Six dead, several injured in reactor blast in Sangareddy

Sangareddy: Six persons were killed in a reactor blast in a bulk drug manufacturing unit here on Wednesday. Over 25 persons were said to have been injured, with officials fearing that the death toll could go up.

The blast that ripped through SB Organics Limited at Chandapur village of Hathnoora mandal around 5 pm killed six employees including the firm director Ravi, on the spot, even as the fire triggered by the blast spread fast through the unit.

Sangareddy Collector Valluru Kranthi said about 50 employees were working in the factory at the time of the mishap, with at least 25 to 30 persons of them being injured in what could be one of the biggest industrial accidents in Sangareddy district in recent times.

The condition of eight to 10 persons was stated to be critical. With another reactor being operated very close to the reactor that exploded, Fire and Disaster Response Services personnel were working towards neutralising the second reactor before the fire, said to be chemical in nature, reached it.

The fire was brought under control by 8 pm. The Collector said the injured were shifted to the Government Hospital in Sangareddy. Some of the injured have been shifted to a private hospital as well.

DG of Fire Services Nagi Reddy and District Superintendent of Police Ch Rupesh apart from the Collector are supervising the rescue operation and making efforts to provide support to the victims.

Due to the high intensity of the blast, officials evacuated people living close to the industry to safer places. The Fire Services personnel also ensured that the fire did not spread to nearby factories.

Health Minister Damodara Raja Narasimha, former Minister T Harish Rao, Medak BRS candidate P Venkatrami Reddy and others expressed shock over the industrial mishap.

The worth of the property damaged was yet to be assessed. The Sangareddy police have registered a case and are investigating the cause of the deadly explosion.

'Shows You The Status Of Rohit': Australia Great On IPL Crowd Booing Hardik

Rohit Sharma (L) and Hardik Pandya© X (formerly Twitter)

Former Australian cricket team wicket-keeper batter Adam Gilchrist believes that the reaction of the crowd towards Hardik Pandya during IPL 2024 shows the popularity and support that Rohit Sharma commands among the supporters. Hardik ended Rohit’s ten-year tenure as Mumbai Indians skipper after completing a sensational trade from Gujarat Titans. However, under his leadership, MI have lost all three of their games in IPL 2024 and Hardik was even booed by the crowd during the matches. Gilchrist pointed out that Hardik’s move to MI took place in a ‘mysterious manner’ and the reaction of the fans towards the MI skipper actually shows their ‘tribalism and intensity’.

“It shows you the status that Rohit Sharma has in the game there. The mysterious manner with which it all played out initially, the pace with which it happened, everyone was stunned with Mumbai getting Hardik Pandya away from Gujarat and then Rohit relinquishing captaincy. It’s an odd one. But this is the nature of the beast in the IPL. The tribalism and intensity within fan bases. It’s hard to replicate anywhere else with that level of intensity,” Gilchrist said on Club Prairie Fire podcast.

Gilchrist also recalled an instance where he was booed by Australian fans at home. He succeeded the renowned wicket-keeper Ian Healy in the Australia Test squad back in 1999 and the reaction from the fans was not great when he made his ODI debut.

“I got hammered on to the field. And all the way off. So I know what (Hardik) feels like, I will just get on to Hardik, and I will get him through…I am the boo whisperer, I know how to get inside their minds and just get them through. I will get on to Hardik, I have sent that message to MS, I will keep you posted on that and I will get him on and we can get inside his mind and help him, dig out of the trouble they are in.”

In a press statement, Dobriyal said more staff was mobilized to ensure and security of people in village, besides cordoning off the entire area. Forest staff were conducting tom-tom programmes to create awareness among villagers.

The Revenue department has also been alerted to ensure the villagers do not venture out, he said.

A forest jeep was also chased by the elephant for about 200 metres, but the staff managed to escape unhurt, he said.

US vows to block new attempt by Palestine for full UN membership

The United States has vowed to block a new attempt by the Palestinians for full membership in the United Nations.

Supporters of the Palestinian move asked the UN Security Council on Tuesday to revive an application for admission submitted in 2011.

But Robert Wood, the US deputy ambassador to the UN, was again almost certain to block the request. “Our position has not changed,” Wood told several reporters.

Wood said the issue of a full Palestinian membership is one of the final status issues to be decided in bilateral talks between the Palestinians and Israel.

