Opinion: Telangana: Congress Is Upbeat, But A Bipolar Fight With BJP Looms

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The Congress party hopes to make significant gains in Telangana, where it formed the government late last year by trouncing the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in state elections late last year. Telangana sends 17 MPs to the Lok Sabha in total. In the 2019 general elections, the BRS won nine out of those 17 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won four, the Congress three and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) one. C-Voter and ETG surveys predict that this time, the Congress may win around nine seats in the state, which votes on May 13.

The Congress scripted a stunning victory last year by bagging 64 of the 119 assembly seats on offer. The BRS won 38 seats, the BJP eight and the AIMIM seven. The party, which chose to bank on local-level anti-incumbency and the traction generated by the announcement of guarantees for all sections of society, went on to bag a 40% vote share against the BRS’s 38% and the BJP-led alliance’s 14%. In the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the state, the Congress thus hopes that its 2023 victory, the implementation of guarantees, the weakening of the BRS and Revanth Reddy’s charismatic leadership will help it perform well in the state yet again.

Why is Congress upbeat about its prospects in Telangana?

1. Implementation Of Guarantees

The Congress government has earmarked Rs 53,196 crore for the implementation of its six poll ‘guarantees’. It has already implemented four of the six, and the remaining will be rolled out in a phased manner. The guarantees include free bus travel for women, Rs. 10 lakh health insurance for the poor, supply of domestic LPG cylinders at ₹500 each and free power supply to households consuming up to 200 units per month.

Reddy, who has managed to create his own pool of beneficiaries, has sought to turn the elections into a battle of perception – about whether the people see the Congress’s delivery better than that of the Centre. Even if there are some issues in implementation, this is a honeymoon period of sorts as voters won’t be averse to giving the benefit of the doubt to a party that’s been in power for just around four months.

2. Rahul and Revanth’s Popularity

With elections turning more and more presidential in style, leadership plays an important role. Rahul Gandhi is more popular in the South compared to other regions. In fact, at one point in Telangana, he was more popular than even Narendra Modi. Today, Reddy is by far the most popular local leader, ahead of BRS’s K. Chandrashekar Rao and any BJP leader. “Until now, you had seen an administrator in me in the last few months after I became the chief minister. From now on, you will all see my performance as PCC (Pradesh Congress Committee) chief,” Revanth said as soon as the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections was announced. He also openly stated that the Lok Sabha polls would be a referendum on his government’s performance. Reddy’s statements indicate that the morale of the Congress cadre is running high.

3. The Weakening of BRS

The BRS’s sorry performance in 2023 exposed its weaknesses. The arrest of KCR’s daughter, K. Kavitha, in an alleged liquor scam in Delhi has tarnished the image of the party. And KCR’s high-handedness, aloofness and inaccessibility have further dented his stature among voters.

The party is already going through a crisis, with five of its nine Lok Sabha MPs and one MLA having quit to join either the Congress or the BJP. The BRS also stares at the possibility of losing several of its 38 MLAs to the Congress or the BJP during or immediately after the Lok Sabha polls. The party leadership is yet to come to terms with the loss of power and is struggling to deal with pent-up discontent among its leaders and cadres.

A Possible Bipolar Contest

In the 2023 assembly elections, the Congress’s improved vote shares in its traditional voting segments – SCs (among which it saw a rise of 13 percentage points over the last time), STs (8 percentage points more) and Muslims (5 percentage points more) – came largely at the expense of the BRS. The Congress this time is hoping to make additional gains in these traditional segments, though the BRS still commands around 34% of the SC-ST and 41% of Muslim support. It also hopes to win over the youth by capitalising on the discontent over the lack of employment, coupled with the party’s promise of 30 lakh jobs. Efforts are being made to woo farmers too through the implementation of schemes like Rythu Bharosa in the coming days.

The exodus of leaders from the BRS and the national character of the polls is also likely to turn the election into a bipolar contest between the Congress and BJP, which is hoping to bag the anti-Congress vote lying with the BRS.

In the 2019 general elections, the BJP bagged 20% votes, almost three times its tally in the 2018 assembly election. In the latest elections, the party won 14% votes and is hoping that the Modi factor will further help it enhance its performance in the Lok Sabha elections.

Any bipolar contest with the Congress gives confidence to the BJP. Of the 190 direct BJP vs INC contests in 2019 across India, the BJP was the winner in a whopping 175. In Telangana, the party is strong in the north and Hyderabad regions but faces challenges in the South and central areas. Unlike in other states in India, the BJP has not been able to crack the OBC code here. The unexpected removal of Sanjay Bandi as the state unit’s chief has dented its popularity in the community. According to news reports, the BJP is aiming to win over 12 out of the total 17 seats and 35% of the total votes in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Whether it manages to do that remains to be seen, but what’s certain is that a better show in Telangana is essential for the BJP to accomplish its ‘Mission 50’ in the South.

