Hezbollah attacks 2 Israeli military headquarters

Hezbollah forces targeted an Israeli military position in Kiryat Shmona with Katyusha rockets and the regime’s Meron base with artillery and missiles.

The Resistance movement said that the anti-Israeli operations were carried out in support of the Palestinian people in the besieged Gaza Strip and in response to the regime’s fresh aggression that targeted Lebanon earlier on Tuesday.

The Lebanese Resistance movement has been conducting regular attacks since early October against the Israeli regime’s military position in retaliation for the occupying regime’s offensives against Gaza and southern Lebanon.

Israel waged its brutal war on besieged Gaza on October 7 after Hamas carried out an unprecedented operation against the occupying entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Israel has imposed a complete siege on the densely populated territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food, and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

Blinking May Be Helping Us Process Big, Slow-Changing Patterns: Study

Blinking May Be Helping Us Process Big, Slow-Changing Patterns: Study

The act of blinking changes the visual input to the retina

New Delhi:

Along with keeping eyes moist, blinking may be helping us better notice big, gradually changing patterns, according to new research. Blinking provides information to the brain about the overall big picture of a visual scene, researchers said.

The act of blinking changes the visual input to the retina, thereby effectively re-arranging the visual information being processed, according to Michele Rucci, a professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, the University of Rochester, US.

“By modulating the visual input to the retina, blinks effectively reformat visual information, yielding luminance signals that differ drastically from those normally experienced when we look at a point in the scene,” said Rucci, corresponding author of the study published in the journal ‘Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences’.

For the study, the researchers tracked eye movements in humans. Combining this data with computer models, they studied how blinking affects what the eyes see compared to when the eyelids are closed.

They found that the rapid eyelid movement while blinking changes the light patterns that activate the retina. This created a different kind of visual information for the brain to process, compared to when our eyes are open and focused on a specific point.

“We show that human observers benefit from blink transients as predicted from the information conveyed by these transients,” said Bin Yang, a graduate student in Rucci’s lab, and the study’s first author.

“Thus, contrary to common assumption, blinks improve — rather than disrupt — visual processing, amply compensating for the loss in stimulus exposure,” said Yang.

Chemists told to source stock from authorised units

Hyderabad: Intensified seizures of spurious drugs, crackdown on medical shops and constant advocacy by TS Drug Control Administration (TSDCA) appears to have successfully galvanised chemists and druggists in Hyderabad and elsewhere in the State, to keep a close eye on the sources from where they are procuring their stocks.

Recently, the All-India Organisation for Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD), following strenuous efforts by drug control administrations from various Indian States, had released an advisory, urging its members in all the Indian States to make sure that they procure their stocks from locally known authorised wholesalers.

A few days ago, the Stateunits of AIOCD and Telangana State Chemists and Druggists Associations (TSCDA) have also launched coordinated efforts to spread awareness on the issue among its members.

For the past few months, the drug inspectors from TSDCA have been actively taking stringent measures on wholesalers/dealers, chemists and druggists involved in sale of spurious drugs. At the same time, the regulatory authorities have also been quite vocal about drug store owners procuring life-saving drugs from authorised dealers.

The AIOCD and TSCDA has given strict instructions to its members i.e., chemists and drug store owners, to procure medicines only from their own authorised wholesalers/ distributors.

As a part of these efforts, the Chemists and Druggists Association has also been conducting a series of general body meetings with their members, so that they follow the advisory.

Senior members of TSDCA told Telangana Today that the association members are now very well aware of the authorised stockists of medicines, who, in turn, procure their stock from licensed pharma manufacturing units.

“This is the only way to curb the menace of spurious and sub-standard drugs that are making way into the market. There are nearly 4,000 members of TSDCA in Hyderabad and elsewhere, who have been made very well aware of the need to source their drugs from licensed companies,” members of TSCDA said.

70,000 pro-Palestine people in UK urge London to end arms exports to Israel

Nearly 70,000 people have signed a petition calling on 10 Downing Street to put an end to Britain’s arms exports to Israel.

The petition was launched by Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) and a cross party group of British lawmakers.

It came as Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, MP Alicia Kearns, has already admitted that the Foreign Office has received “official legal advice that Israel has broken international humanitarian law, but the government has not announced it.”

The UK’s arms export guidelines maintain that it “will not grant a license if it determines there is a clear risk that the items might be used to commit or facilitate a serious violation of international humanitarian law.”

On Monday, Labour MP Zarah Sultana grilled Prime Minister Rishi Sunak when she asked him whether Kearns told the truth about Israel’s violation of international humanitarian law.

