'Israel Fighting Hamas Without Mercy': PM Netanyahu To New Army Recruits

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told new army recruits on Tuesday that Israel is fighting Hamas “without mercy”, according to a statement from his office.

Israel has kept up its bombing campaign in Gaza since Hamas’s October 7 attack and the coastal territory has been largely devastated by the war and the siege on its 2.4 million people.

Global concern has spiralled over Israel’s conduct, the huge civilian death toll and the dire humanitarian crisis.

“You are joining the IDF (army), the splendid combat positions, to repel a brutal enemy… We are striking them back without mercy and we will defeat them,” Netanyahu said.

His comments came after Iran launched its first ever direct attack on Israel last weekend, sharply heightening Middle East tensions.

Netanyahu told the recruits that fighting Hamas was “part of a greater campaign”.

“Iran stands behind Hamas, behind Hezbollah and others, but we are determined to win there, and to defend ourselves in all sectors.”

The Hamas attack that triggered the war resulted in the deaths of 1,170 people in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed at least 33,843 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.

Israel says 260 soldiers have died in Gaza since the start of the war.

Don’t vote for the corrupt Congress party: Nirmala Sitharaman

Jaipur: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday urged the voters of Rajasthan not to support the Congress party as it is ‘corrupt’.

She stressed the importance of re-electing PM Narendra Modi for the state’s progress.

“Don’t come back, this was the slogan by the people of the state that’s why their government lost power… I request all the voters of the state that don’t vote for the corrupt Congress party… PM Modi has to be made the PM again for the development of the state,” she said at a press conference in Jaipur.

She accused the Congress party of raising public issues, only to forget them once in power.

“Only to make promises for elections, mislead the public, get votes and then forget about it, the Congress party is an expert in this matter… Talking to the public, raising their issues, and after raising them, sitting in power and then forgetting (people issues), this is the attitude of Congress, not ours,” she said.

In 2014 BJP won all 25 parliamentary seats in the state. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, BJP won 24 out of 25 seats in the state, while Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) secured the remaining one seat.

Bypolls for 26 Assembly seats in the state will also be held alongside the Lok Sabha elections. Nearly 96.8 crore people are eligible to cast their votes in the upcoming general elections at over 12 lakh polling stations.

The 25 parliamentary constituencies of Rajasthan will go to the polls in two phases.

In Phase 1 of polling in the state on April 19, which is also the opening phase of the seven-phased elections, voting will be conducted for 12 seats. The remaining 13 seats in the state will be contested in the second phase on April 26.

Raeisi describes Lebanon as main pillar of Resistance

“Al-Aqsa Storm operation was a strategic failure for the Zionist regime, and more than the military failure, it has also been a security defeate for the regime, which has resulted in changing the equations in the region in favor of the Palestinian cause,” President Raeisi said in a meeting with Sheikh Ali Al-Khatib, Vice President of the Supreme Islamic Assembly of Shiites of Lebanon.

“Unity has been created today among the Islamic Ummah and beyond that in the public opinion of the world. Also, the resentment towards the Zionist regime that has spread to America, the West and in entire world is unprecedented like never before,” Raeisi also said.

He went on to stress that if the Zionist Israeli regime makes the slightest mistake, “the Zionists and their backers will realize the meaning of Iran’s real and large-scale response.”

In the meeting, Sheikh Al-Khatib, for his part, said that, “Despite all efforts on the part of the enemies, the people of Lebanon are friendly and supportive of the resistance.”

He thanked and praised Iran for its strong response to the Zionist regime.

“No other country has been able to stand so powerfully against a regime that has the support of all world powers,” the senior Lebanese cleric said.

Top Maoist Leader Among At Least 12 Killed In Big Chhattisgarh Encounter

New Delhi:

A top Maoist leader – Shankar Rao – was among 12 rebel fighter killed by security forces during an encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district Tuesday, senior police officer Kalyan Elesela has told NDTV. The police have said they expect the number of dead Maoists to increase.

A huge quantity of weapons, including four Ak-47 assault rifles, were recovered. The Maoist leader shot dead – Rao – had a bounty of Rs 25 lakh on his head, NDTV has been told.

Sources said the fighting began past 1:30 PM and is between a joint op of the District Reserve Guard, which was set up in in 2008 to combat Maoist activities in the state, and the Border Security Force.

There was another encounter in the district last month, in which two people – a Maoist and a cop – were killed, and security forces recovered a gun, some explosives, and other incriminating materials.

Personnel from the DRG and Bastar Fighters, both units of the state police force, with the Border Security Force, were involved in that operation, officials told news agency PTI. The patrolling team was cordoning off a forested area when fired on indiscriminately, leading to the gun battle.

In February, three Maoists were killed in another encounter in Kanker.

In November last year, while the state was voting in the first phase of an Assembly election, a gunfight broke out between security forces and Maoist rebels in the same district.

Equity investors become poorer by Rs 7.93 lakh cr in three days

New Delhi: Investors’ wealth tumbled Rs 7.93 lakh crore in three days of market crash amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and weak global trends. Continuing its downtrend for the third day running on Tuesday, the 30-share BSE Sensex tanked 456.10 points or 0.62 per cent to settle at 72,943.68.

During the day, it slumped 714.75 points or 0.97 per cent to 72,685.03.

The market capitalisation (mcap) of BSE-listed companies was eroded by Rs 7,93,529.61 crore to Rs 3,94,25,823.46 (USD 4.75 trillion) in three days.

In the past three days, the BSE benchmark tanked 2,094.47 points or 2.79 per cent. “Markets extended their losing streak for a third straight session on the back of weak global cues as a sharp rise in US bond yields due to rising Middle East tensions has made equity markets less attractive and prompted investors to resort to profit-taking.

