'Cinema, Cuisine, Tourism': In Kuwait, PM Modi Reflects On India's 'Soft Power'

Kuwait City:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored India’s historical and cultural ties with the Gulf region, and the significant contributions of the Indian diaspora in the Gulf nation. Highlighting India’s soft power, he emphasised its civilisational ethos, cultural influence through cinema and cuisine, and its tourism sector.

In an interview with Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Saturday, PM Modi also reaffirmed India’s role in addressing global challenges such as climate change, food and energy security and advocating for the Global South.

PM Modi was on a two-day visit to the Gulf nation of Kuwait at the invitation of Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Emir of the State of Kuwait. This was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Kuwait in 43 years.

Responding to a question about how India’s soft power can influence its global outreach, PM Modi said India’s civilisational ethos and heritage form the foundation of its soft power, KUNA reported. PM Modi further asserted that India’s soft power has grown significantly alongside its expanding global presence, particularly over the last decade.

“In Kuwait and the Gulf, Indian movies stand out as a prime example of this cultural connection. We have seen that people in Kuwait have a special liking for Indian cinema. I am told that there are three weekly shows on Kuwait Television on Indian movies and actors,” he said.

“Similarly, we share several attributes in our cuisine and culinary traditions. Centuries of people-to-people contact have also resulted in linguistic similarities and shared vocabulary. India’s diversity and emphasis on peace, tolerance and coexistence resonate with the values of Kuwait’s multicultural society. Recently, a Kuwaiti scholar translated Ramayana and Mahabharata in Arabic,” PM Modi added.

Speaking about the tourism sector, PM Modi said, “India’s tourism sector offers another dimension of soft power. With 43 UNESCO World Heritage sites, coupled with ongoing efforts to enhance visitor facilities, India provides a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.”

“For a society like Kuwait, with which India shares a rich historical connection, India’s tourism opportunities are an invitation to explore and deepen the shared cultural ties,” he added.

He added that Indians in Kuwait have contributed immensely to the development of the country as doctors, businessmen, construction workers, engineers, nurses and other professionals.

“As we elevate the level of our relationship with Kuwait to a strategic partnership, I believe the role of the Indian community will only grow in importance. I am confident that Kuwaiti authorities recognise the immense contributions of this vibrant community and will continue to provide encouragement and support,” PM Modi added.

Asked about Kuwaiti-Indian energy relations, PM Modi said that energy is an important pillar of the bilateral partnership, estimating that last year, trade exchange crossed USD 10 billion, which reflects the deep trust and mutual benefit underpinning this partnership, KUNA reported.

“Both nations have consistently ranked among the top 10 trading partners in the energy sector. Indian companies actively engage in importing crude oil, LPG, and petroleum products from Kuwait while also exporting petroleum products to Kuwait. Currently, Kuwait stands as India’s 6th largest crude supplier and 4th largest LPG supplier,” PM Modi said.

He added, “In addition to conventional hydrocarbon trade, there exist a plethora of new areas for cooperation, including an entire value chain of oil and gas, as well as joint efforts in low-carbon solutions such as green hydrogen, biofuels, and carbon capture technologies.”

On being asked about India’s global role as a voice of the Global South, PM Modi stated, “India is privileged to speak for the Global South. We share much in common with our fellow developing countries – from history to the aspirations of our people. We therefore not only understand but feel their concerns. The ongoing conflicts and the resultant challenges of food, fuel and fertiliser have hit the global south hard. They are also disproportionately bearing the brunt of climate change

He hailed his country as a reliable development partner for the global south, a first responder in times of crises for them and for others, a leader on climate action and a champion of inclusive growth and development.”

He added, “We gave voice to the concerns of developing countries when we assumed the Presidency of the G20. We hosted three Voice of the Global South Summits to amplify and act on the pressing needs of people. We were honoured that the African Union became a permanent member of the G20 at the New Delhi Summit. This was a historic achievement for the Global South, and a proud moment for us.”

Regarding regional and global conflicts, involving Gaza and Ukraine, PM Modi emphasised that solutions cannot be found on the battlefield, stressing the importance of sincere and practical engagement between stakeholders for bridging differences and achieving negotiated settlements, KUNA reported.

