India Is World's Largest Democracy, An Important Strategic Partner: US

The Biden administration asserted that India was an important strategic partner of the US.

The Biden administration asserted that India was an important strategic partner of the US and added that the status of the relationship is expected to remain unchanged.

US State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller was responding to a question at a press conference on Monday on the US-India relationship in the context of some articles and opinion pieces critical of the Indian government published ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in India.

To a question on alleged “concerns about democratic backsliding in India” and the recent statements by the State Department regarding the alleged “crackdown on opposition”, Miller said, “India is the world’s largest democracy. It is an important strategic partner of the United States and I expect that to remain true.” US officials in the recent past have called India a “very important partner” and that the relationship between the two countries continues to grow.

However, after the historic Official State Visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House last year, there has been some unease in the bilateral relationship, particularly on the issue of the Sikh separatist movement in the US and the unusual statement by the State Department on the issue of the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

India had strongly objected to such a comment from the State Department.

Iran to respond to any fresh Israeli mistake ‘within seconds’: Deputy FM

Iran’s deputy foreign minister has warned that the Islamic Republic would respond to any fresh Israeli “mistake” against the country “within seconds.”

Ali Bagheri Kani, deputy foreign minister for political affairs, made the remarks in a televised interview on Monday.

“In case of repetition of another mistake, they should expect a harsher, faster, and more immediate response,” he said.

“This time, the Zionists should know this that they will not have a 12-day-long timespace,” the official noted, adding, “The response that they are going to receive [this time around] cannot be measured by [such time standards as] days or hours, but [will come in a matter of] seconds.”

On April 1, the Israeli regime committed a terrorist attack against Iran’s diplomatic premises in the Syrian capital Damascus.

The Israeli attack resulted in the martyrdom of Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), his deputy, General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, and five of their accompanying officers.

In retaliation, the IRGC targeted the occupied territories late on Saturday with a barrage of drones and missiles. The retaliatory strikes, dubbed Operation True Promise, has inflicted damage on Israeli military bases across the Palestinian occupied territories.

“If there is any [measure of] rationality within the Zionist regime, they [will know this that they] must not repeat their strategic mistake with another mistake,” Bagheri said.

The Zionists, the official stated, should know that if their mistake concerning the Iranian consulate warrants such a crushing retaliation, then their likely malign intentions against the Iranian soil would “principally entail a much more vehement response.”

Amid speculation about the potential Israeli attack, senior Iranian political and military leaders, including President Ebrahim Raeisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, have warned of a stronger and more severe response.

Not Dhoni, Hardik Names 'Difference Maker' Who Won CSK The Game vs MI

Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya feels Matheesha Pathirana turned out to be the “difference” in the IPL’s ‘El Clasico,’ which ended with the Chennai Super Kings emerging triumphant. In the clash of heavyweights, which turned out to be a high-scoring run-fest, CSK turned it up a notch to clinch a 20-run victory at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday in the ongoing IPL. After the opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan bashed CSK in the powerplay, it was Pathirana who made the difference in the 8th over.

He brought an end to the 70-run stand by dismissing Kishan and then sending Suryakumar Yadav for a two-ball duck following a moment of brilliance in the field by Mustafizur Rahman.

“Definitely it was gettable. But I think they bowled pretty well, Pathirana was the difference. He came and got the wickets, at the same time they were also quite smart with their approach. They used the longer boundary well,” Haridk said after the game.

“It was about batting well and keeping our intent, which we did till Pathirana came in. We were on course to get the total, those couple of wickets [in his first over] we lost set us back. From there we were chasing the game,” he added.

CSK had a number of players using variation to exploit conditions and bag wickets. Shardul Thakur was among those, but he got smacked all over the park. He ended up conceding 33 runs in his first three overs.

Even Mustafizur Rahman struggled to find his rhythm and conceded 55 runs in his four-over spell. However, Shardul came back to concede just two runs in his final over and make the equation 77 off 36.

Tushar Deshpande followed it up by removing skipper Pandya, which turned the equation to 72 off 24.

“They were smart with the plans and their approach. They got the hang of it, there’s a man behind the stumps (Dhoni) who tells them what’s working, that helps. It (pitch) was holding up a bit and getting difficult,” Pandya added.

