Team director Mohammad Hafeez missed his flight to Sydney for Pakistan’s final Test series clash against Australia, according to Geo News. Australia gained an unassailable lead of 2-0 following their second consecutive triumph in the three-match series against the Asian Giants. According to Geo News sources, Hafeez was travelling with his wife and was supposed to travel to Sydney with the Pakistan team but he missed the flight at the airport. The former Pakistan player arrived late at the airport after which the staff did not allow him and his wife to board the plane. Hafeez and his wife took another flight to Sydney hours later. Pakistan is likely to hand Saim Ayub his debut cap and he could make his place in the team in place of Imam-ul-Haq.

The Geo News source also revealed that the workload of vice-captain Shaheen Shah Afridi could be reduced and he is likely to bowl less overs in the final Test of the series.

The left-arm pacer has bowled 99.2 overs in the series which is more than any player in both teams.

The fate of the series could have been left hanging as Pakistan came close to winning the second Test but ended up falling short at the end.

Pakistan stood in pole position to emerge triumphant when they were 219 for 5 and needed 98 runs for a series-levelling victory as the match seemed poised to be a cliffhanger.

But Australia skipper Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc bowled a remarkable fast bowling spell as they took the host to a second consecutive triumph with a 79-run victory.

After the game, Hafeez who was emotionally charged declared that Pakistan were better and said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo, “We played better cricket as a team. I’m proud of that. The way the team had the courage to attack this game in the best possible way. If I sum up the game, the Pakistan team played better than the other team in general. Our batting intent was better, and while bowling, we were hitting the right areas. Yes, we made some mistakes that cost us the game but as a team, I believe that there were a lot of positives, enough to win the game but unfortunately, at the end, we didn’t win the game.”

Pakistan will now look to win their first Test game on Australian soil since 1995 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on January 3.

Iran sends 2nd notice to US over Gen. Soliemnai assassination

Tavakkol Habibzadeh, the head of center for Iranian President’s Legal and International Affairs, made the announcement on Monday, saying the second notice was written and sent after the United States failed to respond to the first one on holding negotiations, Press TV reported.

The notice demanding arbitration was written based on the Protection of Diplomats Convention, a 1973 United Nations anti-terrorism treaty on the prevention and punishment of crimes against internationally protected persons, including diplomatic agents.

According to Article 13 of the convention, Habibzadeh said, the first notice seeking negotiation is sent to the other party and if it does not respond to it, the second memo is sent to request arbitration.

As per the convention, if no response is provided by the Americans within six months from the date of the request for arbitration, the third step will be taken that is referring the dispute to the International Court of Justice, he further explained.

Habibzadeh said that about a month and a half ago, the Iranian Foreign Ministry sent the second notice to the United States to request arbitration between Tehran and Washington, and that the US administration has until the end of April to respond to it.

General Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), and their companions were assassinated in a US drone strike authorized by then-US President Donald Trump near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.

Two days after the attack, Iraqi lawmakers approved a bill that required the government to end the presence of all foreign military forces led by the US in the country.

Both commanders were highly revered across the Middle East because of their key role in fighting the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group in the region, particularly in Iraq and Syria.

On January 8, 2020, the IRGC targeted the US-run Ain al-Asad base in Iraq’s western province of Anbar with a wave of missile attacks in retaliation for the assassination of General Soleimani.

According to the Pentagon, more than 100 American forces suffered “traumatic brain injuries” during the counterstrike on the base, with the Islamic Republic describing the missile attack on Ain al-Assad as a “first slap.”

Yemen reiterates resolve to counter foreign military presence in regional waters

Yemen’s parliament says the country is determined to counter the presence of the US and the UK in regional waters.

The Yemeni parliament has reiterated the country’s resolve to counter any military presence of the US and the UK in regional waters, a day after members of the Yemeni navy were killed in an attack by US forces in the Red Sea.

A statement issued by the Yemeni parliament on Monday said the United States is seeking an escalation of hostilities in the Arab world amid a conflict in Palestine where the Israeli regime’s aggression on Gaza has prompted attacks on Israeli and US interests in the Arab countries of the region.

“By attacking Yemen’s ships, the US is seeking to expand conflicts in the Arab world so that it can support savage killings committed against the Palestinian nation,” said the statement.

American and Yemeni officials have confirmed that three Yemeni ships sunk and 10 Yemeni officers were killed in the Red Sea as a result of clashes on Sunday between US and Yemeni naval forces.

Yemen’s ruling Houthi Ansarullah movement has organized attacks on ships linked to the Israeli regime since the aggression on Gaza began in early October.

The attacks are aimed at forcing the Israelis and their allies to stop the aggression that has left nearly 22,000 people dead in Gaza.

The Yemenis have vowed they would take revenge for the Sunday attacks on their ships while they have reiterated that such attacks would only cause an escalation in their anti-Israeli operations.