“Investors are fearing that the ongoing conflict could fuel buoyancy in crude oil prices and in turn weigh on inflation,” Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research) at Mehta Equities Ltd, said.

From the Sensex basket, Infosys, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Wipro, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Bajaj Finance, Tata Consultancy Services and Larsen & Toubro were the major laggards.

Titan Company, Hindustan Unilever, HDFC Bank, Maruti, Power Grid, Reliance Industries and ITC were the gainers. In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong settled lower. European markets were quoting in the red. Wall Street ended in negative territory on Monday.

“Escalating tension in the Middle East has turned sentiments sour leading to a rise in crude oil prices. Weak global cues and Rs 11,295 crore selling by FIIs in the last two days hurt domestic markets,” Siddhartha Khemka, Head – Retail Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, said.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 3,268 crore on Monday, according to exchange data. Among the indices, IT declined 2.32 per cent, teck (2.09 per cent), bankex (0.50 per cent), metal (0.36 per cent), capital goods (0.26 per cent) and commodities (0.24 per cent). Energy, consumer discretionary, healthcare, industrials, consumer durables, oil & gas, and power were the gainers.

UN chief says attacks against civilians in Sudan could constitute ‘war crimes’

The photo shows a popular market in Omdurman, Sudan. The market, which used to be crowded with customers and full of commodities, was targeted in the deadly conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres says indiscriminate attacks against civilians in Sudan could amount to “war crimes and crimes against humanity,” as the conflict between the Sudanese army and a rival paramilitary force has entered its second year.

“Indiscriminate attacks that are killing, injuring and terrorizing civilians could amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity,” Guterres told reporters on Monday, while decrying the use of sexual violence against women and girls, and attacks on aid convoys.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has been fighting the army, led by Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, for control of the North African country since April 15 last year in a war that has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced nearly eight million amid warnings of famine.

The UN chief also reiterated his concerns about reports of escalating violence in El-Fasher, the last state capital not under RSF control in the western region of Darfur.

“Over the weekend, RSF-affiliated militias attacked and burnt villages west of the city — leading to widespread new displacement” and fears that the city’s only water source could be overtaken, Guterres said, adding, “Fighting continued today on the outskirts of El-Fasher.”

“Let me be clear:  Any attack on El-Fasher would be devastating for civilians and could lead to full-blown intercommunal conflict across Darfur,” Guterres emphasized.

He warned that such an attack on the major regional hub for humanitarian aid would also upend aid operations in an area “already on the brink of famine.”

That comes as the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that at least 37 percent of Sudan’s 49 million population are facing high levels of acute food insecurity.

"Naam Bade Darshan Chote": Gavaskar Blasts Off Colour RCB Star

Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s season of horror continued on Monday as they slumped to their fifth straight loss in the IPL 2024. This time it happened against SunRisers Hyderabad after conceding a record 287/3 – the most in T20 franchise cricket history. With the loss, RCB’s road to playoffs has become tougher. For the game, RCB dropped two big stars – Mohammed Siraj and Glenn Maxwell. The latter, despite having the reputation of being a big-hitter, has not been able to fire in the IPL 2024.

His scores in the IPL 2024 reads 0, 3, 28, 0, 1  and 0. Ahead of the game vs SRH, Sunil Gavaskar blasted the Australia star.

“He has been unable to play fast bowling, period. Balls bouncing to his chest or shoulder height are troubling him. He can whack every ball below his waist height but not the ones above that,” Sunil Gavaskar was quoted as saying on Star Sports by Hindustan Times.

He went on to explain how Glenn Maxwell would continue to be at the receiving end. “In India, the weather till April 20 favours fast bowling on Indian tracks. And when the pacers will reap success, Maxwell will surely find himself at the receiving end. It is just as we say in Hindi, “Naam Bade Par Darshan Chote,” Gavaskar said.

“And it’s not just Maxwell. Several big-ticket players are finding it difficult to read bowling. So when he gets out in the match, the balls that remain low, he will score against them.”

Talking about the RCB vs SRH game, Travis Head the fourth smashed the fourth fastest IPL ton in 39 deliveries to take his team to 287/3. In reply, Dinesh Karthik played a highly entertaining knock for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, slamming 83 in just 35 deliveries. However, Pat Cummins‘ three-for helped Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 25 runs.

It was a run-fest to remember for all T20 fans as the match produced 549 runs, which is the highest aggregate total for a T20 match.

After the match, Glenn Maxwell announced he is going on a break from IPL.

Congress assurances only to grab votes, says Laxman

Congress assurances only to grab votes, says Laxman

Hyderabad: Accusing Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of deceiving people of Telangana by making false promises, BJP Rajya Sabha member K Laxman alleged that the Chief Minister’s assurance to fulfil poll promises by August 15 was a stunt to garner votes of the people in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Laxman said the Congress had made false promises during the assembly polls to come to power and now was again making false promises to get votes for the Lok Sabha polls.

Stating that the Congress was postponing the implementation of six guarantees in the name of Model Code of Conduct, he said if the party was sincere about fulfilling the promises it would have done it before the MCC came into force. “There was enough time for the government to implement all the promises, but it wantedly delayed it so that MCC could come into force. There is no guarantee that the promises will be implemented by August,”he alleged.

Accusing Congress of cheating farmers, Laxman said the State government had not fulfilled a single promise made to farmers. “Congress promised to waive farm loans up to Rs.2 lakh, provide Rs.15,000 per acre under Rythu Bandhu scheme, Rs.500 bonus per quintal of paddy and Rs.12,000 per month to farm labourers. None of the promises have been fulfilled so far,”he said.
