Why Nirmala Sitharaman Mentioned Chess GM Praggnanandhaa In Budget Speech

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said that the country is proud of youth scaling new heights in sports and noted that India’s number-one ranked player R Praggnanandhaa put up a stiff fight against the reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsson in 2023. Presenting the interim budget in Parliament, Sitharaman noted that India has over 80 chess grandmasters compared to about 20 in 2010. “The country is proud of our youth scaling new heights in sports. The highest ever medal tally in Asian Games and Asian Para Games in 2023 reflects a high confidence level,” she said.

“Chess prodigy and our number-one ranked player Praggnanandhaa put up a stiff fight against the reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsson in 2023. Today, India has over 80 chess grandmasters compared to little over 20 in 2010,” she added.

Last month the 18-year-old defeated China’s Liren with the black pieces at the 2024 Tata Steel Chess Tournament and surpassed the legendary Viswanathan Anand to attain number ranking in India.

Praggnanandhaa, who started playing at the tender age of 5, went on to become India’s youngest and the then world’s second-youngest Grandmaster at age 12 in 2018.

Praggnanandhaa is the fifth-youngest person ever to achieve the title of Grandmaster after Abhimanyu Mishra, Sergey Karjakin, Gukesh D and Javokhir Sindarov. Incidentally, his elder sister R Vaishali is also a Grandmaster, which makes the siblings the world’s first-ever brother-sister GM duo.

Following the 18-year-old’s impressive performance as runner-up in the 2023 FIDE World Cup, Praggnanandhaa rose in player rankings. Though he eventually lost, Praggnanandhaa impressed with his abilities.

India won record tallies in Asian and Asian Para Games last year. Indian athletes brought home 111 medals at the Asian Para Games. The country’s previous best was 72 medals in the 2018 event in Indonesia. India concluded their campaign at the Para multi-sport event in fifth place on the medal tally.

India finished their Asian Games campaign at Hangzhou in China with a record haul of 107 medals – 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze.

Govt will encourage vaccination for girls to prevent cervical cancer: Nirmala Sitharaman

New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her interim budget speech on Thursday, said that the government will encourage vaccination for girls in the age group of 9 to 14 years for the prevention of cervical cancer.

“Our government will encourage vaccination for girls in the age group of 9-14 years to prevent cervical cancer,” Sitharaman said while presenting the interim budget 2024 in the Lok Sabha.

Sitharaman emphasised the government’s plans to set up more medical colleges and said that the government aims to serve the people through improved healthcare services.

“Several youth are ambitious to get qualified as doctors. They aim to serve our people through improved healthcare services. Our government plans to set up more medical colleges by utilising the existing hospital infrastructure under various departments. A committee for this purpose will be set up to examine the issues and make relevant recommendations,” she added.

The Finance Minister further said that the health coverage under the Ayushman Bharat scheme will be extended to all ASHA and Anganwadi workers and helpers.

Noting that various schemes for maternal and child care will be brought under one comprehensive programme for synergy in implementation, she said, “Upgradation of anganwadi centres under “Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0″ will be expedited for improved nutrition delivery, early childhood care and development.” “The newly designed U-WIN platform for managing immunization and intensified efforts of Mission Indradhanush will be rolled out expeditiously throughout the country,” she added.

The ‘Ayushman Bhav’ initiative is envisaged to saturate all health care services in every village or town in line with the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure reach to the last mile and enable access to health care services for everyone in society.

‘Ayushman Bhav’ initiative involves a set of interventions that include ‘Ayushman – Apke Dwar 3.0’, ‘Ayushman Sabhas’, ‘Ayushman Melas-at Health and Wellness Level and Medical Camps by Medical Colleges at CHCs’, and eventually ensuring Gram/Nagar Panchayat or Urban Ward to attain the status of ‘Ayushman Panchayat’ or ‘Ayushman Urban Ward’ in saturation mode.

UN chief calls ICJ decisions binding, urges intl. compliance

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres says decisions of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) are binding, after the top court last week ordered all states to cease funding and facilitating Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

“Int’l humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality [and] precautions in attack, must always be upheld,” Guterres said in his recent post on X platform on Thursday.

No party to an armed conflict is above international law.

Int’l humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality & precautions in attack, must always be upheld.

And the binding decisions of the International Court of Justice must be complied with.

“No party to an armed conflict is above international law,” he said, adding that “the binding decisions of the International Court of Justice must be complied with.”

The ICJ last week called on Israel to prevent genocidal acts in its ongoing war in Gaza but stopped short of ordering a ceasefire. It also ordered the regime to ensure humanitarian assistance reaches the population in Gaza.

The order by the UN’s top court was part of its interim ruling on the emergency measures requested by South Africa in its genocide case against Israel over its war on the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, a group of UN experts in a statement released on Wednesday praised the ICJ’s order, saying that it is a “significant milestone in the decades-long struggle for justice by the Palestinian people.”

