Jailed Ex-Pak PM Imran Khan's Party Targeted By 'Pre-Poll Rigging': Watchdog

Lahore, Pakistan:

Jailed former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan’s party is being targeted by “systematic dismemberment” and “pre-poll rigging”, a rights watchdog said Tuesday, casting doubt on the fairness of upcoming elections.

Nomination papers for Mr Khan and the majority of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party candidates have been rejected by the electoral commission, according to PTI, shutting them out of the February 8 ballot.

“The nature of the rejections seems systematic,” Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) official Farhatullah Babar told AFP.

“The way scores of nomination papers were rejected is brazen and the reasons given for the rejections were very flimsy,” he said, adding there was “no room for doubt that pre-poll rigging is taking place”.

Mr Khan, 71, has been in prison since August and is facing trial in a slew of cases he says have been orchestrated to prevent him from contesting the election as the figurehead of his party.

The Electoral Commission of Pakistan rejected his nomination because he had been disqualified from holding office over a graft conviction last year.

But the HRCP said it had documented “harassment” of other PTI candidates attempting to put their names down for the poll.

“After the election takes place there may be a lack of acceptance regarding its fairness” and the new government may not be recognised as “legitimate” by the public, Babar warned.

“This situation could intensify the existing political uncertainty and, ultimately, contribute to a further erosion of human rights.”

Mr Khan — a hugely popular former international cricketer — was ousted by a parliamentary no-confidence vote in April 2022 after falling out with Pakistan’s powerful military leaders.

In opposition he waged an unprecedented campaign of defiance against the top brass, even alleging they plotted an assassination attempt that wounded him.

After Mr Khan’s brief detention in May sparked unrest, PTI has been the subject of a widespread crackdown, with leading figures either jailed or forced to leave the party.

The fate of politicians in Pakistan has historically ridden on their relationship with the military establishment, which has directly ruled the country for much of its history.

Analysts have said Mr Khan rose to power in 2018 with the backing of top generals, before their relations soured.

Babar said “The state is perpetrating the same tactics which were employed in 2018’s elections”, which were also marred by allegations of tampering — that time favouring Mr Khan.

Pakistan’s election commission is due to announce the final list of contesting candidates in three weeks.

PTI has pledged to appeal the more than 90 percent of their candidates they said were rejected from running.

Why is BJP shy about Places of Worship Act, asks Owaisi

Why is BJP shy about Places of Worship Act, asks Owaisi

Hyderabad: AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday asked the BJP why it is shy about the Places of Worship Act.

“It is still the law of the land. Will BJP defend its constitutionality in court or not?” he asked in a post on ‘X’.

Places of Worship Act 1991 is aimed to prohibit conversion of any place of worship and to provide for the maintenance of the religious character of any place of worship as it existed on August 15, 1947.

The Hyderabad MP posed the question in response to Amit Malvya’s post accusing him of communalising the consecration of Ram Mandir.

“Asaduddin Owaisi is doing what he does best, communalising the consecration of Ram Mandir. In 2020, two Mosques in Hyderabad, Masjid-e-Mohammadi and Masjid-e-Hashmi were demolished to build the Secretariat but Owaisi, who is Member of Parliament from the city, didn’t utter a word,” wrote Malvya.

Owaisi responded to this saying the demolished mosques were reconstructed. “The masjids were illegally demolished but reconstructed. Today, namaz is offered in them. Everyone protested the demolition, including AIMIM. The CM himself participated in the inauguration of the reopened mosques,” the AIMIM chief stated.

“This is not the case with Babri Masjid, which was first desecrated in December 1949, converted to a full-fledged temple in 1986 and demolished in December 1992. Isn’t this what you want to do with Kashi and Mathura as well? Yes there is a Supreme Court judgement. The Court is supreme but not infallible,” Owaisi added.

‘Dagna Pratha’ – a superstition among tribals that’s costing infants’ lives in MP

Bhopal:  ‘Dagna’ — a superstitious treatment ritual followed by some sections of the tribal community in Madhya Pradesh — has taken the lives of at least three infants in the past two weeks in the state.

It has been seen among the tribal communities, especially among the Baiga tribe, that if a child suffers from pneumonia or any other similar disease, the family members would prefer to go for a traditional treatment ritual called ‘Dagna’ in which the stomach of the infant would be branded with hot iron or hot bangle (‘kada’).

All three cases of infant deaths were reported from the tribal-dominated Shahdol district in the Vindhya region of Madhya Pradesh.

In the latest case, a 45-day-old infant, who was branded with hot iron and was later admitted to the government hospital in Shahdol, died last Saturday.

