Hong Kong Book Lovers Mourn Store Closure After Constant Complaints

Hong Kong:

In a quiet Hong Kong cul-de-sac, hundreds gathered over the weekend to say goodbye to an independent bookstore after weekly government inspections spurred by anonymous complaints forced it to put up the shutters.

Mount Zero said it would close at the end of March after constant complaints to authorities, which had accused it of illegally occupying government land by tiling a pavement in front of the store, with the threat of fines and jail time.

Since Hong Kong imposed a national security law in 2020 the city’s cultural sector has been hit by censorship fears, and the handful of bookstores that remain say they are operating in an environment of increasing pressure.

“Authorities often say Hong Kong will go back to normal… (But) these things will haunt our lives,” said political scientist Ivan Choy, who attended the gathering.

Hong Kong recently enacted a second national security law, which critics fear will further drive pro-democracy sentiments underground and chill cultural and artistic freedoms.

The city’s government has rejected allegations the laws curtail freedom of expression.

But Mount Zero has lived through dramatic political change since its founding six years ago and book lovers mourned that the liberal-minded bookstore had seemingly become a victim of that shift.

Leo, a 20-year-old student who declined to give his last name, said he worried “the categories of books allowed for sale would be restricted”, hurting other independent bookstores.

“These bookstores are spots for book lovers to get together, so it’s a pity to lose it,” he said.

‘Ideas are bulletproof’

Mount Zero often hosted cultural events such as book talks in its outdoor area and gained a devoted following.

Margaret Ng, a barrister and former pro-democracy politician, said the two-storey bookstore had offered like-minded readers a vital place to gather.

“You can see in Mount Zero the aspirations of the young people to express themselves in literature and to form their own community,” she said.

But several independent bookstores in December reported spikes in government inspections, some prompted by anonymous complaints including fire safety and labour regulations.

Announcing its closure last year, Mount Zero said it hoped “the mysterious complainant can take a break” after it received weekly visits from different government departments.

“The time saved can be used to sit down and read a book properly,” it said.

AFP could not independently verify the nature of the complaints.

Some Mount Zero supporters said the government should not quash spaces for bookworms.

“If the government wants more people to stay in Hong Kong, they must think about whether there are still places in this city where we can stay,” said Choy.

Below a mosaic sign that read “Ideas are bulletproof”, sweet green pea soup and barbecue pork were passed around in the bookshop’s final hours.

As night fell, the store’s lights dimmed and readers lamenting its loss said the impact on the local community would not be forgotten.

“What really counts in the case of Mount Zero is not a particular bookshop,” said Ng.

“It’s the spirit, and that spirit is unvanquished.”

Woman Says Zomato Order Caused Stomach Ache And Bloating, Company Responds

The user had ordered Pav Bhaji.

The usage of food delivery applications has increased significantly in recent times. As our lives have become fast-paced, it serves as a convenient option and helps save time. However, there has also been a growing issue regarding the quality of the food received. In the past, there have been several cases of people complaining about finding insects in dishes ordered from restaurants. Now, another such incident has come to light and has sparked concern about the food service industry. Taking to X on Saturday, a user complained about excess oil she found in her order which caused her and her friends to have stomach ache and bloating.

Nikita Toshniwal took to X and wrote, “Guys seriously think before ordering food from online delivery partners and cloud kitchen. It is not at all safe these day. And Zomato is really not concerned with anything. This event encountered us when me and some friends ordered food from Zomato on Friday.”

In another post, she said that the food was “so bad” and “unhealthy”. It had “a thick layer of oil on the top” which made all of them sick. She added, “My friend wrote a mail to zomato. They havent reverted back nor their support system is good. @zomato is least bothered now a days.” Ms Toshniwal also shared pictures of the food order and a screenshot of the mail sent to the food delivery company.

