IPL 2024: De Kock Fifty, Mayank's Fiery Pace Give LSG 28-Run Win Over RCB

Quinton de Kock’s astute fifty and pace sensation Mayank Yadav’s youthful brilliance fashioned Lucknow Super Giants’ 28-run romp over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their IPL match on Tuesday. Lucknow constructed their 181 for five around Quinton De Kock’s 81 (56b) and Nicholas Pooran’s unbeaten 40 (21b). RCB threatened to miraculously scale 182 briefly through Mahipal Lomror, who produced a forceful 33 off 13 balls. However, Mayank’s scorching three-wicket haul (3/14) was not to be denied as the hosts were bundled out for 153.

But in reality, RCB’s chase never really took off – partly by their own follies and partly by the excellence of Lucknow bowlers.

Lucknow opened the bowling with two spinners – Manimaran Siddharth and Krunal Pandya – and it did surprise Faf du Plessis (19 off 13) and Virat Kohli (22 off 16).

But the introduction of pacer Naveen-ul-Haq saw Kohli upping the ante, smoking him for six over the bowler’s head.

The left-arm spinner Siddharth soon fetched the massive wicket of in-form Kohli as the latter’s attempt to go inside out resulted in a simple catch to Devdutt Padikkal at backward point.

RCB went on a slide from that point losing skipper du Plessis, to a mindless run-out, Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green and found themselves at 58 for four in the eighth over.

This was the period when Mayank cranked up the pace in his three-over spell (3-0-13-2).

Maxwell tried to pull a 151 kmph laser beam from Mayank, but the high pace meant that the Aussie could not time his pull, resulting in a simple catch to Pooran at short mid-wicket.

Green was beaten by Mayank’s raw pace as the delivery straightened a bit after pitching on the good length to rattle his off-stump.

The right-arm quick later added Rajat Patidar (27) to his kitty to reduce RCB to 103 for six, and the home side was sinking fast then.

Earlier, De Kock manifested his exceptional hitting skills with a fifty but Lucknow could not progress beyond a par score.

The left-hander selected the bowlers and positions around the ground to play his shots with precision but the RCB bowlers did not allow other batsmen, except Pooran, a free run.

The Super Giants went off the block quickly, reaching 32 for no loss in three overs and then making it 54 in the Power Play.

Most of the runs came from the blade of De Kock, who took a particular liking for pacer Mohammed Siraj.

The South African slammed him for three sixes – two in succession – spread across two overs – two powerful pulls and a handsome loft over mid-wicket.

KL Rahul, who captained the side after coming in as an impact sub against Punjab Kings in the previous game, started slowly making six runs off his first 10 balls.

But a six off left-arm pacer Yash Dayal gave his innings momentum and later he swept spinner Maxwell for a six.

However, Rahul perished soon as an attempt to pull Maxwell’s good length delivery ended up in the palms of Mayank Dagar inside the circle.

The second substantial alliance in LSG innings followed Devdutt Padikkal’s exit as De Kock and Marcus Stoinis (24, 15b) added 56 runs off 30 balls for the third wicket.

De Kock, who brought his fifty in 36 balls, kept his end going during this alliance as Stoinis hammered a six each off Maxwell and Green as LSG rolled on.

But the blooming partnership ended when Stoinis’ half-hearted swat was pouched by Dagar at point. De Kock departed soon, lofting Reece Topley to Dagar at long-on.

The LSG were 143 for four in 16.3 overs at that stage and needed a few more runs to reach safer shores.

Pooran, who biffed left-armer seamer Topley for three sixes in a row in the 19th over and two more maximums in the final over off Mohammed Siraj, gave them those during his final assault.

World Bank: Israel’s war causes $18.5bn in damage Gaza’s infrastructure

A joint report by the World Bank and the United Nations shows that Israel’s genocidal war against the Palestinians in Gaza has caused damages of around $18.5 billion to the coastal territory’s critical infrastructure.

The report published on Tuesday said the structural damage caused by the Israeli carpet bombing of Gaza has affected every sector of the Palestinian territory’s economy.

The damages are equivalent to 97 percent of the combined GDP of the occupied West Bank and Gaza in 2022.

It has found out that more than half of the territory’s population is on the brink of famine.

The report also said over 70 percent of the Palestinians in Gaza has been displaced due to the ongoing Israeli airstrikes and bombing.

The report, produced with the United Nations and the European Union, found structural damage affected “every sector of the economy,” with more than 70 percent of the estimated costs due to the destruction of housing.

“For several sectors, the rate of damage appears to be leveling off as few assets remain intact,” the Bank said.

An estimated 84 percent of Gaza’s health facilities have been damaged or destroyed.  Three quarters of the population have been displaced by the war. One million people are without homes.

The report found that Gaza’s water and sanitation system had “nearly collapsed,” and was delivering less than 5 percent of its pre-war output.