At least 140 countries have recognized a Palestinian state. They include members of the 22-nation Arab Group at the United Nations, the 57-nation Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the 120-member Nonaligned Movement.

Malta’s UN Ambassador Vanessa Frazier, who is the current president of the Security Council, said the Council’s standing committee for new members, which includes all the 15 members, is expected to meet behind closed doors to consider the application.

The monthly Security Council meeting on April 18 will also consider the issue of Palestine’s full membership.

After the initial bid for full UN membership was rejected in 2011, the Palestinians went to the 193-member UN General Assembly, where there are no vetoes. They succeeded by more than a two-thirds majority in having their status raised from a UN observer to a non-member observer state in November 2012.

That change opened the door for the Palestinian territories to join the UN and other international organizations, including the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Riyad Mansour, the permanent observer of Palestine to the United Nations, has repeatedly said in recent months that in the face of Israel’s brutal campaign of death and destruction in the besieged Gaza Strip, UN membership is a priority for the Palestinians.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long ruled out Palestinian statehood.

"Like A Mountain Collapsed": Taiwan Shook By Biggest Quake In 25 Years

'Like A Mountain Collapsed': Taiwan Shook By Biggest Quake In 25 Years

The quake was felt across Taiwan, with over 100 aftershocks unnerving the island of around 23 million.

Liu watched intently as rescuers carefully picked their way through the remains of a warehouse that crumbled like a house of cards Wednesday during Taiwan’s strongest earthquake in 25 years, telling AFP it “was like a mountain collapsed”.

Propping ladders against the debris, the rescue workers managed to pluck 50 survivors from the destroyed building in Liu’s New Taipei City, just outside the capital.

The building was about 60 years old and had housed a printing press, said Liu, who lived next door.

The 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck at around 8:00 am local time (0000 GMT), reduced the building to jagged concrete blocks, steel bars, bricks and tangled wiring.

Residents of nearby buildings appeared to be unaffected, though they felt the intense shaking from the morning quake.

“Many of the decorations at home fell on the floor, but people were safe,” said Chang, who lives near the printing press. “We were very lucky.”

The quake was felt across Taiwan, with more than 100 aftershocks unnerving the island of around 23 million.

Its epicentre was in eastern Hualien county, a mountainous region known for its picturesque trails and seascape views.

At least nine people died in the quake — all in Hualien — with three killed on a hiking trail and two crushed in their vehicles by boulders from landslides.

More than 800 were injured across Taiwan.

Images filmed by a train passenger and obtained by AFP’s verification team showed a landslide near one Hualien trail, sending up a cloud of white dust across its mountain ridges.

A driver shot a video of another landslide spilling onto a road near the region’s famed Taroko National Park, with cars emerging from a cloud of sand and dust.

Some buildings around Hualien were left tilting dangerously, with military personnel climbing into the structures using ladders.

A group of firefighters used a cherry picker to reach a window and hand tools to workers inside.

On the island’s western coast in Taichung — Taiwan’s second-largest city — a road was cut off by a landslide, with massive boulders falling from a mountain ridge and blocking off traffic.

The shallow quake — the United States Geological Survey put it at about 34.8 kilometres deep — was “felt all over Taiwan”, said Wu Chien-fu, director of Taipei’s Central Weather Administration’s Seismology Center.

“It’s the strongest in 25 years since the (1999) earthquake,” he said, adding that authorities were not ruling out subsequent tremors in the next three days.

The 1999 earthquake hit central Taiwan, killing around 2,400 people in the deadliest natural disaster in the island’s history.

Taiwan’s defence ministry said it had deployed cargo planes to take dozens of rescuers to Hualien, where people were reportedly trapped in tunnels that carve through the mountains.

‘Really scared’

Taiwan is accustomed to earthquakes as the island lies near the junction of two tectonic plates.

Buildings in major cities are made to withstand strong tremors, and while there are high-rises in the capital Taipei, people tend to prefer to live in structures less than 10 storeys high.

In New Taipei City, Mayor Hou Yu-ih surveyed the scene of the printing press collapse with rescue workers, and reassured reporters that all 57 people in the building had made it out — with just one injured.

Chang, who lived nearby, said the 1999 quake was the worst she had ever experienced.

“Most people were asleep (when it happened) but I was not so I clearly felt it — it was very serious, far more serious than this time,” she said.

