Gaza death toll reaches 32,782: Health Ministry

Gaza: The Health Ministry in Gaza has said that the death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen to 32,782.

During the past 24 hours, the Israeli army killed 77 Palestinians and wounded 108 others, the Ministry on Sunday added in a press statement as quoted by Xinhua news agency report.

This brings the total death toll to 32,782 and injuries to 75,298 since the current Israel-Palestinian conflict broke out on October 7, 2023, according to the Ministry.

Israeli media outlets reported that fighting is continuing in the Shifa Complex area in Gaza City, noting that army forces are waging battles while avoiding harming civilians, patients, and medical staff.

It added that Air Force planes attacked several buildings in the Al-Rimal neighbourhood in Gaza City to foil anti-tank missiles and sniper attempts against Israeli army forces.

It said that dozens of militants were killed during the past 24 hours throughout the Gaza Strip, and the Air Force attacked about 80 targets, including military buildings and other military infrastructure.

Israel has been launching a large-scale offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip to retaliate against a Hamas rampage through the southern Israeli border on October 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and more than 200 were taken hostage.

No new Income Tax changes from April 1, 2024: Finance Ministry-Telangana Today

New Tax Regime (Section 115BAC(1A)) Introduced in Finance Act 2023, Contrasts with Old Regime sans Exemptions

Updated On – 1 April 2024, 09:21 AM

No new Income Tax changes from April 1, 2024: Finance Ministry

New Delhi: The Finance Ministry has clarified that there is no new change in the income tax regime that is coming in from April 1, 2024, as is being reported by some social media platforms.

“It has come to notice that misleading information related to new tax regime is being spread on some social media platforms. It is therefore clarified that: There is no new change which is coming in from April 1, 2024,” the Finance Ministry said on Sunday in a post on X.

The new tax regime under Section 115BAC(1A) was introduced in the Finance Act 2023, as compared to the existing old regime without exemptions.

The new tax regime is applicable for persons other than companies and firms, as a default regime from the Financial Year 2023-24 and the Assessment Year corresponding to this is AY 2024-25, the Finance Ministry said.

Under the new tax regime, the tax rates are significantly lower, though the benefit of various exemptions and deductions (other than standard deduction of Rs 50,000 from salary and Rs 15,000 from family pension) is not available, as in the old regime, the Finance Ministry added.

The new tax regime is the default tax regime, however, taxpayers can choose the tax regime (old or new) that they think is beneficial to them.

Option for opting out from the new tax regime is available till filing of return for the AY 2024-25.

Eligible persons without any business income will have the option to choose the regime for each financial year. Therefore, they can choose the new tax regime in one financial year and the old tax regime in another year and vice-versa, the Finance Ministry said in a statement.

"That Was The Difference": CSK Skipper On Reason Behind Team's Loss To DC

Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad believes that their struggle to put up runs in the initial overs proved to be the difference during their 20-run defeat against Delhi Capitals. After tottering in the powerplay, MS Dhoni went on a rampage and produced some classic vintage hitting in the final over, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Apart from Dhoni’s brilliance, CSK batters struggled to leave their mark in the powerplay. A scintillating spell from Khallel Ahmed set the narrative in favour of DC. While Mukesh Kumar stole the show by picking up wickets in key moments of the game.

Gaikwad opened up about CSK’s initial struggle after the game and said, “I was pretty much happy with the way they (bowlers) came back after the start (powerplay). Restricting them to 191 was a good effort. The pitch was on the better side in the first innings. Second innings there was extra seam movement and spongy bounce. I felt he (Rachin) was missing it by a big margin. We couldn’t get going in the first three overs and that was the difference.”

CSK slowly crawled back into the game, with Ajinkya Rahane and Daryl Mitchell’s 68-run stand. However, Mukesh stood out for DC with his remarkable spell and ensured that CSK remained behind the required rate.

“At the halfway stage it was getable. There was extra seam movement and we couldn’t capitalize and we were always behind. We didn’t get the big over to reduce the run rate,” Gaikwad added.

Coming to the clash, while chasing a herculean total of 192, after tottering in the powerplay, CSK got back into the game with the help of Rahane and Mitchell’s stand.

With 72 runs needed in the final four overs, MS Dhoni went on a rampage and produced some classic vintage hitting in the final over, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

However, his effortless stroke play wasn’t enough to pull a rabbit out of the hat and ensure that CSK remained unbeaten.