“Was the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee telling the truth – yes or no?” Sultana asked Sunak, who refused to deny that the Foreign Office had received such legal advice. “Israel is committed and capable of complying with international humanitarian law,” Sunak said.

His remarks came as a majority of Britons have called on London to no longer give arms to Israel, whose military has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip since October 7.

They fear Israel may be using British-made weapons in military actions that violate international law in the Palestinian territory.

More than 1,000 lawyers, academics, and retired judges, including former president of the Supreme Court Baroness Hale, have signed an open letter underscoring that the constant flow of British arms into Israel puts the UK in clear breach of international law.

Late March, a cross party group of 135 lawmakers wrote to the foreign and business secretaries, stating the case for a suspension of arms export licenses to Israel is “overwhelming.”

Canada, Japan, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands have already announced they no longer ship arms to Israel.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, however, said on April 9 that the UK would keep exporting arms to the occupying regime anyway and that London’s position in this regard remained “unchanged.”

Sunak echoed Cameron’s remarks on April 10. He said arms exports to Israel would continue as before and that the flow would not be suspended.

Early this month, Israel’s deadly strikes on the World Central Kitchen (WCK) in central Gaza drew worldwide condemnation.

Three of the WCK aid workers killed by Israeli airstrikes were Britons, who were all UK military veterans working on its security team.

Britain supplied 42 million pounds ($53 million) of arms to Israel in 2022.

How Cops Caught Men Who Opened Fire Outside Salman Khan's Home

How Cops Caught Men Who Opened Fire Outside Salman Khan's Home

Police had recovered a live round from the spot after the firing incident.

Mumbai:

The original Aadhaar cards submitted by two suspects, wanted in connection with the firing at actor Salman Khan’s Bandra residence, for a rent agreement and bike purchase documents helped police to establish their identities, an official said on Tuesday.

After identifying them, police used human and technical intelligence to track them.

Joint teams of the Kutch-West and Mumbai Police caught Vicky Gupta (24) and Sagar Pal (21) late Monday night from Mata No Madh village in Gujarat, less than 48 hours after one of them had opened fire at Khan’s house.

“A preliminary probe suggested that both Sagar Pal and Vicky Gupta were hired by the gang of Lawrence Bishnoi to open fire at Khan’s house,” Deputy Inspector General of Police, Kutch West, Mahendra Bagadiya, said earlier in the day.

A Mumbai Police official said the men, originally from Champaran in Bihar, travelled to Mumbai Central station on February 28.

They rented a house near Panvel city in Raigad, around 13 km away from Salman Khan’s farmhouse, he said. However, it is not known whether they had conducted a recce of the farmhouse.

He also said they used their original Aadhaar cards for a rent agreement.

“The agreement was made with the house owner wherein the one-time deposit is fixed at Rs 10,000 and monthly rent at Rs 3,500,” he said.

After staying for a few days in Panvel, the duo travelled to Champaran on March 18 for Holi celebrations. They returned on April 1, he said.

On April 2, Vicky Gupta purchased a second-hand motorcycle from a two-wheeler agent in Navi Mumbai for Rs 24,000, he said.

After a few days, a pistol to be used for firing was delivered to them in Mumbai by their operator, the official said.

Police had recovered a live round from the spot after the firing incident in the early hours of April 14.

“Considering the make of the round, police suspect a good quality weapon was used,” he said.

Preliminary probe suggested that Pal, who was riding pillion on the motorcycle, opened fire, while Gupta remained in touch with gang members while riding the bike.

After opening fire, they abandoned the bike near Mount Mary Church in Bandra, went to the local railway station and boarded a Borivali-bound local train, the official said.

“They alighted at Santacruz railway station and from Vakola area, they hired a car to go to Surat. From Surat, they travelled to Bhuj in a state transport bus,” he said.

They dumped the firearm used in the crime in a river while heading to Surat.

“Police are trying to establish the identity of the person who provided the duo logistical support and money for their stay in Panvel and also for purchasing the bike and other expenses,” the official said.

Speaking about how the breakthrough was achieved, Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) Lakhmi Gautam said, “With the help of human and technical intelligence, the crime branch team received information that the accused persons were in Gujarat, following which two teams were sent to nab them”.

He said there was a possibility that the accused persons were carrying weapons.

“As the terrain of Bhuj was unknown to our officials, the Bhuj Superintendent of Police was informed about the accused persons,” he said.

A team from the Bhuj crime branch joined Mumbai Police officials around 60 km away from Bhuj.

“After travelling around 40 kilometres farther, the two accused were nabbed by the team. They were brought to Mumbai this morning,” said Lakhmi Gautam.

Another official said the police first traced the original owner of the motorcycle to Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai.