The report covers only the first four months of the Israeli genocide in Gaza and embodies some aspects of the besieged strip’s humanitarian crisis as well.

The report called for “an increase in humanitarian assistance, food aid and food production; the provision of shelter and rapid, cost-effective, and scalable housing solutions for displaced people; and the resumption of essential services.”

Nearly 33,000 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its one-sided war on the territory in early October.

A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding in Gaza, with unimaginable and unnecessary suffering.

Nearly all the 1.1 million children in Gaza are at imminent risk of famine. Families are struggling to find enough food and water, with children already dying because of malnutrition and disease.

Almost every child who has managed to survive the past four months of war is now in the line of fire in Rafah.

The majority of the displaced population – more than 1.3 million people – are trapped in an area of just 62 square kilometers.

Arrested IIT Student Told Family He Won't Study, Had Other Plans: Father

Arrested IIT Student Told Family He Won't Study, Had Other Plans: Father

Accused Touseef Ali Farouqui will be produced in the court on Wednesday when his police remand ends.

Guwahati:

The father of the arrested IIT-Guwahati student, who had allegedly pledged allegiance to terror group ISIS, on Tuesday said his son had spoken to his family members in Delhi that he would not continue with his studies and had other plans.

The accused Touseef Ali Farouqui, a fourth-year B Tech student of the Bioscience department was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on March 24. He is now in police custody.

”I live in Siwan in Bihar but he was with my wife in Delhi. My son had told her about not continuing with his studies as he had other plans,” the student’s father Asmat Ali Farouqui told reporters outside a court where his son was brought for some formality.

He will be produced in the court on Wednesday when his police remand ends.

”Definitely, there was something which his mother knew about but kept that hidden from the others,” the senior Farouqui said.

His wife who also came to the court did not speak to the media.

The student’s father claimed that the police did not allow him to talk to his son during the day.

His parents had arrived here on Friday and had gone to the police station where he was lodged to meet him the next day.

His father did not say anything about what transpired during the meeting.

The senior Farouqui denied speculations that he is separated with his wife and said he lived in Bihar to look after his agricultural land.

The accused was detained on March 23 at Hajo in Kamrup district and arrested the next day under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and UAPA.

Assam Police’s Special Task Force (STF) Inspector General Parthasarathi Mahanta had earlier said that after interrogating him, police found credible evidence of his links with ISIS and he was arrested.

The student was detained three days after the ISIS India head Haris Farooqi alias Harish Ajmal Farukhi and his associate Anurag Singh alias Rehan were arrested in Dhubri district after they had crossed over from Bangladesh.

STF Additional Superintendent of Police Kalyan Kumar Pathak had told reporters that the student had sent an email, in which he claimed that he was on the way to join ISIS.

A black flag, “apparently similar to that of ISIS”, was found in his hostel room and has been sent for verification to specialised agencies which deal with proscribed outfits.

Delhi High Court Imposes Rs 1 Lakh Fine On Google. Here's Why

Delhi High Court Imposes Rs 1 Lakh Fine On Google. Here's Why

Court noted that Google’s application was dismissed due to a lack of inventive steps. (Representational)

New Delhi:

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday while dismissing its appeal imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on Google for representing wrong facts and for its failure to disclose the information regarding the refusal of the patent by the European Patent Office (EPO).

Justice Prathiba M Singh dismissed the appeal filed by Google against the order of Assistant Controller of Patent and Design rejecting its application.

Google had moved an application for a grant of a patent titled “Managing Instant Messaging Sessions on multiple devices.”

The High Court noted that Google’s application was dismissed due to a lack of inventive steps. However, Google claimed that the application was abandoned before EPO.

“Considering the submission made that the EPO application was abandoned and coupled with the fact that the corresponding EU application for the subject patent comprised of not one but two applications, including a divisional application, and that they both were rejected for lack of inventive step, in the present appeal costs are also liable to be imposed,” Justice Singh said.

It further said, “The Appellant in the present appeal not only presented wrong facts to the Court but also failed to disclose the information regarding the refusal of the EU parent application as also of the divisional application which was filed consequently.”

Google’s application was rejected by the Assistant Controller of Patent and Design for lack of inventive steps.

It had challenged the order before the Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB). The appeal was transferred to the High Court after the abolition of IPAB.

The High Court dismissed the appeal and said, “The Controller is right when he holds that the step contemplated in the subject patent application lacks inventive step and is obvious to a person skilled in the art.”

“The sum and substance of the above discussion is that despite the submissions made on behalf of the Appellant, the subject invention is not entitled to grant of a patent given the lack of inventive step. Thus, the present appeal is not tenable and is liable to be dismissed,” the bench held.

Finally, the locals managed to catch him and handed him over to the police, who registered an FIR based on the video.

