Ex-RCB Star Alleges Match-Fixing In Kolkata League Cricket. CAB Responds

Wicketkeeper-batter Shreevats Goswami, who was a member of the 2008 Under-19 World Cup-winning team, on Thursday alleged that a match in the Cricket Association of Bengal’s (CAB) first division league seemed fixed from the manner in which some dismissals took place during the game. Goswami shared videos of a game between Mohammedan Sporting and Town Club on his Facebook page. He alleged that Mohammedan Sporting batters seemed to be intentionally getting out to concede seven points to Town Club which is associated with former Team India manager Debabrata Das, who is the current CAB secretary. Das was the Indian tam’s administrative manager during the tour of England in 2022.

“This is a Super Division match in Kolkata Club Cricket, two big teams doing this, any idea what’s going on here??” Goswami posted.

In the first video, a right-handed batter is seen leaving the ball coming straight to his stumps as he then walked off the field.

In the second video, a left-hander came out of the crease to an wide delivery to be stumped.

While Debabrata Das was not available for a reaction, CAB president Snehasish Ganguly said they have sought the umpires’ and observer’s report.

“We have called a tournament committee meeting on March 2 to take up the matter,” Snehasish Ganguly said.

The 34-year-old Goswami called the match a case of ‘got up’ cricket, an informal description for rigged proceedings.

“I am ashamed to see this having played the game which is so close to my heart. I love cricket and I love playing in Bengal but looking at this breaks my heart.

“Club cricket is heart and soul of Bengal cricket please don’t ruin it. I think this is called ‘got up’ cricket. Where is the media now?” Goswami, who also played for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, added.

The three-day match got over at the 22 Yards Academy in Salt Lake with Town Club securing seven points on Wednesday.

Shakib Habib Gandhi’s 223 steered Town Club to 446.

In reply, Mohammaden Sporting made 281/9 with Joyjit Basu top-scoring with a 100. Sporting collapsed after Basu’s departure.

Democracy, human rights in Iran stronger than in UK: FM

AmirAbdollahian made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Britain Channel 4 News.

The top Iranian diplomat underlined, “If a referendum, is to be held in Iran and at the same time in Britain on people’s support of their regime, have no doubt Britain will be the loser.”

In reaction to the claim that 75% of voters will not participate in the upcoming election in Iran and they lost faith in the Iranian government, AmirAbdollahian said, “Firstly, how did you come up with 75% for such a claim? Secondly, since the victory of the Revolution until today, every year we have had at least one free election with the participation of all people in Iran. The third point is that, in Iran, we encourage people to participate. However, we do not impose punitive policies on those who do not participate in the election. While in many Western countries, if a person does not participate in the election, they face temporary social deprivation or even fines.”

He added, “No, your statistics are completely the opposite. We have a high turnout. In our region, Iran is one of the strongest democracies. However, the riots that you mentioned, I addressed in my yesterday’s speech (on the United Nations Human Rights Council). I said, “Ladies and gentlemen, do you remember? Months ago, following the tragic death of a dear Iranian girl, what an uproar it caused in the Human Rights Council? A fact-finding committee was formed. Five months into genocide and massacres of Palestinian women and children in Gaza, by bombs from Western countries; bombs provided by the United States, Britain, and some other countries to Israel, so many women and children are being killed. Why no one in the Human Rights Council thinks of forming a fact-finding committee?”

AmirAbdollahian further noted, “This is the very double standard democracy and human rights that we witness from the West today.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, he stressed that Iran welcomes an end to the genocide in Gaza.

The top Iranian diplomat emphasized, “The Islamic Republic of Iran opposes killing of women, children, and civilian in any part of the world”.

Israel Killed Over 25,000 Palestinians Since Hamas Attack: US Defence Chief

Israel Killed Over 25,000 Palestinians Since Hamas Attack: US Defence Chief

The United States has backed Israel since the unprecedented Hamas attack.

Washington:

Israel has killed more than 25,000 Palestinian women and children since the October 7 attack by militant group Hamas, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said Thursday.

“It’s over 25,000,” Austin told lawmakers when asked during a House Armed Services Committee hearing for the figure on women and children killed.

The United States has backed Israel since the unprecedented Hamas attack in October that resulted in the deaths of around 1,160 people.

