Putin's Nuclear War Risk Warning If West Escalates Ukraine Conflict

The West has repeatedly criticised Putin for what they see as his reckless use of nuclear rhetoric

Moscow:

President Vladimir Putin warned on Thursday of a “real” risk of nuclear war if the West escalates the conflict in Ukraine.

In a defiant speech in Moscow, the Russian leader said his soldiers were advancing in Ukraine and warned the West of “tragic consequences” for any country that dared to send troops to Kyiv.

“They have announced the possibility of sending Western military contingents to Ukraine… The consequences for possible interventionists will be much more tragic,” Putin said in his annual address to the nation.

“They should eventually realise that we also have weapons that can hit targets on their territory. Everything that the West comes up with creates the real threat of a conflict with the use of nuclear weapons, and thus the destruction of civilisation,” said Putin.

His comments appeared to be a response to French President Emmanuel Macron’s refusal earlier this week to rule out sending troops to Ukraine — a refusal that drew rejection from leaders in Europe.

Western leaders have repeatedly criticised Putin for what they see as his reckless use of nuclear rhetoric since Moscow launched its full-scale military offensive against Ukraine.

After pulling Russia out of arms control treaties with the United States and previously warning he was “not bluffing” when he said he was ready to use nuclear weapons, Putin had appeared in recent months to dial down his nuclear threats.

But the fresh warning comes with the Kremlin buoyed by recent gains on the battlefield in Ukraine, an economy that has largely defied sanctions, signs of Western support for Ukraine fraying and ahead of an election certain to extend his term in the Kremlin until 2030.

– Putin confident –

That marks a sharp reversal in fortunes for Moscow over the last 12 months.

Last year at this time, Russian troops were reeling from Ukrainian counteroffensives that pushed them back in northeastern and southern Ukraine.

But after a Ukrainian counteroffensive in the summer of 2023 failed to bring similar results, today Kyiv has moved to defensive positions.

The initially strong Western support for Ukraine also appears to be shaking, with a $60-billion US aid package stalled in Congress.

Outgunning Ukrainian forces on the battlefield, Putin’s troops seized the eastern stronghold of Avdiivka and are attempting to build on their advances.

And on the economic front, Russia is faring better than many expected.

Massive investment in military production, as well as high salaries and benefits for soldiers, has largely shielded the economy from the worst consequences of Western sanctions.

Putin also touched on a number of domestic issues in his speech, outlining his pitch to Russians ahead of a presidential election that will take place March 15-17 without any real opposition candidates on the ballot.

There is little doubt on the outcome of the vote, but Putin has been making numerous media appearances since the start of the year, including recently flying a Russian bomber.

His speech at the Gostiny Dvor Palace near Moscow’s Red Square was broadcast not only on television but also on large digital screens and free of charge in cinemas across the country.

It also comes on the eve of the funeral planned in Moscow for Putin’s top opponent Alexei Navalny, who died in prison on 16 February in unclear circumstances.

Putin, who famously never referred to the opposition leader by name, has so far remained silent on Navalny’s death that prompted outrage at home and abroad.

Probe Agency Freezes Rs 123 Crore Of Shell Firms In Illegal Betting Case

Probe Agency Freezes Rs 123 Crore Of Shell Firms In Illegal Betting Case

ED initiated the investigation based on the FIR registered by Kerala Police.

New Delhi:

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has frozen Rs 123 crore, belonging to Singapore-based shell entities, parked in bank accounts of Mumbai-based NIUM Indian Pvt Ltd as part of its probe into a money laundering case of illegal online loans, gambling, and betting apps through a cluster of mule accounts in Kerala.

The amount was frozen following searches conducted last week at 10 locations in Mumbai, Chennai and Kochi at the premises of NIUM India Pvt Ltd and its directors based in Mumbai, Xoduz Solution Pvt Ltd, Vikrah Trading Enterprises Pvt Ltd, Tyrannus Technology Pvt Ltd, Future Vision Media Solutions Pvt Ltd, Aprikiwi Solution Pvt Ltd in Chennai and Raphael James Rozario, Kochi, to trace and unearth the proceeds of crime in the case.

As per the ED, the Rs 123 crore amount frozen by the agency is suspected to be proceeds of crime, belonging to shell entities of Singapore and parked in the bank accounts of NIUM Indian Pvt. Ltd on their behalf.

