"Will Consider Court Case": Assam Opposition Party On Muslim Marriage Bill

'Will Consider Court Case': Assam Opposition Party On Muslim Marriage Bill

AIUDF leaders meet Himanta Sarma with memorandum to protect section of Muslims in Upper Assam

Guwahati:

Assam’s main Opposition party the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) today said it will consider going to court against the Himanta Biswa Sarma government’s decision to ensure mandatory registration of marriage and divorce of Muslims.

The Assam assembly earlier today passed the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill, 2024, introduced by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan on Tuesday.

AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam said they are not in agreement with the bill.

“There are a lot of loopholes which we have pointed out. We want amendments to be brought first. Though the Chief Minister has assured of amendments, the bill looks like an extension of the Special Marriage Act, which is not acceptable to us,” Mr Islam said.

He said the Special Marriage Act is for any religion, while the Assam bill is only for Muslims, so both laws cannot be similar, he said, adding they will think about going to court.

“Since the new legislations deal with the registration of Muslim marriages and divorce, we have suggested some amendments since the Chief Minister assured it does not interfere with Muslim Sharia law,” Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia said.

While replying to queries on the marriage bill earlier in the day, Mr Sarma said all earlier registrations of marriages conducted by kazis will remain valid and only new ones will come under the purview of the legislation.

“We are not interfering with the marriages solemnised by Islamic rituals under Muslim Personnel Law at all. Our only condition is that Islam prohibited marriages will not be registered,” he said.

He said child marriage registration will be completely banned with the enactment of this new law. The bill will also prevent men from deserting their wives after marriage and strengthen the institution of marriage, he added.

Earlier, Muslim marriages were registered by kazis. However, this new bill will ensure that all marriages of the community will be registered with the government.

"Kill Him, Will Give My Land…": Manipur BJP Spokesperson's FIR Over Death Threats, Attack On House

'Kill Him, Will Give My Land...': Manipur BJP Spokesperson's FIR Over Death Threats, Attack On House

Manipur BJP spokesperson and Thadou tribe leader T Michael Lamjathang Haokip (File)

Imphal/Guwahati/New Delhi:

Manipur BJP spokesperson and Thadou tribe leader T Michael Lamjathang Haokip has filed a police case after two dozen people, some of them armed, burned a portion of his house and fired shots in the air in Churachandpur on Sunday night.

In the first information report (FIR), Mr Haokip named 15 people as “directly or indirectly” responsible for the attack on his property and family. He also named two people who allegedly asked members of a WhatsApp group to kill him. One of the two promised to give “village land” to anyone who kills the state BJP spokesperson.

“… Suspect the involvement of the fake Thadou Tribe Council (TTC-GHQ) leaders and operatives, who have made violent rhetoric and provocative statements,” Mr Michael said in the FIR.

He attached printouts of the WhatsApp group’s screenshots which showed the discussions to kill him. The police and the cyber cell will check the phone numbers with their service providers, and if needed will take help from central anti-terror cybersecurity experts, Mr Haokip told NDTV. He declined to give further details.

In the purported screenshot of the WhatsApp group chat attached to the FIR, one of the members had written, “SA (separate administration) will not be acceptable without killing LJT (Lamjathang) first, even if the central government is willing to grant us.” Another member wrote, “I promise to give my village land if anyone kills Lamjathang.”

NDTV has seen a copy of the FIR, which shows some phone numbers in the WhatsApp group.

Mr Haokip said the attacks and threats came as a result of him raising awareness about his tribe, Thadou, being inaccurately referred to as a Kuki tribe amid the ethnic tension in Manipur. He said it was the second time his house in Churachandpur was attacked, allegedly by those who do not accept the Thadou tribe’s distinct identity.

The police case was filed a day after a new video threatening to kill the BJP spokesperson and Thadou leader was shared widely on social media. The video shows a man in black tactical wear surrounded by three in camouflage battle dress carrying AK series assault rifles. All of them wore masks.

“Lamjathang, if you speak against the community one more time or disgrace the community, we will kill you whether you are in  Guwahati or Delhi… Meiteis didn’t differentiate between Thadou, Kuki or Zomi,” the man in the middle said.

The four men cannot be village defence volunteers who usually carry licenced single-barrelled and small-calibre handguns, a retired police officer in Churachandpur said, requesting anonymity.

“They can only be insurgents, and this threat can’t be taken lightly, as they are openly claiming they can kill a civilian anywhere in the country. This would not be the first time someone from Manipur is facing a threat to life even while living outside the state,” the retired officer said.

NDTV couldn’t independently verify the video, though some members of the Thadou tribe said the video and the dialect heard in it are genuine, based on what their own sources told them in Churachandpur.

