Joe Root equalled the England record of 33 Test centuries held by Alastair Cook when he reached three figures on the first day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord’s on Thursday. Root, 81 not out at tea, spent 12 balls on 99 and one of the outstanding batsmen of his generation almost played onto Lahiru Kumara when one run shy of a century. But Root, opening the face, elegantly guided the paceman for four between slip and gully to complete a hundred with his 13th four in 162 balls faced.

He was eventually out for 143, his sixth Test century at Lord’s, when he miscued a reverse scoop off fast bowler Milan Rathnayake high to Pathum Nissanka at point, with England then 308-7.

By then, Root had drawn level with fellow former England captain Cook’s record of 33 Test centuries, but in his 145th match compared to the retired opener’s career tally of 161 Tests.

It also took the 33-year-old Root into joint-tenth place in an all-time list of Test century-makers headed by India great Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 51 hundreds in 200 Tests from 1989-2013.

Significantly, the 33-year-old Root is the only batsman in this group who is still an active cricketer, with all the others retired from Test duty.

National Day of Fight against Terrorism in Iran

August 29 is the National Day of Fight against Terrorism in Iran. On this day in 1981, the Mojahedin-e-Khalq Organization (AKA: MKO, MEK, PMOI) exploded the office of the Prime Minister of Iran, and martyred President Rajai and Primer Bahonar and several other officials.

In the Islamic Republic of Iran, the week before the martyrdom anniversary is commemorated as ‘Government Week’ to honor the nation’s significant political leaders.

On August 30, 1981, a deadly explosion occurred when a victim opened a briefcase filled with explosives brought by Masoud Keshmiri, an agent of the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MKO) terror group.

The attack happened in the afternoon at the Iranian Prime Minister’s office on Pasteur Street during an extraordinary meeting attended by President Rajai, Prime Minister Bahonar, and various military and security officials.

The assailant, posing as a security official, served tea to the attendees and placed the bomb-laden briefcase under the table. Subsequent investigations revealed that the briefcase contained over one kilogram of TNT, similar to the Hafte Tir bombing two months prior. The details of both attacks were only uncovered afterward, making it impossible to implement preventative security measures.

After placing the bomb, the infiltrator spoke briefly with Khosrow Tehrani, the head of the intelligence unit, then left the meeting, claiming an urgent matter, and met accomplices at Pasteur Square who helped him escape.

Witnesses reported that the bomb detonated when a victim opened the briefcase, destroying the first and second floors of the building. The explosion killed eight people and injured 23 others, who were rushed to hospitals. Due to severe burns, Bahonar and Rajai were identified later through dental records.

Who were Bahonar and Rajai?

The two most prominent victims of the terrorist attack were Mohammad Ali Rajai, the President of Iran, and Mohammad-Javad Bahonar, the Prime Minister of Iran.

Rajai, a graduate of Tarbiat Moallem University and a teacher of mathematics, was 48 years old when he was martyred. After the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, he was first appointed as the minister of education, serving seven months.

Then, in the mid-1980s, he entered the Iranian Parliament or Majles as a representative of the people of Tehran. He held that position for 15 months.

Rajai was also appointed as the Prime Minister and after the removal of Abolhassan Banisadr from the presidency, he was elected as the second president with over 13 million votes.

Bahonar was a distinguished Islamic theologian educated at Qom Seminary and the University of Tehran, where he received his doctorate. He was 47 years old when he was martyred.

He also served as the Secretary General of the Islamic Republican Party after the martyrdom of Ayatollah Hossein Beheshti, and he was also a member of the Assembly of Experts for Constitution that drafted the new Iranian constitution.

Both Bahonar and Rajai, together with the victims of the earlier Hafte Tir bombing, were buried in the Hafte Tir Mausoleum at the Behesht-e Zahra cemetery in the south of Tehran.

In addition to Bahonar and Rajai, six other people were also martyred in the blast.

