Iran urges intl. probe into Israeli war crimes in Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital

The spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry has urged an immediate international probe into Israel’s “horrifying and shocking” war crimes in Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital.

“The scale of destruction, torture, killing and the number of the Palestinian detainees in this hospital are horrifying and shocking,” Nasser Kan’ani said in a post on his X account on Monday.

He made the remarks based on the released images of Al-Shifa hospital after a two-week siege by the Israeli army, the statements made by the field witnesses and video and news reports.

“An international investigation is an urgent necessity,” he emphasized.

The Iranian spokesman asked whether international assemblies and institutions would fulfill their duty.

“Will the well-known self-professed human rights advocates support an international investigation into the aspects of this blatant war crime, or will the selective and discriminatory behavior towards human rights continue?” Kan’ani asked.

In a statement on Monday, the Gaza Health Ministry said Israeli forces have withdrawn tanks and vehicles from Al-Shifa Hospital after a two-week siege of the medical complex.

The ministry said that dozens of bodies, some of them decomposed, had been found at the complex after the Israeli pullout, which also left behind a vast swath of destruction.

It emphasized that Israel retreated from the hospital “after burning down the complex buildings and putting it completely out of service.”

Gaza’s media office announced in a statement that more than 400 Palestinians have lost their lives during the Israeli military’s raid on Al-Shifa hospital during a two-week deadly raid.

The statement added that the fatalities include patients, war-displaced and healthcare staff, noting that hundreds more have been arrested and subjected to torture.

On March 18, heavily armed Israeli forces stormed the hospital using tanks and drones, firing at people inside the complex.

The Israeli military claimed that the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement is using the facility to “conduct and promote terrorist activity.” Later that day, Israel said that “terrorist forces” were firing at Israeli troops.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza said at the time that about 3,000 people were inside the medical complex seeking refuge and that those attempting to leave were being targeted by snipers and fire from helicopters.

"This Story Will Remain With You Always": Ganguly On Pant's 51 vs CSK

Delhi Capitals’ Director of Cricket and former India cricketer Sourav Ganguly opened up on skipper Rishabh Pant’s sparkling 51-run knock against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and said that the wicketkeeper-batter will always remember it. Pant scored 51 runs from 32 balls at a strike rate of 159.38. He slammed 4 fours and 3 overhead boundaries during his time on the crease. This was the wicketkeeper-batter’s first fifty after coming back from injury.

Ganguly took to his official X social media account and said that Pant has played well against the Chennai-based franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

“Well played Rishabh Pant… you will remember this innings for a life time… You have played many brilliant ones and will play even better ones but this story will remain with you always,” Ganguly wrote on X.

Recapping the match, former CSK skipper MS Dhoni (37*) produced some classic vintage hitting in the final over, sending the crowd into a frenzy yet the game was gone much before his final over heroics.

Despite Dhoni going on a scoring spree, the DC bowlers were exceptional while defending 192. Khaleel Ahmed scripted the narrative in favour of DC by dismissing the opening pair of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra for 1 and 2, respectively. Ajinkya Rahane (45) and Daryl Mitchell (34) tried to get things going for CSK with their 68-run stand. But Axar Patel provided the breakthrough by removing Mitchell. Mukesh Kumar swooped in from the other end to remove Rahane and help Delhi clinch their first win of the season.

Nizam Sagar canal embankment breaches; houses inundated in Armoor

Nizamabad: The embankment of the Nizam Sagar Canal breached in Armoor town inundating several areas, including the journalists’ colony situated adjacent to the canal during the wee hours of Monday.

According to reports, following a breach in the canal, water started flowing into the houses of the residents of Journalists’ colony past midnight. A large number of residents vacated their houses and moved to safer places. Several electric poles were uprooted due to heavy flow of water in the town, forcing power officials to switch off power supply in the area.

Locals are blaming the irrigation authorities for the incident. The residents complained that the bund of the main canal lacked maintenance for a long time resulting in a major breach. It is learnt that the irrigation officials released the water without clearing the debris accumulated over several months resulting in the breach of the canal embankment.

The water was meant for drinking and irrigation purposes, but due to the negligence of the irrigation officials the entire water has gone waste, the residents said, demanding officials to clear the water and pay compensation for the losses they occurred due to submergence.

Search For 13 Miners Trapped For 2 Weeks In Russia Called Off

Search For 13 Miners Trapped For 2 Weeks In Russia Called Off

A landslide on 18 March at a gold mine pinned the miners more than 120 metres underground.

Moscow:

Russian emergency workers on Monday ended a rescue operation at a mine in the country’s Far East where 13 workers have been trapped for two weeks, state media reported.

A landslide on 18 March at the Pioneer gold mine in Russia’s Amur region near the Chinese border pinned the miners more than 120 metres (about 400 feet) underground.

Initial search operations showed caverns where they could have been sheltering were flooded, raising fears the 13 had been killed in the landslide.

