Raeisi hails Iran-Iraq ‘shared stance’ against Israel

The combo shows Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi (R), and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi has hailed the shared stance adopted by Iran and Iraq against the occupying Israeli regime in support of Palestinians, calling it a manifestation of solidarity between the two neighboring countries.

Raeisi made the remarks in a phone conversation with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Wednesday, emphasizing the need for all Islamic countries to adopt the same stance.

He further noted that Iran attaches special importance to bilateral and regional relations and cooperation with Iraq, expressing hope that with the resolve and determination of the high-ranking officials of the two neighboring countries, relations between Tehran and Baghdad will be strengthened and developed more than before.

The Iranian president further vowed that the Israeli regime will pay a “heavy price” for its criminal act of attacking the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital.

He also thanked the Iraqi government for its sympathy with the Iranian government and nation over the terrorist attack.

On Monday, Israeli warplanes bombed the Iranian consulate in Damascus, located next to the embassy building.

The attack killed two senior Iranian military personnel who were on an advisory mission to Syria as well as five of their accompanying officers.

Sudani, for his part, denounced the Israeli aggression as a criminal act, saying it is the result of the constant failures of the occupying regime in the battle against resistance in the region.

“We are confident that with the … guidelines of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Islamic resistance will gain a decisive final victory,” he added, according to a statement by the Iranian presidential office.

Sudani further expressed gratitude for the unwavering and continued support of Iran for efforts to establish lasting peace and stability in Iraq, emphasizing his country’s interest in strengthening Tehran-Baghdad strategic relations and cooperation.

The commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)’s Ground Force says the security situation is back to normal in Iran’s southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan Province, adding that an operation is underway to completely purge terrorists from the areas targeted by them.

Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour made the remarks on Thursday after the so-called Jaish ul-Adl terror outfit conducted simultaneous attacks against an IRGC headquarters, as well as a marine police and a police station in Rask and Chabahar Counties.

“The terrorist elements were all equipped with suicide vests. The clashes in Rask ended …; The operation is going on to purge the area [of terrorists] and the number of terrorists killed may increase,” he said.

“Currently, the security situation in Chabahar and Rask is normal and there is no problem there.”

Pakpour added that five security forces were killed in the attacks, including three policemen and two IRGC members.

He also said that 15 terrorists were slain in the clashes and that the toll may increase to 18.

The people taken hostage by the terrorists were freed by security forces, the IRGC commander went on to say.

Sistan and Baluchestan, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, has witnessed several terror attacks targeting both civilians and security forces in the past years.

Iran’s security forces have protected the border and managed to repel almost all assaults by foreign-backed terrorists.

President Droupadi Murmu unveils 1st ‘India-made’ affordable gene therapy for cancer

New Delhi: In a ray of hope for millions suffering from cancer, President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday unveiled the country’s first indigenously-made and affordable gene therapy for the deadly disease.

Launching the gene therapy treatment called “CAR-T cell therapy” at IIT Bombay, President Murmu said that it will be successful in giving new lives to countless patients.

This cell therapy has been available in developed nations for some time but is extremely costly and beyond the reach of most patients globally, including in India.

President Murmu said it is an example of the ‘Make in India’ initiative which is a shining example of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.

The ‘CAR-T cell therapy’ has been developed via collaboration between the IIT Bombay and Tata Memorial Hospital, in association with industry partner ImmunoACT, which is “a praiseworthy example of academia-industry partnership.”

President Murmu said that with the knowledge base and skills of the faculty and students of IIT Bombay and other similar institutions, India “would benefit greatly from the technological revolution underway.”

CAR-T cell therapy or chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy is a form of immunotherapy and gene therapy. It requires complex genetic engineering to modify the patient’s immune cells, especially T cells, and make them fight cancer.

“The development of this therapy in India over the past decade and its approval in October 2023 speaks volumes about the skills of Indian scientists and physicians,” said President Murmu.

Cancer has claimed a large number of lives around the world. In India, 14.6 lakh people succumbed to it in 2022, and the number is likely to rise to 15.7 lakh by 2025.

“The therapy being launched today is a major step — in fact, a new milestone in the journey of healthcare innovation in India. It puts us on the global map of advanced medical care as well as on the elite list of countries, which have access to this most innovative technology platform,” President Murmu emphasised.

Class X SSC exam students to be awarded extra marks for attempting Biology question

Hyderabad: Class X students who appeared for the recently concluded SSC Public Examinations have a reason to cheer. Students who attempted the sixth question in part-II Biology Science paper, as part of the Science examination will be awarded two add-on marks, School Education department on Wednesday said.

