"Some Trinamool Leaders Indulged In Corruption But…": Bengal Minister

'Some Trinamool Leaders Indulged In Corruption But...': Bengal Minister

Those who have indulged in corruption in the recruitment scam are sinners, said Firhad Hakim.

Kolkata:

Senior West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim on Monday claimed that some leaders of the Triinamool Congress have indulged in corruption, and it does not mean the entire party is corrupt.

Mr Hakim, an influential leader who holds multiple posts in the administration and is considered close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, said that the leaders who take money for “giving” jobs to people should rather “eat the flesh of their mothers”.

The comment comes amid the arrest of several TMC leaders and state ministers in the school recruitment irregularities.

“Yes, there are some people who have indulged in corruption, but that doesn’t mean that the entire party is corrupt,” Mr Hakim, who is the state’s urban development minister and the mayor of Kolkata, said.

“Those who have indulged in corruption in the recruitment scam are sinners. Such sinners should rather have the flesh of their mothers than take money in exchange for providing jobs to unemployed youths,” he said.

Mr Hakim’s comment drew sharp reactions from not only the opposition but also from within his own party.

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, “What was he doing when the corruption was taking place? Why was he silent then? This attempt to pretend that some people are very honest is ridiculous.” Senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh said that Hakim’s statement was a ploy to “fool the people of the state” ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

“When corruption was happening, everybody was busy having their own share of the flesh. Now, ahead of the elections, they are behaving as if they knew nothing,” Mr Ghosh said.

What Makes Kagiso Rabada A "Special Bowler"? South Africa Great Explains

Kagiso Rabada’s hunger for success and an impeccable technique to release the ball easily makes him a modern-day South Africa legend, reckons former fast bowling great Allan Donald. Explaining what makes Rabada special, Donald said Rabada’s hip-rotation is like a javelin thrower and that adds pace to his bowling. Donald said Rabada’s bowling style is similar to the past legends of the game. The 28-year-old, who has competed in 61 matches, is just 13 scalps away from completing 300 Test wickets.

“Skill is one thing but he has an got amazing ability to run the ball away. He has got some amazing wickets with stunning balls in the first Test match,” Donald, who is now an acclaimed pace bowling coach, told PTI in an interview.

In the series-opener, Rabada took seven wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the first Indian innings at Centurion.

“He was outstanding to watch as he always is and I just think his thirst for success drives his consistency. Anyone who gets success, doesn’t matter what sport he plays, is judged by consistency,” said Donald, who is now attached with Cricket South Africa academy.

“If you look at Dale Steyn, he brought that thirst for consistency for himself and KG is no different as he is such a hungry individual. I see in him to be the absolute best competitor on the field that he can be.”

The Technical Part

To bowl fast, smooth hip and shoulder movements are pre-requisites and Rabada is a cut above the rest technically, the “white lightening” said.

“All genuine quicks have got great hip and shoulder rotation and if you observe him technically, he gets in a fantastic position in the air. We always talk about the launch, how they launch off the floor or how big they get at the crease.

“Look at other greats like Curtley Ambrose, Courtney Walsh, Ian Bishop, Michael Holding all these got off the floor to give them time to pull the trigger and that’s what KG does beautifully. That hang time (off the ground) we talk about.

“Also if you see at point of backfoot strike, the hips are slightly closed and open up very very quickly. They don’t spend too much time on backfoot. KG is very quick.” Donald likened Rabada’s hip rotation to that of a top javelin thrower.

“If you listen to his feet, every ball is so quick. KG’s hip rotation is similar to a javelin thrower’s right side release through the impact area. He knows his rhythm and action so well so technical point he is solid. He understands biomechanics as much as a Pat Cummins or a Mitchell Starc,” Donald said.

Initially his partnership with Fannie de Villiers, Brian McMillan, Brett Schultz was talked about much and later on he formed a lethal partnership Shaun Pollock.

“I am always wary about drawing comparisons as to what we were and what currently is on the table for the Proteas. We had our time under the Sun and were No. 1 in the world. We had a wonderful attack and had incredible depth .