In the operations, the ED also recovered and seized several digital devices, various incriminating documents, multiple bank accounts used for laundering, and details of various movable and immovable assets of the accused person and entities.

ED initiated the investigation based on the FIR registered by Kerala Police and Haryana Police on the complaints given by various persons for their exploitation and cheating through online platforms such as loan, gambling, and betting apps being controlled by Chinese entities.

ED investigation revealed that proceeds of crime generated from the apps and other platforms, are aggregated and laundered through mule accounts opened in various banks in Kerala using payment aggregators.

“The funds collected, layered through multiple shell companies in Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai, and were finally being remitted outside India through various channels such as Crypto Currency, against fake imports of software from Singapore and Forex currency purchases,” said the agency in a statement.

ED investigation revealed that the accused floated many shell entities in India and used the same to send proceeds of crime to shell companies floated in Singapore.

“These Singapore shell entities would raise fake invoices for supply of software and other services in the name of the shell Indian entities in India where the proceeds of crime would have already been aggregated. These invoices are shared by global forex settlement platform named NIUM Singapore Pte Ltd (Singapore) who has Indian subsidiary Company namely NIUM India Pvt Ltd to collect the money from Indian entities based on fake invoices and transfer the same as outward remittance to NIUM Singapore Pte Ltd in the name of payment for technical services and such funds will be credited such funds in virtual wallet of Singapore Shell entities.”

Except the fake invoice, the ED said, no other documentation was collected by NIUM India Pvt Ltd from the remitters.

“In this manner, the shell remitter, the shell remittee and the sham import transactions were concealed from the Bank and monitoring agencies and the proceeds of crime are thereby laundered out of India,” said the ED.

Two decade wait ends, Khammam Science Museum to be ready by June

Two decade wait ends, Khammam Science Museum to be ready by June

Khammam: Ending a wait that spanned two decades, Khammam can soon boast of a District Science Museum and District Science Centre as officials are busy making arrangements for setting up the museum in the city.

The science museum was sanctioned in 2003-04 with a budget of Rs.10 lakh under the District Primary Education Programme (DPEP) but did not materialise due to multiple reasons, primarily a suitable location.

The wait has ended and finally, the museum is coming up at the old DEO office at Trunk Road in Khammam at a cost of Rs.54 lakh. The Education Department has made an agreement with BM Birla Science Museum in Hyderabad to design and fabricate science exhibits.

Rs 40 lakh is spent on exhibits.Speaking to Telangana Today, the District Science Officer D Jagadeeshwar informed that an advance payment of Rs 12 lakh has been made to BM Birla Science Museum and the fabrication of science exhibits is underway. The museum is expected to be ready by June.

In all, 26 exhibits related to science, biology, physics, mathematics and fun items would be displayed initially at the museum. A firm Nuevosol Energy Private Limited of Hyderabad came forward to donate Rs 20 lakh to the museum as part of its CSR initiative and the amount could help to procure some more exhibits, he noted. The old DEO office has been renovated spending Rs 16.70 lakh and the civil works have been completed. The science museum would be a great asset for the students as well as the common public in erstwhile Khammam district.

The museum would play an important role in the dissemination of scientific knowledge among the student community as well as for the popularisation of science. Exhibits in the museum would make learning come alive, Jagadeeshwar stated.

It may be noted the science museum was sanctioned in 2003-04 with a budget of Rs 10 lakh under District Primary Education Programme (DPEP) but the work related to the museum could not move further.

Later in 2004 and 2005 Rs 10 lakh each was released. In 2014, the district administration revived efforts to set up the museum with an estimated cost of Rs 40 lakh and started looking for a suitable location. Teams were sent to study science museums in erstwhile Warangal, Eluru and West Godavari districts.

But the project hit a roadblock as the officials could not find and finalise a suitable land or a building to set up the museum. Things started moving after the district Collector VP Gautham allotted the old DEO building to the museum when the DEO office was shifted to IDOC.

Cameron Green reveals ‘he was struggling’ after getting cramps in AUS-NZ 1st Test

Wellington: Star Australia all-rounder Cameron Green, who played a 103-run knock on day one of the first Test against New Zealand, revealed that he was struggling down his end after getting cramps while batting.

While battling with cramps, Green slammed his second Test century to help his team post 279/9 on boards at the time of stumps on Day 1 against New Zealand.

