Navjot Sidhu's Wife Undergoes Cancer Surgery. He Says 'Rarest Of Rare…"

Former Indian cricket team batter and cricket commentator Navjot Singh Sidhu provided a huge update on his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s cancer operation. She has been suffering from breast cancer and this was her second operation after undergoing chemotherapy.  “Operation for rarest of rare Metastasis – lasted three and a half hours …. Affected skin removed and reconstruction done with flaps … her resolve is steadfast , the smile never leaves her face – courage thy name is Noni … Dr Rupinder hoping for a speedy recovery….,” he posted on X (formerly called Twitter).

Sidhu believes that Rohit Sharma would not have been replaced by Hardik Pandya as Mumbai Indians captain had the BCCI named him skipper for the T20 World Cup last year itself.
Rohit was declared captain of India’s yet-to-be-named T20 World Cup squad in February this year by BCCI secretary Jay Shah at an event in Ahmedabad, a good two months after he was replaced by Pandya as MI skipper.

“If the BCCI had named Rohit as captain for the T20 World Cup in October, the franchise wouldn’t have chosen Hardik as captain. It’s a matter of the franchise’s respect. So, the actual issue here is timing,” Sidhu said in ‘Star Sports Press Room’.

Pandya has been facing hostility from fans in the ongoing IPL, booed in all three matches so far, including the one at MI’s home turf of Wankhede, besides ending up on the losing side.

Sidhu said the fans’ reaction is quite understandable as Rohit is a much-loved cricketer.

“Nobody can digest the fact that India’s hero, India’s captain, is not the captain of our franchise. ‘What wrong has he done?’ is what fans of the franchise would be thinking. But what does he have to do? “There is nothing that succeeds like success. If he had won these two matches, there wouldn’t have been any noise,” he pointed out.

Talking about other teams in the IPL, Sidhu felt Royal Challengers Bengaluru have become predictable, especially in their spin bowling.

“The biggest thing needed in the winning of a team is that they are not dependent on just one individual to achieve victory. We do talk about Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis, but you got to saddle the right horse.

“The chain is as strong as the weakest link, and their weakness lies in the spin department. Their spinners are just not there, so therefore they will have to replenish that area. Like, RCB had (Wanindu) Hasaranga, who was pretty good and even before him, there was Yuzvendra Chahal,” he observed.

“But they let them go and that has created a void in their bowling line-up. RCB haven’t been able to fill that void, which makes them predictable. Now look at (MS) Dhoni – when he comes, no one knows his plan,” he said.

Israel agreed to maritime corridor to control aid, displace Gazans: Experts

Israel has backed the US plan to construct a pier allegedly aimed at getting aid into Gaza in order to retain control over the aid deliveries and as a way to displace Palestinians from the besieged strip via the Mediterranean Sea, experts say.

US President Joe Biden ordered the construction of the pier in March. Shortly afterwards, the US deployed naval ships to the Eastern Mediterranean to construct the “floating pier” that will reportedly receive aid from a Cyprus, and send it onward to Gaza.

The US announcement came amid mounting pressure on Israel to allow aid into Gaza as the UN and other aid agencies have warned of imminent famine due to Israel’s prevention of the land-based delivery of life-saving aid to Gaza.

“People in Gaza are starving, so they will be encouraged by aid that comes from any place,” Talal Okal, a UAE-based Palestinian political analyst, told Middle East Eye.

Okal noted that Israel rushed to back the pier as it echoes Israeli foreign minister Israel Katz’ plan to build a futuristic artificial island off the coast of Gaza, which, he says, is designed to consolidate the regime’s control over aid to the strip, not bring in more.

Katz proposed an artificial island to distribute aid to Gaza during a meeting with European Union foreign ministers in January. Back then, reports said the proposal caused dismay in Brussels.

Shira Efron, director of research at the Israeli Policy Forum, reiterated that the US-announced pier and Katz’ plan are similar.

“There are similarities between the two ideas,” Efron told MEE.