“We were also blessed and every province had 5 or 6 fast bowlers and you were always looking over your shoulder. If I don’t pull my socks up then I could lose my place,” he fondly recollected.

“But I think this attack I think have got a future in front of them you have got a guy in name of Rabada who is leading this attack beautifully, who is an outstanding performer and leader of the pack,” he signed off.

Pak Poll Body Rejects Over 3,000 Nominations For Upcoming Elections

The general elections slated to be held in Pakistan on February 8, 2024.

Islamabad:

The Pakistan Election Commission (ECP) rejected the nomination papers of 3,240 candidates aspiring to contest elections at national and provincial levels to be held on February 8, 2024, ARY News reported on Monday.

It reported that the official data released by the Pakistan electoral body revealed that 1024 candidates were denied eligibility to contest national assembly elections and 2,216 individuals, failed to secure approval for the provincial assembly race.

A total of 25,951 nominations were filed by the candidates from which the Returning Officers (ROs) accepted 22,711 candidates. For the National Assembly, 6,449 candidates received approval and 1024 faced rejection.

The ROs accepted 16,262 nominations for various provincial assembly seats. Punjab witnessed the highest number of rejections (521) for National Assembly nominations, followed by Sindh (166), Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (152), Balochistan (92), and Islamabad Capital Territory (93).

For provincial assembly seats, the ROs rejected the nomination papers of 943 candidates in Punjab; 520 in Sindh; 386 in Balochistan and 367 in the K-P, for a total of 2,216. The total number of people who filed nomination papers to contest provincial assembly elections was 18,478.

Following the completion of two phases of the election process, in the third phase, appeals against the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers can be submitted by Wednesday and decisions on these appeals will be made by the 10th of this month, ARY News reported.

The preliminary list of candidates will be displayed on the 11th and candidates can withdraw their nomination papers by the 12th of this month.

The electoral symbols will be allotted on the 13th of this month, while polling for the general elections will be held on the 8th of next month.

Moreover, ECP rejected the nomination papers for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khanb, dealing a major blow to the former Prime Minister ahead of the upcoming elections slated for February 8, 2024, The News International reported on Saturday.

Despite being disqualified from contesting the upcoming general elections in Pakistan, jailed ex-PM Imran Khan submitted his nomination papers from his home constituency in Mianwali on Friday, as reported by Geo News.

Meanwhile, in a development that has led to heavy criticism for Islamabad, the Pakistan Markazi Muslim League (PMML), a political entity of Hafiz Saeed, has fielded candidates for each and every national and provincial assembly constituency across Pakistan for the upcoming general elections slated to be held on February 8, 2024.

Hafiz Saeed’s son Talha Saeed is also going to contest the polls from the National Assembly’s constituency NA-127, Lahore, while PMML’s central president Khalid Masood Sindhu is taking part from NA-130, against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supremo and former PM Nawaz Sharif.

Saeed, who has been in jail since July 17, 2019, for other charges, was sentenced in April 2022 by a special anti-terrorism court in Lahore, Pakistan, to a jail term of 33 years for “financing terrorism.”

Despite being designated a terrorist by the UN and EU in the 2000s, Saeed was neither charged nor extradited over nearly two decades.

Saeed was designated as a terrorist by the United Nations Security Council in December 2008.

Meanwhile, India has also conveyed a request to the Pakistani government regarding the extradition of 26/11 attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed to India for facing trial in a particular case.MEA said that New Delhi has conveyed the request with all relevant supporting documents.

Child Onboard 'Donkey Flight' Not Missing, Reports Are False: Gujarat Cop

Child Onboard 'Donkey Flight' Not Missing, Reports Are False: Gujarat Top Cop

Some 60 passengers are from Gujarat and many of them have been questioned.

Gujarat Director General of Police Vikas Sahay on Monday refuted reports that a 2-year-old boy on board the Nicaragua-bound flight that was sent back to India from France had gone missing.

The Nicaragua-bound aircraft, an Airbus A340, carrying 276 passengers, was grounded in France for four days over suspected human trafficking. It landed in Mumbai in the early hours on December 26.