Sri Lanka Achieve Humongous Test Feat, Break 48-Year-Old Massive Record

Sri Lanka cricket team made history on Day 2 of the second Test match against Bangladesh on Sunday as they broke a 48-year-old record. Sri Lanka scored 531 runs in their first innings without a single batter scoring a century. This was the highest total posted by any team in the history of Test cricket where none of the batters scored 100 or more. Among the top seven Sri Lanka batters, six slammed half-centuries with Kusal Mendis top-scoring with 93 while Kamindu Mendis was unbeaten on 92. The record previously belonged to India who scored 524/9 declared against New Zealand in Kanpur back in 1976.

Bangladesh were 55-1 in their first innings at stumps on the second day of the second Test after bowling Sri Lanka out for 531 in Chittagong on Sunday.

Opener Zakir Hasan was unbeaten on 28 alongside nightwatchman Taijul Islam on 0 after Lahiru Kumara bowled Mahmudul Hasan Joy for 21.

Sri Lanka made a record 531 runs in their first innings against Bangladesh Sunday, but Kamindu Mendis narrowly missed the feat of a third Test century in consecutive innings.

Sri Lanka’s total,  on the second day of the second Test in Chittagong, was the highest scored in Tests without any batsman scoring a century.

Mendis was 92 not out when last man Asitha Fernando was run out for a duck, leaving him eight short of what would have made him only the fourth Sri Lankan to score three centuries in consecutive innings.

Mendis, who scored 102 and 164 in the first Test, struck Taijul Islam for two sixes in an over to come close to the feat.

But Fernando fell short of his crease in a desperate attempt to change the strike.

Apart from Mendis, who was playing only his third Test, Dhananjaya de Silva (70), Dinesh Chandimal (59), Kusal Mendis (93), Dimuth Karunaratne (86) and Nishan Madhushka (57) also scored a fifty each.

Shakib Al Hasan finished with 3-110 as Sri Lanka made Bangladesh toil for nearly two days after electing to bat first. Sri Lanka resumed the second day with 314-4.

De Silva, like Mendis, who also scored 102 and 108 in the first Test, raised the prospect of scoring 300 on the trot before he was dismissed in the post-lunch session.

Chandimal was the only batsman to be dismissed in the first session, edging Shakib behind the stumps after making 59 runs.

Khaled Ahmed trapped De Silva leg before in the first over after the lunch break.

Khaled could have taken another wicket in his next if Prabath Jayasuriya was not comically dropped by three slip fielders on six.

Mendis was declared caught behind on 35 off Mehidy Hasan Miraz, but the decision was reversed after review.

Shakib hit Jayasuriya plumb in front to end his 65-run seventh wicket stand with Mendis, who was dropped by Hasan Mahmud on 60 at deep square leg.

Sri Lanka won the first Test in Sylhet by 328 runs.

Workers Lift Out 200-Ton Chunk Of Collapsed Baltimore Bridge

Workers Lift Out 200-Ton Chunk Of Collapsed Baltimore Bridge

Shipping in and out of Baltimore, one of the US’ Busiest Ports, has been halted

Workers have lifted out the first, 200-ton chunk of Baltimore’s collapsed bridge, officials said Sunday, as efforts get underway to clear the harbor of the steel structure destroyed by an out-of-control ship.

Demolition crews using blow torches sliced through the upper part of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which crumbled when the Dali cargo vessel lost power and struck it on Tuesday, killing six people.

Authorities hope that removing the bridge — by cutting it into smaller sections and lifting them out — will help rescuers recover all the victims’ bodies as well as reopen the crucial shipping lane.

“The first lift was made last night after the cutting of the top portion of one of the northern sections of the Key Bridge was completed,” said US Coast Guard spokeswoman Kimberly Reaves in a statement.

“The piece removed last night was approximately 200 tons,” she said, adding it would be moved to a barge that, once filled with additional pieces, would be taken to a debris-holding site on land.

As salvage operations continued Sunday, Maryland Governor Wes Moore said that “progress is beginning to happen despite the fact that it’s an incredibly complicated situation.”

He said adverse weather conditions and underwater debris meant divers were unable to assist.

Moore told CNN that a huge crane — the Chesapeake 1,000 that can lift 1,000 pounds — was being used in the salvage operation.