Initially tottering at 89-4 after being called in to bat at the Basin Reserve, Green led a rescue attempt alongside Mitchell Marsh, who scored 40 runs.

Green believed that New Zealand are slightly on top, but it’s not an easy pitch out there to bat on and the all-rounder added that after the 20th over, the ball kept coming back sharply in and was difficult to play.

While speaking after the stumps of day one, Green praised Mitchell Marsh for his attacking style while batting. “I was struggling down my end, and I know how Mitch plays having played quite a bit with him for WA. He always loves to score and that was exactly what we needed at the time,” Green was quoted by cricket.com.au as saying.

The duo of Green and Marsh scored 67 runs for the fifth wicket partnership. Marsh contributed 40 runs from 39 balls in the partnership.

He further hailed Marsh and called his 40-run knock in the first inning was “crucial” for the Aussies in the first Test match against New Zealand. “I thought his inning was really crucial for us today, just to put them on the back foot and try to take a bit of shine off the ball. I thought he batted beautifully,” he added.

Green’s counterattacking hundred revived troubled Australia in a see-saw opening day of the first Test against New Zealand after Matt Henry went all-out with his pace attack to dismantle the visitors at the Basin Reserve on Thursday.

Led by quick bowler Henry’s 4-43, the Blackcaps threatened to dismiss their highly regarded opponents for a low score but Green found willing accomplices in the lower order and launched a thrilling attack minutes before stumps to achieve his second Test hundred.

Setback For Rape Convict Ram Rahim, No More Parole Without Court Approval

Setback For Rape Convict Ram Rahim, No More Parole Without Court Approval

Rape convict Ram Rahim was given a 50-day parole in January

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has raised questions over repeated paroles granted to Dera Sacha Sauda chief, Gurmeet Ram Rahim, a rape convict who is supposed to be serving 20 years in prison. The rape convict was given a 50-day parole in January, it was his seventh parole in almost 10 months and ninth in the last four years.

The high court has directed the Haryana government to ensure the surrender of Ram Rahim on March 10, the day his parole is supposed to end and has ordered the state government to request the court’s permission to grant parole to Ram Rahim the next time.

Besides the setback, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered the state government to provide information as to how many people have been given payroll in this manner. The court was hearing a petition filed by SGPC.

Ram Rahim was given parole on three occasions and was out of jail for 91 days. He was released for 21 days in November, 30 days in July, and 40 days in January – to attend former Dera chief Shah Satnam’s birth anniversary. The frequent paroles/furloughs were questioned by the court and the state government has been asked to provide information on how many prisoners applied for parole and how many applications were accepted by them.

The high court also sought answers from the Haryana government over benefits given to the rape convict and how many prisoners received similar treatment.

Ram Rahim Singh was convicted by a special CBI court in Haryana’s Panchkula in August 2017 for raping two women.

There’s a pattern behind granting paroles to him and it usually happens during state elections or local body polls. Dera followers, and particularly those of Ram Rahim Singh, are influential in Punjab’s Malwa region, with their votes seen as key in deciding parliamentary and legislative elections. The Malwa region has 69 constituencies – over half of the Punjab Assembly’s 117 seats.

Dera followers – who number in the crores and have been relatively subdued since Rahim Singh was jailed – are widely seen as voting per diktats from sect leaders.

In February 2022, the Dera chief was given a 21-day parole just days ahead of the Punjab Assembly election. The furlough was challenged in the Punjab and High Court. The petitioner said the order of furlough is “unwarranted, illegal, untenable”.

A few months later in June 2022, he was out of jail for 30 days in the middle of the Haryana Municipal elections. Four months later in October, he was out again for 40 days before a by-election to Haryana’s Adampur seat.

Avoid politics, take corrective measures on Kaleshwaram project: KTR tells govt

Hyderabad: The Congress government in Telangana should immediately take corrective measures with regards to the “defects” in the Medigadda barrage, part of Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project and release water rather than politicising the issue, BRS Working President KT Rama Rao said on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters, he also said the state government is free to take action against anyone if there are lapses in the project.

“This (damage at barrages) may not be the first or the last. The first thing that the government should have done is to take corrective steps. They have been making allegations for the past 75 days over the issue. Elections are over. There is no need to politicise the issue,” Rama Rao said.

Rama Rao’s comments came a day after state Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy’s remarks that it was extremely foolish and arrogant of BRS leaders to talk about giving a “Chalo Medigadda” call.