Zomato took note of the same and said that they would investigate the matter. “Can’t begin to express how disappointed we are that you had to go through all this trouble, Nikita. We’re here to rescue. Please allow us some time to investigate the matter and we will get back to you shortly.”

Since being shared, her post has amassed several reactions from social media users.

“When I get such food, i simply throw it, may seem as food wastage but when it’s a matter of health can’t compromise. I chat with zomato, most of the time they refund. I then blacklist that restaurant and never order from there. Simple Give zomato terms & conditions a read,” said a user.

“Next time order from a better place may be? Leaving a bad rating for the restaurant and moving on might be your best bet. Oily food is very common in India, I don’t think Zomato has much role to play here. It’s not like Pav Bhaji is ‘healthy’ food to begin with,” said a person.

“They will refund you the money, that’s the best they can do. Need to be very careful where you are ordering from, given the Cake incident happened in Patiala,” commented a person.

Another wrote, “Lucky you only got oily food. Zomato once sent me non-veg food (I’m vegetarian and it was an all veg order) and their response was more than ridiculous and tone deaf.”

A person said, “Ordered stew from Zomato, went to flush it down right after eating 25%.”

Terrified Woman Records 3 Men Tailing Her Car In Bengaluru, Cops Respond

Police have responded after the video shot by the woman was shared on X

Bengaluru:

Bengaluru police have caught three men after a video of them tailing a car on a scooter, banging on its windows and trying to open its doors circulated on social media. A Twitter user posted the video late last night, tagging top police officers and seeking swift action. In the video, a woman is heard dialling a government helpline as the three men on a scooter follow their vehicle.

The terrified woman, who identified herself as Priyam Singh, is heard saying, “They are following us, they are punching the vehicle.” The men on the scooter are seen making angry gestures at the car’s occupants. They then overtake the car and appear to be blocking its route. The car takes a quick turn and the chase begins again.

“He is abusing us. He is opening the door,” the woman is heard saying.

The post accompanying the video said, “This incident occurred near St. John’s Hospital, Gate No. 5. Three rowdies on a scooter with registration number KA04LK2583 followed our car with registration number KA51MT5653 from the Hosur Road – Koramangala right turn junction to Nagarjuna Restaurant KHB colony 5th Block Koramangala, punching our car window.”

In response, South East Police DCP CK Baba said an FIR had been registered and the three accused arrested. “Thank you for bringing this incident to our attention. We take road safety and incidents of road rage very seriously. This is to inform that immediate action was taken immediately and an FIR has been registered. The accused have been apprehended,” he posted.

“It’s imperative for citizens to report such incidents promptly to the police through 112 for swift response and necessary action. Additionally, let’s all commit to obeying road traffic rules to ensure the safety of everyone on the road#calmdownonroads,” the officer added.

The fresh video comes close on the heels of another road rage incident in Bengaluru, in which an auto-rickshaw operator smashed the window of a car, leaving the driver injured. The car driver has said the auto-rickshaw operator was miffed because he did not let him pass his car and move ahead.

The driver, however, had admitted that he was driving “in a bit of a hurry”. After the video went viral, many on social media criticised the car driver for “reckless driving”, but agreed that violence can’t be the solution.

Poll Body Warns BJP's Dilip Ghosh, Congress Leader Over Derogatory Remarks

Dilip Ghosh and Supriya Shrinate have been warned to remain careful in public utterances.

New Delhi:

The Election Commission on Monday censured BJP leader Dilip Ghosh and Congress’ Supriya Shrinate for derogatory remarks against the dignity of women.

The Commission said it is convinced that they made a low-level personal attack and thus violated the provisions of the Model Code of Conduct.

They have been warned to remain careful in public utterances during the Model Code of Conduct period. Their election-related communications will be specially and additionally monitored by the Commission from Monday onwards.

A copy of the warning notice or censure is also being marked to their respective party chiefs for sensitising their functionaries to be careful while communicating in public domain and refrain from any such derogatory comments and violations of model code guidelines.