As per reports, the child was suffering from pneumonia and the family members followed the ‘Dagna’ process to treat him.

As per reports, over 50 marks (dots) were found on the infant’s belly and later, when his health deteriorated, he was taken to the hospital on November 21.

“The child was admitted to the PICU of the district hospital. He was unable to breathe and his ribs were found broken. He died of complications caused due to the infection,” said a doctor on condition of anonymity.

Before this, two other infants who were suffering from pneumonia and were branded with hot irons, had reportedly died last month.

New Year, new skincare resolution

New Year, new skincare resolution

New Delhi: This New Year, unlock the secrets to dewy, hydrated skin. Wave goodbye to dryness as you embark on a journey of intense hydration, ensuring your skin is well-prepared to face the challenges of the upcoming year. Almost everyone experiences dry skin when the weather cools off. Dry skin caused by dehydration is a common concern, particularly in the winter when the air is typically drier.

“The most common difference is that dehydrated skin has symptoms like dull or withered skin, itching, and a burning feeling in the eyes, whereas dry skin experiences symptoms like itching, dryness, a white coating, and pain. Skin dryness manifests as dark circles, sensitivity to light, redness, edoema, scaly skin, fine lines, and wrinkles,” says Dr. Jatin Mittal, Cosmetologist, Skin Expert and Co-founder at Abhivrit Aesthetics, New Delhi.

Now let’s understand what causes dehydrated skin. During the winter months, several elements contribute to this condition such as:

Low Humidity: Compared to warm air, cold air retains less moisture. Wintertime brings lower humidity levels and drier air. The skin may lose moisture more quickly as a result of this low humidity.

Low Temperatures: The skin’s ability to act as a barrier can be weakened by exposure to low temperatures. Dryness can result from damage to the skin’s outer layer, which makes it easier for moisture to exit.

Indoor Heating: Dry skin may be exacerbated by indoor heating systems, such as space heaters and central heating. These systems frequently lower the interior humidity, which results in a setting that further dehydrates the skin.

Hot Baths and Showers: Although they may feel soothing in the winter, hot baths and showers can deplete the skin of its natural oils. The lipid membranes in the skin may be damaged by hot water, increasing moisture loss.

Lack of Moisturization: Dehydration can result from applying moisturisers insufficiently or from using products that are inappropriate for your skin type. Moisturisers aid in retaining moisture and fortifying the skin’s barrier.

Age: The natural oil production in the skin decreases with age, leaving the skin more vulnerable to dryness. This can get worse when it’s wintertime.

Medical Conditions: Psoriasis and eczema are two examples of illnesses that can aggravate dry skin. Furthermore, negative effects from drugs or medical procedures could dehydrate the skin.

Environmental Factors: Dry skin can also be caused by other environmental factors including wind and sun exposure. The natural oils on the skin can be removed by wind, and skin damage can result from exposure to UV radiation.

Dr. Mittal advises, “It’s important to remember that a number of these factors can contribute to dry skin in some people. A multimodal strategy is typically necessary to address dry skin, encompassing lifestyle modifications, appropriate skincare practices, and in certain instances, medical intervention. It is advisable to see a skin specialist for a comprehensive assessment and individualised treatment recommendations if dry skin is severe or continues.”

Here are tips one can follow to help relieve dry skin, according to Dr. Mittal:

Hydrate from the inside: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to ensure your body stays hydrated. This helps keep your skin moisturized from the inside out.

Limit hot showers: Hot showers and baths can strip away the oils in the skin. Reducing the temperature in showers and baths is a good idea, and try to limit your time in the shower.

Avoid soaps that include sodium lauryl sulfate if possible: It’s one of the ingredients that removes natural oils from the skin. I advise staying away from soaps that create a lot of foam.

Moisturize Regularly: To seal in moisture, use a thick, nourishing moisturiser on damp skin. Keep an eye on products that have ceramides, shea butter, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid. Before using your moisturiser, think about using an oil or serum that provides moisture. This may provide an additional layer of dampness. Use a fragrance-free moisturiser; creams work better than lotions. Dr. Mittal recommends, “Ceramide-containing creams are far superior. The natural component of the skin barrier that stops water loss is ceramides.”

Select the correct products: Look for skincare items that are made especially for skin types that are sensitive or dry. Products with fragrances or alcohol should be avoided as they might be drying.

Remain consistent: When it comes to skincare, consistency is essential. Create a schedule and follow it. Be patient and give your skin some time to adjust since results might not be seen right away.