The TTC-GHQ which Mr Haokip alleged is a “fake” organisation has six advisers, and 10 executive members, according to the last published information of the group’s structure. The TTC did not take the consent of four of them before making them members of the “council”. The four have given in writing that they were not aware of their membership of the TTC. They requested anonymity for fear of attacks.

“My father’s consent was not there. Clarification already given,” the son of one of the four people said.

Calls to the TTC’s publicly available numbers went unanswered.

The TTC has been condemning Mr Haokip’s comments on the Thadou tribe not being part of Kuki. The TTC has said in a statement that it is the mainstream Thadou body and affiliated to the Kuki Inpi Manipur. “… Appropriate action shall be initiated if they continued to misuse Thadou again in future,” the TTC had said in a statement on July 21.

In its recent statement on August 20, the TTC criticised a new Thadou body called Thadou Community International (TCI) as not genuine and formed by some people “to collaborate with Chief Minister N Biren Singh”.

Mr Haokip is one of the key members of the TCI, a group that claims to be a global Thadou tribe platform to look into critical issues facing the community, particularly in Manipur.

No one was injured in the attack at Mr Haokip’s house on Sunday night. Four families displaced by the violence in Manipur also live in four small structures at his family plot, Mr Haokip had said.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and other leaders had strongly condemned the attack. “…I consider this personal harm being put on one of our recognised tribes as a direct challenge to the unity and integrity of the state. Attacks on any particular community of the recognised tribes of Manipur, as well as the attack on the family of the BJP spokesperson, are condemned in the strongest terms. We will initiate appropriate legal action against the culprits,” Mr Singh had said in a post on X.

The clashes between the valley-dominant Meitei community and the nearly two dozen tribes under the Kukis nomenclature – a term given by the British in colonial times – who are dominant in some hill areas of Manipur, has killed over 220 people and internally displaced nearly 50,000.

The general category Meiteis want to be included under the Scheduled Tribes category, while the Kukis who share ethnic ties with people in neighbouring Myanmar’s Chin State and Mizoram want a separate administration carved out of Manipur, citing discrimination and unequal share of resources and power with the Meiteis.

Big Setback For Jagan Reddy As 2 Rajya Sabha MPs Resign, Set To Join TDP

Mopidevi Venkataramana and Beda Mastan Rao submitted their resignation to Veep Jagdeep Dhankhar today

New Delhi:

In a big setback to the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP, two Rajya Sabha MPs have resigned from the party and their membership in the Upper House. Vice President and Chairman of Rajya Sabha Jagdeep Dhankhar has accepted their resignation, news agency PTI has said, quoting sources.

The two YSRCP MPs are Mopidevi Venkataramana and Beda Mastan Rao. While Mr Venkataramana’s term in Rajya Sabha was till June 2026, Mr Rao’s was till June 2028. Both are likely to join the N Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP, which swept the Andhra Pradesh elections that were held alongside the general election this year. The two leaders recently met TDP chief and Andhra Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

Following these exits, YSRCP has nine MPs in the Upper House and four in the Lok Sabha. The two MPs who quit today are likely to be re-inducted as Rajya Sabha MPs, this time from TDP. This is also good news for TDP because it will reopen its account in the Upper House, where it has not had a seat since 2019.

Mr Rao was earlier with the TDP and represented Andhra’s Kavali constituency from 2009 to 2014. In 2019, he joined the YSRCP. Mr Venkataramana, on the other hand, was with the Congress. He is a two-time MLA who has served as a state minister in the government of Jagan Mohan Reddy’s father, late YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

The exits are a fresh blow to Jagan Mohan Reddy’s party that has been struggling to check an exodus of leaders in the aftermath of the poll setback. Managing just four Lok Sabha seats this time and its Rajya Sabha strength dropping, YSRCP’s influence in Delhi is on the wane.

As for the larger picture, this is good news for the BJP. The NDA recently touched the majority mark in the Upper House and this will help them ensure passage of key legislation. If these two MPs switch to TDP, NDA’s numbers will be bolstered further.

Hyderabad: Four Hyderabad-based entrepreneurs donated Rs 3.7 crore to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Sri Venkateswara Annaprasadam Trust, which offers free food to pilgrims.

The four devotees — P Venkateswarlu, Rajamouli, Prasada Rao and M Lakshmi Kumari — handed over a cheque for Rs 3.7 crore to Additional Executive Efficer Ch Venkaiah Chowdary in Tirumala.

“Potti Venkateswarlu, Rajamouli, Prasada Rao and Malathi Lakshmi Kumari have donated Rs 3.7 crore to SV Annaprasadam Trust on August 28,” a TTD release stated on Thursday.

Former Chief Minister NT Rama Rao started the Venkateswara Nithya Annadanam Endowment Scheme in 1985 to serve free food to 2,000 pilgrims a day.

