Man-wildlife conflict escalates in erswthile Medak

Medak: The frequency in instances of man-animal conflict is on the rise in several parts of the erstwhile Medak district.

A spotted deer died when it was hit by an unidentified vehicle at Mambapur village in Gummadidala mandal on January 30. In a similar incident, a black buck was killed in a road mishap in Regode mandal of Medak district on January 12. Several wild animals have been killed in road accidents round the year as roads were laid through forest areas at several places. Since the population of wild boars have increased, wild boars have been crossing the roads in packs, which has resulted in accidents at several places.

Recently, a woman died as the car she was traveling in hit a pack of wild boars that were crossing a busy road in the Narsapur forest area. While the woman Gunabai (52) died on the spot, her son Shiva Kumar, who was driving the car, suffered serious injuries.

Meanwhile, leopards, hyenas and other animals were venturing out of the forest area in search of food quite frequently. Due to the lack of a sufficient prey base in the forest area, there have been instances of leopards and hyenas attacking domestic animals in villages located on the fringes of the forest.

A hyena ventured out of the forest and killed a calf at Salabathpur village in Kowdipally mandal on January 21. The owner of the calf Chakali Srisraim found the half-eaten carcass the following morning a few metres away from his cattle shed. Initially, farmers thought it was a leopard attack. However, Forest officials confirmed it was a hyena after checking the pug marks. During the same period, Forest officials, who placed camera traps as farmers saw a leopard in Ramayampet and Chegunta mandals, captured the movement of leopards in camera traps. After getting the pictures, Forest Officer Vidyasagar put farmers of Ibrahimpur, Kistapur, Chittojipally, Rukmapur, Rampur and Kanyaram on alert.

Ramayampet, Chegunta and Chinna Shankarampet mandals in Medak district have a history of leopards killing domestic animals. Animal Warriors Conservation Society (AWCS) founder Pradeep Nair said the State government should involve locals to protect the wild animals besides ensuring an increase in the prey base in the forest.

No Tax Cuts, No Big Announcements: Budget 2024 Is BJP's Confidence Message

No Tax Cuts, No Big Announcements: Budget 2024 Is BJP's Confidence Message

Nirmala Sitharaman presented the interim budget in Parliament today

New Delhi:

The lack of big ticket announcements or any tax relief in the interim budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman underlined the ruling BJP’s confidence ahead of the national election. The government will present a detailed roadmap to pursue its goal of Viksit Bharat in its full budget in July, the minister said.

The tone was set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday. Addressing the media at the start of the Budget session, the Prime Minister said, “Just before the election, we don’t submit a full budget, this we will do after a new government is elected. This interim budget is a guideline for us. I am hopeful that the country will touch new heights of prosperity. Development for everyone is taking place. This journey will continue with your blessings. Ram Ram.”

Though this is not a full budget, taxpayers had hoped for some relief in an election year. There was buzz on the possibility of the government revising the cap on investment exempted from Income Tax. Some Opposition leaders had also expected the government to make populist announcements with its eye on the elections. But what was presented was a statement of confidence and a plan to keep the big announcements for later.

Ms Sitharaman said she had decided to not make any taxation changes in keeping with the convention in interim budgets.

The BJP welcomed the budget. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said it “draws the roadmap” to achieve Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a Developed Bharat by 2047. External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar said the budget “captures a decade of transformation, while laying out a vision of further development”.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekar told news agency ANI that it is an “excellent summary of the qualitative and quantitative transformation of the Indian economy in the last 10 years”. Union Minister and BJP veteran Nitin Gadkari said “this is a budget to speed up country’s development and increase employment”.

Opposition leaders said there was hardly anything in the offing.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said this is the “farewell budget” of the BJP. “A budget is useless if it is not for development or for the people. The BJP government has achieved a shameful record by completing a decade of anti-people budgets. This record will never be broken because the time of a progressive government has come,” he said in a post on X.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said this was one of the shortest Budget speeches on record. “Not very much came out of it. As usual, a lot of rhetorical language, very little concrete on implementation. She talked about foreign investment without acknowledging that that investment has come down significantly. She talked about a number of things which are couched in vague language like ‘confidence’ and ‘hope’ and so on. But when it comes to hard figures, very few figures available,” he said.

The BJP’s confidence in a Lok Sabha poll victory, reflected in the minister’s budget speech, is not without reason.

With just months left for the big poll contest, the Opposition’s INDIA bloc is still struggling to put its house in order. Seat-sharing talks have hit roadblocks in Bengal and Punjab. In Uttar Pradesh too, the Samajwadi Party has announced some candidates, saying that it does not require Congress’s clearance. In Bihar, the exit of Nitish Kumar-led JDU has dealt a big blow to the Opposition bloc. In Kerala, another Opposition stronghold, there is no sign of a united fight either.