Regional countries have also warned that a failure to stop the war in Gaza would cause the conflict to spread to other parts of the region.

That comes as reports on Monday suggested that the attacks on Yemeni ships had emboldened US allies to enter the conflict in the Red Sea.

British officials said they were planning to join a US-led maritime coalition in the region to counter what it called threats from the Houthis.

Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said in an article published in the Daily Telegraph that the United Kingdom was “willing to take direct action” against the Houthis.

Iran's 'Alborz' Warship Enters the Red Sea Amid Raging Tensions: Report

Tehran, Iran:

Iran’s Alborz warship has entered the Red Sea through the strategic Bab al-Mandeb strait, Tasnim news agency reported Monday, at a time of heightened tensions over the globally important waterway.

The agency did not give specific reasons for its deployment, but noted that Iranian military vessels had operated in the area since 2009.

“The Alborz destroyer entered the Red Sea… by passing through the Bab al-Mandeb,” waterway at the southern tip of the Red Sea, connecting with the Gulf of Aden in the Indian Ocean, the agency said.

It added that Iran’s naval fleet has been operating in the area “to secure shipping lanes, repel pirates, among other purposes since 2009”.

The United States in early December set up a multinational naval task force for the Red Sea following a flurry of missile and drone attacks by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Huthi rebels on merchant vessels which led shipping companies to suspend passages through the area.

The Huthis say the attacks were in solidarity with Palestinians in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip, where Israel is battling Hamas operatives.

According to the International Chamber of Shipping, 12 percent of global trade passes through the Red Sea, which provides a shortcut past Africa via the Suez Canal.

On Sunday, US Navy helicopters fired on Huthi rebels attempting to board a cargo ship off Yemen, with the rebels reporting 10 fighters dead or missing.

Regional tensions have spiked since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7.

On Monday, Britain’s Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said Britain was “willing to take direct action” against the Huthis “to deter threats to freedom of navigation in the Red Sea”.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron had spoken on Sunday with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian about the Red Sea tensions.

“I made clear that Iran shares responsibility for preventing these attacks,” he said on social media, noting Tehran’s “long-standing support” for the Huthis.

Abdollahian criticised the “double-standards” of some Western countries, according to a statement from Iran’s foreign ministry, saying the “Israeli regime cannot be allowed… to set the region on fire” with the Gaza war.

The United States previously accused Iran of being “deeply involved” in the Huthi attacks.

Iran has denied such accusations saying the Huthi rebels were acting on their own.

In 2021, the Alborz repulsed a pirate attack against two oil tankers in the Gulf of Aden.

And in 2015, it was one of two Iranian warships sent to the strait “to ensure the safety of commercial ships” in what was seen at the time as a sign of tensions with Saudi Arabia.

Don't Recognise ad-Hoc Panel And Ministry Suspension: Sanjay Singh

Indian wrestling teetered on the edge of a deeper crisis with Sanjay Singh, President of the suspended WFI, on Monday declaring that they will soon organise the national championships and insisting that they neither recognise the suspension of their newly-elected body by Sports Ministry nor the ad-hoc panel. Three days after the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) held its polls, the ministry suspended the sports body citing several violations of rules on December 24. On the request of the government, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) then formed a three-member panel, headed by Bhupender Singh Bajwa, to manage the day-to-day affairs of the body. The other members of the committee are former hockey player M M Somaya and ex-shuttler Manjusha Kanwar.

The ad-hoc panel announced that it will host the senior national championships in Jaipur from February 2-5.

Sanjay, though, remained combative and said they will not co-operate with the ad-hoc panel and will organise the Nationals.

“We got elected democratically. The Returning Officer had signed the papers, how do they ignore that. We do not recognise this ad-hoc panel,” Sanjay told PTI.

Asked how will they organise they Nationals, he said, “We do not recognise this suspension. The WFI is working smoothly, we are on the job.” “How will they (ad-hoc panel) organise Nationals if our state associations will not send the teams. We will organise our National Championship soon. We are soon calling the Executive Committee meeting. The notice of the EC meeting will be sent in a day or two and we will have the Nationals organised before they do it.” If the WFI goes on to organise its own Nationals the crisis will take a turn for the worst.

“We had sent our explanation to the ministry that we have not flouted any rules. We are still awaiting a reply. We will wait for a day or two. If they do not want to engage with us, we are not also not interested then.

“Our federation does not recognise this suspension.” Indian wrestling has witnessed unprecedented power struggle in the last one year. In protest against Sanjay, who is a close aide of sexual harassment accused Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, becoming WFI president Bajrang Punia returned his Padma Shri and Vinesh Phogat returned her Arjuna Award and Khel Ratna.

Sakshi Malik had quit wrestling the day Sanjay won the WFI president’s election. PTI AT AT AH AH
