Zionist regime facing big, extraordinary defeats

Speaking during this week’s Friday prayers in Tehran on Quds Day, Hujjat al-Islam Abu Torabi Fard noted that this year’s Quds Day was different from previous years as it is commemorated after six months of the bombing campaign and military aggression by the Zionist Israeli regime against the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank.

“The Quds Day rallies in the Islamic world and in the east, west, north and south of the world will give a hand to Mujahideen in the fronts in Gaza and the brave people of Palestine,” he said about the Quds Day.

“Al-Aqsa Storm Operation was like an earthquake in the political, military and economic structure of the Zionist regime,” he said, adding that “the asymmetric war model based on the resistance in Gaza, Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen has challenged the military superiority of this regime.”

“The Zionists in Gaza are witnessing a total political, military and media failure to the public opinion of the world,” he added.

The senior cleric further noted that the atrocities and crimes committed by the Zionist regime caused the regime to receive verdicts in international courts.

He further said that the Israeli regime’s attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria came after the Zionists’ failures.

He continued that the Zionist regime is facing a powerful united front consisting of a coordinated military and ideological network with a unified and coordinated strategy that is standing by the heroic Hamas and Islamic Jihad. “A front from the Red Sea, the Mediterranean Sea to the Persian Gulf,” he concluded.

"Being Part Of NDA Depends On How JDS Leaders Are Treated": HD Kumaraswamy

'Being Part Of NDA Depends On How JDS Leaders Are Treated': HD Kumaraswamy

Mandya (Karnataka):

JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy has said he is sincerely working for NDA’s better prospects in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and the continuation of alliance with BJP, after the parliamentary elections, will depend on how his party and its leaders are treated.

The former Chief Minister further said that given an opportunity and if Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confidence in him, he wants to be the agriculture minister, in the event of NDA coming back to power at the Centre.

In an exclusive interview to PTI Videos, after filing his nomination from Mandya on Thursday, the state JD(S) President said: “We being part of the NDA depends on how our party leaders are treated in the future. We are sincerely working and we want a long-standing relationship with BJP. But ultimately we will take a decision depending on how we are treated and how much respect we get from the BJP.”

JD(S) headed by former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda joined the BJP-led NDA in September last year.

As part of the seat-sharing agreement, the BJP would contest in 25 constituencies and the JD(S) in the remaining three — Mandya, Hassan and Kolar — in Karnataka.

Mr Kumaraswamy, son of Gowda, made no secret of his desire to become Union Agriculture Minister.

“It is not only the aspirations of people of Mandya to see me as union minister, even my BJP friends feel that it will be good for the state if I become a minister. I come from an agricultural background and given an opportunity I want to be the agriculture minister and bring a good name for the government. If the Prime Minister believes that I can do good work and if I am given an opportunity I want to work in the agricultural sector,” he said.

The JD(S) leader, who is an MLA from Channapatna in the neighbouring Ramanagara district, said he was under a lot of pressure from the people of Mandya to contest from there.

“We have entered into an alliance with BJP to fight for better prospects for Karnataka and not for political survival. It is going to be mutually beneficial for both the BJP and JD(S). The Congress took advantage of the vote-split between us in the last (Assembly) election, we realised the mistake and we have decided to fight the Congress together,” he said.

Stating that it is BJP which is the “natural ally” of JD(S) and not the Congress, Mr Kumaraswamy said his party has always fought the grand old party for the last 50 years.

“Our last alliance with BJP (for 20 months from January 2006), when I was the Chief Minister was a good period and because of some misunderstanding and some misdeeds of miscreants we had to part ways,” he said, adding that leaders of parties and cadres are now sincerely working for each other.

“This time around there is a lot of positivity, energy and synergy between us. Be it (B S) Yediyurappa (BJP veteran) or Deve Gowda (JDS patriarch) or be it any of us. We all are working for each other to see to it that the NDA alliance gets all the 28 seats in Karnataka,” he added.

Mr Kumaraswamy also said the Congress in Karnataka had messed up the state’s finances because of its guarantee schemes and the government doesn’t have any funds for capital expenditure or development.

