Delhi-NCR continues to breathe in ‘very poor’ quality air

Delhi

New Delhi: The air quality in Delhi-NCR continues to deteriorate, posing severe health risks for the people living in the region. On Saturday, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the national Capital was recorded at 318, categorising it as ‘very poor,’ according to official data, while the air quality in Noida and Gurugram also continued to fall in the ‘very poor’ to ‘severe’ category.

This marks the sixth consecutive day that Delhi-NCR’s air quality has remained in the ‘very poor’ category, creating significant challenges for public health and daily life.

In Anand Vihar, one of the national Capital’s most polluted areas, the AQI reached an alarming level of 505 around 8 A.M., placing it in the hazardous category.

This is a stark indicator of the deteriorating environmental conditions. The toxic air is not confined to Delhi alone, as neighboring cities are also grappling with dangerous pollution levels.

Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday morning, Noida recorded an AQI of 267, Greater Noida 286, and Ghaziabad 250, while Haryana’s Gurugram saw an AQI of 284, with most areas falling in the ‘very poor’ to ‘severe’ categories.

The widespread pollution is making life increasingly difficult for residents across the region. However, Noida’s Sector 125 recorded an AQI of 184, which falls in the ‘moderate’ to ‘poor’ range, offering a slightly better scenario compared to Delhi-NCR.

Adding to the worsening air quality, the temperature in Delhi has dropped significantly, intensifying the impact of pollution. On Friday morning, the temperature was recorded at 9.5 degrees Celsius, one degree below the season’s normal, marking it the coldest day so far this winter.

To tackle the alarming pollution levels, the Supreme Court has directed that all Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP)-4 measures, except those related to schools, will remain in effect until the next hearing on December 2.

The court emphasised the need for strict enforcement and noted lapses in the implementation of GRAP-4 guidelines. It warned of action against officials responsible for such failures. While allowing physical classes to continue, the court declined to ease restrictions under GRAP-3 or GRAP-2 until there was a consistent decrease in the AQI levels.

It also instructed state governments to utilise the labour cess collected to support construction workers impacted by the ongoing construction ban.

Authorities have implemented several restrictions under GRAP-4, including a ban on the entry of non-essential trucks into Delhi, except those carrying essential goods or running on cleaner fuels such as LNG, CNG, BS-VI diesel, or electricity.

Construction activities for public infrastructure projects have also been suspended to curb dust pollution, a major contributor to the current crisis.

Shubman Gill recovers from thumb injury, returns to nets

While Rohit is expected to open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rahul could come in at three pushing Gill to number 5

Shubman Gill recovers from thumb injury, returns to nets

The top-order batter was seen facing Yash Dayal and Akash Deep in the nets ahead of the pink-ball warm-up game against Australian PM’s XI starting Saturday.

Canberra: Shubman Gill returned to the India nets on Friday, showing enough signs of a full recovery from a thumb injury that ruled him out of the series opener against Australia in Perth.

Gill’s absence was not felt in Perth as India won the game by 295 runs but considering his impressive run on the previous tour, the visitors need him at his best over the course of the five-match series.

The top-order batter was seen facing Yash Dayal and Akash Deep in the nets ahead of the pink-ball warm-up game against Australian PM’s XI starting Saturday. In Gill’s absence, Devdutt Padikkal came at number three for India but could not deliver.

However, it is not a given that Gill will return to his usual batting position as KL Rahul excelled as an opener in Perth in skipper Rohit Sharma‘s absence. While Rohit is expected to open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rahul could come in at three pushing Gill to number 5.

It remains to be seen if India experiment in the batting order in the warm-up game as all batters would be allowed a hit in the middle considering it is not a first-class game.

Beware Netflix Users, This Scam Can Steal Your Credit Card Details

Cybersecurity experts have alerted Netflix users against an SMS phishing campaign being used to steal account and credit card information. Hackers are sending this phishing text, claiming the concerned person has not paid for their subscription and that their account will be suspended soon, the New York Post reported.

“These SMS scare campaigns targeting Netflix customers have become ubiquitous and never stop, but they vary in size and scope,” said security firm Bitdefender.

“NETFLIX: There was an issue processing your payment. To keep your services active, please sign in and confirm your details at…” reads one such alert. There is a link that directs viewers to a website that looks identical to the Netflix platform and asks for their credit card number and login credentials.

