Did Dhoni's Hat-Trick Of Sixes Come At A Cost? Video Leaves Fans Worried

MS Dhoni in action for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2024© X (formerly Twitter)

MS Dhoni left both fans and experts completely spellbound as the Chennai Super Kings batter slammed Hardik Pandya for three back-to-back sixes during the IPL 2024 match against Mumbai Indians on Sunday. The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai was witness to a trademark Dhoni knock that saw the veteran wicket-keeper batter score 20 runs in just 4 balls at an astonishing strike rate of 500. At 42 years old, Dhoni has vastly limited himself to a finisher’s role for his franchise and his knock was instrumental in taking the total beyond the 200-run mark. However, it looked like the knock came at some cost as Dhoni was seen limping with padding around his knee in a video posted on social media.

Dhoni was suffering from a knee injury during IPL 2023 and the veteran wicket-keeper batter underwent a surgery just after the competition.

CSK bowling consultant Eric Simmons earlier said that Dhoni has been struggling with his knee injury but he has decided to bat bravely for the sake of the team.

“Everyone else is more interested in his injuries than he is. He’s one of the hardest men I’ve ever come across. I don’t even think we know to what extent he may or may not be in pain. He just carries on and does his thing,” Simmons said after CSK’s win over MI.

“I’m sure there’s some niggles. He just has that ability to ignore what it is and do what needs to be done. We’re more concerned about his injuries. When I say we, I mean the public (which) is more concerned about his injuries than he is,” he added.

Coming to the match, Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians by 20 runs despite Rohit Sharma scoring a brilliant century in front of his home crowd.

UK To Criminalise Creation Of Sexually Explicit Deepfakes

UK To Criminalise Creation Of Sexually Explicit Deepfakes

The new law has further tightened the punishment for abusing deepfakes

The UK government said that it will be criminalising the creation of sexually explicit “deepfakes” – images or videos which are manipulated using Artificial Intelligence or AI to look like someone without their consent.

People convicted of creating such deepfakes without consent, even if they don’t intend to share the images, will face prosecution. And, if the image is shared widely, the creators could be jailed.

The new offence will be introduced through an amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill, which is currently making its way through parliament.

Laura Farris, the Minister for Victims and Safeguarding, said that it would send a “crystal clear message that creating deepfakes is immoral, often misogynistic, and a crime”.

This law seeks to widen the scope of legal protection against cyber sexual exploitation in the UK. Earlier, in November 2022, an amendment to the Online Safety Bill introduced that non-consensual sharing of deepfakes will be considered a criminal offence, especially for first-time offenders, and they might face jail time. This was in response to growing global concerns around the abuse of new technology, often pornographic in nature.

The new law has further tightened the punishment for abusing deepfakes, by criminalising their creation even if they are not shared.

“The purpose of deepfakes is often to cause alarm, humiliation, or distress to the victims and thus should be severely dealt with. It is another example of ways in which certain people seek to degrade and dehumanise others – especially women,” Laura Farris said.

The prevalence of a jurisdiction like this cannot be undermined, as it impacts a diverse range of parties, especially public figures. In March 2024, an analysis of the five most visited deepfake websites by Channel 4 News found that almost 4000 famous individuals had pornographic deepfakes on these websites, out of which 255 were British.

“It has the capacity to cause catastrophic consequences if the material is shared more widely. This government will not tolerate it,” the minister said.

As AI technology becomes increasingly sophisticated and easily accessible, regulations like this are a progressive step towards safeguarding individuals, especially women, in online spaces.

UK PM Rishi Sunak faces resistance over his smoking ban plans

London: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faces very vocal resistance against his plans to effectively ban smoking for anyone aged 15 and younger as a new bill comes up for a vote in the House of Commons on Tuesday.

The British Indian leader proposed the Tobacco and Vapes Bill last year and declared his vision for creating a “smokefree generation” by making it an offence to sell tobacco products to anyone born after January 1, 2009, which covers children aged 15.

Once it clears its parliamentary journey, the new legislation will introduce some of the world’s strictest anti-smoking laws in the country. “I propose that in future we raise the smoking age by one year, every year.

That means a 14-year-old today will never legally be sold a cigarette and that they — and their generation — can grow up smoke-free. We know this works,” Sunak had declared at the Conservative Party conference in October last year.

As there is Opposition backing for the bill in Parliament and governing Conservative MPs have a free vote on the bill, any Tory votes against the bill will not be seen as a full-blown rebellion against the Prime Minister.

But two of Sunak’s immediate predecessors, Liz Truss and Boris Johnson, have been leading a very vocal group of Tories who plan to vote against the bill as “un-Conservative” and taking away choice from the public.

“The truth is that there is no safe level of tobacco consumption. It is uniquely harmful, and that is why we are taking this important action today to protect the next generation,” said UK Health Secretary Victoria Atkins.

“This Bill will save thousands of lives, ease the strain on our NHS [National Health Service], and improve the UK’s productivity,” she said.

Under the new law, smoking itself would not be criminalised, and anyone who can legally buy tobacco will not be prevented from doing so.

The ban aims to stop people from smoking even before they start as the government pointed to its highly addictive nature, with four in five smokers picking it up before the age of 20, remaining addicted for life.

If passed, the bill will progress to the next stage, bringing the UK closer to creating the first smoke-free generation, the government says.

Under the plans, trading standards officers would get new powers to issue on-the-spot 100-pound fines to shops selling tobacco or vapes to children, with all the money raised going towards further enforcement.

“This historic legislation will consign smoking to the ‘ash heap of history’,” said Deborah Arnott, head of the charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH).

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill would also give the government new powers to tackle youth vaping by restricting flavours and regulating the way that vapes are sold and packaged to make them less appealing to children.

The UK’s Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said while vaping can play a useful role in helping adult smokers to quit, non-smokers and children should never vape. The long-term health impacts of vaping are unknown, and the nicotine contained within them can be highly addictive, it warned.

According to official figures, responsible for around 80,000 deaths annually, smoking is the UK’s single biggest preventable killer and costs the NHS and economy an estimated GBP 17 billion a year — more than the GBP 10 billion annual revenue from tobacco taxation.
