Delhi Man Killed By Ex-Employer Over Extramarital Affair, Money Dispute

Delhi Man Killed By Ex-Employer Over Extramarital Affair, Money Dispute

Hashib Khan and his wife Shabina Begum have been arrested.

New Delhi:

A dispute over money with his former colleague and an alleged extramarital affair with his wife led to a 22-year-old restaurant employee’s murder in Delhi, police said on Friday.

Sachin Kumar, who worked as a waiter at a popular eatery in Connaught Place, was stabbed to death by Hashib Khan after he forced his wife to call him home, they said.

Khan, 31, who ran a T-shirt manufacturing unit in south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar, and his wife Shabina Begum have been arrested.

Kumar went missing last Sunday from Connaught Place after which the police registered a kidnapping case on the complaint of his family members, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla.

His call details revealed his last location in Sangam Vihar, after which they zeroed in on Hashib Khan, who had earlier worked with Sachin and lives in the area.

Further probe also revealed that Sachin had taken Rs 2 lakh from Hashib. The cops then questioned the couple and found Sachin was in an alleged extramarital affair with Shabina Begum, according to police sources.

When Hashib came to know about this, he forced his wife to call Sachin to his home and stabbed him to death, they said. The body was later dumped in Dasna area, said police.

Muhammad Ali's "Thrilla In Manila" Shorts Up For Auction

Muhammad Ali's 'Thrilla In Manila' Shorts Up For Auction

The auction is open until April 12.

New York, United States:

The shorts worn by Muhammad Ali in his legendary “Thrilla in Manila” boxing match are up for grabs at Sotheby’s in New York, part of a growing sports memorabilia market eyed by auction houses.

Bids — including the latest for $3.8 million — have been rolling in since late March for the Everlast-brand shorts, which are white with black stripes and are signed by Ali.

The auction is open until April 12.

The sale comes as Sotheby’s is auctioning off a slew of sports lots, including a uniform from NBA star Victor Wembanyama.

Despite a growing interest in historic sporting items, Sotheby’s said that, as of Thursday, the minimum price agreed to by the seller of Ali’s shorts has not yet been reached.

Sotheby’s estimates the shorts could eventually fetch $4-6 million.

Ali’s 1975 “Thrilla in Manila” fight against Joe Frazier was held in the Philippines and followed his “Rumble in the Jungle” bout in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (then called Zaire) the year before.

Ali’s fight in the Philippines went to 14 rounds before Frazier’s coach threw in the towel.

“It was like death. Closest thing to dying that I know of,” Ali said of the fight, which was held amid stifling heat and humidity, with temperatures heightened by TV lights.

Ali, born Cassius Clay in the southeastern state of Kentucky, is known as both a sporting great and for his role in fighting for civil rights for African Americans. He died in 2016.

Also for sale is a raft of NBA jerseys, including French player Wembanyama’s complete uniform from an exhibition game held earlier this year.

Interest in the game day goods also apparently extends to items from Wembanyama’s locker — including a chair, water bottles and a towel.

For those who don’t have the cash for the jersey — estimated to sell for $80-120,000 — the locker contents are estimated to go for $5-7,000.

PV Sindhu Opts Out Of Uber Cup; Strong Side For Thomas Cup Title Defence

Double Olympic medallist P V Sindhu and the two top doubles pairs have opted out of the Uber Cup but a strong men’s team will take the court for its title defence in the Thomas Cup, commencing in Chengdu from April 27. Sindhu, who has played six tournaments since returning to action at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in February, pulled out of the event to give herself more time to recover and be battle-ready for the Paris Olympics.

Top women’s doubles pairs — Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand and Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto — also withdrew since it is not a full strength team with Sindhu missing. They chose to focus on the other assignments as they strive to earn the Olympics qualification.

Following the withdrawal of Sindhu and the two pairs, Badminton Association of India (BAI) decided to reward the players who performed at the Senior National Championships by give them the India cap.

“Sindhu opted out as she is coming back from an injury and she wants to give herself enough time to prepare for Paris Games where she will hope to win another medal for the country,” BAI secretary Sanjay Mishra told PTI.