A controversial comment was posted on social media platforms from Ms Shrinate’s accounts against Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut, who has been fielded by the BJP as its candidate from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Following a row, Ms Shrinate removed the controversial remarks from all her social accounts, claiming that those were not posted by her but by someone else who had access to her accounts.

Mr Ghosh was captured on video mocking Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s family background. He later apologised for his contentious remarks against the West Bengal Chief Minister.

Excise policy case: Delhi Court sends CM Kejriwal to judicial custody till April 15

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday sent Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to judicial custody till April 15, while the AAP supremo moved an application to have three books — Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana and How Prime Ministers Decide.

He was produced before Special Judge Kaweri Baweja of the Rouse Avenue Court on expiry of his previously extended Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody in connection with the money laundering case related to the alleged excise policy scam.

On March 28, Judge Baweja had extended his ED custody, holding that there were “sufficient reasons”. However, she had allowed him to meet his family members and lawyers.

On Monday, the CM was produced amid heavy security while counsel for both ED and CM Kejriwal made submissions virtually. Senior Advocates Vikram Chaudhary and Ramesh Gupta appeared for him and Additional Solicitor General (ASG) S.V. Raju for the probe agency.

Seeking his judicial custody, ASG Raju said that “we (ED) seek his judicial custody and no more ED remand”.

Alleging the same what it had alleged last time, the ED said: “He (Kejriwal) is non-cooperative and is giving evasive replies.”

The ASG made another similar submission as last time saying that CM Kejriwal isn’t giving password to his phone.

The court was told by ASG that the ED might seek his custody later.

After a brief hearing, the judge sent CM Kejriwal to judicial custody till April 15. The accused has also moved an application to be provided with special diet, medicines, books and religious locket which he is wearing, while being in the custody.

Earlier, the probe agency had sought the Chief Minister’s custody for seven more days. However, after hearing the arguments, the court had extended the AAP supremo’s ED remand by four days till April 1, observing that there appear to be “sufficient reasons” to permit his further custodial interrogation, particularly keeping in view the submissions of the ED.

The probe agency had submitted that he is required to be confronted with the material collected and statements recorded so far in the course of the investigation.

The court had directed the investigation officer to ensure that further interrogation and confrontation, etc., of the accused is done without any delay.

Judge Baweja had allowed CM Kejriwal to meet his family members, including his wife, daughter, PA and advocates.

Moreover, the court had directed the agency to conduct the interrogation at a place with CCTV coverage and for the preservation of the footage. The ED was also asked to provide the requisite medication to CM Kejriwal and get him medically examined in accordance with the law during the period of his custody.

The ED arrested CM Kejriwal on March 21 after questioning him for over two hours at his official residence in Delhi.

The ED has termed CM Kejriwal the “kingpin and the key conspirator” of the alleged excise scam in collusion with other ministers of the Delhi government, AAP leaders, and other persons.

Biden set to lose re-election over his genocidal policy in Gaza: US journalist

US President Joe Biden is set to lose his bid for re-election over his support for Israel’s genocidal policy in Gaza, according to an African American journalist and political analyst.

Abayomi Azikiwe, the editor at the Pan-African News Wire, based in Detroit, the US, made the remarks in an exclusive interview with the Press TV website on Saturday.

He was commenting on a poll that found that a majority of Americans now disapprove of Israel’s genocidal war in the Gaza Strip as the regime has started to lose support from its great benefactor, the United States, a new poll has found.

US-based pollster Gallup says its new survey shows support for Israel’s atrocities in Gaza dropped from 50 percent in November to 36 percent in March.

At least 55 percent of Americans are now against the war, Gallup found.

“More people in the United States have become starkly aware of the brutal nature of the regime in Tel Aviv,” said Azikiwe.

“Since October 7, the Israeli forces have deliberately attempted to destroy an already deeply distressed and oppressed Palestinian people. Gaza was considered the largest open-air prison in the world having been under siege for many years,” he said.