The official said the owner directed them to the agent, who showed the documents submitted for the purchase of the bike.

Based on these documents, which included a rent agreement, police contacted the house owner. The Aadhaar cards revealed the identity of the duo, he added.

Meanwhile, Lakhmi Gautam said there is good coordination among sister agencies as Mumbai Police and their Gujarat counterpart separately claimed credit for the arrest.

Rajasthan Royals Pull Off IPL's Biggest Run Chase To Beat KKR By 2 Wickets

Jos Buttler swung his bat merrily on way to a 60-ball 107 and single-handedly lifted Rajasthan Royals to a sensational two-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders, pulling off the IPL’s biggest run chase on Tuesday. Asked to bat first, Sunil Narine’s 109 off 56 balls powered hosts KKR to a formidable 223/6 in front of a packed Eden Gardens. But Buttler had other ideas as he dragged the Royals, dead an buried at 121/6 in the 13th over, past the target of 224 in the last ball of the game after the visitors needed 46 runs in the last three overs, and 28 in 12 balls. Batting first on a fresh pitch, Narine blazed away to a 49-ball 100 to lead KKR’s charge in this top-of-the-table clash.

Trent Bolt eventually got the better of Narine, but not before the opener had bludgeoned 13 fours and six sixes, displaying supreme confidence and skill against one of the best attacks of the IPL.

It was a one-man show from KKR as Narine batted till the 18th over, first stitching 85 runs with Angkrish Raghuvanshi (30) and then adding 51 runs with Andre Russell (13).

However, Buttler had the last laugh as Narine’s maiden T20 hundred went in vain.

The England white-ball captain, who missed the previous match due to a niggle, anchored the chase with utmost precision, hitting nine fours and six sixes overall.

Wickets kept falling at the other end and RR were reduced to 186/8 in the 18th over over, but Buttler showed little nerves.

Needing 28 from the last two overs, Buttler had to be calculative and he did just that by smashing Harshit Rana for 19 runs while facing all his deliveries.

The destructive Englishman raced to his century by hitting Varun Chakravarthy for a six in the first ball of the final over.

He refused to take any single to guard the tailenders but got the job done in the last ball.

This was the joint highest run chase in the history of IPL. Previously, the Royals had overhauled a 224-run target against Punjab Kings at Sharjah in 2020.

The win consolidated Royals’ position at the top of the standings with 12 points at the halfway stage of the league, four clear of KKR.

The IPL’s most expensive buy Mitchell Starc proved to be rusty again with the ball, giving away 0/50 and in his 18th over, he conceded 18 runs.

Earlier, not only did Narine pierce the field with ease, he also unleashed a relentless attack on R Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Having reached fifty in 29 balls, the Trinidadian took just 20 deliveries to get to his first century, pulling Chahal to the midwicket boundary.

Clad in a crisp white T-shirt, team owner Shah Rukh Khan sent a flying kiss from the stands.

On the field, his West Indies teammate Russell jumped in joy, giving him a bear hug as Narine waved his bat in a muted celebration.

Finally, it took a Boult special to end Narine’s innings as the Kiwi left-arm pacer nailed a perfect yorker that also broke the leg stump, causing some delay in the middle.

With Narine taking the centre stage, the Royals spinners had a poor day. Ashwin gave away four wides and conceded 49 runs from his four overs, while Chahal returned with figures of 1/54 from his full quota.

Later, Rinku Singh’s nine-ball 20 not out with two sixes and one four took the total past 200-mark, as KKR scored 62 runs in the last five overs.

Avesh Khan (2/35) and Boult (1/31) were the pick of the Royals bowlers. Kuldeep Sen (2/46) also picked two.

Riyan Parag dropped a sitter from in-form English opener Phil Salt in the second ball of the match.

The drop did not cost the Royals much as Salt, who scored a match-winning unbeaten 89 against Lucknow Super Giants, got out for 10 thanks to Avesh Khan’s one-handed return catch.

But sloppy fielding at the onset looked to have its impact as Narine and the young Raghuvanshi seized the momentum in the power play.

Raghuvanshi’s exquisite timing was on full display when he slammed Boult for three boundaries in the fifth over.

Narine took charge against Sen with a monstrous six over deep midwicket and followed that up with a boundary in a 16-run over, as KKR made 56 for 1 in the power play.

Narine soon shifted to top gear, smashing Chahal over long-off and in the next over produced an even bigger hit in the same region to race to his half-century in 29 balls.

The duo took KKR to 100/1 at the halfway mark before Raghuvanshi threw his wicket away, mistiming an upper cut. But Narine continued the onslaught to prop up KKR.