Nalgonda: Prices of fine rice varieties are shooting through the roof, touching an average of Rs.6,000 per quintal after a hike of about Rs.1,000 per quintal.

The budgets of a majority of the people, who use Sona Masoori rice, have been hit, with the prices of the variety rising to Rs.6,000 from Rs.5,000 per quintal. The price of other fine rice varieties too has gone up to Rs.6,500 per quintal in the market.

The dip in the cultivation area of paddy of fine rice varieties is said to have triggered the hike of the prices in the market. The farmers are not showing interest to take up cultivation of paddy of fine rice varieties due to requirements for high investment and irrigation facilities.

The normal area of cultivation of paddy was 3,51,000 acres in Suryapet district, 4,40,000 acres in Nalgonda district and 1,59,719 acres in Yadadri-Bhongir district. However, with a crop holiday being declared after a gap of nearly 10 years under the left canal of Nagarjuna Sagar Project (NSP) and depletion of groundwater levels, the cultivation of paddy in erstwhile Nalgonda district has decreased by almost 50 percent.

So far, the farmers taken up cultivation of paddy in 6,03,730 acres in the erstwhile district, which would make up only 59.3 percent of the usual cultivation area. This gap is likely to lead to a further increase in the prices of fine rice in the market in the next five or six months.

A regular buyer of fine rice, M Saidaiah, said the hike in prices of fine rice had become a financial burden on middle class families. It was not possible to avoid or reduce the consumption of rice. His family, which had six members, was spending nearly Rs.3,000 or more per month for rice alone. It had almost doubled the “kitchen” expenditure of the family, he said.

“If we purchase the rice loose, i.e, in 5 kg or similar packets, the price will be Rs.3 to Rs.5 more per kg,” he added.

R Srinivasulu of Venkateshwara Rice Shop said the prices were due to multiple reasons, including decrease in rice production and also because millers were exporting rice to other States. However, the price hike did not have an impact on the sale of rice since it was an unavoidable essential commodity, he said.

Hours after court orders, prayers performed in cellar of Gyanvapi mosque

Official sources in the district administration said at around 9.30 pm on Wednesday, the members of the Kashi-Vishwanath temple trust were called and the barricades before the Nandi statue facing the mosque’s ‘wazukhana’ were removed.

Hours after court orders, prayers performed in cellar of Gyanvapi mosque

Varanasi: Prayers were performed in a cellar of the Gyanvapi mosque here on Wednesday night following court orders allowing the resumption of a practice set to have being discontinued three decades back, Kashi Vishwanath temple trust president said.

Earlier on Wednesday, the district court ruled that a priest can perform prayers before the idols in a cellar of the Gyanvapi Masjid, a significant development in the legal battle over the mosque adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath temple.

“Vyas ji’s cellar was opened after 31 years for prayers,” temple trust president Nagendra Pandey told PTI.

He said the southern cellar was opened at around 10.30 pm on Wednesday.

Asked if prayers were performed in the basement, he said, “Yes.” “It was necessary to follow the court’s orders, so the district administration made all the arrangements with great promptness,” Pandey added.

District Magistrate S Rajlingam said, “I have complied with the court’s order.” Some locals claimed that after cleaning the cellar, an ‘aarti’ of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh was performed.

Official sources in the district administration said at around 9.30 pm on Wednesday, the members of the Kashi-Vishwanath temple trust were called and the barricades before the Nandi statue facing the mosque’s ‘wazukhana’ were removed.

The court had directed the local administration to make arrangements within seven days for prayers in the cellar. This will involve “proper arrangements” with metal barricades at the complex, it said.

Taking a swipe at the Yogi Adityanath government in the state, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav said the haste displayed by the BJP in following the court orders is an attempt to prevent any legal recourse.

“Due process has to be maintained while following any court order. The Varanasi Court fixed a 7 day period for it (making arrangements). What we are seeing now is a concerted effort to go beyond the due process and prevent any legal recourse that can be taken,” Yadav said on X.

The order by Judge A K Vishvesha came a day after an Archeological Survey of India (ASI) report on the mosque complex was made public.

The ASI survey, ordered by the same court, in connection with a related case, suggested that the mosque was constructed during Aurangzeb’s rule over the remains of a Hindu temple.

Wednesday’s order was delivered on the plea of Shailendra Kumar Pathak who claimed that his maternal grandfather, priest Somnath Vyas, offered prayers till December 1993, according to Hindu side counsel Madan Mohan Yadav.

Pathak said the puja was stopped during the tenure of former chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav after the Babri Mosque in Ayodhya was demolished on December 6, 1992.

During the hearing, the Muslim sides disputed the petitioner’s version. It said no idols existed in the cellar so there was no question of prayers being offered there till 1993.

In an earlier order on January 17, the Varanasi court had directed that the district magistrate should take charge of the cellar. But it had not then given any directions on the right to offer prayers there.

