Iran decries West’s silence after Israel kills over 100 on aid convoy

A screen grab captured from a video shows Israeli forces targeting Palestinians, surrounding humanitarian aid trucks, in Gaza City on February 29, 2024.

Iran has lashed out the US and the Europeans for their silence over the “genocide” in Gaza, after Israeli forces fired on people on an aid convoy in Gaza City and killed more than 100 Palestinians on Thursday.

“More than 100 Palestinian citizens who were waiting in line to receive humanitarian aid on al-Rashid Street in Gaza were martyred, more than 800 people were injured due to the barbaric attack by the Zionist regime,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan’ani wrote on X.

“The wound of Gaza will not be erased from the memory of the free people of the world, and the shame of supporting and remaining silent towards the mass killing and genocide of Palestinians by the criminal Zionist regime will be evident on the foreheads of the false champions of human rights in the United States and  Europe.”

At least 104 Palestinians were killed and hundreds more wounded when Israeli forces fired on the people, the Palestinian health ministry said, calling the incident a “massacre”.

Residents of Gaza City had gathered seeking food, with the area completely cut off from aid by Israeli forces. NGOs and UN experts have voiced fears of famine in northern Gaza and there have been reports of people, including babies, dying of hunger.

The United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA described the food security situation as “extremely critical across Gaza, particularly in northern Gaza.”

According to the World Food Programme (WFP), no humanitarian group had been able to deliver aid to the north for more than a month. The agency accused Israel of blocking access.

The Gaza City shooting adds to a Palestinian death toll from the Israeli war which the health ministry earlier Thursday said had topped 30,000.

It came after mediators said a truce deal between Israel and Hamas could be just days away.

Vedanta Can't Reopen Sterlite Copper Plant, Public Health Important: Court

Vedanta Can't Reopen Sterlite Copper Plant, Public Health Important: Supreme Court

The bench referred to the “repeated nature of breaches” coupled with severity of violations by the unit.

New Delhi:

In a jolt to Vedanta Limited, the Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed its plea for reopening of its copper smelting plant in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi, closed since May 2018 over pollution concerns, while underlining the importance of health and welfare of the local residents.

A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud dismissed Vedanta’s Special Leave Petition (SLP) against the August 18, 2020, verdict of the Madras High Court which had rejected the mining giant’s plea for allowing the Sterlite Copper unit to reopen.

The verdict came days after the Supreme Court proposed to set up a panel of domain experts to inspect the unit and suggest further compliances and the way forward, saying shutting down a plant of “national importance” will not serve anybody’s purpose.

While observing that the closure of the plant was undoubtedly not a matter of first choice, the bench referred to the “repeated nature of breaches” coupled with “severity” of violations by the unit.

“The health and welfare of the residents of the area is again a matter of utmost concern and in the ultimate analysis, the state government is responsible for preserving and protecting their concerns,” said the bench, also comprising justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.

“We have heard these proceedings for several days and after careful evaluation of the factual and legal material, we have come to the conclusion that the Special Leave Petition (SLP) by the industrial unit shall not warrant interference under Article 136 of the Constitution. For the above reasons, the SLP shall stand dismissed,” it said.

The plant has been closed since May 2018 after 13 people were killed as police opened fire to quell a protest over the alleged pollution caused by it.

Reacting to the Supreme Court verdict, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin wrote on ‘X’: “The Supreme Court has delivered a historic verdict upholding the closure of Sterlite in Thoothukudi due to the strong arguments placed by our government which shattered all the contentions of the factory management”.

“This is a victory for the people who continuously opposed the toxic unit and the determined legal struggle of our government. We will protect people from any kind of danger,” he wrote.

The bench observed it was conscious that the unit had been contributing to the productive assets of the nation and generating employment, but the court has to be mindful of the well-settled principles including principles of sustainable development, the polluter-pays principle, and the public trust doctrine.

While referring to the history of the case in which the Supreme Court had passed orders earlier also, the bench noted that the hearing before the high court had spanned 42 days and it had rendered a verdict on all factual and legal aspects.

The bench noted it was of the view that the areas which are a matter of serious concern include the failure of the petitioner at the material time to remove the copper slag which was dumped indiscriminately at almost 11 sites in the vicinity, including private land adjoining a river.

“We are not inclined in the exercise of the jurisdiction under Article 136 of the Constitution to re-appreciate the findings of facts which have been arrived at by the high court,” it said.

Article 136 deals with the Supreme Court’s powers to grant special leave to appeal against any judgment, decree sentence or order in any matter passed by any court or tribunal across the country.

The bench also dismissed a separate plea filed by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) which was aggrieved by some observations made against it by the high court.

Tamil Nadu leaders including PMK founder S Ramadoss, MDMK leader Vaiko and the CPI (M) state unit also welcomed the verdict.

Thoothukudi, formerly known as Tuticorin, is an industrial city in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu.

During the earlier arguments before the Supreme Court, senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for Vedanta, while suggesting the way forward, had said the court may appoint a committee of experts comprising representatives of the ministry of environment, forests and climate change, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, Central Pollution Control Board, IIT, TNPCB, Vedanta and three independent experts.