But one woman in Hualien said she was “really scared” because Wednesday’s quake lasted a long time.

“I am used to earthquakes but this is the first time I was so scared that my hands kept shaking,” she said in a Facebook post.

Madhapur Police arrests three for car rental fraud, seize vehicles worth Rs 1 crore

Hyderabad: The Madhapur police on Wednesday arrested three persons who had allegedly duped car owners after taking their vehicles on rent. Five cars and jeeps valued at Rs. 1 crore were seized from them.

The arrested persons Madella Abhishek (24), E Komaleshwar (24) and Eluri Prem Kumar (23) of Ramagundam along with one Harish teamed up and allegedly duped the vehicle owners.

“Harish booked cars through online mode for self-drive and sent the other three suspects to take the car. Afterwards, the four persons sell the car to some people saying it belonged to them and that they will hand over the documents later,” Madhapur police said.

The gang sold the cars for a price between Rs. 4 lakh and Rs. 5 lakh.

On a complaint the police registered a case and arrested them. Efforts are on to nab Harish who is absconding.

UN Human Rights Council mulls imposing arms embargo against Israel

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will look into a draft resolution for imposing an arms embargo against Israel.

The draft was brought forward by Pakistan on behalf of 55 of the 56 member states in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). It will be considered on Friday on the grounds that there is a “plausible risk of genocide in Gaza.”

The eight-page draft is co-sponsored by Bolivia, Cuba and the Palestinian mission in Geneva. It condemns “the use of explosive weapons with wide-area effects by Israel” in populated areas of the besieged Gaza Strip. It also demands that Israel “uphold its legal responsibility to prevent genocide.”

The draft resolution’s possible adoption would make it the first time the UN’s top rights body has taken a position regarding Gaza since early October.

The draft calls on Israel to end occupation of the Palestinian territory, and immediately lift its “illegal blockade” and all other forms of “collective punishment.”

For a resolution to be adopted with an outright majority, 24 votes are needed. However, resolutions can pass with fewer votes due to abstentions.

Israel has killed more than 32,900 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured nearly 75,500 others in Gaza since October 7. It has also cut off fuel, electricity, food and water to the Palestinians living there.

According to the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, the Israeli military has so far killed more than 14,400 children in Gaza, meaning children make up more than one-third of the people Israel has killed in the territory.

Israel is deliberately starving the people in Gaza by destroying food supplies and severely restricting the flow of food, medicines and other humanitarian goods.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri), the United States still remains Israel’s great benefactor, accounting for nearly 70 percent of its weapons imports between 2013 and 2022.

Narine Lights Up IPL With Explosive 21-ball 50. Internet Thanks Gambhir

Sunil Narine produced a stunning display of batting to slam a half-century in just 21 deliveries for Kolkata Knight Riders during their IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday. The all-rounder, who was once again sent to open the batting with Phil Salt, looked in sublime touch as he completely dismantled the DC bowling attack. Narine’s best over came against Ishant Sharma where he ended up scoring 26 runs with a barrage of boundaries as KKR scored 88 runs in the powerplay.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bat.

DC and KKR are locking horns against each other in the 16th encounter of the IPL 2024. The Kolkata-based franchise are currently second in the points table with four points from two matches. Capitals are placed seventh with just two points from three matches.

Both teams are entering the game after winning their last games against their opponents. DC defeated five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 20 runs on March 31 and Knight Riders defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by seven wickets on March 29.

“We’ll bat first. The wicket looks like a belter, no drastic change in the wicket when compared to the last game. It’s been quite a journey…Anything can happen on a given day, it’s important to stick to the process. We’ve Sunil (Narine) coming in and going after the bowlers in the first 6 overs, so his role is very clear and the rest know what’s expected of them. One change – Angrish Raghuvanshi comes in,” Iyer said after winning the toss.

DC skipper Rishabh Pant asserted that they would have batted as well as the wicket can get slower.

“We would have batted first as well, could get a bit slower. It was nice to be back with the group, but I’m not thinking too far ahead. The bowlers did a great job, the fast bowlers, and we’d like them to do it once again. Not thinking about the team combination for the first two games, but we’ve had people working hard in the nets. We just need to keep doing the right things – one change, Mukesh is injured and he’s replaced by Sumit,” Pant stated at the time of the toss.