The move comes as the sixth question in section– II of the question paper comprising of three short answer questions with four marks each, deviated from the question paper blueprint. The add-on two marks are not grace marks and will be awarded only to those who had attempted and not to all students.

The question pertains to the Coleoptile experiment where students were asked to observe a diagram and answer subset of four questions carrying one mark each. Among four subset questions, the first and second question did not meet the stipulated academic standards.

“The questions are not wrong but they deviated from the question paper blueprint. The same issue has been raised by subject teachers during the video conference. After discussions with the subject experts, it has been decided to award two marks i.e., one each mark for two questions to those students who attempted them,” a senior official told ‘Telangana Today’.

Similarly, the DGE decided to give marks to the fifth question for which there were two correct answers. “Students will be given marks if they write any one of the two correct answers,” the official added.

The results of the Class X exams are expected to be announced on May 2 or 3.

Watch: SRK Turns Cheerleader For Narine, Applauds Explosive IPL Knock

Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan turned cheerleader as he applauded Sunil Narine‘s sensational 39-ball-85 that was instrumental in clinching the victory for his side during the IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday. Narine provided the perfect start to the innings for KKR and along with youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi, he stitched together a 104-run partnership that took the total to a mammoth 272/7 in 20 overs. KKR owner and Bollywood superstar SRK was in attendance and he was caught on camera applauding the explosive effort from the veteran all-rounder.

A dominant Kolkata Knight Riders produced a brilliant bowling effort after their batters’ sensational display of power-hitting as they thrashed a lacklustre Delhi Capitals by 106 runs and moved to the top of the IPL table.

Sunil Narine showcased his batting prowess with a blistering 85 while teenager Angkrish Raghuvanshi (54 off 27) impressed with a fluent fifty on his IPL batting debut as KKR posted an imposing 272/7, five runs short of the highest total in the tournament’s history.

The Capitals never looked like they were in the game be it with the ball or the bat. They crumbled under the pressure of the mammoth total.

Skipper Rishabh Pant (55) scored his second consecutive half century while Tristan Stubbs (54) too hit a fifty but it was in a lost cause as DC folded for 166 in 17.2 overs to suffer their third loss of the season.

Continuing his explosive run, Narine punished all Delhi bowlers alike, sending the ball over the boundary rope seven times. He also hit seven fours in his 39-ball stay. The Capitals were guilty of dropping him on 53 and Narine made his opponents suffer as he notched his highest-ever score in T20 cricket.

Raghuvanshi (54 off 27 balls), who didn’t get to bat in his first IPL match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, also fired on all cylinders, complementing Narine as the pair shared an explosive 104-run stand off 48 balls.

With Andre Russell (41 off 19 balls) and Rinku Singh (26 off 8 balls) also getting the big hits, batting looked like a child’s play for KKR.

With the ball, pacer Vaibhav Arora and KKR’s record buy Australian fast bowler Mitchel Starc deflated the chase in the powerplay itself, as they got rid of Delhi’s top four of Prithvi Shaw (10), Mitchell Marsh (0), Abhishek Porel (0) and David Warner (18).

Pant and Stubbs stitched a 93-run partnership, and even though they managed to score quickly, the required run rate jumped to over 20 runs per over and there was only one result possible.

Earlier, Delhi bowlers produced a forgettable performance as they conceded the highest total in the team’s history. KKR hit as many as 18 sixes and 28 fours.

Iran calls on intl. community to fully support Palestinians on Quds Day

Iran has called on the international community, particularly Muslim countries, to fully support the oppressed Palestinian people on International Quds Day, urging them to confront the “cancerous tumor” of Israel in the region.

In a statement released on the eve of International Quds Day, Iran’s Foreign Ministry “vehemently condemned the Zionist regime’s blatant violation of international law and regulations, human rights, and international humanitarian law” in the war-torn Gaza Strip since October 7.

“The Government and the noble people of the Islamic Republic of Iran once again remind the international community and world governments, especially of Muslim countries, of their responsibility to provide all-out support for the oppressed Palestinian people, particularly the besieged inhabitants and war-stricken people of the Gaza Strip,” it added.

International Quds Day was designated by Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic. It is marked annually across the world on the last Friday of the holy fasting month of Ramadan. This year, the event falls on April 5.

The ministry further called for “effective, decisive, and immediate action by governments and international legal and human rights institutions to stop these crimes and to lodge a criminal case for prosecuting and trying the commanders, perpetrators, and supporters of such human tragedies.”

International Quds Day in the current year comes amid the ongoing brutal war against inhabitants of the Gaza Strip. Since October 7 last year, Israel has killed more than 32,900 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured nearly 75,500 others in Gaza since October 7.

According to the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, the Israeli military has so far killed more than 14,400 children in Gaza, meaning children make up more than one-third of the people Israel has killed in the territory.

