FA Cup: Chelsea Nudge Past Leeds into Quarters; Man Utd, Liverpool Progress too

London: Conor Gallagher came off the bench to score the winner as Chelsea beat Leeds United 3-2 in the fifth round of the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea bounced back from their EFL Cup final loss at Wembley Stadium last Sunday against Liverpool, to book a quarterfinal spot with Leicester City, who beat them in the 2021 FA Cup final.

Leeds had earlier taken a shock lead when Chelsea played themselves into trouble. A risky pass from Axel Disasi was intercepted and Jaidon Anthony laid off to Mateo Joseph who lashed in from close range.

It took just seven minutes for Chelsea to produce a response – Nicholas Jackson pulled the hosts level, stroking the ball through Illan Meslier‘s legs from an acute angle.

The finish for Chelsea’s second was even better as Mykhailo Mudryk raced onto a Raheem Sterling pull back to turn past Meslier for his first goal of 2024.

Leeds enjoyed a lot of the ball possession in the second half and levelled when Jaidon Anthony’s pinpoint cross arrived perfectly onto Joseph’s head on the hour mark.

But it was substitute Gallagher who spared Chelsea’s blushes as he swivelled and swept past Meslier with just five seconds of the 90 remaining, setting up a rerun of the 2021 final against Leicester City.

In the evening’s other fixtures, Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers earned 1-0 wins over Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively.

Casemiro proved an unlikely hero late on as Manchester United snuck past Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Mario Lemina scored the only goal of the game as Wolves beat Brighton in an all-Premier League affair.

Meanwhile, Liverpool kept their quadruple hopes alive with a comfortable 3-0 home success over Southampton to set up a huge quarter-final meeting with Man Utd.

90% Of Himalayas Will Face Year-Long Drought At 3 Degrees Warming: Study

90% Of Himalayas Will Face Year-Long Drought At 3 Degrees Warming: Study

90% of the Himalayan ranges will face year-long drought at 3 degrees warming, a study claimed

New Delhi:

About 90 per cent of the Himalayan Region will experience drought lasting over a year if global warming increases by 3 degrees Celsius, according to new research.

The findings, published in the journal Climatic Change, show that 80 per cent of the increased human exposure to heat stress in India can be avoided by adhering to Paris Agreement’s temperature goals of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to 3 degrees Celsius warming.

The team led by researchers at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the UK quantified how climate change risks to human and natural systems increase at a national scale as the level of global warming increases.

A collection of eight studies — all focusing on India, Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Ghana — shows that the risks of drought, flooding, declines in crop yields, and loss of biodiversity and natural capital greatly increase for each additional degree of global warming.

It found that in India pollination is reduced by half at 3-4 degrees global warming compared to a quarter reduction at 1.5 degrees.

Limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius allows half the country to act as a refuge for biodiversity, compared with 6 per cent at 3 degrees, the researchers said.

The team found very large increases in the exposure of agricultural land to drought with 3 degrees Celsius warming – more than 50 per cent of the agricultural land in each of the countries studied is projected to be exposed to severe droughts of longer than one year over a 30-year period.

However, limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius would reduce the increase in exposure of agricultural land to drought by between 21 per cent (India) and 61 per cent (Ethiopia) as well as reduce economic damages due to fluvial flooding. This happens when rivers and streams break their banks and the water flows out onto the adjacent low-lying areas.

Avoided increases in human exposure to severe drought are also 20–80 per cent lower at 1.5 degrees Celsius than 3 degrees Celsius across the six countries, the researchers said.

Economic damages associated with sea-level rise are projected to increase in coastal nations, but more slowly if warming was limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius, they said.

The researchers warned that more effort is needed to reduce global warming, as currently the policies in place globally are likely to result in 3 degrees Celsius of global warming.

One paper explored the risks to plants and vertebrates due to increases in global warming, and another developed a new natural capital risk register for each of the six countries that also included the projected changes in the risk stemming from future human population changes.