The role of the AIMIM is also important, especially in Hyderabad, where polarisation comes into play. The BJP is hoping that the weakening of the BRS will also affect the AIMIM’s prospects as the two have had an unofficial understanding for many elections now.

All in all, a cracker of an election awaits in Telangana.

Mass resignations hit AAP in Gujarat’s Jamnagar ahead of LS elections

Kar Karmur

Jamnagar: Over a dozen Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, including the party’s city Chief Kar Karmur, Deputy Chief Ashi Sojitra, and Ashish Katariya, tendered their resignations in Gujarat’s Jamnagar on Wednesday.

The collective departure of these party members, citing unmet promises by the AAP’s central leadership, has thrown the local unit of the party into disarray.

The resignations came to light through a letter addressed to the AAP’s state chief, Ishudan Gadhvi, in which the disgruntled members voiced their dissatisfaction.

One of the resigning members stated, “For the last three years, I’ve been part of AAP. During the Vidhan Sabha elections, the party made several commitments but failed to honour them. Despite numerous appeals and discussions, the party did not act on previously agreed matters, leading to my resignation along with 15 other office-bearers.”

This internal strife within the AAP contrasts sharply with the political landscape of Jamnagar where the BJP is standing strong.

In 2019, Poonam Hematbhai Maadam of the BJP secured a victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Maadam clinched the seat with 5,91,588 votes, defeating Kandoriya Mulubhai Ranmalbhai of the Congress, who received 3,54,784 votes, thereby marking a substantial victory margin of 2,36,804 votes. This time also, the BJP has fielded Poonam Maadam.

Israel carries out fresh attacks on southern Lebanon

The Israeli regime’s military targeted the towns of Blida and Aainata in its fresh aggression.

Meanwhile, Zionist media outlets reported that two missiles were fired at a settlement in northern Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories.

The Zionist sources also reported the sound of several explosions in occupied lands after a barrage of rockets were fired from southern Lebanon toward occupied Palestine.

The Lebanese Resistance movement Hezbollah has been conducting regular raids since early October against the Israeli regime’s military position in retaliation for the occupying regime’s offensives against Gaza and southern Lebanon.

Israel waged its brutal war on besieged Gaza on October 7 after Hamas carried out an unprecedented operation against the occupying entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Israel has imposed a complete siege on the densely populated territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food, and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

"Even Kohli Can't…": Sehwag Blasts Overhyped RCB Batting After LSG Loss

Royal Challengers Bengaluru had yet another tough night on the field as they faced a 28-run defeat against Lucknow Super Giants at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday. This was RCB’s third defeat in fourth match and they are stuck at the ninth spot on the points table. Asked to bat first, LSG posted a total of 181/5 in 20 overs with Quinton de Kock smashing 81 off 56 balls. Later, the hosts stumbled in the chase and were bundled out for 153. Mahipal Lomror was the only batter in RCB’s line-up who crossed the 30-run mark.

Talking about RCB’s flop show, former India batter Manoj Tiwary stated that the failure of the middle order is making Faf du Plessis and co miss the legendary AB de Villiers.

“They should have chased down this target. I think the absence of AB de Villiers is now hurting them. All-rounder Cameron Green is an emerging player who is doing very well for Australia but has failed to perform for RCB. However, he scored runs in the last match. Rajat Patidar was sent to bat at No 3 and Green, who had performed well in the last match, was not sent. And Glenn Maxwell is also an another flop bet. If you check his IPL stats, he is a great performer. If you are not giving a match-winning performance in all 14 matches, then at least deliver in 7-8 matches,” Tiwary said on Cricbuzz.

Former India batter Virender Sehwag, who was also a part of the discussion, reacted to Tiwary’s statement and said, “7-8? Even Virat Kohli can’t deliver a match-winning performance in 7-8 matches. Every team expects it’s expensive players to play a big innings in at least 2-3 matches. If a player can guide team to victory in 2-3 matches, then it’s a very big achievement.”

“A player needs to give consistent performances likes scoring 100 runs in one game, 80 runs in second, and so on. Taking team to victory in 7-8 matches, this can only be possible in a year and not in IPL. In 17 years of IPL, I have never seen any player playing 7-8 match-winning knocks for his team,” he added.

Talking about the match, LSG were put to bat and managed to post a handsome score of 181/5 following de Kock’s rollicking 81 off 56 deliveries.