Mumtaz Ahmed, who represented the Muslim side, said, “The district judge today gave its final verdict by giving the right of worship to Hindus. We will now go to the High Court against this decision.”

Iran condemns US decision to renew Venezuela sanctions

A few days after Venezuela’s Supreme Court announced that it would ban an opposition candidate from running in the elections, the US government threatened to reimpose sanctions on the country’s oil industry.

“Resorting to such actions is a direct interference in the internal affairs of countries and a violation of the United Nations Charter, and its continuation will increase the will and cooperation of independent countries to resist such meddling policies,” the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said n a statement on Thursday.

Kan’ani emphasized that Washington’s using of sanctions as a weapon against other countries is against the rights of governments and nations, human rights and international law standards.

Looking at how England went about in 1st game; practising some sweep shots: KS Bharat

Looking at how England went about in 1st game; practising some sweep shots: KS Bharat

Visakhapatnam: With India 1-0 behind in the five-game Test series against England, wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat said the hosts’ have taken a cue from the visitors’ batting approach in the series opener at Hyderabad and have been making an effort to focus on sweep shots ahead of the second match at the ACA-VDCA Stadium starting on Friday.

England secured a thrilling 28-run win over India in the series opener at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad last week, on the back of vice-captain Ollie Pope’s magnificent 196 and debutant spinner Tom Hartley’s 7-62 helping them emerge victorious from a situation of conceding a 190-run lead.

In that game, England relied heavily on sweep and reverse-sweep as run-making options, something which the Indian batters have been practising at in their nets session in Visakhapatnam.

“In our team meetings we spoke about the things we could have done better and yes, we certainly have few plans (for this Test match). (We are) definitely looking at the way how they went about the first game, playing some reverse (sweeps). That’s something we have definitely worked on.

“Playing in India, we play a lot of cricket on these tracks. It’s not that we don’t know how to sweep, reverse sweep or paddle-sweep, but on that particular day depending on the situation of the team, we as batters take our calls. It is very clear to us to bat with freedom.

“We have also practiced the reverse sweeps before the first game as well. But while playing out in the centre, it is the batters’ individual plan. If the team demands us to play in a certain way then we are up to it. But individually we have separate set plans and looking to do well as a batting unit in this game,” said Bharat in the pre-match press conference.

Asked about any doubts in the dressing room post the loss to England, Bharat denied any such claims. “After the game, the atmosphere (in the team) is absolutely relaxed. They asked us not to panic. The instruction is very clear that it’s a long Test series and we have played such series in the past.

“We as individuals have to focus on good things. Things that we want to try, which we want to implement. We just want to play good cricket. That’s the message from the captain and the coach,” he said.

India will be playing the second Test minus injured duo of KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, along with Virat Kohli still on leave for personal reasons, meaning either of Rajat Patidar or Sarfaraz Khan could be handed a debut. Bharat admitted the trio’s absence leaves India short on experience, but pointed towards the team eager to learn from the mistakes in Hyderabad.

“Their experience definitely counts, but if you look at youngsters like us, we have played a lot of domestic cricket and we have played a lot of cricket. It’s unfortunate for them to miss, but then our bench strength is always ready for a challenge on these kinds of tracks. The guys walking in, I am sure they will definitely do well and take it forward.

“They (England) played really good shots (at Hyderabad). Credit goes to them, as they are allowed to play good shots. We did everything, like planning happening out in the centre. Rohit bhai was speaking to us, Jadeja was discussing on the lengths, lines, speeds. But then at the end of the day, if someone batted well, you have to give credit to them.

“He (Ollie Pope) really batted us out in the second innings, but it happens. In cricket and in any sport you have to learn, accept and move forward with the learnings, which were there a lot for us and we are definitely taking it forward,” said the wicketkeeper.

Friday’s match will also be Bharat’s first international match at his home ground in Visakhapatnam. Bharat was a ball-boy at the venue when MS Dhoni smashed an unbeaten 148 against Pakistan in an ODI game here in 2005 and began training with the Andhra Pradesh Ranji Trophy team as an 11-year-old.

Bharat was also felicitated by the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) on Thursday, with him being the third India Test-playing cricketer from the state after former chief selector MSK Prasad and veteran batter Hanuma Vihari.

“Playing in front of your home crowd is definitely special. But I am keeping the emotions aside, as I am looking to this as any other Test game which you are playing for your country. There will be a lot of noise when you are playing for your country. There will be good noises, bad noises, but the thing is you will have to be in the present moment.

“For me, it is a moment of pride about playing in front of your home crowd, but if you look at the bigger picture, there is a Test game which is supposed to be played and my whole focus and our whole focus is definitely on that. Yes, it’s an overwhelming feeling, but you have to let it sink and focus on the Test game,” he concluded.