“On 1 April, a decision was made to terminate the rescue operation at the Pioneer mine,” operator Pokrovsky Mine said in a statement cited by the Interfax news agency.

“The results of drilling showed the areas where the miners could be are filled with rock mass and water. The lives of rescuers and mine workers involved in the operation are at risk of death,” due to the possibility of another collapse, it added.

The gold mine is one of the largest in the world and one of the most productive in Russia.

Officials in Amur have opened an investigation for a suspected breach of safety rules. The managing director was arrested last week, the regional branch of Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said.

Accidents at mines are relatively common in Russia, where lax safety standards and weak enforcement have been blamed for multiple tragedies. In 2021, an accident at a coal mine in Siberia claimed the lives of 40 miners.

Armenia says has no plans to join NATO

“We are already cooperating with NATO, we are taking part in peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan, increasing our presence in Kosovo. This is a format of cooperation. As for plans to join NATO, then no. Today, this matter is not on Armenia’s agenda,” he said in an interview.

“As for the European Union, Armenia is Europe-oriented,” he stated.

“I would like to cite the prime minster’s [Nikol Pashinyan] recent speech at the European Parliament. He said that Armenia is ready to be closer to the European Union as much as the European Union wants to be closer to Armenia,” the top diplomat noted, TASS reported.

P Chidambaram's "Somersault" Jab At S Jaishankar Amid Katchatheevu Row

P Chidambaram hit out at Dr S Jaishankar for his remarks on the Katchatheevu island row

New Delhi:

In a sharp response to Dr S Jaishankar’s remarks on the Katchatheevu island row, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram questioned why the foreign minister is “doing a somersault” on the issue. Mr Chidambaram also said that Dr Jaishankar’s journey from being a “suave liberal foreign service officer” to “a mouthpiece of the RSS-BJP” will be “recorded in the annals of acrobatic sports”.

The counter-strike came after Dr Jaishankar today doubled down on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s charge at the Congress over the island row.

Quoting decades-old discussions in Parliament, the minister said the governments led by Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi were indifferent to the island.

The Katchatheevu island, he said, was a “nusiance” for Nehru. It was during the Indira Gandhi government’s tenure when India gave up fishing rights near the island, he said.

The matter has become a talking point following a media report based on an RTI reply received by Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai. Dr Jaishankar stressed that the matter has not emerged suddenly, saying that it is a “live issue”. He also said that the Congress and the DMK are approaching the matter as if they have responsibility.

The recurrent arrests of Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka is an issue that finds resonance among the people. With the elections near, the BJP wants to play up this matter as it pushes for a better show in the southern state. The Prime Minister has accused the Congress of “callously” giving away the island to Sri Lanka and said the DMK had done nothing to safeguard Tamil Nadu’s interests.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Mr Chidambaram said, “It is true that Fishermen were detained in the last 50 years. Likewise, India has detained many SL fishermen. Every government has negotiated with Sri Lanka and freed our fishermen. This has happened when Mr Jaishankar was a foreign service officer and when he was Foreign Secretary and when he is Foreign Minister.”

“What has changed for Mr Jaishankar to launch a tirade against the Congress and DMK? Were not fishermen detained by Sri Lanka when Mr Vajpayee was PM and BJP was in power and in alliance with different political parties of TN? Were not fishermen detained by Sri Lanka when Mr Modi was in power since 2014?” he added.

The Congress leader said “tit for tat is old” and “tweet for tweet is the new weapon”.

“Will Foreign Minister Mr. Jaishankar please refer to the RTI reply dated 27-1-2015. I believe that Mr Jaishankar was the FM on 27-1-2015. The Reply justified the circumstances under which India acknowledged that a small island belonged to Sri Lanka. Why is the Foreign Minister and his ministry doing a somersault now?” asked Mr Chidambaram, a Tamil Nadu leader and former Home Minister.

He then took a personal swipe at the External Affairs Minister. “How quickly can people change colours. From a suave liberal Foreign Service officer to a smart Foreign Secretary to a mouthpiece of the RSS-BJP, life and times of Mr Jaishankar will be recorded in the annals of acrobatic sports,” he said, referring to the minister, who went from being a diplomat to joining the government.

Mr Chidambaram said the pact between India and Sri Lanka helped Tamil refugees from the island come and settle in India. “Why did Indira Gandhi acknowledge that it belonged to Sri Lanka? Millions of Tamils, as many as 6 lakh Tamils, were suffering in Sri Lanka. They had to come to India as refugees and settle here. As a result of this settlement, 6 lakh Tamils came to India. They have lived in this country for the last 50 years, their families are here. They enjoy freedom,” he said.

The DMK, too, has hit out at the BJP over the issue. DMK’s A Saravanan said the External Affairs Minister has said nothing new. “The question is why the BJP is raking up this issue now. Because they are scared, they know they are going to lose this election and in Tamil Nadu, they are facing a rout. The Prime Minister cannot answer the question, why no flood relief for Tamil Nadu. He is now bringing up false bogeys,” he said.
