Markets flat amid profit-taking and weak asian trends

Mumbai: Stock market benchmark indices turned flat after beginning the trade on a positive note on Wednesday amid profit-taking in line with weak trends in Asian peers.

The 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 128.81 points to 81,840.57 in early trade. The NSE Nifty went up by 30.4 points to 25,048.15.

However, soon both the benchmark indices faced profit-taking and were trading lower. The BSE benchmark traded 42.46 points lower at 81,682.57 while the Nifty quoted 21.60 points down at 24,996.15.

Among the 30 Sensex firms, Mahindra & Mahindra, Power Grid, Tata Motors, Titan, Sun Pharma, ITC and Reliance Industries were the biggest gainers.

Bajaj Finserv, JSW Steel, Tata Steel, Tata Consultancy Services, HCL Technologies and Maruti were among the laggards.

In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong were trading lower.

The US markets ended with marginal gains on Tuesday.

“The market has entered a consolidation phase with low volatility and this trend is likely to continue in the near-term. Falling bond yields in the US has restrained FII selling and they have even turned marginal buyers. Going by previous trends, DIIs are likely to sell if FIIs continue to buy.

“This trend will keep the market within a range with a slight upward bias. This is a desirable and healthy trend, given the elevated valuations in the market,” said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought equities worth Rs 1,503.76 crore on Tuesday, according to exchange data.

Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 604.08 crore.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.14 per cent to USD 79.66 a barrel.

After oscillating between highs and lows, the BSE benchmark eked out a marginal gain of 13.65 points or 0.02 per cent to settle at 81,711.76 on Tuesday. The NSE Nifty ended almost flat, up 7.15 points or 0.03 per cent, at 25,017.75 — its ninth straight session of gains.

Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen impressed everyone with his performance at the Paris Olympics 2024 but he failed to secure the bronze medal by the smallest of margins. Lakshya became the first Indian male player to reach the badminton semi-finals at the Olympics but his dream of reaching the gold medal match was ended after a loss against top seed Viktor Axelsen. Lakshya faced Lee Zii Jia in the bronze medal match but he once again was defeated. Although he did not manage to add an Olympic medal to his name, his performance earned him a lot of praise and during a recent interaction, the youngster revealed his dream of becoming the “Virat Kohli of Indian badminton in coming years”.

“Why not I mean, but again he’s done a lot for Indian cricket. Yes I want to be the Virat Kohli of Indian badminton in coming years,” he said on the The Ranveer Show podcast.

Lakshya also opened up about his camaraderie with Tokyo and Paris gold medallist Viktor Axelsen. He said that he was inspired by Axelsen and they also trained together in Dubai.

“He has inspired me a lot, the way he conducts himself on and off the court. I had a two-week training period with him where I got to play with him and practice. Again, this Olympics semi final match against him. Yeah, again it has been quite inspiring for me that I played and I know in the match I had him. I had also beaten him in the past. These kind of things motivate me that yes I’m on the right track but again lot of work is there,” he added.

Earlier, Axelsen also was all praise for Lakshya and he even made a massive prediction.

“Lakshya is an amazing player. He has shown in this Olympics that he is a very, very strong competitor and I am sure in four years from now, he will be one of the favourites to win the gold. (He is) an amazing talent and a great guy and I wish him all the best,” Axelsen said.

New Delhi: In a rare case, doctors in Bengaluru removed a massive hairball — as large as a cricket ball — from the stomach of an 8-year-old girl, the hospital said on Thursday.

The girl Aditi (name changed) had a rare case of trichophagia — the compulsive habit of eating hair, also known as the Rapunzel syndrome.

Her parents were baffled by her repeated bouts of poor appetite and frequent vomiting over the last two years. They took her to many doctors including paediatricians, general physicians, and ENT specialists hoping to identify the problem and a cure for her condition.

They diagnosed Aditi’s condition to be gastritis and prescribed pills accordingly.

However, doctors at Aster’s Children and Women Hospital, Bengaluru, found that she had a trichobezoar — a term that describes all the hair mass that had accumulated in her gastrointestinal tract.

“Trichobezoar is an extremely rare condition and especially very rare in a child as young as Aditi. It is often associated with trichophagia, a psychological disorder where individuals eat hair. While commonly seen in adolescent girls, finding this in a much younger child highlights the uniqueness of this case,” Dr. Manjiri Somashekhar, Lead and Senior Consultant – Paediatric Surgery told IANS

An open stomach surgery, also known as laparotomy, had to be performed on Aditi because the hairball was very large and sticky and the situation was too complicated for an endoscopy to be performed.

This method, which was done in a total of two and a half hours, proved fruitful because it prevented any leakage into the peritoneal cavity, the doctor said.

If left undiagnosed, her condition could have led to severe malnutrition, anaemia, and significant bleeding from the stomach.

Following the surgery, she was placed on a special diet and continues to receive counselling and regular monitoring, the doctor said.

Engagement, expanding ties with all countries Iran’s policy

He made the remarks in a telephone conversation he received from Prime Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Støre on Wednesday night where he also stated, “If Iran is forced to do something by sanctions and pressure, the country’s approach and behavior will definitely be pushed in another direction.”

Referring to the historical background of the relations between Iran and Norway, President Pezeshkian stated that Islamic Republic of Iran is interested in expanding interactions with Norway, and it is hoped that these constructive talks will further strengthen and consolidate the relations between the two countries in line with establishing peace and stability and increasing security in the world.

Emphasizing the key role of Iran in creating security in the region and the world, the president said that Islamic Republic of Iran has always tried to spread peace and friendship and condemns any aggression anywhere in the world. He also said that Tehran is ready to cooperate to stop violence and insecurity in the world.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Pezeshkian lashed out at the US government’s violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or the JCPOA, and complained about the inaction of the European countries that failed to live up to their commitments to the agreement.