At least 13 people were killed and many injured on May 22, 2018, when police opened fire on a huge crowd of people protesting against pollution allegedly caused by the copper smelting unit and its proposed expansion.

Subsequently, the Tamil Nadu government and the TNPCB ordered closure of the mining group’s plant over pollution concerns.

"Small Mistake": Tamil Nadu Minister On 'China Flag On Indian Rocket' Ad

'Small Mistake': Tamil Nadu Minister On 'China Flag On Indian Rocket' Ad

Thoothukudi:

A day after his advertisement related to ISRO’s new launch complex in Tamil Nadu caused a row for featuring a ‘Chinese flag’, DMK leader and Fisheries Minister Anitha R Radhakrishnan on Thursday said it was a gaffe by the designer.

The minister stressed that it was only a mistake and they (DMK) had no other intentions.

“A small mistake happened in the advertisement. We have no other intention. We have only love for India in our hearts,” Mr Radhakrishnan said, adding that it is his party’s stand that India should stay united without giving any room for clashes on the grounds of caste or religion.

Mr Radhakrishnan said it was late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi who first voiced the demand for a new launch complex of ISRO at Kulasekarapattinam near here in Tamil Nadu. Also, Chief Minister MK Stalin and Thoothukudi Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi had all along urged the Centre to set up the launch complex in the state, he told reporters.

This is why it was decided to give an advertisement (in dailies) to highlight the efforts made by the DMK leaders to bring the project to Tamil Nadu, the minister said.

Those who designed the advertisement made a gaffe which went unnoticed by them, the Minister said.

BJP leader and Union Minister L Murugan, however, demanded that the DMK apologise to the people for publishing that advertisement.

On the DMK’s stand that the ‘China’ reference was a mistake, Murugan said, “It is our duty to put the Indian flag (in advertisement) and they (DMK) must apologise to the people. Only India’s achievements have to be showcased. The country’s achievements in space technology and the new ISRO complex in Tamil Nadu are the nation’s pride.” On February 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a new launch complex of ISRO at Kulasekarapattinam, which is worth about Rs 986 crore. The complex, which can accommodate 24 launches per year, includes 35 facilities and features mobile launch structures (MLS) with checkout computers marking a significant stride in enhancing space exploration capabilities.

On the concluding day (Feb 28) of his two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, PM Modi strongly criticised the DMK for being “oblivious” to the nation’s achievements in the space sector.

Addressing a BJP rally, PM Modi alleged that the DMK regime does not work, but only takes “false credit” and affixes its ‘stickers’ on Central schemes.

“Now they have crossed the limit. They have pasted the sticker of China to take credit for ISRO launchpad in Tamil Nadu. This is an insult to our space scientists, space sector, your tax money and you (the country),” he said, addressing the people.

In a post on X, the PM had said: “DMK’s advertisement today is hilarious. They have insulted Indian science and the Indian space sector, for which they must apologise.”

Wriddhiman Saha says nothing can be done ”forcefully” after Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan snub

Wriddhiman Saha says nothing can be done ”forcefully” after Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan snub

Kolkata: Veteran India wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha on Thursday said nothing can be done ‘forcefully’ if a cricketer does not want to play domestic cricket, while adding that it is the base and every player should value it enough to prosper.

Saha’s reaction came after Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were on Wednesday excluded from the annual player retainership list for the 2023-24 season, with the BCCI saying in a statement that the two cricketers ‘were not considered for the annual contracts in this round of recommendations’.

“That is BCCI’s decision and personal decision of concerned players. Forcefully, you can’t do anything,” the stumper said about Kishan and Iyer’s axe. These two players were part of the Indian side until very recently, having also featured in the 50-overs World Cup last year.

While Kishan was last part of the Test squad during India’s Tour of South Africa in December, Iyer played the first two Tests of the ongoing series against England. Saha said a cricketer should treat every match with equal importance citing his own example.

“Whenever I am fit I play, even I played club matches, office matches as well. I always treat a match as a match. All matches are equal for me. If every player thinks on those lines, they will only prosper in their career and it will be better for Indian cricket as well,” he said.

“I feel the importance of domestic cricket is always there because if I talk about Sarfaraz Khan, he had scored plenty of runs in the last 4-5 years. Definitely, he has delivered.”

Saha, meanwhile, termed the young wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel’s batting as ‘outstanding’. Jurel scored a gritty 46 on Test debut in the third Test and followed it up with scores of 90 and 39 in the fourth Test at Ranchi, earning himself the player of the match award.

“I have never seen him (Jurel) in domestic cricket, even in Test matches I have seen in him highlights. But his batting is outstanding, he won the last Test for the team,” he said. Saha also feels the future of Indian cricket is bright because of its bench strength while once again underlining the importance of domestic circuit.

“It is always good to see that your reserve bench is ready, whenever somebody is getting chance,” he said. “Over that, some players are getting opportunity but don’t want to play, which they shouldn’t.

Whenever you get a chance to play, you should play whether it is red ball or white ball,” said Saha, who played 40 Tests and scoreed 1,353 runs while affecting 104 dismissals (92 catches and 12 stumpings).