“The court order is urgently needed to protect the very existence of the Palestinian people from potentially genocidal actions the Court has ordered Israel to halt and prevent,” the statement said.

The experts said the ruling, in which the court ordered Israel to commit to preventing genocide in Gaza, “tilts the balance toward a global order based on justice and international law.”

Nothing can justify collective punishment of people in Gaza

Guterres said in his recent remarks on Tuesday that “nothing can justify the collective punishment of the people in Gaza,” adding that the death, destruction, displacement, hunger, loss, and grief in Gaza over the past 120 days are a scar on the world’s shared humanity and conscience.

The UN chief stated that the ongoing conflict and relentless bombardment by Israeli forces across Gaza have resulted in civilians being killed and destruction “at a pace and scale unlike anything we have witnessed in recent years.”

Once more, Guterres warned that the humanitarian system in Gaza is collapsing, as over two million people living in Gaza are facing inhumane conditions, as they struggle to survive without any of the basics.

The remarks come as nine Western countries, including the United States, have stopped their funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), due to false allegations.

Guterres has called UNRWA’s aid as “the backbone of all humanitarian response in Gaza.”

Since the onset of the Gaza war, the Tel Aviv regime has killed more than 26,900 people, mostly women and children, and wounded 65,949 others.

Italy Beautician Claims She Is Heir To Lamborghini: "Don't Want Money"

Woman Claims She Is The Secret Granddaughter Of Lamborghini Founder, Has DNA Proof

Flavia Borzone, from Naples, has filed a lawsuit in a court in Italy.

A woman in Italy has claimed that she is the secret granddaughter of the founder of Lamborghini sports car. Flavia Borzone, who works as a beautician in Naples, also said that she has the DNA evidence to prove it, after she tested his daughter Elettra’s saliva, according to a report in The Telegraph. Ms Borzone said she hired a private detective to retrieve a drinking straw used by Elettra, a singer, to prove that they are sisters, the outlet further said.

The details emerged from a court case filed in Bologna on Monday.

In the lawsuit, she claimed the DNA sample was tested at the University of Ferrara, where experts said the genetic sample proved Borzone and Elettra were related.

The 35-year-old also alleged that Tonino Lamborghini, whose father created the luxury car business in 1963, and her mother Rosalba Colossimo met at a bus stop in 1980.

Mr Lamborghini was allegedly driving a car and noticed the young woman was waiting for a bus and stopped to offer her a lift. The two then allegedly struck up a relationship, which ended with Ms Borzone being born in 1988.

“I don’t want to offend anyone, I just want to know whose daughter I am,” Ms Borzone told the court, as per The Telegraph report.

However, Mr Lamborghini has denied that Ms Borzone is his daughter and sued her and her mother for defamation after she went public with her findings, the outlet further said.

But her lawyer claimed Mr Lamborghini had “admitted to having a relationship with Colossimo” in a conversation recorded by Ms Ms Borzone, and that her real name – Clelia – was a tribute to her mother.

Ms Borzone was not pursuing the case for financial reasons, her mother said. “My daughter doesn’t want money, she just wants the truth. If it had been all about the money, I would have done all this when Flavia was two years old,” Ms Colosimo told The Telegraph.

The trial was adjourned till March.

Direct tax demand up to Rs 25,000 and Rs 10,000 will be scrapped till a certain period

New Delhi:

The Centre will not pursue taxpayers to recover old and disputed direct taxes up to Rs 25,000 till the financial year 2009-10, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in her interim Budget 2024 speech today.

Direct taxes demand up to Rs 10,000 from the financial years 2010-11 to 2014-15 will also be withdrawn, she said.

“This will benefit about one crore taxpayers,” Ms Sitharaman said.

“… There are a large number of petty, non-verified, non-reconciled or disputed direct tax demands, many of them dating as far back as 1962, which continue to remain on the books, causing anxiety to honest taxpayers and hindering refunds of subsequent years. I propose to withdraw such outstanding direct tax demands up Rs 25,000 pertaining to the period up to financial year 2009-10, and up to Rs 10,000 for financial years 2010-11 to 2014-15. This is expected to benefit about a crore taxpayers,” Ms Sitharaman said.

She did not make changes to tax slabs in the interim Budget in keeping with convention.

“As for tax proposals, in keeping with the convention, I do not propose to make any changes relating to taxation and propose to retain the same tax rates for direct taxes and indirect taxes including import duties,” she said.

“However, certain tax benefits to start-ups and investments made by sovereign wealth or pension funds as also tax exemption on certain income of some IFSC units are expiring on 31.03.2024. To provide continuity in taxation, I propose to extend the date to 31.03.2025,” Ms Sitharaman said.