“Hundreds of millions of justice-seeking and conscientious people” across the globe, and even in the Western cities, “will raise louder than ever before the cry of innocence and courage and anti-oppressiveness of the heroic Palestinian nation and the truth and reality of what is transpiring in the Palestinian territory on this year’s International Quds Day as they demand the liberation of Palestine from the yoke of oppression, tyranny, occupation, and genocide, not only as the ‘first issue’ of the World of Islam, but as the issue of the world of humanity and the most flagrant example of gross violation of human rights and international laws and regulations,” the statement further said.

Israel has cut off fuel, electricity, food and water to the Palestinians living in the coastal territory. It is also deliberately starving the people in Gaza by destroying food supplies and severely restricting the flow of food, medicines and other humanitarian goods.

Last year, tens of thousands of Iranians took part in the annual International Quds Day rallies in the capital, Tehran, in a major show of support for Palestine. Similar marches and events happened in more than 900 cities and villages nationwide, according to officials.

On the eve of this International Quds Day, Iran’s foreign ministry “emphasizes the continuation of the principled and constant policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in supporting the liberation struggles and legitimate resistance of the Palestinian nation and the necessity of effective, comprehensive, and deterrent counteraction against the crimes of the occupying and child-killing Zionist regime.”

It also “calls on all Muslim governments and nations and the freedom- and truth-seekers of the world to stand in unity and solidarity so as to confront this ‘cancerous tumor’ and disruptor of regional and international stability and security and to provide real and practical aid and support to the oppressed Palestinian people.”

In conclusion, the ministry called on the international and human rights organizations and institutions to keep in mind their legal duties in supporting the rights of the oppressed Palestinian people “in ending the occupation, stopping the brutal crimes of the Zionists in the Holy al-Quds and other occupied regions in Palestine, and in putting an end to the aggressive and escalating actions of the Zionists in the region.”

Tokyo Crowds Revel As Cherry Blossoms Reach Full Bloom

Tokyo Crowds Revel As Cherry Blossoms Reach Full Bloom

Sakura season traditionally accompanies the beginning of the new fiscal year in Japan.

Tokyo, Japan:

Tourists and residents packed Tokyo’s top cherry blossom spots on Thursday to enjoy the full bloom that has arrived in the Japanese capital later than usual this year because of cold weather.

The elegant dark branches bursting with pink and white flowers — known as sakura in Japanese — spilled over the moat of the Imperial Palace, where people gathered to snap photos or simply take in the view.

“Cherry blossoms are so symbolic and make everything around you feel joyful and beautiful,” Michitaka Saito, 68, told AFP.

“It makes me feel that I’ve made a good start on the year ahead,” said Saito, who makes an annual visit to Chidorigafuchi Park beside the moat in central Tokyo.

Sakura season traditionally accompanies the beginning of the new fiscal year in Japan, representing fresh starts but also the fleeting impermanence of life.

Eiko Hirose, 76, said that enjoying the cherry blossoms with her husband Sadao “means I’m healthy, and he’s good, and we all have a good time”.

“We take it for granted that we can see it next year again, but who knows? Something may happen,” she said.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) declared on Thursday that the country’s most common and popular “somei yoshino” variety of cherry tree was in full bloom, four days later than average for the city.

While the agency attributes this year’s tardy blooms to cold weather, it has raised the alarm that climate change is making the delicate petals appear sooner in the long term.

Last year’s sakura began to flower on March 14 — the joint earliest date on record along with 2020 and 2021 — and hit full bloom on March 22.

“Since 1953, the average start date for cherry blossoms to bloom in Japan has been becoming earlier at the rate of approximately 1.2 days per 10 years,” the JMA says.

“The long-term increase in temperature is thought to be a factor” as well as other reasons such as the urban heat island effect, according to the agency.

Tourism to Japan has been booming since pandemic-era border restrictions were lifted, and an international crowd was also out enjoying the scenery on Thursday.

Kamilla Kielbowska, a 35-year-old from New York, planned her third trip to Japan around the blossoms.

“We arrived here on, I believe, March 23. And I was joking… ‘OK, we gotta go to this park straight from the airport, I cannot miss sakura.'”

But “it was super cold, and no trees were blossoming. And I was a little bit sad, but hoping that I’ll still see them in full blossom before I leave.”

“It definitely lived up to expectations,” she said, calling the sight “marvellous” and “very magical”.

Katsuhiro Miyamoto, professor emeritus at Kansai University, estimates the economic impact of cherry blossom season in Japan, from travel to parties held under the flowers, at 1.1 trillion yen ($7.3 billion) this year, up from 616 billion yen in 2023.