Israel responded to the attack with a relentless assault on Gaza that the coastal territory’s health ministry said has left more than 30,000 people dead.

The number provided by Austin is within the same range, and come as Washington pushes for a ceasefire and a reduction in civilian casualties in Gaza.

Garbage takes over Hyderabad lanes

Although there are multiple measures and interventions in place to manage solid waste in the city, none seem to be effective

Hyderabad: From narrow lanes of residential colonies to bustling main roads in the city, the presence of garbage in Hyderabad is unmistakable. Piles of rubbish dot the streets and public spaces, creating an eyesore that city dwellers cannot ignore. Although there are multiple measures and interventions in place to manage solid waste in the city, none seem to be effective.

The lethargic management of waste by authorities coupled with public apathy has become a lethal recipe for persistent garbage vulnerable spots found in every other lane of the city. “I see that GHMC is trying with sweepers and the Swachh autos, but it does not seem to be working. We also need to work on reducing garbage production in the first place,” opines Akansha Velluru, an IT employee, shedding light on the large amounts of waste generated in the city.

While the garbage that is produced in residential and commercial complexes finds its way to the dump yard, waste that comes from activity on city roads often ends up as litter. With a lack of dustbins and the motivation to find one, discarding wrappers, food, papers, or other waste has become a common practice.

Unfortunately, GHMC has failed on multiple counts to tackle this long-standing problem. Along with not being able to eliminate these spots where garbage is thrown every day, little attention is paid to the problems these spaces create.

“Where garbage is dumped, the waste and its smell is not the only problem. It is also a space for mosquitoes and other insects to breed. Dogs are also found there. Men just out and about pass urine there. Eliminating these spaces is important, “ says G Dinesh, a resident of Uppal.

Along with the umpteen problems that come with the lack of action on clearing garbage from roads, piles of waste lying on the roads unattended for days together, paints a disappointing picture of the city that is growing at an exponential pace.

Hyderabad: Sreenidi Deccan Football Club conceded late to drop two points as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Mohammedan Sporting Club in a Matchweek 16 I-League clash here at the Deccan Arena on Thursday.

David Castaneda scored very early on for the Deccan Warriors but his goal was eventually cancelled out by Mohammedan SC substitute Mohammad Jassim as both teams settled for a point each in this top of the table clash.

Sreenidi Deccan made a bright start as they went ahead in the 3rd minute when Castaneda headed in Faysal Shayesteh’s corner but the game went into a lull after that. Neither team could create clear chances as Sreenidi Deccan shut up shop and Mohammedan SC were unable to break them down.

The second half picked up from where the first ended as the midfield battle intensified. Sreenidi Deccan substitutes Ibrahim Sissoko and William Alves tried to make things happen but were unable to double their team’s lead. The Deccan Warriors’ inability to put the game to bed came back to haunt them as Mohammedan equalised through Jassim’s long range strike in the 82nd minute.

After 16 games, Sreenidi Deccan remain in second place with 33 points while Mohammedan are at the top of the table with 35 points. The Deccan Warriors will play Real Kashmir in their next game at the Deccan Arena on March 4.

House Demolished, Tunnel Rescue Hero's Daughter Misses Exam: Family

House Demolished, Tunnel Rescue Hero's Daughter Misses Class 10 Exam: Family

Wakeel Hassan was involved in the rescue of 41 labourers from a tunnel in Uttarakhand last year.

New Delhi:

A teenage daughter of rat-hole mining expert Wakeel Hasan, who was involved in rescuing 41 labourers who got trapped in an under-construction tunnel in Uttarakhand last year, missed her exam on Thursday due to the chaos caused by the demolition of their house, her family members claimed.

The belongings of the family, including the notes, books and school uniform of Hasan’s daughter Aliza, were buried under the debris of the family’s small house in Sri Ram Colony that was demolished as “encroachment” by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Wednesday.

Aliza, a Class-10 student of the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), could not appear in her home science exam due to the chaos prevailing after the demolition of the house, her family members claimed.

“On the day of her exam, my daughter is standing on the road. Her books, school dress, notes — everything is scattered somewhere under the debris,” Hasan’s wife, Sabana, told PTI.