Run by donations from across the world, the trust deposits funds in nationalised banks and meets its expenses to serve food to devotees through the interest earned on them. The mega kitchens of TTD, cooks nearly 14 tonnes of rice and procure 10,000 litres of milk daily.

\Up to 7.5 tonnes of vegetables, which come as donations, are used in Annaprasadam canteens daily. On auspicious days such as New Year’s Day, Vaikunta Ekadasi, Rathasapthami and Garuda Seva, over 2 lakh pilgrims are fed with beverages and food.

Massive Palestinian flag unfurled on Madrid's Toledo Bridge

A massive Palestinian flag was unfurled on Madrid’s iconic Toledo Bridge on Sunday as hundreds of pro-Palestine protesters gathered to express solidarity with civilians in Gaza and demand an immediate ceasefire.

Footage shows demonstrators atop the bridge, waving the massive flag of Palestine and chanting pro-Palestine slogans. Demonstrators gathered below the bridge chimed in, brandishing Palestinian flags, scarves, and banners representing various nations, amplifying their message of peace and justice.

“This is one more action, which links all those we have been carrying out since October 7, to denounce a genocide that is being broadcast live to the world, with the world standing by impassively. With daily massacres, with an average of more than 100 dead per day, 70 percent of them children, women and civilians,” said a protester.

“They are destroying the school, the houses, the infrastructure, the universities, everything. They are killing the humanity,” added another.

A third supporter emphasized the urgency of the situation, warning that the ‘disaster’ faced by Palestinians ‘can happen anywhere else if we turn a blind eye.’

This rally was organized by the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement, a Palestinian-led initiative, alongside the Palestinian-Hispanic Association Jerusalem, under the slogan ‘Let’s Stop the Genocide,’ aiming to raise awareness and galvanize global support for the urgent need for peace in the region.

Moscow: Russia’s Foreign Ministry announced 92 additions on Wednesday to its list of Americans banned from entering the country, including some journalists who formerly worked in Russia, and law enforcement and business people.

A Ministry statement said the bans were imposed “in response to the Russophobic course pursued by the Biden administration with the declared goal of ‘inflicting a strategic defeat on Moscow’.”

It said the banned journalists represent “leading liberal-globalist publications involved in the production and dissemination of fakes about Russia and the Russian armed forces”.

The new list of banned Americans includes 11 current or former staff members of the Wall Street Journal — including its Editor in Chief Emma Tucker. She had repeatedly criticised Russia for the arrest and conviction on espionage charges of WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich, who spent 16 months behind bars before being released in August in a prisoner exchange.

The ban has also been imposed on five New York Times journalists, including Kyiv bureau chief Andrew Kramer, and four from The Washington Post.

Other Americans on the list include people working for law enforcement agencies, academics and figures from businesses and think tanks.

Russia has banned more than 2,000 Americans from entry, according to a Ministry list.

Why Jay Shah Was Elected ICC Head: Official Says "Board Doesn't Want…"

Jay Shah will take over as the ICC chairman from December 1, 2024. Jay Shah, at 35, will become the youngest to take over as the chairman of the global governing body. Shah has been serving as the BCCI secretary since October 2019 and chairman of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021. Jay Shah got the vote of 15 out of 16 members in the ICC Board to be elected the next ICC chairman.

Cricket West Indies CEO Johnny Grave has now talked in details about the reason behind Jay Shah’s election.

“The ICC board doesn’t want to waste too much time on internal politics. If you look at Jay’s leadership at the BCCI, it has been wonderful. He has hosted the Women’s Premier League, successfully oversaw the 50-over World Cup in India and has signed huge broadcast deals with IPL and for BCCI,” Cricket West Indies CEO Johnny Grave told The Indian Express.

Meanwhile, former Australia head coach John Buchanan on Thursday urged the International Cricket Council, which will be led by BCCI secretary Jay Shah soon, to take ‘good decisions’ for cricket’s long-term future.

Buchanan, who coached Australia to two separate runs of world record 16 consecutive Test wins and ODI World Cup wins in 2003 and 2007, said the ICC needs to be address the concerns over growing number of T20 leagues. “It’s an interesting question. With Jay Shah now being installed at the head of the ICC, it really is important that the ICC makes some very, very good long-term decisions for the game,” Buchanan told PTI when asked if India and Australia will continue to produce Test cricketers of the same caliber they have thus far.

“We see a proliferation of T20 leagues, T10 leagues, (The) Hundreds and so on… the reality is, that is the future of the game. The young children that we’re speaking here today will be inspired by and have a real love for playing that short form of the game,” he said at the launch of ‘Ready Steady Go Kids’ multi-sport program.

However, Buchanan underlined the importance of Test cricket.