Coming to the match, MI put CSK to bat after winning the toss. CSK soared high with valiant knocks from Shivam Dube (66*) and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (69). MS Dhoni added the finishing touches with his short cameo, powering CSK to 206/4.

In reply, Rohit Sharma stuck a rollicking 105* but failed to get MI across the finishing line.

FBI Opens Criminal Investigation Into US Bridge Collapse: Report

FBI Opens Criminal Investigation Into US Bridge Collapse: Report

The bridge — a major transit route into the busy city and port of Baltimore — was destroyed in seconds.

Washington:

The FBI has launched a criminal probe targeting the container ship that crashed into a major road bridge in Baltimore last month, collapsing it and killing six people, US media reported Monday.

The Washington Post described it as a “criminal investigation,” and cited two unnamed US officials as saying the probe will look “at least in part” at whether the crew knew the ship had serious systems problems when it left the port.

In a statement to AFP, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said that as a matter of policy it does not confirm or deny investigations.

But it did say its agents were aboard the Singapore-flagged Dali container ship, which remains pinned beneath the wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge nearly three weeks after the disaster.

“The FBI is present aboard the cargo ship Dali conducting court authorized law enforcement activity. There is no other public information available and we will have no further comment,” it said in a statement Monday.

The bridge, a major transit route into the busy city and port of Baltimore, was destroyed in seconds on March 26 when the Dali lost power and drifted into a support column.

The ship had managed to issue a Mayday call in the moments before the collision which gave police time to stop traffic on the bridge, likely saving lives.

But an eight-man construction crew repairing potholes on the bridge could not be reached in time, and plummeted with the tons of concrete and twisted steel into the cold waters below.

Two workers were rescued alive — one briefly hospitalized, but the other uninjured. The bodies of two more have been found, while four remain missing, believed to still be pinned beneath the wreckage.

Shipping in and out of Baltimore — one of the United States’ busiest ports — has been halted, with the waterway impassable due to the sprawling wreckage.

The authorities hope that removing the bridge — by cutting it into smaller sections and lifting them out — will help rescuers recover all the victims’ bodies and eventually reopen the crucial shipping lane.

The National Transportation Safety Board has also opened an investigation into the disaster.

Ayodhya Ram Temple Management Cancels VIP Darshan Till April 18. Here's Why

Bookings of all types of special passes have already been cancelled.

Ayodhya:

All VIP passes for the new Ram temple in Ayodhya have been cancelled for three days up to April 18 as the temple management expects heavy footfall of devotees during the Ram Navami festival, a Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra member said on Monday.

Temple trust member Anil Mishra said this is the first Ram Navami after the consecration ceremony at the temple and there is a possibility of many devotees turning up on the occasion.

“In such a situation, a new guideline has been issued by the trust to ensure easy darshan for all devotees. A decision was taken during a temple construction committee meeting that there will be no VIP and VVIP darshan from April 15 to 18,” he said.

Champat Rai, general secretary of the trust, said bookings of all types of special passes have already been cancelled. “Everyone will have to go through the same route,” he said.

Mr Rai added that darshan time has been extended till 11 pm. Curtains will be drawn four times for five minutes each during the offering of ‘bhog’.

He also requested distinguished dignitaries to come for darshan only after April 19.

Also, on Ram Navami, arrangements will be made for devotees to queue up from 3.30 am, Rai said.

He added that Ram Janmotsav will be broadcast on around 100 big LED screens. To avoid hassle and wastage of time, visitors should not bring their mobile phones.

Mr Rai also said that a railway reservation unit will be set up at the passenger convenience centre on Darshan Marg.

Knife Attack At Sydney Church A Terror Incident: Australia Police

Knife Attack At Sydney Church A Terror Incident: Australia Police

Police arrested a male teenager at the scene on Monday after the incident.

Sydney:

A knife attack during a service at an Assyrian church in Sydney was a terrorist act motivated by suspected religious extremism, Australian police said on Tuesday.

At least four people were wounded in the attack, including Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel of the Assyrian Christ The Good Shepherd Church, during a service live streamed at the western Sydney suburb of Wakeley on Monday.