This combination shows that many areas in the six countries are already at high natural capital risk at 1.5 degrees Celsius when effects of increasing human population are accounted for.

The findings also showed that an expansion of protected area networks is necessary in order to deliver climate resilient biodiversity conservation.

“The results presented in this collection confirm the need for the implementation of climate policies aligned to the Paris Agreement limits if widespread and escalating climate change risk is to be avoided,” said lead author of the paper, Professor Rachel Warren, from the UEA.

“They provide additional confirmation of the rapid escalation of climate change risks with global warming found in the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) 2022 report, which identifies how the risk of severe consequences increases with every additional increment of global warming,” Warren said.

Although these studies focus on the risks to six countries only, other nations are projected to experience similar issues, the researchers said.

Greater emphasis needs to be placed on both climate change mitigation and climate change adaptation to avoid large increases in risk to both human and natural systems, they said.

“For example, a good way to combat the effects of climate change on natural systems and soak up carbon from the atmosphere is to restore ecosystems to their natural state, especially if warming can be held to 2 degrees Celsius or less. This has the additional benefit of restoring the natural capital bank in these areas,” said study co-author Jeff Price, also from the UEA.

The work focuses on developing countries as they tend to be more vulnerable to climate change than others. Spanning the continents of Asia, Africa, and South America, the case studies present examples of both large and small countries and cover a range of levels of socioeconomic development.

The risks assessed are the additional risks due to anthropogenic or human-induced climate change corresponding to the elevated global warming in comparison with a baseline of levels of risk in 1961-1990, when warming was approximately 0.3 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

Together the studies provide a harmonised assessment for the six countries of projected changes in exposure of humans and land to climate-related hazards, such as drought, water stress, fluvial and coastal flooding, and the projected effects of climate change on biodiversity, as well as the economic and societal implications of climate risks.

Kate Middleton's 2-Month Absence After Surgery Fuels Rumours Online

Kate Middleton's 2-Month Absence After Surgery Fuels Rumours Online

Kensington Palace has said Kate Middleton will return to public duties after Easter next month. (File)

Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, has been away from the public eye since December, leaving social media users speculating about the UK royal. According to Kensington Palace, the 42-year-old is recovering at home after a “planned abdominal surgery” in January, but some users believe the royal is in an “induced coma”.

On January 17, the office of the Prince and Princess of Wales said in a statement that the royal would spend 10 to 14 days in hospital after the surgical procedure and later recover at home.

“Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales was admitted to hospital yesterday for planned abdominal surgery. The surgery was successful, and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days, before returning home to continue her recovery,” the statement read.

However, in recent days, the royal’s prolonged absence from public life has spurred talk. While claims range from genuine concern to outlandish conspiracy theories, the most popular theory is that the royal suffered complications during her surgery and was put in an induced coma.

Spanish TV show host and journalist Concha Calleja first claimed that Kate was intubated and put under a coma after the procedure. “The decision was to put her in an induced coma. They had to intubate her. It was about saving her life,” Ms Calleja said.

Although Ms Calleja’s statements were dismissed as rumours by sources close to Buckingham Palace, it has done little to deter royal watchers and social media users from making more bizarre claims about the royal.

Kate’s husband Prince William, who recently pulled out of a scheduled appearance at a Windsor Castle citing a “personal matter”, has been seen attending galas and events alone, an unusual sight.

X, formerly Twitter, was flooded with memes about the royal going “missing”.

Soon after the royal family announced that Kate was undergoing a surgery, a new statement revealed King Charles was to have a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate. The 75-year-old monarch, who ascended to the throne last year, later revealed a cancer diagnosis.

While Kensington Palace has said Kate Middleton will return to public duties after Easter next month, local UK media claims it may take her up to nine months to recover completely.

The Buckingham Palace is yet to disclose the nature of the surgery.