Iranian court holds 15th trial session in MKO terrorism case

In early July, the 15th trial session of the hearing on crimes of members of the Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) terrorist group was held in Tehran.

The new round was held at the 11th branch of the criminal court of Tehran province in a case that tries 104 natural persons as well as one legal entity in absentia.

Judge Dehqani, who presided over the session, said judicial notices have already been sent out to all defendants of the case under the Islamic penal code of Iran, stressing that the defendants have neither hired a lawyer nor filed a defense with the court.

The MKO has carried out numerous terrorist attacks against Iranian civilians and government officials since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Out of the nearly 17,000 Iranians killed in terrorist attacks over the past four decades, about 12,000 have fallen victim to the MKO’s acts of terror.

New Delhi:  In a further boost to the ‘Make in India’s initiative, business conglomerate Tata Group is geared up for a new iPhone assembly plant in the country that is likely to become operational in the festive quarter of 2024.

The iPhone unit by Tata is being built in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. The iPhone facility is expected to employ over 50,000 workers, mostly women.

The 250-acre Hosur plant will manufacture iPhones using components from a unit that Tata set up a couple of years ago. Tata Electronics is reportedly investing Rs 6,000 crore in the new plant.

The Tata Group acquired Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Wistron’s India operations for $125 million in October last year. The iPhone contract manufacturers in India now include Foxconn, Tata and Pegatron.

Reports first surfaced in December last year that the Tata Group is planning to build one of India’s largest iPhone assembly plants in Tamil Nadu’s Hosur. Tata already operates the iPhone manufacturing plant in Karnataka, which it has purchased from Wistron.

The shift in Apple manufacturing in the country happens as the tech giant aims to manufacture more than 50 million iPhones in India per year. Meanwhile, Apple has begun to train thousands of workers at its factory in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu (operated by Foxconn) for launching latest iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models in the country post the global debut this fall.

Apple is set to make its ‘Make in India’ iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models available in the country right after the global launch.

iPhone 16 is set to be made available on the first day of global sales in India, just like last year when iPhone 15 arrived in the domestic market on the very first day of the global sale.

It will be shortly followed by iPhone 16 Plus models. Foxconn is a major Apple supplier globally and has invested 1.4 billion dollars in India to date, with more to come.

The Taiwanese contract manufacturing giant’s business in India has surged to 10 billion dollars till last fiscal, according to its CEO and Chairman, Young Liu . Apple’s India operations reached 23.5 billion dollars in value in the last fiscal.

Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert across Telangana, warning of extremely heavy rainfall till September 2. Meanwhile, Hyderabad is under a yellow alert, anticipating moderate rains and thundershowers over the weekend.

Weather experts indicate that there would be a shift from recent nighttime downpours to more persistent daytime rainfall. This change is expected to bring cooler, breezier conditions across the state. Intense downpours are anticipated in the northern, central, and eastern parts of Telangana.

For Friday, the IMD has issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall in Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal, and Hanamkonda districts. A yellow alert for heavy rain is also in effect for Adilabad, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Jagtial, Karimnagar, Nalgonda, and Hyderabad.

Saturday’s forecast extends the warning to districts including Nizamabad, Jagital, Rajanna Sircilla, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad, and Siddipet. Hyderabad and several other districts will experience moderate yet intense downpours, thunderstorms, and strong winds.

Sunday’s forecast continues the trend with isolated heavy rains expected in Adilabad, Kumram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, and Kamareddy.

Since the Southwest monsoon onset in early June, Telangana has recorded an average of 627.6 mm of rainfall, surpassing the average of 558.6 mm by 12 per cent. Hyderabad too has seen 511.5 mm of rain, exceeding the usual 450 mm by 14 per cent.

Despite these increases, both the city and the state are still within ‘normal’ rainfall levels. However, with the IMD’s forecast of extremely heavy rains for Friday and Saturday, the total rainfall for Hyderabad and other districts in Telangana is expected to rise further during the ongoing monsoon.