Efron, who also consults with a UN team in al-Quds advising on Gaza, also noted that the maritime corridor was attractive to Israel because it “wants to retain overall security control of Gaza.”

“Cyprus is fine with Israel determining the inspections regime and committing to do what Israel tells them security-wise,” she said.

“For Israel, it’s a great deal,” she said.

David Harden, a former US Aid mission director to the West Bank and Gaza, stressed that the maritime corridor should not be used as an excuse to prevent the opening of more land crossings.

“From a humanitarian perspective, you want as many points of access as possible, but the land crossings are everything,” Harden said, adding “Israel has the means and obligation to prevent a famine in Gaza.”

Okal said “I think the port will make it convenient for Israel to keep land borders to Gaza closed.”

“In Gaza, all aid is political,” he added.

Okal also believes that Israel agreed to the pier as a way to displace Palestinians from Gaza via the Mediterranean, ahead of an expected invasion of the southern town of Rafah, where nearly more than half of Gaza’s population of 2.4 have sought shelter from Israeli strikes elsewhere in Gaza.

“There are more corridors, better, faster, and cheaper via land. This [the port] is a way to help the Israelis fulfill their goal of displacing Palestinians after their failure to push them into Sinai.”

Meanwhile, the pier was criticized as a virtue signaling by the Biden administration amid its inability to pressure Israel to allow aid into Gaza by land.

Jose Andres, the celebrity chef of the NGO World Central Kitchen (WCK), was among the critics of the US proposal, saying the US administration needed to start demanding that Israel “stop killing children, targeting humanitarian volunteers and press! [And] open more routes by road into Gaza.”

He made the remarks in a social media post last month, adding the US military-led mission “not the answer nor welcomed by the people of Gaza.”

Last week, seven aid workers, including foreign nationals, working for the WCK were killed in an Israeli airstrike in central Gaza. After the attack, the NGO and several other aid organizations have suspended all operations in Gaza out of safety concerns.

Israel launched the war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas waged the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in response to the Israeli regime’s decades-long campaign of bloodletting and devastation against Palestinians.

Tel Aviv has also blocked water, food, and electricity to Gaza, plunging the coastal strip into a humanitarian crisis.

The EU’s foreign policy chief has said Israel was using starvation as a “weapon of war”, while the UN’s top court ordered Israel to ensure the “unhindered” delivery of food and other aid to Gaza.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed 33,037 Palestinians and injured nearly 75,668 others.

ED cracks down on Pune ponzi kingpin, seizes Rs 24.41 cr in bank accounts

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate has issued a ‘provisional attachment order’ attaching movable assets worth Rs 24.41 crore of various individuals, entities and firms which are used by Vinod Khute, owner of the Pune-based VIPS Group of Companies and Global Affiliate Business Company, in an alleged money laundering case, an official said on Friday.

According to ED, the attached assets, under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) of 2022, are in the form of balance in 58 bank accounts amounting to Rs 21.27 crore and deposits of Rs 3.14 crore.

The probe agency has commenced an investigation following an FIR lodged by the Bharti Vidyapeeth Police Station in Pune. The FIR, filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, implicates Vinod Tukaram Khute, Santosh Khute, Mangesh Khute, Kiran Pitamber Anarase, Ajinkya Badadhe, and unidentified others.

They are accused of deceiving individuals and conspiring to entice them into a Ponzi scheme and forex trading with promises of high returns. This resulted in the collection of over Rs 100 crore in the bank accounts of numerous fraudulent firms and entities.

“ED investigation revealed that Vinod Khute who is absconding and suspected to be presently residing in Dubai, is the mastermind of various illegal trade, crypto exchange, wallet services, and forex trading through Dubai-based firm M/s Kana Capital Limited,” said ED in a statement issued on Friday.

Investigation has revealed that Vinod Khute established multiple companies, including VIPSWALLET Pvt Ltd, VIPSTRADE Finance Private Limited, Kana Capitals Limited, Global Affiliate Business (GAB), VIPS Securities, and VIPS Properties, among others, to carry out illicit financial activities.