He highlighted that India recently provided 70 tons of humanitarian aid and nearly 65 tons of medicines to Gaza, along with contributing USD 10 million to UNRWA over the past two years.

PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to a negotiated two-state solution aimed at establishing a sovereign, independent, and viable Palestinian state with secure and recognised borders.

On environmental sustainability initiatives, PM Modi said, “We are facing several challenges, but none more pressing than climate change. Our planet is under stress. We need urgent collective action and one that involves the entire global community. No one can do it alone. We must come together. India wants to lead and bring all countries together to foster pro-planet action. This is the idea behind our championing various green global initiatives.”

He also regarded the India-led green initiatives as platforms for all nations to collectively address climate change, promote environmental sustainability, build disaster-resilient infrastructure, and drive the global transition towards clean energy, KUNA reported.

PM Modi also attended the opening ceremony of the 26th Arabian Gulf Cup in Kuwait on Saturday as the ‘Guest of Honour’ of Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Emir of Kuwait and Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, Crown Prince of Kuwait received PM Modi at Bayan Palace on Sunday and was accorded a ceremonial welcome.

PM Modi expressed his deep appreciation to Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for conferring on him the highest award of the State of Kuwait ‘The Order of Mubarak Al Kabeer.’ The leaders exchanged views on bilateral, global, regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest.

The two sides also recalled the centuries-old historical ties rooted in shared history and cultural affinities. They noted with satisfaction the regular interactions at various levels which have helped in generating and sustaining the momentum in the multifaceted bilateral cooperation. Both sides emphasised sustaining the recent momentum in high-level exchanges through regular bilateral exchanges at Ministerial and senior-official levels.

197 reporters martyred in Israeli attack on Gaza since Oct. 7

The Palestinian Journalists’ Protection Center (PJPC) announced the martyrdom of Palestinian journalist Hazem Abu ArQoub and his wife in Israeli airstrike on Khan Yunis in southern Gaza Strip and emphasized that the number of journalists martyred in less than a month at this enclaved region to 6.

The media office condemned the killing and urged the international community to intervene, describing the attacks on journalists as systematic.

It also urged international organizations and governments to “hold Israel accountable by taking legal action in international courts and to put pressure on Israel to halt the ongoing genocide in Gaza.”

Israel has launched a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack by the Palestinian group Hamas in October last year, killing more than 44,000 people, most of them women and children, and injuring over 104,000.

The second year of genocide in Gaza has drawn growing international condemnation, with officials and institutions labeling the attacks and blocking of aid deliveries as a deliberate attempt to destroy a population.

The number of Palestinian journalists martyred in Gaza Strip since the outbreak of war in the enclaved Gaza Strip has increased to 197.

BCCI SGM to be held on January 12 for electing new secretary and treasurer: Sources

BCCI

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be holding a Special General Meeting (SGM) in its Mumbai headquarters at 12 noon on January 12, 2025 for electing new Secretary and Treasurer.

Sources have confirmed to IANS that the notice for the elections was sent out to state associations on Saturday afternoon by Devajit Saikia, who issued it as the BCCI Joint Secretary.

Incidentally, Saikia is serving as acting Secretary, after BCCI president Roger Binny exercised his special powers granted in the constitution. Article 7.2 (d) in the BCCI constitution goes as, “The President shall, in the event of a vacancy, or indisposition of an office-bearer, delegate the functions to another Office-Bearer, delegate the functions to another Office-Bearer, until the vacancy is duly filled up, or the indisposition ceases.”

The elections for twin vacancies have come up in the BCCI after Jay Shah left the Secretary post to take charge as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) earlier this month.

Later, Treasurer Ashish Shelar stepped down from his role in the BCCI following him being included as cabinet minister in the Maharashtra state government. The BCCI constitution states that ministers are barred from holding a position as an office bearer in the cricket board, which led to Shelar giving up his Treasurer role.

The constitution also says if there is a vacancy in the Apex Council, it has to be filled up via elections “at a Special General Body Meeting of the BCCI convened by the secretary for that purpose within 45 days.”

As of now, there has been no definitive word over who could be the successors to posts left by Shah and Shelar. But with the election notice given out, it means there is ample time to decide who emerge as suitable candidates for the two vacant office-bearers posts in the BCCI.