Congress Has "5 Centres Of Power", Sacked Leader Sanjay Nirupam Alleges

Congress Has '5 Centres Of Power', Sacked Leader Sanjay Nirupam Alleges

Sanjay Nirupam has been expelled from the Congress party.

Mumbai:

A day after being expelled by the party, former Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam, who claimed that he had already tendered his resignation letter to the party president, hit out at his former party, saying that it has five centres of power.

“Congress party is a completely scattered party. The leaders of the party have earlier said that its ideology is directionless but now they are scattered in terms of their organisation,” Mr Nirupam said.

Explaining the organisational structure of the Congress, Mr Nirupam said, “Earlier there was one centre of power within the Congress and there was a coterie and all the other leaders used to fight against them. Currently, you will be surprised to know that the Congress party has five power centres.”

Revealing each of the centres of power, Mr Nirupam said that all five have their own different caucus and lobby which fights among each other.

“The five different power centres have their individual caucus, their lobbies which clash with one another. In the middle of this, lakhs of workers like me find themselves stuck. In these five centres, first is Sonia Gandhi, second is Rahul Gandhi, third is his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, fourth is president Mallikarjun Kharge. The people around him are those who have no political ideology and have suddenly become the high command by tying up with Kharge. The last power centre is Congress General Secretary Organisation KC Venugopal.”

“Those who were meritorious are in a poor state and is deteriorating. I was observing this for a couple of years but then I lost my patience,” he added.

The former Rajya Sabha MP also took a dig at his former party saying that they have ultimately wasted an A-4 size paper.

“At around 10:40 pm yesterday I had sent my resignation letter to Mallikarjun Kharge. I think right after that they got provoked by my expression in the resignation letter. They might have thought that it would be too much if they do not react and then they made such a decision (to expel him from the party). Hence, they (Congress) have finally wasted an A-4 size paper,” Mr Nirupam said speaking at a press conference on Thursday.

Explaining what led to him tendering his resignation, the former Congress leader said, “When I got to know that they are in the mood to take action I asked them not to waste their stationery and I will make an announcement today.”

The senior leader was expelled from the Congress for “indiscipline” and “anti-party statements,” Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said in a statement on Wednesday night.

“Taking note of the complaints of indiscipline and anti-party statements, the Hon’ble Congress President has approved the expulsion of Shri Sanjay Nirupam from the party for six years with immediate effect,” Mr Venugopal said.

Mr Nirupam was removed from the list of star campaigners for the Congress party in Lok Sabha general elections 2024 earlier in the day.

The action was taken for his recent remarks against INDIA block partner, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) amid seat sharing talks for the Lok Sabha election.

Shiv Sena (UBT) declared its candidate Amol Kirtikar will contest from Mumbai North West, a seat that Sanjay Nirupam was keen to contest from.

Iran FM EU’s Borrell hold phone call over Syria attack

The Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and the European Union Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell have held a telephone conversation, the Iranian foreign ministry’s English website reported.

In this telephone conversation, Amir-Abdollahian referred to the terrorist attack by the Zionist regime on the consular section of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Damascus, which martyred 7 Iranian military advisers and a number of civilians and wounded some Syrian citizens.

He said European authorities always invite the Islamic Republic of Iran to exercise restraint while the Israeli regime, in violation of international law, has attacked a diplomatic site that enjoys complete immunity in line with the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Amir-Abdollahian added it should be noted that in addition to the martyrdom of seven Iranian nationals who were on a diplomatic and military advisory mission to fight terrorism and of six Syrian citizens, including a mother and child, regional peace and security and, at the same time, the security of diplomats and diplomatic sites have been completely violated by the Israeli regime through this terrorist act.

The top Iranian diplomat said unfortunately, the genocide and war crimes by the Israeli regime continue in Gaza with the US continuously supporting it.

He said naturally, if the US does not have a serious will to control and stop supporting the war crimes of the Israeli regime, Washington is directly responsible for the spillover of the tensions across the wider region.

Amir-Abdollahian went on to say Iran expects the EU to strongly condemn such crimes by the Israeli regime in a realistic and immediate move.

Just imagine if something like this had happened in the Ukraine war theater against the building of a western embassy… what would have been the European Union’s reaction like?”, Amir-Abdollahian noted.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell pointed out that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack on the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, saying that the EU also believes that Israel’s latest action is at odds with efforts to de-escalate the tensions in the region.

Borrell further noted that he will share the serious concerns of the Islamic Republic of Iran with other EU members. He called for Iran to keep exercising restraint.

The EU foreign policy chief highlighted the developments in Gaza and said unfortunately, the EU’s efforts to stop the war in Gaza have not been successful so far, but “we will continue our efforts to that end.”
