Delhi HC refers BharatPe-Ashneer Grover dispute to arbitration

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday referred a dispute between BharatPe, an online money transaction platform, and its former managing director Ashneer Grover to a sole arbitrator.

In its plea filed before the Delhi High Court, the fintech company alleged that Grover disclosed confidential information relating to BharatPe on social media platforms, in violation of the employment agreement.

Before the issue reached Delhi HC, responding to BharatPe’s notice to refer the matter to arbitration, Grover agreed on the formation of an arbitral tribunal but disagreed on the name of sole arbitrator.

In an earlier round of litigation, the Delhi High Court imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on Grover over blatant violation of earlier orders and assurances made by him to not post on social media defamatory posts against BharatPe.

It had asked Ashneer Grover as well as the officials of the fintech company not to speak in a “unparliamentary” or “defamatory” manner against one another.

The Delhi High Court issued an order restraining Grover from making defamatory and derogatory statements against BharatPe, its office bearers, or officials, and asked Grover to remove his posts, including one calling the SBI Chairperson “petty”.

Ashneer and his wife allegedly committed financial irregularities when they were at the helm of the fintech platform.

BharatPe terminated the services of Madhuri Jain, head of controls, after an internal probe found misappropriation of funds that ran into crores during her tenure.

The fintech platform claimed that Grover, his wife, and their relatives were engaged in extensive misappropriation of company funds and grossly abused company money to fund their lavish lifestyles.

Grover had already moved an arbitration plea with the Singapore International Arbitration Centre pleading that the investigation launched against him was illegal because it violated the shareholder agreement and articles of association.

Anti-Zionist movement

The genocide in Gaza has brought millions more to the anti-Zionist position; the prospects for building a radical and effective anti-Zionist movement are better than ever. Zionism cannot be reformed; it must be ended.

A recent British opinion poll reveals that 54% of 16 to 24 year-olds agree with the statement “Israel should not exist.”

De-Zionization needs to focus not just on Palestine, but the UK and everywhere else Zionism rears its head.

There are many things that we can do now.

We must ascertain which groups are most complicit and which can be most easily targeted.

There are four key areas which need attention.

First, direct action needs to be taken. Palestine Action is at the cutting edge of the resistance to the Zionist war machine in the UK.

In the last few years, it has launched scores of actions to occupy, cripple and decommission arms firm factories and offices, as well as targeting companies involved in serving the arms industry and helping commit genocide in Palestine.

In recent months, Palestine Action has taken action to disable arms firms and their suppliers virtually every day, and sometimes on several occasions on a particular day.

Second, we need to build information warfare. The weapons in this war are pro-Palestine independent media outlets like the Grayzone Electronic Intifada, and, of course, Palestine Declassified.

It’s a sign of effectiveness when Zionists devote significant resources to countering our activities, such as when the Center for Countering Digital Hate attempted to criticize Palestine declassified.

Third, we must directly target British charities complicit in genocide. Key Zionist families directly support charities which fund the genocidal occupation forces like Beit Halochem or the UK Friends of the Association for the Wellbeing of Israel’s Soldiers (AWIS)

In these cases, the Wolfson family, which owns Argos, Homebase, and the credit company Experian, and the Lewis family, which owns clothes retailer River Island, are implicated.

There is a branch of Next or River Island in almost every British city.

Four is the issue of British recruits. According to a 2016 report by Israel’s ministry of military affairs, British recruits make up some 5% of foreign recruits, perhaps 1,700 British citizens in total, all of whom must be detained and de-Zionized.

South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor had the right approach when she put South Africans who fight in the IOF on notice.

“We are ready. When you come home, we are going to arrest you.”

Zionism must be dismantled, and we can only do this by building a mass anti-Zionist Movement.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov released on bail, now under investigation

Paris: Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of the encrypted messaging service Telegram, was released after paying a five-million-euro (about $5.6 million) bail, but he is required to report to the police twice a week, Paris Public Prosecutor Laure Beccuau said.

Durov is officially placed under investigation on six charges and he was prohibited from leaving France during the investigation, Beccuau added on Wednesday night as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Durov was arrested by French Police at an airport outside Paris on Saturday night.

Beccuau said on Monday that the Telegram founder is accused of 12 criminal offences, including failing to act against Telegram users involved in cyberbullying, sharing pedophilic content and glorifying terrorism.

He added the arrest “comes in the context of a judicial investigation opened on July 8, 2024”.

It also concerns “refusal to communicate, at the request of competent authorities, information or documents necessary for carrying out and operating interceptions allowed by law,” the Paris prosecutor said.

In response to the arrest, the Telegram group said on its X account that the company “abides by European Union (EU) laws, including the Digital Services Act”.

“It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner is responsible for abuse of that platform,” it added.

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that the arrest of Durov is “in no way a political decision”.

Durov’s arrest in France “took place as part of an ongoing judicial investigation,” Macron said on social media platform X.

After the arrest, Russia’s embassy in Paris has referred a note to the French Foreign Ministry demanding consular access to Durov, the TASS news agency quoted Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova as saying.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk, owner of the US social media platform X, and Edward Snowden, former US National Security Agency contractor, condemned Durov’s arrest on Sunday.