“The doubles pairs also decided to skip the event as they too have been playing a lot of tournaments and want to focus on their qualification, so we have rewarded the semifinalists of the national championships by including them in the team.” India are the defending champions in Thomas Cup, having clinched the epic crown in 2022. The selectors decided to field a strong squad with a perfect mix of youth and experience.

The Indian men’s team had created history in Thailand when they defeated formidable Indonesia 3-0 in the final to clinch their first-ever Thomas Cup crown.

The senior selection committee also decided to have more options in singles considering the hectic schedule of all players this season.

A 10-member team for Thomas Cup will have five singles players with Kiran George joining HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth and Priyanshu Rajawat, while Sai Pratheek will be the back-up doubles player to the two first-choice combinations, namely World No. 1 pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila.

The final decision on the Thomas Cup squad was taken after an online meeting of the selection committee that comprises Chief National coach Pulella Gopichand, former India stars U Vimal Kumar, Jwala Gutta, Manjusha Kanwar, Partho Ganguly and Mallika Baruah Sarma.

“The committee felt we needed to have one additional player in the singles, while in doubles they have picked top two pairs and Sai Pratheek is selected as an additional doubles player after consultation with Mathias Boe (Danish doubles coach) just in case somebody is not fully fit or needs recovery,” Mishra said.

For the Uber Cup, the selectors decided to give an opportunity to youngsters after top players in both singles and doubles pulled out.

The 17-year-old Anmol Kharab, who is India’s latest badminton sensation, will be watched keenly at the big stage where she have Ashmita Chaliha and Tanvi Sharma as her teammates in singles.

“The Uber Cup team also looks good with the young talented players. I wish them the best of luck and hope they will make the nation proud with their performances.” Thomas Cup squad: (Singles) HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, Priyanshu Rajawat and Kiran George; (Doubles) Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, MR Arjun, Dhruv Kapila and Sai Pratheek Uber Cup squad: (Singles) Anmol Kharb, Tanvi Sharma, Ashmita Chaliha and Isharani Baruah; (Doubles) Shruti Mishra, Priya Konjengbam, Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker.

US’s ongoing arms supplies for Israel exposes Washington’s hypocrisy: Houthi

The leader of Yemen’s Ansarullah popular resistance movement denounces the United States’ uninterrupted arms supplies for the Israeli regime, which is waging a genocidal war against the Gaza Strip.

Abdul-Malik al-Houthi made the remarks during a televised address on Thursday.

“This week, the Americans announced new shipments of weapons and equipment to support the Israeli enemy with billions of dollars,” he said, adding, “The American media confirms that Israel has received the largest military aid since World War II.”

Reporting late last month, The Washington Post said the administration of US President Joe Biden had authorized the transfer of billions of dollars in bombs and warplanes to the Israeli regime in a matter of days.

Pentagon and State Department officials said the new arms packages included more than 1,800 bombs, the daily said at the time.

Reports say the Washington has quietly made more than 100 weapons sales to Tel Aviv since October 7, when the latter began the war against Gaza in response to a retaliatory operation by the coastal sliver’s resistance movements.

More than 33,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in the brutal military onslaught so far.

Houthi said, “The announced deals represent only a small part of what America provides to the criminal Israeli enemy.”

The Ansarullah leader added that the United States’ constant flow of arms towards the Israeli regime — which comes amid Washington’s calls for a ceasefire in Gaza — “exposes the American hypocrisy.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Yemeni official noted that the country would continue its pro-Palestinian operations, which have seen Yemeni forces striking Israeli vessels or those belonging to the regime’s supporters.

“Our front in Yemen continues its military operations in the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, and even reaching as far as the Indian Ocean,” he said.

“The total number of targeted ships reached 90,” he said, noting that the US and the UK, which have been trying to counter the Yemeni strikes, had “acknowledged their complete inability to stop the attacks.”

Elon Musk's Tesla Begins Making Cars In Germany For Export To India: Report

Elon Musk's Tesla Begins Making Cars In Germany For Export To India: Report

It was not immediately clear which model Tesla plans to export to India

New Delhi:

Tesla has begun production of right-hand drive cars at its plant in Germany for export to India later this year, three people aware of the company’s plans told Reuters, as it moves ahead with a possible entry into the world’s third-largest car market.

