israel waged the bloody war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas Resistance movement launched Operation al-Aqsa Storm in the occupied territories in retaliation for the Tel Aviv regime’s incessant crimes against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

Since the start of the aggression, the Tel Aviv regime has killed 21,978 Palestinians, most of them women and children, and injured some 57,700 others.

It has also imposed a “complete siege” on the coastal sliver, cutting off fuel, electricity, food and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

Israel frequently targets military positions inside Syria, especially those of Resistance combatants, who have played a key role in helping the Syrian army in its fight against foreign-backed terrorists.

Is India's Most Wanted Masood Azhar Dead? A Fact-Check

Is India's Most Wanted Terrorist Masood Azhar Dead? A Fact-Check

Masood Azhar has been wanted in India for years.

New Delhi:

Masood Azhar, another Pakistani terrorist most wanted in India, has been killed in a bomb blast – or so say several posts now going viral on social media. The unconfirmed photos and video at the heart of these posts come on the heels of similar posts that claimed that gangster Dawood Ibrahim — most wanted in India for decades — died of poisoning. The claims turned out to be fake. Equally fake were the screenshots of Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar “confirming” the “news”.

In case of Masood Azhar — wanted in connection with multiple terror attacks including the 2001 Parliament attack — the claims were made by Twitter handles from Pakistan.

The handles claimed that the Jaish-e-Mohammed chief was killed in a bomb blast in Bahawalpur while returning from a mosque at 5 am. The blast was allegedly carried out by unknown people over personal rivalry.

No mainstream media in Pakistan has reported it.

One of the first to post the photo of the burning car is a handle called Times Algebra. Muzaffarabad news bulletin also used the photo.

But a bit of digging uncovered more.

On 3 November, a Twitter handle named OSINT posted that a police van was targeted in an attack in Dera Ismail Khan, killing 6 people and injuring 25.

But they too, appear to have recycled the photo, which was posted first in 2019 by a handle called Hasnat Ali. The caption said three TikTokers were killed in the explosion.

Masood Azhar has been wanted in India for years. Besides the 2001 attack on Parliament, he also targeted the Ram Janambhoomi temple in Ayodhya in July 2005, and the attack on CRPF personnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama in February 2019.

He also orchestrated an assault on the Indian Consulate in Afghanistan’s Mazar-e-Sharif in January 2016.

Explained: Why truck drivers’ strike is spelling disaster for fuel supply and traffic flow

Hyderabad: The start of the New Year has been disastrous for most people. Fuel shortages and congested roads are how people in the country are ringing in 2024. Social media platforms are filled with photos and videos of people waiting in long queues at petrol pumps. #TruckDriversProtest has thousands of tweets on X.

Are you curious as to what precisely is resulting in a petrol shortage at fuel stations and utter chaos on the roads? The truck drivers’ protest against the new hit-and-run law.

About 2,000 petrol pumps, mostly in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Punjab and some in Hyderabad, have run out of fuel stocks as the strike by some truckers’ associations entered the second day on Tuesday.

What is the truck drivers’ strike?
Some truck, bus and tanker operators began a three-day strike on Monday against the stringent jail and fine regulations under the new criminal law Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for hit-and-run cases.

The new law, which replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, provides for a jail of up to 10 years and/or a fine of Rs 7 lakh for serious road accidents due to negligent driving and where drivers run away without informing the police.

Truckers said most truck drivers choose to run away even in minor accidents as they otherwise will have to face mob justice and risk of life. While the mobs typically go unpunished, to impose stringent punishment on drivers was unfair, they said.

There are about 1 lakh trucks that ferry petrol and diesel from oil company depots to petrol pumps.

What else will be affected?
Essential supplies of vegetables, fruits and milk too may get affected if the three-day strike is extended or a pan-India movement is launched. LPG truck movement too has been impacted. However, there are no complaints on LPG shortage just yet.

What next?
The All India Motor Transport Association — the umbrella body of truck operators — has so far not given a nationwide strike call and its representatives will be meeting home ministry officials to raise their concerns around BNS.