"Zionists killing machine has increased tension in region"

Iran’s Abbas Araghchi and Netherlands Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp held a phone call on Wednesday evening to discuss developments in West Asia, including the Gaza war.

The Dutch foreign minister said that his country is concerned about the ongoing crisis in West Asia, and called on all sides to exercise restraint in order to prevent the further escalation of tensions.

“The Netherlands is hopeful that the cycle of violence and tension in the region is stopped and ground is laid for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people and their suffering comes to an end”, Veldkamp said.

The Iranian foreign minister, for his pasrt, emphasized the need for an immediate stop to the Israeli war against Palestinians in Gaza, saying “The Islamic Republic of Iran is seeking to de-escalate tensions in the West Asia region. This is while the Zionist regime’s killing machine has fueled tensions and violence in the region.”

During their phone conversation, the two foreign ministers discussed other issues including Tehran-Amsterdam relations as well as the war in Ukraine.

India aim for gold rush with largest-ever contingent at Paralympics

India won a record 19 medals, including five gold, in the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021 for a 24th-place finish in the overall rankings

India aim for gold rush with largest-ever contingent at Paralympics

Indian contingents for the Paris Paralympics departs, in New Delhi.

Paris: Battered by life but not beaten by its many challenges, an 84-strong contingent of Indian para-athletes, the largest ever in the country’s history and a heady mix of youth and experience, would be eyeing an unparalleled gold rush when the Paralympic Games begin here on Wednesday.

India won a record 19 medals, including five gold, in the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021 for a 24th-place finish in the overall rankings. Three years on, the country’s target is more than 25 medals with a double-digit haul in gold. What has fuelled this ambition is the size of the contingent and the exceptional performances in the past one year.

India won a record 111 medals, including 29 gold, at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games last year. This was followed by unprecedented success at the World Para Athletics Championships in May where the country snared 17 medals, including half a dozen gold for a sixth-place finish in the overall standings.

Several medal winners in Hangzhou are in this Paralympics team, including top stars like world record-holding javelin thrower Sumit Antil (F64) and rifle shooter Avani Lekhara (10m Air Rifle Standing SH1). Both of them would be defending their gold medals won in Tokyo.

The Games, as much a celebration of sporting skills as human endurance, club athletes with similar functional abilities in terms of movement, coordination and balance into various classifications. The “degree and nature of their eligible impairments” decide these groups.

For India, the para-athletics team has been a major medal giver in the past and this time too, it is expected to be the biggest contributor with as many as 38 names in fray. Other top medal contenders include the likes of para-archer Sheetal Devi, who shoots with her legs as she was born without arms, landmine blast survivors Hokato Sema (shot putter) and Narayana Konganapalle (rower) and several other accident amputees. India is competing in 12 sports this time, as against nine by a 54-member team in Tokyo.

Shooter Manish Narwal and shuttler Krishna Nagar are also among those who would be looking to defend their gold medals won in Tokyo. Antil, whose left leg was amputated owing to an accident when he was 17, had also won gold in the para world championships in May and he is hoping to cross the 75m mark in Paris at the same venue where his able-bodied counterpart Neeraj Chopra won an Olympic silver earlier this month.

Lekhara was the best performer in Tokyo with one gold and a bronze and one of the two athletes to win two medals, the other being Singhraj Adhana (silver and bronze). Adhana, however, could not make the current team. Lekhara was the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic gold medal. She is now primed to join the club of three medal winners in the Paralympics.

Current Paralympics Committee of India (PCI) President Devendra Jhajharia, a javelin thrower, is the most decorated Indian Paralympian with two gold (2004 Athens and 2016 Rio) and a silver (2021 Tokyo). Joginder Singh Bedi won three medals in the 1984 Paralympics (silver in shot put, a bronze each in javelin and discus throw).

Deepthi Jeevanji (women’s 400m T20; intellectual disability), Rio Olympics gold-medallist Mariyappan Thangavelu (men’s high jump – T63), whose right leg was disabled after being run over by a bus, and Yogesh Kathuniya (men’s Discus Throw – F56), born with a neurological disorder that damaged his nervous system, would be also aiming to add to their existing Paralympic medal tally.

India’s mobile phone exports hit $6.5 billion in April-July, led by iPhones-Telangana Today

India’s mobile phone exports hit $6.5 billion in April-July, led by iPhones

New Delhi: Led by iPhones, exports of mobile phones from India reached $6.5 billion in the April-July period (Q1 FY25) – an almost 40 per cent surge from the same period last fiscal (FY23), industry data showed on Thursday.

iPhone exports surpassed $1 billion in the month of July – almost similar month-on-month performance as seen in the first quarter of FY25 — led by the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.

Currently, iPhone exports constitute about 70 per cent of the total mobile exports from the country, the industry data showed.

According to experts, Apple’s performance in the April-July period was marked by contrasting fortunes and the long-term growth outlook remains positive, with the company being well-positioned to capitalise on India’s growth trajectory in the coming years with big local manufacturing plans.

In the four-month period, online sales improved for iPhones. iPhone 15 remained top sellers, mainly due to their significant upgrades over previous generations.