A team from Tesla is expected to visit India later this month to look at sites for a local car manufacturing plant that would require an investment of about $2 billion, said two of the three people, who declined to be named because the plans are not public yet.

India last month slashed the import tax rate on certain electric vehicles if their makers invest at least $500 million in the country and start production there within three years. The move is a win for Tesla, which had lobbied for months for lower taxes, but faced resistance from local carmakers.

“The right-hand drive cars which will be allocated to India, they have started building them,” one of the people said, with some cars due to be shipped to India by the end of the year.

READ | Tesla To Explore Locations In India For $3 Billion EV Factory: Report

It was not immediately clear which model Tesla plans to export to India. It currently produces only the Model Y at its factory near Berlin.

Under the new Indian policy, companies can import up to 8,000 cars a year at the lower tax rate.

Tesla did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment outside U.S. office hours.

The plans for shipments to India are the first indication of right-hand drive (RHD) cars being produced in Berlin. Tesla’s Shanghai plant, its primary export hub located nearer to right-hand-drive markets, such as Australia and Japan, has so far handled production of such vehicles.

Tesla imported RHD Model Y vehicles for its launch in the UK from China and has not said whether it has shifted to importing from Berlin.

The carmaker has eyed the Indian market for years and its officials visited the country several times over the past year. CEO Elon Musk also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York last June.

Tesla’s push into India comes at a time when slowing EV demand in its main U.S. and China markets coincides with intensifying competition from Chinese players. That caused Tesla to report a drop in its first-quarter deliveries and miss estimates.

Tesla’s India entry plan also includes investment in a charging network, which will come on top of the $2 billion earmarked for the plant, and sourcing more components locally, said one of the three sources.

“Tesla already imports parts from India and is now looking at reducing sourcing from China and making India a bigger sourcing hub,” said the person.

Tesla is looking at the southern state of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra in the west, and Modi’s home state of Gujarat for its factory, which it expects to build in two years, two of the sources said.

India’s EV market, small but growing, is dominated by domestic carmaker Tata Motors. Electric models made up 2% of total car sales in 2023 but the government is targeting 30% by 2030.

In January, Tesla’s Vietnamese rival VinFast agreed to invest $2 billion in India and started building an EV factory in Tamil Nadu state.

Encourage People From Manipur Living Outside To Vote In State: Delhi Meitei Forum

Encourage People From Manipur Living Outside To Vote In State: Delhi Meitei Forum

Members of the Delhi Meitei Forum (DMF) distribute relief material in Manipur

New Delhi:

A civil society group based in Delhi and run by working professionals from Manipur has appealed to people from the crisis-hit state who are living across the country to return home, if they can, to participate in the electoral process in the world’s largest democracy.

Manipur has two Lok Sabha seats – Inner Manipur, and a reserved seat, Outer Manipur. The Lok Sabha elections will be held in the state that’s recovering from ethnic clashes between the Kuki-Zo tribes and the Meiteis, and where over 45,000 people are still living in relief camps.

“We would like to appeal to everyone from Manipur, from all communities, who are living outside the state to go to Manipur and cast their vote in this Lok Sabha election,” the civil society group Delhi Meitei Forum (DMF) said in a statement.

“Travel to Manipur is expensive, so we understand that’s a roadblock. However, whoever can afford to go to Manipur should participate in the electoral process in the world’s largest democracy,” said the DMF, which has been proving aid and other humanitarian relief to internally displaced people in Manipur.

“Choosing a good leader is the need of the hour more than ever, a leader who can solve the Manipur crisis and bring peace for all communities,” a key member of the DMF said.

The DMF said it is a “completely independent group” working for the well-being of the Meitei community, and asked other civil society groups not to include its name as a partner or a member in their activities. DMF sources said they have seen some groups using the DMF name as a partner in their communication to the authorities, which should not be done to avoid legal issues.

Another group, the Delhi Meitei Coordinating Committee (DMCC), had in a statement said it has written to the Chief Justice of India, the Chief Election Commissioner, and other constitutional authorities to defer the Lok Sabha elections in Manipur. The DMCC had mentioned the DMF is part of the DMCC “conglomeration”, which DMF sources said is simply wrong.

The Inner Manipur constituency will see a massive electoral battle among candidates who all have wide acceptance among the public, leaving voters spoilt for choices.