From reel to real: Cops nab wanted gangster during ‘Pushpa 2’ show

Nagpur: Moviegoers watching a late-night show of ‘Pushpa 2‘ at a multiplex in Maharashtra’s Nagpur witnessed a real-life action scene as police stormed the cinema hall and arrested a man wanted in murder and drug cases.

The dramatic arrest of Vishal Meshram shortly after midnight on Thursday left the packed audience stunned, but police assured them that they could continue enjoying the movie as they nabbed the accused and took him away.

Meshram was on the run for 10 months and was eventually tracked down after police learnt about his interest in the recently-released film, an official from Pachpaoli police station said on Sunday.

The gangster had 27 cases against him, including two of murder and drug trafficking, and was known for his violent tendencies, even attacking police in the past, he said.

Authorities had been pursuing him relentlessly, using cyber surveillance and tracking his movements in a new sports utility vehicle (SUV), the official said.

After tracking him on Thursday, police deflated the vehicle’s tyres outside the cinema hall, located in central part of the city, to prevent his escape, he said. When police personnel entered the hall during the movie’s climax, Meshram was engrossed in the film.

The police surrounded him and made the arrest swiftly, giving him no chance to resist, the official said. Meshram is currently lodged in the Nagpur Central Jail and will soon be transferred to a prison in Nashik, the police said.

Iran envoy condoles loss of security forces in Pakistan

In a post on his X account on Sunday, Reza Amiri-Moghaddam reacted to the martyrdom of 16 Pakistani security forces and wrote, “I was saddened to hear the news of the martyrdom of 16 Pakistani security forces in a terrorist attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.”

“I offer my heartfelt condolences to the government, army, and noble people of Pakistan, especially the families who lost their loved ones. I pray to God Almighty to grant the martyrs the highest ranks and to grant patience and forbearance to the bereaved families,” he added.

Pakistani Taliban claimed a brazen overnight raid on an army outpost near the border with Afghanistan on Saturday, which intelligence officials said killed 16 soldiers and critically wounded five more.

The siege started after midnight and lasted about two hours as around 30 terrorists pummeled the mountainous outpost from three sides, one senior intelligence official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Editorial: A new feminist hero

Gisele Pelicot’s willingness to face her abuser in the courtroom and waive her right to anonymity was unprecedented in such trials

Editorial: A new feminist hero

Gisele Pelicot’s willingness to face her abuser in the courtroom and waive her right to anonymity was unprecedented in such trials

Gisele Pelicot, the 72-year-old French grandmother, is an unlikely feminist hero of our times. Suffering gruesome sexual violence for years, she has become the voice of the victims in a way that challenges the conventions. By refusing the anonymity allowed to her as a rape survivor under French law, she has come out in the open talking about her ordeal and challenging the narrative on how we talk about rape. “It is not for us to have shame — it is for them,” was how she famously told the court. In a world where rape victims suffer silently while the excruciatingly slow justice system often lets the perpetrators off the hook, her bold stance is more relevant than ever to bring a radical change in the societal approach. In one of the most disturbing rape cases in recent history, Gisele’s then-husband Dominique Pelicot had been drugging her for nearly a decade — from 2011 to 2020 — until she was practically comatose, then inviting men he had recruited online to come to his house and rape her while he filmed them. Of the 72 men in the videos, the police have identified 51 and put them on trial. Pelicot has been sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment for the crime. By refusing to be anonymous, Gisele has taken control of the narrative of her life and is reminding the world that the shame of rape does not fall on her but on the men who raped her.

The case also came as a grim reminder that for some women the most unsafe place is inside their own homes. In India, as in the rest of the world, a majority of the perpetrators of sexual violence are known to the victims. Most cases go unreported. What makes the Gisele Pelicot case particularly alarming is not just the horror of the crimes, but the larger question of how such atrocities could go unnoticed for so long. At the heart of the case is Gisèle who, in a brave yet tragic decision, chose to make her ordeal public. Her willingness to face her abuser in the courtroom and waive her right to anonymity was unprecedented in such trials. In doing so, the septuagenarian victim has forced the world to confront the grotesque reality of sexual violence. The trial has sparked widespread outrage and debate over the gaps in legal and societal frameworks regarding sexual assault. France, like many countries, defines rape as an act of sexual penetration committed through violence or coercion. However, this narrow definition of rape, which does not explicitly include the absence of consent, has proven to be a significant flaw in prosecuting sexual violence cases. This case also underlines the inadequacy of a system that allows perpetrators to escape full accountability by using manipulation and deception to justify their actions.