“Further, funds were collected from investors and routed through shell companies and dummy accounts to conceal the illicit nature of the transactions. Thereafter, funds were transferred out of India to Dubai through hawala operators, in exchange for cryptocurrency such as USDT, to evade regulatory scrutiny and facilitate money laundering,” the ED said.

The probe agency further said that the proceeds of crime (more than Rs 100 crore quantified as per the investigation conducted so far) have been utilised by Vinod Khute for his personal use, running day-to-day affairs of his companies, acquiring properties in Dubai as well as in India, etc.

Earlier, ED had issued a Provisional Attachment Order under the provisions of the PMLA, 2002 attaching overseas assets located in Dubai worth Rs 37.50 crore belonging to Vinod Khute. The total attachment in this case now stands at Rs 61.91 Crore.

Congress manifesto pledges to engage with Pakistan depending on its willingness to end cross-border terrorism

Congress manifesto pledges to engage with Pakistan depending on its willingness to end cross-border terrorism

New Delhi: The Congress party will repair India’s relations with the Maldives and will engage with Pakistan on its willingness and ability to end cross-border terrorism if it is voted to power following the Lok Sabha elections poised to be held from April 19, as per the party manifesto released on Friday.

“We will repair relations with the Maldives and work with Myanmar to protect the political and human rights of the people of Myanmar. Engagement with Pakistan depends fundamentally on its willingness and ability to end cross-border Terrorism. Congress will significantly increase the size of the Indian Foreign Service, open more missions abroad, leverage our economic strengths, and acquire a position of leadership through the country’s values and mutually beneficial economic relationships,” the manifesto said.

“There was a consensus on foreign policy since Independence. Unfortunately, in many areas, foreign policy under the BJP/NDA government has witnessed marked departures from this consensus, notably on the ongoing Gaza conflict. Congress pledges to restore India’s global reputation as a voice of peace and moderation in world affairs,” it added.

Emphasising improving bilateral relations with China, Congress promised to work on restoring the status quo ante on India-China borders to ensure the revival of armies patrolling in the areas which were accessible in past.

“Congress recognises that national security is not enhanced by chest-thumping or exaggerated claims but by quiet attention to our borders and resolute defence preparedness. We will work to restore the status quo ante on our borders with China and to ensure that areas where both armies patrolled in the past are again accessible to our soldiers. We will take the necessary steps to adjust our policy towards China until this is achieved,” the manifesto read.

“Congress will pay greater attention to our immediate neighbours. We will re-establish the primacy of our special relationships with Nepal and Bhutan and strengthen them to our mutual benefit. We will enhance economic and cultural relations between India and Bangladesh that are the two most populous countries in South Asia,” it added.

Congress also vowed to work with Sri Lanka to restore the political and commercial relations between the two countries.

“We will work with Sri Lanka to restore the political and commercial relations between the two countries and help Sri Lanka resolve its political issues, especially with the Tamils,” it said vowing to strengthen economic and cultural ties with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Earlier, External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar refuted any doubts regarding India’s relation with its neighbours, adding that there might be “forces” inside India and in the neighbourhood “who want to create problems.”

He further said that barring Pakistan and China, India’s relationship with the neighbourhood is much better that it has been for a long time. “If we talk about neighbours, please go to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and ask people what they think. During their deepest economic trouble, who stood by? Go to Nepal and ask them where do you get your vaccines, who gave you fertilizer and fuel when the Ukraine trouble happened. So, I won’t agree that our neighbourhood is not in our favour. There may be forces in the neighbourhood and ‘forces behind forces’ who create problems…there may be people in India who like to play out this problem,” the EAM said.

He added, “As I said we have a very abnormal relation with China. With Pakistan, you all know what is the state of current relationship. But, barring those two, our relationship with the neighbourhood has been much better than it has been for a long time.”