The BJP has fielded Manipur Education Minister and former Indian Police Service officer Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh, and the Congress has fielded Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, who is a professor in Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University. This would be Mr Akoijam’s first electoral contest. Maheshwar Thounaojam of the Republican Party of India (Athawale) is also giving a spirited fight.

The BJP is not contesting in Outer Manipur, but supporting Kachui Timothy Zimik, a candidate of the BJP’s ally Naga People’s Front (NPF). The Congress has fielded Alfred Kanngam S Arthur in this constituency.

The entire Inner Manipur constituency and some areas under Outer Manipur will vote on April 19. The remaining areas under Outer Manipur will vote on April 26. Votes will be counted on June 4.

Pinarayi Vijayan Condemns Doordarshan's Decision To Screen 'The Kerala Story'

Pinarayi Vijayan Condemns Doordarshan's Decision To Screen 'The Kerala Story'

The party asked it not to stand with the “BJP’s attempt to polarise” the secular Kerala society.

Thiruvananthapuram:

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Thursday condemned the Doordarshan’s decision to telecast “The Kerala Story” and asked the public broadcaster to withdraw from screening the controversial movie, saying it would only “exacerbate communal tensions” ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

He also asked the national broadcaster not to become a “propaganda machine” for the BJP and the RSS.

“The decision by @DDNational to broadcast the film ‘Kerala Story’, which incites polarisation, is highly condemnable. The national news broadcaster should not become a propaganda machine of the BJP-RSS combine and withdraw from screening a film that only seeks to exacerbate communal tensions ahead of the general elections.

“Kerala will remain steadfast in opposing such malicious attempts to sow hatred,” Vijayan said in a post on X.

Doordarshan has announced that the movie will be broadcast on April 5.

In a statement, the ruling CPI(M) also asked the public broadcaster to withdraw its decision to telecast the movie.

The party asked it not to stand with the “BJP’s attempt to polarise” the secular Kerala society.

The state secretariat of the CPI(M) alleged that the BJP decided to screen the controversial movie as the general elections are nearing, hoping to advance their political agenda since the saffron party was unable to make inroads in Kerala society.

“This amounts to challenging Kerala. Kerala had witnessed strong protests when it was released. The censor board itself had removed 10 scenes from the movie,” CPI(M) said.

A public sector broadcast service should not stand with the “BJP’s attempt to polarise” the secular Kerala society, it said.

The Kerala High Court had last year refused to stay the release of the film, stating that the movie trailer does not contain anything offensive to any particular community as a whole.

The court had said that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has examined the movie and found that it is suitable for public exhibition.

The movie’s trailer was severely criticised and challenged before the court for “falsely” claiming that 32,000 women from Kerala got converted and radicalised and were deployed in terror missions both in India and the world.

The BJP had alleged that there was an unofficial ban on the movie in the theatres of the state.

Strong protest was held by the CPI(M) and the Congress against the movie when it was released in 2023.

Israel Says Will Allow "Temporary" Aid Through Northern Gaza Border

Israel Says Will Allow 'Temporary' Aid Through Northern Gaza Border

The move comes as international pressure mounts on Israel after 7 aid workers killed in Gaza.

Jerusalem:

Israel will allow “temporary” aid deliveries via its border with the northern Gaza Strip, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced Friday, reopening the Erez crossing into the famine-threatened territory for the first time since the October 7 attacks that sparked the war.

“Israel will allow the temporary delivery of humanitarian aid through Ashdod and the Erez checkpoint,” said a government statement released hours after a warning from US President Joe Biden.

“This increased aid will prevent a humanitarian crisis and is necessary to ensure the continuation of the fighting and to achieve the goals of the war,” the statement added.

The announcement comes as international pressure mounts on Israel after it took responsibility for a strike that killed seven aid workers.

In a tense, 30-minute call with Netanyahu on Thursday, Biden “made clear that US policy with respect to Gaza” will be determined based on “specific, concrete, and measurable steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering, and the safety of aid workers”, according to a White House statement.

According to Israel’s statement, in addition to allowing aid through the Erez border crossing and the port of Ashdod, about 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of Gaza, the authorities will also allow “increased Jordanian aid through Kerem Shalom”, a border crossing in southern Israel.