BRS leaders slam Revanth Reddy for misleading public during assembly session

BRS leaders slam Revanth Reddy for misleading public during assembly session

Hyderabad: Coming down heavily on the Congress government in the State, BRS leaders Ponnala Lakshmaiah and Dasoju Sravan said Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy had misled the house on multiple counts during the just concluded assembly session. They accused them of spreading falsehoods and undermining the democratic values of the state.

Addressing a news conference at Telangana Bhavan, Lakshmaiah accused Revanth Reddy of feudalistic behaviour and misleading the public on various issues, including the Lagacherla incident.

He criticized the Chief Minister for making false statements on State debts and failing to respect the democratic process. Lakshmaiah highlighted the Congress government’s failure to address the concerns of farmers and the general public.

He urged them to honour the democratic values and stop misleading the people. He also pointed out the inconsistency in Revanth Reddy’s stance on discussing court cases in the assembly, questioning why some cases were discussed while others were not.

Dasoju Sravan emphasized that the assembly is a sacred temple of democracy where justice, righteousness, and constitutional commitment should prevail.

He accused Revanth Reddy of murdering democracy and the constitution by diverting discussions in the assembly to irrelevant issues, avoiding critical topics like Rythu Bharosa besides other key issues including loan waivers, unemployment, and the plight of BCs, SCs, and STs.

He criticized the Congress government for not addressing the issues of farmers, who are still struggling without the promised Rythu Bharosa and loan waivers.

He also pointed out the lack of discussion on the exploitation by figures like Gautam Adani and the challenges faced by students in Gurukuls.

Sravan questioned Revanth Reddy’s intentions, accusing him of targeting the film industry and actor Allu Arjun without any substantial reason.

He condemned the CM for not providing ex-gratia to the family of Revathi, who died under tragic circumstances, and for making baseless allegations against BRS working president KT Rama Rao.

'Next to impossible' to rescue patients from Gaza's Kamal Adwan Hospital: Director

The director of Kamal Adwan Hospital says it’s “next to impossible” to rescue civilians and patients since Israel ordered the closure and evacuation on Sunday of the hospital.

Kamal Adwan, one of the last hospitals still barely functioning in a besieged area on the northern edge of the Gaza Strip, is currently home to nearly 400 civilians, “including babies in the neonatal unit, whose lives depend on oxygen and incubators,”  according to the head of the hospital  Doctor Hussam Abu Safiya.

“We cannot evacuate these patients safely without assistance, equipment, and time,” he told Reuters via text message.

“We are sending this message under heavy bombardment and direct targeting of the fuel tanks, which if hit will cause a large explosion and mass casualties of the civilians inside.”

Abu Safiya said Israel’s military had ordered patients and staff to be evacuated to another hospital where conditions are even worse.

Meanwhile, reports said electricity was completely cut off at the hospital after the facility came under a drone attack on Sunday. The attack hit the facility’s power generators and fuel tanks.

The power outage has also cut off communication between medical staff at the facility, deteriorating the already “dire” situation, according to health officials.

Safiya said in a video statement on Saturday night, “The nursery, maternity, and all departments of the hospital are being targeted by the occupation forces with all types of weapons, including sniper fire, tank shells, and quadcopters.”

“For more than an hour now, shells are raining down on us from every corner, mile, and direction.”

Safiya made an urgent appeal to the international community to protect the hospital and its remaining patients as well as medical staff.

“For more than an hour now, shells are raining down on us from every corner, mile, and direction.”

The regime’s forces have attacked Kamal Adwan Hospital more than 20 times in the past two weeks, according to the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, which said “several patients, medical personnel, and their companions” have been injured.

They said the military is “routinely” targeting medical teams in the north of Gaza “to destroy the health system and impose intolerable living conditions on civilians while denying them access to life-saving care.”

Observers say what the Israeli regime is currently doing before the eyes of the world on the northern edge of the coastal strip is land grabs under the threat of extermination.