“The news report (claiming the child is untraceable) is incorrect. Our officers checked the records of passengers and found out the boy had already returned home with his parents,” said Sahay.

As per news reports that appeared during the day, the 2-year-old boy was not accompanied by anyone during the flight and had gone untraceable.

Some 60 passengers are from Gujarat and many of them have been questioned by the CID-Crime in a bid to unearth a suspected illegal immigration network operating from the state, officials had said earlier.

They are being questioned to find out whether they had any plans to cross into the USA illegally after reaching Latin America, officials had said some days ago.

“They were sent back from France. Now there was a rumour they had planned to enter into the US illegally after landing at Nicaragua. In their statements, they told us that they were going there as tourists. We are going into the details to find out who were agents behind their trip,” Additional Director General of Police, CID – Crime and Railways, S P Rajkumar, had said on December 29.

The chartered flight, which was operated by Romanian charter company Legend Airlines and bound for Nicaragua, landed at Vatry near Paris on December 21 for a technical stopover en route from Dubai when the French police intervened.

French authorities launched a judicial investigation into the conditions and purpose of the trip, with a unit specialising in organised crime investigating suspected human trafficking.

Nicaragua has become a popular destination for those seeking asylum in the US.

How Did Shaheen Become Pak T20 Captain? Afridi's "Galti Se" Reply Is Viral

File photo of Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Afridi© AFP

The Pakistan cricket team underwent a huge transformation following a disappointing run in the Cricket World Cup 2023. The entire selection committee was revamped by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and in place of Babar Azam, fast bowler Shaheen Afridi was made the T20I captain. Legendary Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi, also the fast bowler’s father-in-law, had a funny take on Shaheen becoming the captain for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand and he came up with an explanation involving veteran star Mohammad Rizwan.

During a recent event attended by Rizwan, Shaheen, fast bowler Haris Rauf and senior wicketkeeper-batter Sarfaraz Ahmed, Afridi was all praise for Rizwan.

He lauded the veteran star’s performance in the World Cup and said that he wanted Rizwan to be the T20 captain but Shaheen got the job “by mistake”.

“I admire Rizwan’s hard work and focus level. His best quality, which I like most, is only focusing on his game and paying no heed to who doing what and what not. He is really a fighter!” said Afridi in an event organised by the Shahid Afridi Foundation.

“I wanted to see him (Rizwan) as the T20 captain, but Shaheen became the skipper by mistake,” he added leaving the players along with the audience in splits.

Afridi’s first assignment as captain will be the five-match T20I series against New Zealand starting January 12, with matches being played on January 14, 17, 19 and 21. It will be the start of their preparation for T20 World Cup 2024 which will take place later this year.

He is accused of illegally sanctioning tenders

DSP Omendra Singh said that on a complaint by Anta city BJP president Rameshwar Khandelwal, the police lodged a case against Bhaya, who was the mining minister in the previous Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government, and Khan at Anta police station.

They have been booked under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 406 ( criminal breach of trust); 467, 468 and 471 (related to forgery) and 120(B) (criminal conspiracy).

“The police collected necessary documents from Anta municipality and, after an initial investigation, lodged the case in the matter. A probe is on against officials involved in the tender process in the municipality,” DSP Singh, who is the Circle Officer- Anta, said.

War Against Hamas Will Continue Throughout 2024, Warns Israeli Army

War Against Hamas Will Continue Throughout 2024, Warns Israeli Army

UN says 85 per cent of the population has been displaced in Gaza. (File)

Palestinian Territories:

Israel warned its war against Hamas will continue throughout 2024 as unrelenting strikes killed two dozen people in Gaza and the Palestinian group fired a rocket barrage at the stroke of midnight.

Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said in a New Year’s message that some of the 300,000 army reservists would get a break from the war, in order to prepare for the “prolonged fighting” ahead.

The army “must plan ahead, understanding that we will be required for additional tasks and warfare throughout this year,” Hagari said as the conflict sparked by the October 7 Hamas attacks raged on.