Video footage shared Saturday by the Unified Command — the overall response team that includes the US Coast Guard — showed sparks flying as crews suspended in cages cut through an upper section of bridge.

Moore said the recovery would be a “long road,” adding “but movement is happening.”

The difficult conditions have hampered efforts to recover the bodies of the road workers — all Latino immigrants — who died when the bridge collapsed, with just two of six bodies recovered so far.

Shipping in and out of Baltimore — one of the United States’ busiest ports — has been halted, with the waterway impassable due to the sprawling wreckage.

Moore told MSNBC on Sunday that his priorities were recovering the victims’ bodies before reopening the channel.

“It’s impacting the nation’s economy. It’s the largest port for new cars, heavy trucks, agricultural equipment. It’s impacting people all over the country,” he said.

The ship veered towards the bridge due to power trouble, with the pilot issuing a Mayday call that allowed some road traffic to be stopped just before the collision at 1:30am after which the structure collapsed in seconds.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told “Face the Nation” on CBS that there was no timeline to clear the harbor and reopen the port.

“It takes a lot to make sure that it can be dismantled safely, to make sure that the vessel stays where it is supposed to be and doesn’t swing out into the channel, but it has to be done,” he said.

Ceiling Collapses At Guwahati Airport After Heavy Rain, Flights Diverted

One such video shows water pouring from the ceiling inside the airport.

A portion of the ceiling at the Guwahati airport collapsed on Sunday as sudden rain battered the city. Operations were halted briefly and six flights were diverted after heavy winds wreaked havoc at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.

A video shows a group of passengers waiting outside the airport as a portion of the ceiling suddenly collapses overhead. No injuries were reported, airport sources said, adding that the collapse was caused by an overflowing outlet pipe and heavy winds.

Several videos recorded by fliers inside the airport showing rainwater flooding the premises have gone viral on social media. One such video shows water pouring from the ceiling inside the airport even as workers helplessly try to sweep the floors. The clip also shows containers placed under the ceiling to collect water.

The storm also uprooted trees that blocked an approach road to the airport. “We immediately rushed there and cleared the road. It took us over half-an-hour,”  Chief Airport Officer (CAO) Utpal Baruah told news agency PTI, adding that a portion of the roof also blew away during the storm.

“I am personally monitoring the situation so that passengers do not face any inconvenience. Due to the storm and heavy rain, the visibility dropped drastically and we had to divert six flights,” he said.

IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express flights were diverted to Agartala and Kolkata. “The visibility has improved and normal operations have resumed. Flights have started landing in Guwahati,” he added.

Watch: MS Dhoni's Last-Over Fireworks As CSK Go Down Fighting vs DC

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) icon MS Dhoni rolled back the years with an entertaining cameo during the side’s IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Vizag on Sunday. Dhoni, who batted for the first time this season, smashed an unbeaten 37 off just 16 balls, striking at a rate of over 231, albeit in a losing cause. The former CSK captain hit Anrich Nortje for 20 in the final over, but his side fell as many runs short of DC’s total. Dhoni didn’t bat in CSK’s first two matches, but gave his fans something to rejoice in the third game.

On the very first ball he faced, Dhoni struck Mukesh Kumar for a boundary. He managed to collect another four in the same over, sending the crowd in Visakhapatnam into raptures.

Dhoni then hit Khaleel Ahmed for a six in the next over, before ending the game with two fours and as many maximums in the final over.

Talking about the game, DC defeated CSK by 20 runs to register their first victory in IPL 2024, also handing the defending champions a first loss in the ongoing campaign.

Chasing a 192-run target, CSK were rattled by pacers Khaleel Ahmed (2/21) and Mukesh Kumar (3/21), and ended up at 171 for six.

Ajinkya Rahane (45, 30b), Daryl Mitchell (34, 26b) and MS Dhoni (37 not out, 16b) tried their best but DC bowlers were on the money this night.

Earlier, strong fifties by captain Rishabh Pant and veteran opener David Warner led Delhi Capitals to 191 for five.

Pant (51, 32 balls) and Warner (52, 35 balls) found good support from opener Prithvi Shaw (43, 27 balls).

It was Pant’s first fifty in this IPL.

Pacer Matheesha Pathirana (3/31) was the most successful bowler for CSK.

DC missed the services of left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav because of a niggle.