Watch: Riyan Parag's 'Orange Cap Moment' With Mother Has Fans In Awe

Following his side’s six-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match, Rajasthan Royals (RR) all-rounder Riyan Parag shared a heartwarming moment with his mother. Parag blitzkrieg left the Mumbai Indians (MI) bamboozled as the Rajasthan Royals (RR) sailed to their third consecutive win in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 with a six-wicket triumph over the five-time champions on Monday at the Wankhede Stadium.

In a video posted by the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of his team, Parag was seen sharing a hug with his mother, after which she lovingly placed Parag’s Orange Cap for most runs on his head.

“No one loves you like your mom does,” tweeted the official handle of RR.

Riyan has had a great turnaround in the IPL 2024. He has been promoted to bat at number four, after years of failing to perform down the order as a finisher. The young all-rounder faced trolling on social media for his performances in previous seasons but has shut them all down with his attacking intent and maturity.

In three matches, Riyan has scored 181 runs at an average of 181.00 and a strike rate of over 160, with two half-centuries. His best score is 84*. He is tied with Indian and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star batter Virat Kohli for most runs in IPL 2024, scoring 181 runs in three matches at an average of 90.50, with a strike rate of over 141. He has scored two half-centuries, with the best score of 83*.

Last IPL season, Parag scored 78 runs in seven innings. In IPL 2022, his numbers were 183 runs in 14 innings. In 2021, he made 93 runs in 10 innings. These numbers look heavily underwhelming when one also looks at his domestic cricket numbers for Assam, where he shows a more all-round side of him as a batter.

In four matches of the Ranji Trophy 2023-24, Parag made 378 runs in six innings at an average of 75.6, with two centuries and a fifty. His best score was 155.

Parag also took Assam to the semifinals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 competition, ending the tournament as the leading run-scorer with 510 runs at an average of 85, with seven half-centuries. He also took 11 wickets.

In the Deodhar Trophy, a 50-over tournament last year, Parag ended as the leading run-getter while playing for East Zone, taking his team to the finals. In five matches and five innings, Parag made 354 runs at an average of 88.50, with a strike rate of over 136. He scored two centuries and a fifty. Most of his scores came in pressure situations and he found himself driving his team out of trouble after losing early wickets or going through a collapse. He earned the ‘Player of the Tournament’ title in the competition.

Coming to the match, after winning the toss, RR opted to bowl first. Trent Boult (3/22) destroyed the MI top-order in the powerplay, reducing them to 20/4. A 56-run partnership between skipper Hardik Pandya (34 in 21 balls, with six fours) and Tilak Varma (32 in 29 balls, with two sixes) brought some order into the innings briefly before MI experienced a collapse again to end at 125/9 in 20 overs.

Yuzvendra Chahal (3/11) and Nandre Burger (2/32) bowled well for RR and rocked the MI batting line-up with regular wickets, never giving them a chance to breathe.

In the run chase, RR lost openers Jos Buttler (13), Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) while skipper Sanju Samson could make only 12 in 10 balls. Reduced to 48/3, they were in a tricky situation. But Riyan Parag once again performed a brilliant rescue act, scoring 54* in 39 balls, with five fours and three sixes to take his side to a six-wicket win with 27 balls left.

Akash Madhwal (3/20) was the pick of the bowlers for MI.

Boult took home the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

Rajasthan is at the top of the points table with three wins in three matches, giving them a total of six points. Mumbai is at the bottom on the other hand, having lost all their three games so far.

Amid Gaza War, Palestinians Relaunch Bid To Become UN Member State

Amid Gaza War, Palestinians Relaunch Bid To Become UN Member State

According to reports, US could use its Security Council veto power to derail the recommendation.

United Nations:

The Palestinians have officially revived their application to become a full member state in the United Nations, according to a letter from their UN envoy dated Tuesday and seen by AFP.

The Palestinians, who have had observer status at the world body since 2012, have lobbied for years to gain full membership, which would amount to recognition of Palestinian statehood.

In a letter to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour requested “upon instructions of the Palestinian leadership” that an application dating back to 2011 be reconsidered this month by the Security Council.

The letter has been transmitted to the council, according to the documents seen by AFP.

Mansour has repeatedly said in recent months that in the face of Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip, in response to the October 7 attack by Hamas, UN membership was a priority for the Palestinians.

Any request to become a UN member-state must first be recommended by the council, then endorsed by a two-thirds majority in the General Assembly.

The 2011 application, launched by Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, never came before the Security Council for a vote, and the General Assembly voted to grant the Palestinians observer status in November 2012.

Observers believe the Palestinian push for membership is unlikely to reach the assembly as the United States, Israel’s closest ally, could use its Security Council veto power to derail the recommendation.

The League of Arab States, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Non-Aligned Movement sent a letter to Guterres on Tuesday, also seen by AFP, supporting the bid by the Palestinians.

“We wish to bring to your attention that, as of this date, 140 Member States have recognized the state of Palestine,” said the joint letter, which included a list of those countries.