"Hopefully He'll Move…": Ex-CSK Star's Wish For Dhoni Ahead Of SRH Clash

Former Australia cricketer Shane Watson said that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be learning from the mistakes that they made against Delhi Capitals (DC) in their previous encounter in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. After losing to Delhi Capitals (DC) by 20 runs in their previous clash in the ongoing IPL season, defending champions CSK currently sit third on the points table with 4 points after two wins and one loss, with the net run rate at 0.976. While speaking on JioCinema, Watson hoped that former CSK skipper MS Dhoni would move up in the batting order in their upcoming matches when the right opportunity comes in.

“CSK will be learning from the little things that went wrong against Delhi in their last game and make the most of the things that went incredibly well. One thing was Dhoni, the way he batted, coming in late in the game, which will mean that hopefully, he’ll move up the order when an opportunity presents itself, because he batted as well as I’ve seen him for a long time,” Watson told JioCinema.

He added that they will learn from their mistakes and will get ready for their next clash against the Hyderabad-based franchise.

“The lessons that CSK learned, that’s the reason why they’ve been so successful for so long because they’ll find out little elements they need to get better, they need to execute better and where they went wrong and they’ll learn from that. So they’ll be ready to go against Hyderabad,” he added.

On Friday, the Chennai-based franchise will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Chennai Super Kings Squad: Ruturaj Gaikwad (C), MS Dhoni (Wk), Rachin Ravindra, Ajinkya Rahane, Daryl Mitchell, Shivam Dube, Sameer Rizvi, Ravindra Jadeja, Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Matheesha Pathirana, Mustafizur Rahman, Shardul Thakur, Shaik Rasheed, Moeen Ali, Mitchell Santner, Devon Conway, Ajay Jadav Mandal, Prashant Solanki, Mukesh Choudhary, Simarjeet Singh, RS Hangargekar, Maheesh Theekshana, Nishant Sindhu, Aravelly Avanish.

Demand For Indian Healthcare Professionals To Rise Significantly By 2030 Report

New Delhi: Indian healthcare professionals are set to see a 100 per cent rise in the country and a two-fold demand worldwide by 2030, finds a report on Friday.

The report, NLB Services, a global technology, and digital talent solutions provider, showed that the global shortage of healthcare workers has spurred a significant increase in demand for Indian healthcare professionals, who are highly esteemed in the international market for their sought-after skills.

The report noted that India, with the largest number of medical colleges worldwide, stands out as one of the primary exporters of healthcare workers to developed nations such as Europe, the Gulf region, the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Israel.

NLB Services also reported witnessing a 15 per cent growth in demand for Indian nurses across markets like Norway, Germany, Austria, etc, while their demand in the UK and UAE has jumped by 12-15 per cent in the last 2-3 years.

In addition, Japan and New Zealand have emerged as new destinations for Indian nurses and doctors.

“India is emerging as a significant source of exportable healthcare talent, particularly for Europe and the Gulf region. To address global talent shortages, there’s a growing focus on cross-skilling initiatives. This ensures Indian nurses especially are equipped with the necessary skills and qualifications to meet the specific healthcare requirements of different countries,” said Sachin Alug, CEO, NLB Services.

“We’re seeing a surge in demand from countries like Malaysia, Italy, Portugal, Poland, and Germany. The nursing talent pool is expected to grow exponentially in the next five years, with estimates suggesting a 100-fold increase,” he added.

In India, their demand has been steadily increasing owing to population growth, demographic shifts, and the rise of non-communicable diseases.

From 2021 to 2023 jobs within the healthcare sector in India saw a nearly 22 per cent increase. Bengaluru leads in the number of healthcare job opportunities followed by other major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad.

Importantly, the report also showed a rise in healthcare jobs from tier II cities like Coimbatore, Ernakulam, Ahmedabad, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kochi.

Further, Kerala stood out as a significant contributor to healthcare talent migration to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, particularly to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), while Gujarat is actively enhancing nursing education and training to meet global demands.

A growing demand for home healthcare, including specialised services like physiotherapy, pain management, and chronic disease care, particularly, post Covid-19 pandemic, is also the reason behind the soaring demand.