Heavy artillery fire again pounded targets in Hamas-run Gaza, killing at least 24 people, health ministry officials there said, with attacks reported across the length of the territory.

In the besieged Gaza Strip, where the UN says 85 percent of the population has been displaced, 20-year-old Hamdan Abu Arab said he hoped “2024 will be better”.

“We used to go out and enjoy our time on the last day of the year,” he recalled. “But this New Year’s Eve, there are only missiles and the remains of people.”

Hamas marked the start of the year by firing a rocket barrage at Israel in what it called a “response to the massacres of civilians”.

AFP journalists in Tel Aviv witnessed missile defence systems intercept rockets overhead as some revellers ran for cover and others kept up the party with a shrug.

“My heart was pounding,” said one, Gabriel Zemelman, 26, shortly after the rocket fire. “It’s terrifying. You just saw the life we live, it’s crazy.”

The bloodiest ever Gaza war was triggered by Hamas’s October 7 attacks on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of around 1,140 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

The operatives also took around 250 people hostage that day, more than half of whom remain in Gaza, according to Israeli officials.

Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas and launched a punishing offensive that has reduced vast areas of Gaza to a ruined wasteland and killed at least 21,822 people, mostly women and children, according to the territory’s health ministry.

The Israeli army says 172 of its soldiers have been killed inside Gaza in the battle against the Islamist group which Israel, the United States and European Union have designated a “terrorist” organisation.

‘We live like animals’

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Saturday that the fighting would last “many months until Hamas is eliminated and the hostages are returned”.

Hagari said “we are also currently adapting the planning of the force deployment in Gaza and the reserve system. Some of the reservists will return to their families and employment this week.

“This will significantly ease the burden on the economy and allow them to gather strength for the upcoming activities in the next year, as the fighting will continue and they will still be required.”

Since Israel imposed a siege at the outset of the war, Gazans have been facing dire shortages of food, water, fuel and medicine.

UN chief Antonio Guterres has condemned the “epic human suffering” and “collective punishment” of Palestinian civilians, while the WHO has warned of the risk of hunger and infectious disease.

“We are exhausted… We were displaced five times during this war,” said 29-year-old Bassam Hana.

“We hope things improve in 2024 and that we live just like any other human being. Currently, we live like animals.”

At least 48 Palestinians were killed in strikes on Gaza City over the weekend, the territory’s health ministry said, with many still buried under the rubble.

“After the explosion we arrived at the scene of the strike and saw martyrs everywhere,” said one resident after a building was hit. “Children are still missing, we can’t find them.”

Hagari, in a briefing on Sunday, said several operatives “were killed and subdued during the battles in Khan Yunis”, the main southern city, earlier in the day.

“We are continuing to handle the underground tunnels and to strike the rocket launching array, in order to reduce rocket fire into the State of Israel,” he said, adding that “dozens of aircrafts are in the skies of Gaza at any given moment”.

Regional fears

International mediators have continued efforts toward a new pause in fighting.

A Hamas delegation from Qatar visited Cairo on Friday to discuss an Egyptian three-phase plan proposing renewable ceasefires, a staggered release of hostages for Palestinian prisoners, and ultimately an end to the war, sources close to Hamas said.

Their allies Islamic Jihad said on Saturday that Palestinian factions were evaluating the proposal and would give a response “within days”.

The war in Gaza has raised fears of a broader regional conflict, with hostilities flaring with mostly Iran-backed groups in nearby countries who say they are acting in support of Hamas.

The Israeli army announced Sunday night having intercepted two “hostile aircraft” launched from Syria towards northern Israel.

Earlier it had reported launches toward Israeli territory from Lebanon, where it has fought the Hezbollah group.

“Throughout the day, IDF (military) tanks and helicopters targeted three terrorist squads operating in Lebanon,” the army said in a statement.

And in the Red Sea, the US military said Sunday that Navy helicopters had fired at Iran-backed Huthi rebel boats off Yemen that were attacking a cargo ship, with Yemeni sources reporting 10 rebels killed.