Gaza facing ‘mass killing of children in slow motion’ as Israel blocks aid

The international charity organization “Save the Children” has voiced concern over the high death toll of children in the Gaza Strip, saying the besieged territory is facing a “mass killing of children in slow motion” as Israel continues to block safe delivery of aid.

Jason Lee, Save the Children’s country director in the occupied Palestinian territories, made the remarks on Wednesday, warning that time is running out for children in Gaza, particularly in northern areas, where they are at the highest risk of starvation due to a tight Israeli siege.

“What we are witnessing in Gaza is a mass killing of children in slow motion because there is no food left and nothing getting to them. They are dying because the world has failed to protect them, and now families are fleeing to Israel’s next military target to avoid starvation, caught in a death trap,” Lee said.

He went on to say that the international community must take serious action to prevent starvation in the blockaded territory.

“Whenever we learn lessons from the past, we resolve to never again let “atrocity crimes” unfold. The test is now right in front of us. Children are being starved while trucks of food are denied access and continued fighting prevent delivery of the little aid coming into Gaza. We are failing that test,” Lee said.

“Unless action is taken by the international community, to uphold their responsibilities under the Geneva Conventions and prevent the most serious crimes of international concern – including the use of starvation as a method of warfare – history will and should judge us all,” he added.

Lee further noted that Save the Children is calling for an immediate, definitive ceasefire to save and protect the lives of kids in Gaza, as well as the safe deliver of humanitarian aid supplies to the territory.

He also urged all donor governments and the rest of the international community to resume and scale up funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) as quickly as possible.

Seven children die at Kamal Adwan Hospital

The latest development comes as at least seven children have died at the Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern Gaza city of Jabalia due to malnutrition and dehydration, according to the director of the hospital.

The Health Ministry said that two children also died at the al-Shifa Hospital for the same reason.

The Israeli military has restricted the delivery of humanitarian supplies to northern Gaza for weeks, and thousands of children are going without sufficient food and medication.

Since early October, the Tel Aviv regime has cut the free flow of water, food, fuel, and power to the Gaza Strip, placing restrictions on the international aid sent to the region.

The prevention of aid convoys came as aid agencies like UNRWA are struggling to help Gazans who are under the incessant Israeli bombardments.

Nearly 30,000 people, including 14,000 children, have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its latest aggression on Gaza in early October.

Avtar Saini

Mumbai: The former head of software giant Intel, Avtar Saini died after he was knocked down by a speeding cab when he was out cycling in Navi Mumbai, officials said.

The incident happened around dawn on Wednesday. The police said that Saini, 68, living in Chembur, was cycling along the Palm Beach Road of Nerul along with a group of cycling enthusiasts, when a cab speeding on the road rammed into him from behind with full force, knocking him and injuring him, before trying to escape.

The tragedy took place around 5.50 a.m. near the Nerul Junction and the Seawoods Estate signal, and he was rushed to the nearby D.Y. Patil Hospital but pronounced dead on admission.

His co-cyclists told the police that after the cab hit him, Avtar Saini was flung away on the road and sustained severe injuries that proved fatal.

Soon after the accident, the cab driver Hrishikesh Khade attempted to flee the spot and drove the cab for nearly a km, but failed to go further as Saini’s cycle had got stuck under the car’s front wheels.

He was caught by other motorists nearby and handed over to the NRI Coastal Police Station, which lodged an FIR and slapped with various charges, including rash driving, stringent culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

According to his friends and former colleagues, Avtar Saini was an acclaimed chip designer and credited with the development of Intel 386 and 486 microprocessors and led to the design of the Pentium processor.

Shouldn't Pandya Play "Domestic Cricket"? Ex-India Star On BCCI Contracts

All eyes will be on Hardik Pandya with the star all-rounder set to lead Mumbai Indians (MI) in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Hardik, who has been out of action since October last year, had injured his ankle during the ODI World Cup game against Bangladesh in Pune. However, the all-rounder recently began his preparations for the IPL and was seen training in Baroda with his brother Krunal Pandya and MI teammate Ishan Kishan.