“Now the genocidal intent of Tel Aviv has become obvious to tens of millions of people across the United States,” the journalist said.

“At the same time, the solidarity movement with Palestine in the United States has grown exponentially. People have taken to the streets in mass demonstrations against the genocide,” he stated.

“Many university and college campuses are centers for Palestine solidarity efforts. The issue is being debated widely while US President Joe Biden has been labeled by many as ‘Genocide Joe’ for his refusal to halt arms shipments and impose sanctions against the Zionist regime,” he noted.

Israel launched the war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the usurping entity in retaliation for the regime’s intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

The Israeli aggression has so far killed some 32,623 Palestinians, most of them women and children, and wounded more than 75,092 others.

The Tel Aviv regime has also imposed a “complete siege” on the territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

According to a Washington Post report, published on Friday, the Biden administration has authorized the transfer of billions of dollars in bombs and fighter jets to Israel in recent days amid the regime’s genocidal war against the Palestinians in Gaza.

Pentagon and State Department officials said the new arms packages include more than 1800 bombs, The Washington Post reported.

According to the report, these are 2000-pound devices that can demolish entire city blocks and are rarely used in populated areas. Israel, however, has used them extensively in Gaza.

Last week, the State Department also authorized the transfer of 25 F-35 fighter jets and engines to Israel.

Earlier reports said the US had quietly made more than 100 weapons sales to Israel since the onslaught on Gaza began on October 7.

The arms supplies go against the US call for a ceasefire in Gaza.

“Biden’s approval rating overall has significantly dropped largely due to Washington’s facilitation of the mass killings of Palestinians. Unless the current policy is changed rapidly, Biden could very well lose his bid for re-election,” Azikiwe said.

“In several US states, Democratic Party primary voters have cast ballots as ‘uncommitted’. The votes in the ‘uncommitted’ column are more than enough to bring about a Biden defeat in November. Although the rhetoric of the White House has shifted, the same genocidal policy remains,” the analyst concluded.

CSK Coach Explains MS Dhoni's Batting Approach Against Delhi Capitals

There are not many better than the great Mahendra Singh Dhoni when it comes to game awareness and that reflected in his maiden outing with the bat this IPL season, said Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming. The margin of defeat for CSK’s first loss of the season would have been bigger than 20 runs if it was not for Dhoni’s unbeaten 37 off 16 balls at number eight. Dhoni’s cameo against the Delhi Capitals included a thundering six over extra-cover before he unleashed a one-handed maximum over mid-wicket in the 20th over.

The 42-year-old, who last played for India in 2019, had undergone a knee surgery last year.

“It was beautiful wasn’t it? He has been playing incredibly well pre-season. He is coming back from quite a serious injury. His batting has been superb. it gave us a positive vibe towards the end of a tough day.

“To get within 20 (runs of the target) run rate wise is important and he knows that. The way he played was spectacular,” said the former New Zealand captain at the post match press conference on Sunday.

On the first loss of the season, Fleming added: “The result today is a fair reflection of the team’s play tonight. We were a little bit off tonight, we were slow at start in the first six overs of each innings. We gave away too many runs in the first six when we bowled.

“When we batted, they were very good, created pressure and used the conditions very well. The little cameos from David Warner and Rishabh Pant pushed them to a very good score (191/5).”

Was waiting for a long time to perform: Khaleel

Left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed’s burst with the new ball put CSK on the backfoot from the outset.

“I was waiting for a long time to perform for the team. When I started, I realised I was getting good swing, so I just backed it up and didn’t allow the opposition any chance,” said Ahmed.

“The more you play, the more you understand your game. The same happened with me as I have been playing continuously for six months, I got to understand my game plans, my body and managing to play in small niggles.

“It all came due to the domestic season, it gave me good confidence before coming into the IPL and it’s been a great feeling.”