She also alleged that some people forcibly entered their house by breaking down the door and only her daughter and son were at home when the demolition was carried out.

“There was no one at home when the DDA officials came along with police. Aliza, who was preparing for her exam, and my son Ajeem were at home. My husband and I rushed to our house after being informed that it was being demolished,” Sabana said.

Aliza said after missing the exam, she talked to her teacher, who assured her that something would be done.

Her elder brother Ajeem said, “My education was disrupted during COVID-19, but my sister is very enthusiastic about studying. She used to teach our younger brother and tutor children from nearby houses.”

He feared that his sister’s education will be impacted due to the disturbance after the demolition of their house.

The DDA claimed that the demolition was carried out on a plot that was part of a planned development land.

“At no point in time during the demolition exercise were we aware of Wakeel’s recent contribution in the rescue operation of the workers entrapped in Silkyara Barkot tunnel in Uttarkashi,” it said in a statement.

However, the family members claimed that they told the DDA team during the demolition about Hasan’s role in the rescue operation in Uttarakhand in November last year.

Another rat-hole mining expert, Munna Qureshi, who was part of the rescue team along with Hasan in Uttarakhand, said, “While they were demolishing the house, we told them that we had saved people’s lives in Uttarkashi, but the DDA people did not bother to listen to us. Now, they are lying, saying they did not know.”

Hasan said, “When I questioned the DDA officials, they said my house was unauthorised. I tried to reason with them that it is situated along with other houses and there is a DDA wall behind it, but they insisted that it was unauthorised.” Justifying its action, the DDA said in its role as an authority, it “cannot allow encroachment” on its land or “unauthorised constructions in its development areas”.

The DDA also said Hasan was aware of his house’s “status of encroachment” as it was previously removed in 2016 and was encroached upon again in 2017.

Asserting that it was a “routine encroachment-removal drive”, the DDA said Wednesday’s action did not “target any particular individual”.

"Don't Segregate Prisoners On Basis Of Caste, Religion": Centre Tells State

'Don't Segregate Prisoners On Basis Of Caste, Religion': Centre Tells State

All states and Union Territories are requested to take note of the above, MHA said (Representational)

New Delhi:

The Centre has asked states and Union Territories not to segregate prisoners on the basis of their caste and religion and to stop assigning duties like managing prison kitchens according to the discriminatory approach.

In a communication, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the jail manuals of some states provide for segregation of prisoners based on their caste and religion and they are being assigned duties in the prisons accordingly.

“It may be noted that the Constitution of India prohibits any kind of discrimination on the grounds of religion, race, caste, or place of birth. The Model Prison Manual, 2016 prepared by the Ministry of Home Affairs and circulated to all states and UTs in May 2016 explicitly prohibits caste and religion-based discrimination of prisoners in the management of kitchen or cooking of food on caste or religious basis,” the communication said.

“The manual also provides that any special treatment to a group of prisoners belonging to a particular caste or religion is strictly prohibited,” it added.

The MHA said the prison manual also provides that no classification of prisoners shall be allowed on grounds of socio-economic status, caste or class.

All states and Union Territories are requested to take note of the above and ensure that their prison manual or prison act should not contain such discriminatory provisions, it said.

The MHA said in case any such provision exists, immediate steps must be taken to amend or remove the discriminatory provision from the manual or the act.

It is reiterated that there should be no caste-based assignment of duties or work in the prisons, it said.

The MHA said it has been the constant endeavour of the central government to reach out to the prison authorities of the country and provide them assistance in the form of financial aid for technology-driven projects as well as sharing contemporary best practices and guidelines on varied aspects of efficient prison administration from time to time.

As part of this exercise, the MHA said, the medical care of prisoners is one of the significant concerns of prison management.

The MHA said it has been advising the states and Union Territories from time to time to ensure that due importance is given to the physical and mental well-being of prisoners.

To maintain uniformity in the process of medical check-ups of prisoners, the Model Prison Manual 2016 provides for the procedure to be followed by the states and Union Territories.

The MHA said health check-ups of prisoners especially those who are old and specially-abled should be conducted regularly.

Special health check-ups of women prisoners and transgender prisoners should also be conducted besides periodic check-ups or screening of inmates for their mental well-being, it said.