These stolen credentials are sold to underground rings on the dark web.

Netflix’s lack of two-factor authentication protections has made the scam easier to spread in as many as 23 countries, including the US. The streaming platform is vulnerable to spear phishing as it only relies on usernames and passwords for security.

Netflix, in a statement about the text messages scam, said, “We will never ask you to enter your personal information in a text or email. We will never request payment through a 3rd party vendor or website. If the text or email links to a URL that you don’t recognize, don’t tap or click it.”

If you have already clicked any of these links, the streaming giant suggests changing your Netflix password to a new one that is strong and unique. It also suggests updating your password on any other websites or apps where you used the same email and password combination.

Bitdefender, a cybersecurity firm, advises users to avoid opening suspicious links and manually enter websites rather than clicking links without verifying in order to prevent falling for scams.

Sibolangit: Two more bodies were recovered from a tourist bus hit by a landslide triggered by torrential rains on Indonesia‘s Sumatra island, bringing the death toll to nine, officials said.

At least 20 people have died in other landslides and floods in the region this week.

Rescuers recovered the bodies from the bus, which was covered by trees, mud and rocks from the landslide on the road from Medan city to Berastagi in North Sumatra province, officials said late Thursday.

The road is the main route from the capital, Medan, to other districts in the region.

The bus was among vehicles that had been cut off by previous landslides along the road since Wednesday morning.

More than 10 people were also injured and were taken to a hospital in Medan city.

Muji Ediyanto of the North Sumatra Regional Police said in a video message distributed by Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency on Thursday that some vehicles and their passengers remained trapped between landslides along the road.

“It will take at least two days to evacuate them from the landslides. Several vehicles are still trapped by debris from the landslides. There also are fallen trees at several points and the vehicles have not been able to get out of those locations,” Ediyanto said.

Earlier this week, 20 people died from flash floods and landslides at four locations in the mountains of North Sumatra province, including in Karo regency, which is less than 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the most-recent landslides.

Seasonal rains from around October through to March frequently cause flooding and landslides in Indonesia, an archipelago of 17,000 islands where millions of people live in mountainous areas or near fertile flood plains.

Tim David excited for his RCB homecoming, says ‘hoping to have exciting memories there’

New Delhi: Australian all-rounder Tim David shared his enthusiasm about rejoining Royal Challengers Bengaluru and expressed hope for creating thrilling memories with the team.

Singapore-born, Australia-raised David was signed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru for Rs 3 crore at the IPL 2025 auction in Jeddah.

Interestingly, he began his IPL career with RCB back in 2021, before joining the Mumbai Indians the following year. “I’m really excited to be playing for RCB this year in this coming cycle. I’ve linked up with some of the friends, worked with some of the coaching staff before, and obviously it’s a great ground there, especially for power hitters, so I’m hoping to have some exciting memories there too,” David told IANS.

The 28-year-old big hitter, who has dedicated his career to the 20-over format, played for MI Emirates, MI New York, MI Cape Town, Hobart Hurricanes, Lahore Qalandars, Perth Scorchers, Southern Braves, St. Lucia Kings, and others in the franchise tournaments across the world.

Sharing his experience of playing franchise competitions across the world, he said, “Well a lot of the guys now are playing in a lot of franchise tournaments, but I suppose I’ve played in a lot of them, and probably the most important thing is how you work with your teammates. Sometimes when you’re playing with a new team, you might have new teammates, a new coaching staff, a different franchise, and then obviously the country where you’re playing the games affects the conditions. So to be able to try and work out a successful method of scoring runs in a new country, that’s in those conditions.”

In the international T20 franchise leagues, the Australian batter is one of the most sought-after players. From 254 games in the shortest format, he has amassed 4872 runs at a strike rate of 159.79.

In the IPL, David has 659 runs at a strike rate just over 170. David, who is currently playing for the Delhi Bulls in the Abu Dhabi T10, gave his take on the finisher role in the T10 format and said, “In T10, look, you’re just trying to get as many runs as quickly as you can. So yeah, you have the finish of the game comes about quicker; it’s only half the overs, so I suppose it’s good to practice your method of playing along the format.”

The allrounder, who made his debut for Australia against India in Mohali, smashed 54 off 27 in Hyderabad in just his third match. Revealing his future plans, David said, “I’m going to go back home and play the Big Bash at home for Hobart. So, yeah, it’s really great to get some games in; get some rhythm batting out in the middle in the lead-up to the Big Bash.”