Apple’s operations in the country reached $23.5 billion in value in the last fiscal (FY24). The Cupertino-based giant clocked nearly $8 billion in revenue in India in the last fiscal.

Key Apple suppliers Foxconn, Pegatron and Tata Electronics (earlier Wistron) have ramped up the assembly of iPhones, as the country is set to enter the crucial festive season soon.

According to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, with a three-fold increase in domestic production and an almost 100-fold jump in exports of mobile phones over the last six years, the mobile phone industry has matured in the country.

The electronics sector experienced rapid growth, reaching $155 billion in FY23. Production nearly doubled from $48 billion in FY17 to $101 billion in FY23, driven primarily by mobile phones, which now constitute 43 per cent of total electronics production.

India has significantly reduced its reliance on smartphone imports and is now manufacturing 99 per cent devices domestically, according to the government.

Is it dengue or something else in Hyderabad?

Is it dengue or something else in Hyderabad?

Hyderabad: A peculiar medical mystery is unfolding in Hyderabad. Despite exhibiting classic dengue symptoms like soaring fevers, dropping platelet counts and body aches, countless patients are returning negative for dengue tests. This puzzling trend has left caregivers and doctors in Hyderabad baffled and searching for answers.

As a result of negative resting, such cases are recorded as ‘suspected dengue’ by the Telangana State Public Health department, but no attempt is underway to understand whether a different viral agent is responsible for triggering the rise of such dengue-like infections.

Till now, neither the Public Health department nor Directorate of Medical Education (DME) have yet launched any concerted attempt at unraveling this mystery. No blood samples of dengue positive patients have been collected for conducting a thorough genomic sequencing in city-based central government genetic laboratories to understand the viral agent, which could possibly be behind the infections.

Frequent negative dengue tests are also causing individuals to assume that they do not carry any kind of viral infection. As a result, a large number of patients are not strictly adhering to the basic medication prescribed by the doctor for their infection, leaving the door open for complications at a later date.

There are two different kinds of dengue diagnostic tests that include NS1 and IgM tests and there is every possibility that sometimes these tests might be negative. According to experts in seasonal ailments, sometimes the timing of conducting the test may go wrong and that could lead to a negative test.

Usually, dengue NS1 antigen can be detected after the third day of infections and IgM antibodies can be detected any 5 to 6 days.

Senior physicians who are familiar with the dengue disease pattern in the two Telugu States caution individuals from ignoring basic medication and rest, which is prescribed by the caregiver.

“Some of the patients utilize rapid tests to undergo dengue tests and that also could be the reason for the large number of negative tests. However, please don’t ignore dengue-like symptoms,” doctors advised.

Important advice from top doctors to dengue patients:

• Avoid NSAIDS like aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac etc

• Paracetamol is ideal to reduce fever

• Steroids have no role in treatment of dengue

• Hydrate properly

• Papaya leaf juice does not provide any relief

• Platelet or blood transfusion only if platelets drop less than 15, 000 or 20, 000.

• Dengue tests are NS1 and IgM

• NS1 on day 2 of symptoms and IgM on test on Day 5

• Day 2 means second day of fever

• No use of antibiotics and anti-malarials in treating dengue

Holders Real Madrid Face Dortmund, Liverpool In New-Look Champions League

Holders Real Madrid will face Liverpool away and host Borussia Dortmund in a repeat of last season’s final in the league stage of the new-look Champions League, the draw for which took place on Thursday. Every team will play eight games against eight different opponents in the new format of Europe’s elite club competition, with all 36 clubs now pooled together into one league rather than split into groups. Madrid, who have signed France superstar Kylian Mbappe since winning a record-extending 15th European Cup, will also notably play AC Milan at home and will go to Atalanta.

Real beat last season’s Europa League winners Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup in Warsaw earlier this month.

Liverpool, who are back in the Champions League after a one-season absence, will also notably meet Milan and take on tournament debutants Girona.

However, supporters of the Anfield club will perhaps be most excited about the prospect of hosting German champions Bayer Leverkusen, coached by former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, winners of the competition in 2023, will play at home to Italian champions Inter Milan and go to both Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.

However, they were also handed more comfortable opponents including Club Brugge, Sparta Prague and Slovan Bratislava, who have never played in the modern Champions League proper.

Other standout head-to-heads will include Bayern Munich against both PSG and Barcelona, and Arsenal against Inter and Paris.

The number of clubs in the Champions League has increased from 32 in the past, with the 36 participants split into four seeded pots of nine for the draw.

Every team faces two teams from each of the four pots, one at home and one away. The first matches will be played on September 17, 18 and 19.

The two extra matchdays in the new league phase will take place in January, at the end of which the top eight clubs in the 36-team classification will advance directly to the last 16.

Those ranked between ninth and 24th place will go through to play a play-off round from which will emerge the remaining eight sides advancing to the last 16.

The bottom 12 in the league phase will be eliminated altogether, with no clubs parachuting down into the Europa League as in the past.

The Europa League and third-tier Conference League, the draws for which take place on Friday, will also now feature 36 clubs, although the latter competition will involve only six matchdays in the league phase.