Islamic Republic of Iran fulfilled all its obligations within the framework of JCPOA, but it was the United States that withdrew the JCPOA unilaterally in May 2018, he criticized.

In addition to withdrawing US from the JCPOA, it is a matter of regret to say that the European countries did not implement one signle of their obligations under the JCPOA, Pezeshkian asserted.

The prime minister of Norway, for his part, expressed his concern about the escalation in the region, especially the attacks of the Zionist regime against Palestinian people in Gaza Strip, and said that Norway condemns Israeli attacks against Palestinians in Gaza and its disastrous consequences.

Norway, along with Ireland and Spain, was one of the first European countries that recognized the Palestinian people in the formation of an independent state, Gahr Støre said, further hoping that Israeli aggression against Palestinians will end as soon as possible.

US Open: Dimitrov defeats Hijikata, advances to third round

New York: Ninth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria overcame Australian Rinky Hijikata in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, 7-6(4), in a men’s singles second-round clash on Day 3 at the 2024 US Open here on Wednesday.

Dimitrov, the 33-year-old from Bulgaria, immediately dominated the first game and did not concede any points to the No. 62-ranked Hijikata. He took game one in a brisk three minutes, setting the pace early on. He controlled the match with deep shots to keep Hijikata at the baseline with little opportunity to approach the net.

The 23-year-old Hijikata ranked No. 62 in the ATP Rankings, traded advantages with the Bulgarian in game two, but two unforced errors closed the game and gave Dimitrov the first break of the set. Just when it seemed Hijikata was primed to push a winner at Dimitrov, he couldn’t close and struck the balls into the net, posting 11 unforced errors in the first set.

Dimitrov’s momentum continued, and he easily took the first two sets from Hijikata and only dropped two games in the process. But Hijikata did not surrender so easily. He came back in the third set, managing to push Dimitrov to a tiebreak. Dimitrov was first up to the line and relied on his lethal serve to quickly go up 2-0. Hijikata, the comeback competitor that he is, battled back, and it took Dimitrov six match points before finally taking the victory.

Dimitrov will next face either Argentina’s Sebastian Baez or Tallon Griekspoor in the third round, his fourth and final Round 3 appearance at a Slam this year.

The year 2024 has been a building season for the veteran player, who reached a career-high rank of No. 3 in 2017, but in the years since has seen a steady descent in the ranks. In April this year, Dimitrov was back in the Top 10 for the first time in six years after a deep run in Miami before falling to Italy’s Jannik Sinner in the final.

He would be hoping to prolong his stay in New York into next week and build on the momentum he has gained so far this year.

Rupee drops 2 paise to 83.95 against US dollar in early trade-Telangana Today

Forex traders noted that, from a macroeconomic perspective, the rupee’s downside seems well-contained, with the 84 level serving as critical support, likely due to anticipated RBI intervention to curb further depreciation. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 83.94, then weakened slightly to 83.95, marking a 2 paise loss from its previous close.

Rupee drops 2 paise to 83.95 against US dollar in early trade

Mumbai: Rupee depreciated 2 paise to 83.95 against the US dollar in morning trade on Wednesday, weighed down by a muted trend in domestic equities.

Forex traders said from a macroeconomic standpoint, the rupee’s downside appears well-contained, with the 84-level acting as a crucial support, likely bolstered by expected RBI intervention to prevent further depreciation.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.94, then lost further ground and touched 83.95, registering a loss of 2 paise from its previous close.

On Tuesday, the rupee depreciated by 6 paise to close at 83.93 against the American currency.

According to CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari the Reserve Bank’s interventions not only seem to limit the rupee’s downside but also cap its appreciation.

“This was evident earlier in the week when, despite significant dollar weakness, the rupee remained steady, unlike other emerging market currencies that experienced notable gains,” Pabari said.

The rupee is expected to trade within a narrow range in the near term, with an upside limit around 83.80 and solid support near 84.05, with a broader range of 83.60 to 84.05 in the medium term, Pabari added.
Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, gained 0.17 per cent to 100.72 points.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, gained 0.14 per cent to USD 79.66 per barrel in futures trade.
In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex fell 43.51 points, or 0.05 per cent, to 81,668.25 points, while the Nifty was down by 21.85 points, or 0.09 per cent, to 24,995.90 points.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets on Tuesday, as they purchased shares worth Rs 1,503.76 crore, according to exchange data.

UK Bans 2 Hezbollah, Hamas Financiers From Entering Country

UK Bans 2 Hezbollah, Hamas Financiers From Entering Country

Britain banned Hamas in 2021 and under the its Terrorism Act. (Representational)

London:

The British government said on Thursday it had imposed a travel ban on Mustafa Ayash, who it sanctioned earlier this year for promoting terrorism, and suspected Hezbollah financier Nazem Ahmad.

The pair, who were already subject to asset freezes under domestic counter-terrorism powers, now cannot enter Britain, it said.

“The travel bans are a part of continued efforts to protect the integrity of the UK economy from terrorist financing threats,” the British government said in a statement.

Ayash was sanctioned in March this year for providing financial support to a media network which the government said supported the Palestinian Hamas militant group and promotes terrorism.

Britain banned Hamas in 2021 and under the Terrorism Act, anyone expressing support for the group, flying its flag or arranging meetings for the organisation is in breach of the law.

Britain sanctioned Ahmad in April 2023 on suspicion of financing Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah movement. He was also sanctioned by the US in 2019.

He has an extensive art collection in the UK and conducts business with multiple UK-based artists, art galleries and auction houses, according to a 2023 statement by the British government.