“I’m just looking at what’s next, you know, straight ahead of me. So I’ve got a game tonight, and we’re trying to get through the finals here in the T10 and see what happens after that,” he concluded.

Hyderabad: Silver prices in Hyderabad fell to a one-month low on Wednesday, trading at Rs 97,900 per kilogram.

This marks a marginal drop of Rs 100 from the previous day’s rate of Rs 98,000 per kilogram and shows a significant downward trend from earlier this month, when the rates hovered above Rs 1,00,000 per kilogram.

Data from the last 10 days reveals that silver prices remained steady at Rs 1,01,000 per kilogram from November 20-24, before witnessing a sharp decline of Rs 500 on November 25 and a more substantial Rs 2,500 drop on November 26.

Wednesday’s decline brings the total drop in silver prices to Rs 3,100 in the past three days.

A one-month performance analysis shows that silver traded at Rs 1,05,000 per kilogram at the beginning of November. However, a steady decline was observed mid-month, as prices dipped to Rs 99,000 by November 18 before temporarily rebounding to Rs 1,01,000.

The current level of Rs 97,900 is the lowest recorded since late October.

According to market experts, the recent slump is driven by global factors, including declining industrial demand and fluctuations in the international commodities market.

Akhilesh Yadav's Jibe As Samajwadi Team Stopped From Visiting Sambhal

Akhilesh Yadav's Jibe As Samajwadi Team Stopped From Visiting Sambhal

Akhilesh Yadav demanded the suspension of the administrative machinery in Sambhal.

Sambhal:

A 15-member delegation from the Samajwadi Party (SP) was barred from entering Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal today, prompting a sharp response from party chief Akhilesh Yadav. The team, tasked with investigating recent violence at the Shahi Jama Masjid, was formed under the leadership of UP state assembly LoP Mata Prasad Pandey.

The Sambhal district administration issued a directive banning the entry of outsiders until December 10. District Magistrate Rajendra Pensiya stated, “No outsider, any social organisation or any public representative can enter into the borders of the district without seeking the permission of the competent authority till December 10.”

This measure came against the backdrop of violent clashes in Sambhal on November 24, following a court-mandated survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid. Protesters opposing the survey clashed with security forces, leading to stone pelting, arson, and the deaths of several individuals.

Reacting strongly to the situation, Akhilesh Yadav took to social media to condemn the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government. Mr Yadav accused the government of administrative failure and alleged that the BJP was attempting to shield its negligence.

“Imposing a ban is a failure of the BJP government’s governance, administration and government management. If the government had imposed such a ban earlier on those who dreamed of causing riots and made people raise frenzied slogans, the atmosphere of harmony and peace in Sambhal would not have been spoiled,” Mr Yadav wrote.

He also demanded the suspension of the entire administrative machinery in Sambhal for “negligence and conspiracy.”

Mata Prasad Pandey claimed that both the Home Secretary Sanjay Prasad and Sambhal District Magistrate contacted him, requesting that he postpone the trip.

“They (administration) should have given me a notice as per the rules that I cannot go there, but no written notice was given. They only talk on the telephone. They deployed the police. The Justice Commission is going there, media people are going there, will there be any unrest if we go there? This government is deliberately stopping us to hide all its work,” Mr Pandey said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

The SP delegation initially planned to visit Moradabad before heading to Sambhal, intending to meet victims of the violence and their families. However, these plans were derailed as police refused to allow them to leave Mr Pandey’s residence.

Samajwadi Party state president Shyam Lal Pal echoed Mr Pandey’s claims, stating that the delegation intended to compile a detailed report on the incident for submission to party chief Akhilesh Yadav. The team included high-profile members such as Legislative Council leader Lal Bihari Yadav, MPs Ziaur Rahman Barq, Harendra Malik, and others.

Ziaur Rahman Barq faces charges related to the violence, accused of committing “provocative acts.” Despite this, the Samajwadi leadership maintained that their visit was essential for ensuring transparency and accountability.

Congress state president Ajay Rai has also announced plans for a party delegation to visit the district on December 2.

Amidst the political fallout, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has formed a three-member judicial commission to investigate the violence. Retired Justice Devendra Kumar Arora of the Allahabad High Court will lead the probe.