In reply, RCB struggled to put up meaningful partnerships which led to their downfall and sealed a 28-run defeat for the hosts.

With two wins in three matches, LSG will face the 2022 champions Gujarat Titans on Sunday while RCB will be squaring off against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday.

China 'will not sit idly by' on tech restrictions

President Joe Biden and Xi Jinping held talks in a telephone call on Tuesday about US trade restrictions on technology and Taiwan.

“If the United States insists on suppressing China’s high-tech development and depriving China of its legitimate right to development, we will not sit idly by,” Xi warned, according to Chinese state media.

Taiwan remains the “first red line not to be crossed,” Xi told Biden and emphasized that Beijing will not tolerate separatist activities by Taiwan’s independence forces as well as “exterior indulgence and support,” which alluded to Washington’s support for the island.

Xi told Biden that the two countries should adhere to the bottom line of “no clash, no confrontation” as one of the principles for this year.

“We should prioritize stability, not provoke troubles, not cross lines but maintain the overall stability of China-US relations,” Xi said.

Iraqi Resistance strikes Israel’s Haifa Airport in support of Gaza

Iraqi resistance forces have targeted Haifa Airport in the northwestern part of the 1948 Israeli-occupied territories in retaliation for the Tel Aviv regime’s war against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of anti-terror fighters, in a brief statement claimed responsibility for the early Wednesday drone strike against the facility.

The coalition said the airport came under attack by armed unmanned aerial vehicles.

It noted that that the attack “falls within the framework of the second phase of operations against the occupying Israeli regime. It was conducted in support of Palestinians in Gaza, and in retaliation for the Zionist entity’s massacres against defenseless Palestinian civilians.”

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq underscored it would continue to “destroy the enemy’s strongholds.”

Separately, the sound of explosions was heard close to Ovda Airbase, an Israeli Air Force (IAF) base located around 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) north of Eilat, Lebanon’s Arabic-language al-Mayadeen television news channel reported.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq has carried out numerous attacks on Israeli targets since the start of a genocidal war on Gaza by the occupying regime in early October.

Israel unleashed its war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas resistance group carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

The Tel Aviv regime has enforced a “total siege” on the territory, severing the supply of fuel, electricity, food, and water to the more than two million Palestinians residing there.

The Israeli war has resulted in the death of 32,916 Palestinian lives and left another 75,494 wounded, painting a grim picture of the situation.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq has also struck major American military bases in Syria and Iraq in retaliation for Washington’s singled out support for the bloody Israeli onslaught against the Gaza Strip, and in a show of strong solidarity with Palestinians.

Kim Jong Un Leads Test Of New Missile That Can Hit US Bases

Kim Jong Un Leads Test Of New Missile That Can Hit US Bases

North Korean state media showed images of Kim near the missile.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test of a new ballistic missile designed to deploy a hypersonic glide vehicle that can deliver a nuclear payload, his state media reported, calling the test “an epoch-making success.”

Kim’s propaganda apparatus on Wednesday lauded the launch of the missile that took place a day earlier, which it said was intermediate-range – meaning it could hit US military bases in the region. It also touted that it’s solid-fuel, meaning it can be quickly deployed and fired.

It still remains to be seen if North Korea has actually developed a functional hypersonic glide vehicle. These weapons are designed to deploy a reentry vehicle for carrying a nuclear warhead that can change its flight path at high speeds, making them hard for interceptors to shoot down.

North Korean state media showed images of Kim near the missile dubbed the Hwasong-16B prior to launch and the rocket flying in the air. Kim “has personally blazed the ceaseless untrodden path to developing and perfecting ultra-modern weapons with his unshakable will and inexhaustible energy,” the official Korean Central News Agency reported.

“This sort of weapon needs to be highly responsive as it’s one of the first weapons you’d employ in a conflict, which is why the DPRK is so excited about it being solid-fueled,” said Decker Eveleth, a graduate research assistant at James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, who referred to North Korea by its formal name.

The missile launched Tuesday flew about 600 kilometers (375 miles), according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, and appeared to be related to a new engine for a hypersonic missile system North Korea tested about a month ago.

North Korea has a habit of provocations timed to coincide with elections in South Korea, and the launch came before a vote for a new parliament on April 10. Kim’s regime has bristled at the government of current conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol, who has taken a hard line on Pyongyang, and the latest launch serves as a reminder of North Korea’s threats to security.

North Korea last tested an intermediate-range ballistic missile in January. A missile of this sort is built to fly far enough to hit all of Japan, where the US has tens of thousands of troops. It can also reach US military facilities in Guam, where the Pentagon says it keeps one of America’s largest munitions depots in the world.