“Having mismanaged the finances now they are pointing fingers at the Centre over discrepancy in refund of GST and other grants,” he alleged.

Amid "Zombie Virus" Fears, 13 New Papillomaviruses Found In Antarctica

Amid 'Zombie Virus' Fears, 13 New Papillomaviruses Found In Antarctica

Two of these viruses have the capacity to infect humans.

Scientists have found 13 new viruses in remote part of Antarctica – and claimed that two of them could have impact on humans. The discovery was made by researchers from Arizona State University (ASU). The team studied Weddell seals for two years in the McMurdo Sound area of the Antarctic discovered the viruses from the papillomavirus family. These microscopic organisms have the capacity to infect humans, reptiles, birds and mammals. The viruses were found in the 109 nasal and vaginal swabs taken by the experts between 2015 and 2017.

The study detailing the discovery has been published in the journal Virology. The research team said its discovery will help future researchers understand the evolution of papillomaviruses.

Melanie Regney, a second-year PhD student and lead author of the paper, said she is excited to find the viruses in creatures ignored by other scientists.

“Viruses are everywhere. They’re the most abundant entity in the universe. But despite that, they’re one of the things we know the least about. We don’t even know most of them exist,” she said in a release posted on the university’s website.

“Antarctica as a whole continent is very pristine. It’s the only one that still remains the least touched by human presence… so we don’t know a lot about it. Studying the evolutionary aspect of Antarctica’s virome there is very important to understand how the ecosystem works there,” she added.

Ms Regney’s team sequenced the viruses’ genomes and compared them with the genomes of known papillomaviruses, revealing that they had found 13 novel papillomaviruses, 11 of which are entirely new viral types.

In January, scientists had warned about the dangers posed by viruses buried under ice caps in the Arctic and other places. They had said that the melting Arctic permafrost could release the “zombie viruses” and trigger a catastrophic global health emergency.

Why the RBI Wants to Support CBDC Distribution via Non-Bank Payment Firms

Several countries, including India, are expanding central bank digital currency (CBDC) trials, hoping to integrate then with their existing financial systems. The Reserve Bank of India has proposed the expansion of support for the digital rupee CBDC within the retail ecosystem beyond banks. In the coming days, the RBI is expected to start circulating the digital rupee through payment system operators who are not part of the banking system. The detail was disclosed on Friday in a statement by RBI Chief General Manager Yogesh Dayal.

Until now, India’s CBDC distribution was being conducted by banks that are part of its trials. Moving forward, however, RBI is likely to allow platforms like Google Pay and PhonePe also to distribute the digital rupee in the retail ecosystem.

“CBDC pilots in the retail and wholesale segments are underway with more use-cases and more participating banks. Continuing with this approach, it is proposed to make CBDC-retail accessible to a broader segment of users in a sustained manner, by enabling non-bank payment system operators to offer CBDC wallets,” Dayal said in a prepared statement issued by the RBI.

CBDCs are a virtual representation of the fiat currency of a country. Built on blockchain networks, they work like cryptocurrencies but are issued by a central bank. Through CBDCs, people can process quick payments of hefty amounts and all the transaction history will be stored in a permanent, unchangeable format.

“This is expected to enhance access and expand choices available to users apart from testing the resiliency of the CBDC platform to handle multi-channel transactions. Necessary changes will be made to the system to facilitate this,” the official said in the statement.

Since December 2022, the RBI has clocked an impressive feat in conducting research and development around the digital rupee. The CBDC is currently in an advanced trial phase in India.

In February this year, the RBI had spoken about its plans to experiment with offline solutions to drive the adoption of CBDC in those parts of India that are not as well connected to the Internet as developed cities.

In 2023, the State Bank of India introduced UPI interoperability with the digital rupee. Canara Bank also rolled out a similar offering.

“As per the data published in the balance sheet of the Reserve Bank of India as on March 31, 2023, the e-Rupee issued for CBDC (Retail) at Rs 5.70 crore,” the RBI had stated in February while answering an RTI appeal.