The incident triggered clashes between angry crowds and police outside the church.

Police arrested a male teenager at the scene on Monday and were forced to hold him at the church for his own safety after a crowd gathered outside and demanded the attacker be brought out.

“We believe there are elements that are satisfied in terms of religious motivated extremism,” New South Wales state Police Commissioner Karen Webb said during a press conference.

The bishop, whose live-streamed sermons attract a global audience, was speaking during an evening service on Monday when a man lunged at him with a knife, according to video footage.

It was the second major stabbing attack in just three days in Australia’s most populous city after six people were killed in a knife attack at a beachside mall in the Bondi area on Saturday.

"Everyone Will Regret": PM Modi On Scrapping Of Electoral Bonds Scheme

The Prime Minister said the country has been pushed towards “black money” in elections

New Delhi:

The scrapping of the electoral bonds – in a landmark decision by the Supreme Court in February – is a decision “everyone will regret when there is honest reflection” and has “completely pushed the country towards black money”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told news agency ANI Monday.

The Prime Minister said the electoral bonds scheme launched by his government was meant to fight the use of ‘black money’, referring to unaccounted cash or funds from criminal activities, in election campaigns, and that he had “never claimed this was an absolute way” to achieve that goal.

Mr Modi also attacked the opposition for spreading “lies” about the bonds and said his government had introduced the scheme to cut down on ‘black money’ during elections. He countered criticism – that his Bharatiya Janata Party was the largest beneficiary, to the tune of thousands of crores.

“There has been a discussion in our country for a long time… that black money allows for dangerous games to be played during elections. That money is spent in elections… no one denies. My party also spends… all parties and all candidates spend, and this money is taken from the people. I wanted to try something… how can our elections be free from this black money? How can there be transparency for people giving donations? This was a pure thought in my mind,” the PM said.

“We were looking for a way. We found a small way… never claimed this was absolute,” he said, building on comments from earlier this month, when he told a Tamil news channel “no system is perfect… shortcomings can be improved“.

Mr Modi’s comments on electoral bonds came in a wide-ranging interview aired this evening – four days before the start of the Lok Sabha election – that included detailed remarks on the opposition INDIA bloc, the contentious ‘One Nation, One Election’ scheme, and allegations his government uses central investigative agencies, like the Enforcement Directorate, to target rivals before polls.

PM Modi On Electoral Bonds

The electoral bonds scheme – which was supposed to allow private individuals and corporates to make completely anonymous donations to any political party (previously anonymity was limited to donations below the Rs 2,000-mark) – was struck down by the Supreme Court in February.

A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud ruled the scheme unconstitutional on two counts – it violated the people’s right to information and the right to equality. The court directed the State Bank of India (the sole sales point for the bonds) to release data about buyers and beneficiaries.

Mr Modi, however, pointed out to ANI that the 16 companies which bought electoral bonds after facing money laundering cases, and that 63 per cent of that amount went to parties other than the BJP.

He then took a double jibe at the opposition, saying, “The work of donating to the opposition… will BJP do this? 63 per cent went to them… and you are making allegations against us?” he asked.

“This is the success story of electoral bonds. There were electoral bonds… so you are getting a (money) trail of which company gave, how much, where. Whether what happened was good or bad can be an issue of debate…” Mr Modi explained to ANI.

PM Modi On Opposition Attacks

The Prime Minister stoutly denied allegations by the opposition – that the political landscape is tilted in favour of the ruling party. The opposition has pointed to changes like the new law that allows the government to choose poll panel officials, who are supposed to ensure a free and fair election.

On that topic he told ANI, “In fact, we have made improvements. Today, when the Election Commission is formed, the opposition is also in it.” Mr Modi was referring to the law mandating the Leader of the Opposition as the third in a three-member selection panel. The other two are the PM and a Union Minister.

The Prime Minister also responded to claims the government uses central agencies to harass rivals. He pointed out that only three per cent of cases filed by the ED were against political leaders.

He also declared those involved in corruption would have “paap ka dar“, or fear of sin, and that honest persons had nothing to fear. Mr Kejriwal’s former deputy, Manish Sisodia, and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi’s K Kavitha, were also arrested in this case.