“If your skin issues persist or worsen, it’s advisable to consult with a skin specialist for personalized advice and treatment options. They can help identify any underlying causes and recommend products tailored to your skin type,” concludes Dr. Mittal.

Four Hezbollah combatants martyred in Israeli strike

According to Al-Ahed news agency, Hezbollah announced that Abdul Jalil Ali Hamza, a member of the Lebanese Resistance movement, was martyred while fighting for the liberation of the holy al-Quds city.

The martyr was dwelling in the village of Al-Khidr in the suburbs of Al-Biqa’ district in southern Lebanon.

Moreover, Hussein Ahmed Yahya known as Jawad, Musa Hassan Sheet known as Hadi, and Jihad Musa Sheet known as Abu Hussein, who all were living in the village of Kfarkela in southern Lebanon, were also martyred while fighting for this goal.

On Monday night, news media outlets reported that the Israeli regime once again pounded some areas in southern Lebanon in a missile strike.

The Israeli regime waged a bloody war against the Gaza Strip on October 7 after the Palestinian Resistance movement Hamas carried out a retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the occupying entity for its atrocities against Palestinians.

A day after that, Hezbollah and the Israeli regime have been exchanging sporadic fire.

4 Palestinians Killed In Clashes As Israel Troops Raid West Bank: Report

Israeli troops searched homes and businesses, and took surveillance footage (File)

West Bank, Gaza:

Israeli troops killed four Palestinians during a raid in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, sources on both sides said, with the army describing the four as “terrorists”.

“Four Palestinians were martyred by occupation bullets in the town of Azzun,” the Palestinian health ministry said.

The official Wafa news agency said the men were shot dead when clashes erupted as Israeli troops raided the town.

“Israeli occupation soldiers fired live ammunition, stun grenades, and tear gas at residents during the raid,” the report said.

Israeli troops searched homes and businesses, and took surveillance footage from several shops, Wafa reported.

The army said troops had returned fire after fighters shot at them and threw explosives.

“At the end of an exchange of fire, they killed four terrorists and confiscated three Carlo-type weapons (locally produced submachine guns) that were used by them,” the army said in a statement.

A soldier was moderately wounded, it added.

In a separate exchange of fire, troops “neutralised” a Palestinian fighter who fired at them in the town of Qalqilya, the army said without elaborating.

Israeli forces made seven arrests in the West Bank overnight, the army said, adding that more than 2,550 people have been arrested in the territory since the Israel-Hamas war erupted.

The West Bank has been under Israeli military occupation since the Six-Day War of 1967 and tensions have escalated since the outbreak of fighting between Israel and Hamas.

Since October 7, at least 321 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank by Israeli troops or settlers, according to the Palestinian health ministry. More than 520 Palestinians were killed in the territory last year.

Maduro hopes Venezuela will join BRICS in 2024

“At the summit in South Africa, Venezuela was accepted as a partner. And I hope that at the next summit in Russia <…> Venezuela will join BRICS+ as a permanent member,” Maduro said in a traditional interview on January 1 with the newspaper Le Monde diplomatique, TASS reports.

He stressed that “BRICS is the future of humanity,” pointing at the economic potential of the group and the capabilities of the New BRICS Development Bank.

“We are betting on BRICS as part of a new world, a new balance, as part of the Bolivarian geopolitical concept, a world of balance, a world of equals,” Maduro concluded.

BRICS was formed in 2006 and initially included Brazil, Russia, India and China. South Africa joined the intergovernmental organization in 2011. In August 2023, six new members were invited to join the association, including Argentina, but at the end of December it refused to join the group. Five new members (Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia) began full-fledged work in BRICS on January 1 under the chairmanship of Russia.

Tel Aviv violates Syrian sovereignty, strikes near Damascus

The Zionist regime violated Syria’s sovereignty on the second day of 2024 when it conducted an air raid against a number of locations in the countryside of Damascus.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), a Syrian military source noted that at 4:35 am (local time) on January 2, 2024, the “Israeli enemy carried out an air aggression from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting a number of points in the Damascus countryside.”

The statement further stressed that the aggression “resulted in some material damages” with no mention of any martyrs or wounded.

This aggression follows an earlier raid that targeted Aleppo, Syria, earlier on Saturday. The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced that the Israeli occupation targeted several areas to the south of the city of Aleppo in northern Syria, at around 5:20 PM (local time).

The aerial aggression was conducted through the Mediterranean, to the west of the country, the ministry added.

Three civilians were killed as a result of the attack which targeted farmland in Aleppo’s countryside, while two other civilians were injured.