Reddy insisted that ideally, former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who also held irrigation portfolio, should visit the Kaleshwaram project himself and apologise to Telangana for the alleged lapses in the project.

Opposition BRS had said that they would visit the Kaleshwaram project’s Medigadda barrage on March 1 to explain its benefits to the people and “expose” the Congress government’s efforts to defame their predecessor.

The ruling Congress and BRS have been engaged in a war of words over the damage to some piers of the Medigadda barrage.

The National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) had found in November last year that the Medigadda barrage had been severely compromised, rendering it useless unless it was fully rehabilitated.

Reacting to the challenge by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy that Rama Rao should win at least one Lok Sabha seat in the upcoming general elections, the BRS leader said he would accept it if Revanth Reddy resigned from his MLA post and contested the polls.

Taking revenge to never be removed from agenda: IRGC cmdr.

The Iranian people will create another epic by participating in the elections on Friday and disappoint the enemies, the commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said.

Speaking to reporters in the southern city of Kerman on Thursday, Major General Hossein Salami said every vote cast in Friday’s polls will be like a missile fired at the heart of the enemy.

He added that the Iranian people’s presence in the polling stations will frustrate the enemy and encourage the front of the Islamic Revolution.

“I am confident that the majority of the Iranian people… will take part in the upcoming elections and register another great epic in the history of Iran and Islam,” the senior commander said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Salami said that Americans have entered everywhere and brought insecurity, backwardness, dependence, poverty, deprivation, insecurity, murder, instability to them.

Maybe the story of many revenges was not told, but revenge for all these is on the agenda and will never be removed from our agenda, he said, adding, “We will not allow these to dominate the fate of Muslims.”

20 Indians Trapped In Russia-Ukraine Warzone Send SOS: Government

20 Indians Trapped In Russia-Ukraine Warzone Send SOS: Government

Some 20 Indians are trapped in Russia, says the MEA

New Delhi:

At least 20 Indians who are trapped in Russia have contacted the Indian authorities, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said today.

India is trying its best to bring back the Indians and are in touch with Russian authorities, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters today.

The Centre on February 23 had acknowledged that some Indians are entangled in Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine, stating that the government is coordinating with its Russian counterpart to facilitate their release.

Reports had emerged that dozens of Indians were allegedly duped into military service in Russia.

The unsuspecting Indians were promised support jobs, but were ultimately enlisted in the Russian army, receiving misleading translations of documents and undergoing military training against their initial understanding.

Among those who were duped into fighting for Russia is a man from Jammu and Kashmir, whose distraught family is waiting for his return.

A job agent had lured Azad Yousf Kumar and he ended up on the Ukraine border. The family said the 31-year-old was forced to fight the war and appealed to the government to intervene and help get their son back.

“We request the government of India for his safe return and to reach back his home safely. All Indian children should return safely,” Asad Yousf’s cousin said.

A skilled labourer in digging tube wells, Kumar is a resident of Poshwan in Pulwama district. He is among the two Kashmiris who were duped into fighting for Russia in December last year. Days after getting “enlisted” in the Russian military, he suffered a gunshot wound in his foot.

Ramagundam CP inspects ferry points on Pranahita

Mancherial: Ramagundam Commissioner of Police M Srinivasulu inspected ferry points on the banks of Pranahita river in the Maoist-affected area at Venchepalli village in Vemanapalli mandal on the borders of Telangana and Maharashtra on Thursday.

He was accompanied by Mancherial Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sudhir Kekan. Srinivasulu initially checked about the socio-economic conditions of dwellers and fishermen at the ferry points. He asked them if they were facing any challenges and movement of Maoists.

He said the police were always at the forefront in serving the needy and advised them not to extend cooperation to anti-social elements.

The Commissioner then inspected the under-construction Neelwai police station building. He instructed the executing agency to expedite the work.

He also inspected details of boat operators and about the condition of the forest cover. Stating that a drone-camera based patrolling system was being used to track movements of Maoists, he said steps were being taken to ensure the impending Lok Sabha polls were conducted peacefully.

Efforts were being made to help voters from Maoist-affected areas to utilise their franchise in a free and fair environment.

Jaipur ACP Venkateshwarlu, Chennur Rural Inspector D Sudhakar, Chennur Town Inspector Ravinder, Neelwai Sub-Inspector Subbarao, Kotapalli SI Mahender and others were present. Eom