Despite his recent absence from the field, Hardik was awarded with a Grade A contract by BCCI in their annual player retainership.

On the other hand, Kishan and Shreyas Iyer‘s annual contracts were terminated by the BCCI reportedly after both players decided to skip Ranji Trophy games for their respective states, despite being declared fit.

Hardik has been a regular for Team India in white-ball cricket, but the selection committee has been reluctant to put him in the Test squad, as his body cannot withstand the workload of longest formate of the game.

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, however, feels that if Hardik doesn’t want to play Test cricket, he should atleast feature in domestic white ball games when he is not with the national team.

Pathan suggested that the criteria of selection should be same for everyone.

“They are talented cricketers, both Shreyas and Ishan. Hoping they bounce back and come back stronger. If players like Hardik don’t want to play red ball cricket, should he and others like him participate in white-ball domestic cricket when they aren’t on national duty? If this doesn’t apply to all, then Indian cricket won’t achieve the desired results!,” Pathan posted on X.

Meanwhile, Pandya was traded to MI from Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2024 auction.

A few days later, MI announced that he will lead the franchise in the upcoming season, replacing long-serving captain Rohit Sharma, who led them to five IPL titles.

All followers to soon see pinned posts on X: Elon Musk

New Delhi: Elon Musk on Thursday announced that X users will soon have the feature that allows their followers to see pinned posts.

In a post, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO said that the feature would allow one pinned post every 48 hours.

“A change is coming to our recommendation algorithm that will ensure that all your followers see your pinned posts,” the billionaire told his followers.

He, however, added that it only applies to one pinned post every 48 hours “to prevent gaming of the system”.

A follower commented that combined with X articles, “this will ensure high effort content is seen more”.

Another posted that this move could be a game-changer for content creators (writers specifically).

Meanwhile, continuing his tirade against Google, he posted that the company is “super biased”.

He responded after the tech giant claimed it is “politically neutral”.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai had said that the Gemini AI’s problematic responses around race is “unacceptable,” adding that the company would make structural changes to fix the issue.

“I know that some of its responses have offended our users and shown bias – to be clear, that’s completely unacceptable and we got it wrong,” Pichai told the employees.

Google had suspended its Gemini AI image creation feature last week.

"We've Lost Here But…": Brendon McCullum Issues Huge 'Bazball' Statement

England cricket team head coach Brendon McCullum© AFP

England cricket team head coach Brendon McCullum continued to show his support for ‘Bazball’ despite his team losing the five-match Test series against India. The visitors won the first match in Hyderabad but ended up losing three matches in a row with experts and fans criticising their style of play and questioning their ability to adapt according to situations. However, McCullum said that they have improved over the last 18 months and added they are capable of doing “some special shit”.

‘There’s times in games where we haven’t quite screwed down our method just yet. We’ve lost here, didn’t win the Ashes (2-2), but we’re a better team than 18 months ago, and we’ve got an opportunity in the next 18 months to do some special shit,” McCullum told the UK media.

”We’ll keep chiselling away at those rough edges. It’s not a bad time to be coach of the England team.”

India lead 3-1 in the series with the last game scheduled in Dharamsala from March 7. The team’s last home series loss was a 1-2 defeat to an Alastair Cook-led England in 2012-13. Since then, India have won 39 out of 50 Tests at home.

The host team’s victory marked a stunning downfall for ‘Bazball’, which has been a much-hyped winning mantra for England since 2022 and is now facing all-round criticism for being too rigid and lacking in depth.

Conceptualised after the appointment of Brendon McCullum as coach and Ben Stokes as captain, England’s plan to attack irrespective of circumstances found its match in the unflappable approach of the Indians.

While the visitors remained stubborn barring the conservative hundred by veteran Joe Root, the Indians adapted and refused to be bogged down by setbacks.