UN says 62 percent of homes in Gaza destroyed in Israeli strikes

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees says the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza has left more than 60 percent of homes in the besieged strip either damaged or destroyed.

“The ongoing conflict has damaged or destroyed approximately 62 percent of all homes in Gaza,” the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said on Thursday, citing a joint Interim Damage Assessment summary released by the United Nations, World Bank and European Union.

According to the UNRWA statement, the report used satellite imagery to assess damage.

The report also found that the war left “84 percent of all health facilities” in Gaza either damaged or destroyed, and also took a heavy toll on the education system in the strip.

“625,000 children in Gaza are out of school as the education system has collapsed,” it said.

The UNRWA said that the war has caused “unprecedented devastation”, with “severe social and mental health consequences” for women, youth, and vulnerable populations.

The agency noted that most of the nearly 980 NGOs registered in Gaza have suspended operations, exacerbating the humanitarian situation there amid security concerns.

According to the statement, the number of aid deliveries entering Gaza by land via the Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) and Rafah crossings “remains well below” the target.

Israel waged its genocidal war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas resistance group carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

The Tel Aviv regime has also imposed a “complete siege” on the territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed 33,091 Palestinians and injured nearly 75,750 others.

SCR commissions record 148 three-phase electric locomotives during last financial year

Hyderabad: The South Central Railway (SCR) has commissioned a record 148 new three phase electric locomotives during the last financial year, which is the highest-ever number in any year. This is 45 per cent more when compared with the previous best of 102 three phase locomotives commissioned in 2022-23.

The SCR has taken up electrification of rail routes across the zone on a large scale and all the traffic running routes of its network are now electrified, except for the new lines which have been recently constructed lines which are fully or partly under construction.

The three phase electric locomotives being added to the fleet of SCR have considerable advantages over other traction technologies. These locos have high horse power and can easily haul a full-length 22 LHB coach passenger train at 130 kmph without any hassle.

They also offer a high balancing speed even for freight traffic and reduce the transit time for moving cargo, thereby improving the productivity of rolling stocks.

The new locos are also fitted with Head-on-Generation systems (HOG) for powering the coaches which drastically reduce the use of diesel power cars for powering the rakes and thus saves fuel bill.

The improved availability of electric locomotives in the zone facilitated switching over of 46 pairs of coaching trains from diesel to electric traction in the FY 23-24, which will save Rs 204 crore per annum on the fuel bill of the railways and reduce carbon emission.

Residents of Pranahita river bank on the edge due to tusker’s presence

Kumram Bheem Asifabad: Residents on the banks of the Pranahita, not only in Penchikalpet and Bejjur mandals, but also in several parts of Gadchiroli district of neighboring Maharashtra are in a grip of fear with the rogue wild elephant sighted on a hillock near Murliguda in Penchikalpet mandal on Friday.

The elephant was initially spotted at Palleprakriti Vanam on the outskirts of Kammargaon village in Penchikalpet mandal earlier in the day. It then reached Musalamma gutta near Murliguda, a bordering village on the banks of Pranahita river which forms the eastern boundary of Telangana with Maharashtra, forest officials confirmed.

In a video released by the forest department, the wild tusker was seen crossing a road near the hillock, while an auto-rickshaw was parked on the stretch. “The auto-rickshaw driver and passengers were safe. The elephant seemed to be calm at the time of crossing the road. Field staffers are tracking the movement of the elephant,” Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Mohan Chandra Pargaien said.

Since the border of Maharashtra is barely 8 km from Kammergaon, the forest officials expected that the elephant might go to Maharashtra shortly.

Similarly, Devalamarri, Aheri, Katepalli, Watra S, Watra K, Modumtura, Indaram S and many other villages of Gadchiroli district on the other side of Pranahita river were also on the edge after local officials warned that the elephant might reenter Maharashtra at any point of time. Incidentally, four persons were trampled to death by elephants in Gadchiroli district from September to December of 2023 alone, as per officials of the forest department.