“The game is built on Test cricket. That’s the true fabric of the game. For the ICC to make some good decisions, they have to be very, very mindful of how many leagues they approve and sanction, which means by doing that, it will limit the number of leagues that players are drawn to, for a start,” he said.

Buchanan said the ICC will have to find a way to keep the ODI format relevant since it helps in transition between Tests and T20s.

“Test cricket is really important. We’ve got the proliferation of the short-format game. We need to keep the transition game, which is the one-day game,” he said.

“It’s too difficult for players to be able to play quality cricket with only two formats, meaning a short format and a long format. We need that intervening, that transition format of 50-over cricket.” Buchanan said players cannot be blamed for trying to make most of the opportunities.

“You want to be well paid for because you’re at the top of your game. Who knows how long they’ve got injury-wise, selection-wise, age-wise…” he later told reporters.

“They’ve got to try and exploit that and that’s what the leagues are offering at the moment. I don’t blame them for that.” Buchanan said he anticipates the Australian Test side to undergo a phase of transition after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of changes in that Australian Test side because most of them are over 30,” he said.

Name Legal Representative For X Or Face Suspension: Brazil Top Court To Musk

The Supreme Court posted a screenshot of court decision on its X account (Representational)

A Brazilian Supreme Court justice on Wednesday ordered billionaire Elon Musk to name a legal representative for his messaging platform X in Brazil within 24 hours or face the site’s suspension in the country.

Earlier this month, X announced it would close its operations and fire its staff in Brazil due to what it called “censorship orders” from the judge, Alexandre de Moraes. Its service would remain available for users in Brazil, it said.

X, at the time, claimed Moraes secretly threatened one of the company’s legal representatives in Brazil with arrest if it did not comply with legal orders to take down some content from its platform.

In Wednesday’s ruling, Moraes says that under the country’s law regulating internet issues, companies that do not respect Brazilian legislation or the confidentiality of private information could have their activities temporarily suspended.

The Supreme Court posted a screenshot of Wednesday’s court decision on its X account, tagging Musk’s and X’s Global Government Affairs accounts.

Hours after the judge’s decision, Musk said on X that Moraes “has repeatedly broken the laws he has sworn to uphold”.

Earlier this year, Moraes ordered X to block certain accounts implicated on investigations of so-called “digital militias” that have been accused of spreading fake news and hate messages during the government of far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro.

After Musk challenged that decision and said he would reactivate accounts on X that the judge had ordered blocked, Moraes opened an inquiry into the billionaire in early April.

X representatives eventually reversed course and told the Supreme Court that the social media giant would obey the legal rulings. In April, however, Moraes asked X to explain why it allegedly had not fully complied with his decisions.

In response, lawyers representing X in Brazil told the Supreme Court that “operational faults” had allowed users who were ordered blocked to stay active on the social media platform.

Musk has called the Moraes’ decisions regarding X “unconstitutional”.

Topics such as “Twitter will end”, “Elon Musk” and “Alexandre de Moraes” were trending on X in Brazil on Thursday, with hundreds of thousands of posts. Public reaction included mostly “memes” making light of the situation.

Among more serious reactions, some X users shared harsh criticism over Moraes’ decisions, saying he was harming freedom of speech in Brazil. On the other hand, other users sided with Moraes, saying Musk should not be above Brazilian law.

X, formerly Twitter, is widely used in Brazil, and is an important means of communication for politicians especially.

Shocking Dashcam Video From Bengaluru Shows Woman Faking Car Accident

Shocking Dashcam Video From Bengaluru Shows Woman Faking Car Accident

The video has gone viral, raising concerns about road safety and the need for dashcams.

In a bizarre incident, a woman was caught on the dashcam of a car faking an accident by falling in front of the moving car on one of the city roads of Bengaluru. The video shows how, after spotting her, the driver slowed down, but she fell onto the car and thereafter tried to attack him. She behaved erratically before leaving the scene.

The video footage was shared by Shonee Kapoor on X on August 29, urging social media users to install dashcams. He warned users who drive, “Put a dashcam. You never know when this happens to you. Especially when it is a lady. If something happens, people will take her side instantly.”

The video shows the man driving through Bengaluru when the woman, who was standing in the middle of the road, began to hit the vehicles as they passed by. Despite the driver’s attempts to avoid her, she threw herself onto his car. The video has invited speculation on social media that the woman may either be mentally ill, “possessed,” or simply trying a trick in order to beg money from drivers.

It notably caught on the dashcam that the woman was standing in the road and deliberately hit the bonnet of the car, faking she was struck. It also revealed from footage that the driver safely drove the vehicle when such unusual behaviour was deliberately carried out by the woman. Further, the video went viral with questions regarding such dangerous acts on busy roads.
