Attack had made Kotha Prabhakar Reddy think of opting out of polls: Harish Rao

Finance Minister T Harish Rao is addressing Party cadre during a Thanksgiving meeting in Dubbak on Tuesday.

Siddipet: Former Minister T Harish Rao on Tuesday said Dubbak MLA Kotha Prabhakar Reddy had thought of staying away from the assembly elections after the attack on him during the election campaign on October 30.

Addressing a meeting of the Dubbak BRS workers in Dubbak on Tuesday, Harish Rao said Prabhakar Reddy told him this a day after the attack on him while in hospital.

When he tried to convince Prabhakar Reddy, the latter sought a day to take a decision. Since Prabhakar Reddy was known to be an affable person, he was mentally hurt by the attack, he said, adding the Reddy finally accepted to go ahead with contesting in the elections. Stating that BRS workers had put collective work into the campaign, Harish Rao credited the victory by a majority of 53,000 votes to the Dubbak party cadre.

Asking the cadre to consider the defeat of the party in the assembly election as a mere speedbreaker to the BRS progress, the former Minister said the party would correct its mistakes to emerge strong in the days to come. Saying that the Congress had made 413 promises under the Six Guarantees, he said the Congress would stand no right to seek votes during the Lok Sabha elections unless it kept its promises before the deadline of 100 days.

Stating that the people of Telangana would certainly recognise the work of the BRS at some point during the Congress rule, Rao said they would compare the commitment of each party as time progresses. However, the BRS would remain the only voice for Telangana at the national level while both the national parties were working with the single agenda of forming their party’s government at the Centre.

Kotha Prabhakar Reddy, MLC Dr V Yadava Reddy and others were present.

New Delhi: A total of 312 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been detected in the country so far, with about 47 per cent of them recorded in Kerala, according to the INSACOG’s data updated on Tuesday.

Ten states and Union territories have so far detected the presence of the JN.1 sub-variant of the virus.

These states are Kerala (147), Goa (51), Gujarat (34), Maharashtra (26), Tamil Nadu (22), Delhi (16), Karnataka (eight), Rajasthan (five), Telangana (two) and Odisha (one), according to the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).

The INSACOG’s data showed 279 Covid cases recorded in the country in December had the presence of JN.1, while 33 such cases were detected in November.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified JN.1 as a separate “variant of interest” given its rapidly-increasing spread, but said it poses a “low” global public health risk.

The JN.1 sub-variant of the coronavirus was previously classified as a variant of interest (VOI) as part of the BA.2.86 sub-lineages, the parent lineage that is classified as a VOI, the world body said.

However, in recent weeks, JN.1 cases continued to be reported from multiple countries and its prevalence has rapidly increased globally.

The Centre has asked states and Union territories to maintain a constant vigil amid an uptick in the number of Covid cases and the detection of the JN.1 sub-variant in the country.

India has recorded 573 new coronavirus infections, while the active cases stood at 4,565, according to data released by the Health ministry on Tuesday.

Stalemate over NSP continues, maintenance works come to standstill

Stalemate over NSP continues, maintenance works come to standstill

Hyderabad: The much needed regular maintenance works on the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam have come to a standstill with the stalemate continuing over operational control of the project. Andhra Pradesh had forcibly taken over control of 13 of the dam crest gates on its end and it was in no mood to relent.

The maintenance works taken up by Telangana on the joint project were halfway through in respect of certain components. The dam site, which has been handed over to the CRPF for protection and surveillance in the first week of December, is not accessible to the Operations and Maintenance wing of Telangana.

“The operations and maintenance works grounded on the dam are in a standstill. The material collected for changing the track 125T/25T Gantry cranes are spread over the entire dam right from Gate no 1 to Gate No 26. Works on automation the gates were also help up because of the standoff,” officials said.

The only maintenance work undertaken up in the recent months was the replacement of rubber seals for the sluice gates of the hydel units on the AP side. Telangana had replaced nine gates on the AP side as it was tasked with the operational control of the entire project. It had spent over Rs.70 crore on dam maintenance.

AP officials had taken over even the flood control room located on the right side of the dam between gate no 14 to Gate No 26. AP had claimed that the location falls under its jurisdiction. Telangana officials were forced to leave the flood control room. The KRMB should have intervened taking the issue seriously, but it did not, officials said.

The State Dam Safety Organisation (SDSO) and the operations and maintenance wing had repeatedly been writing to the National Dam Safety organisation and the Krishna River Management Board on the issue. The O&M wing sought to know for itself who would take up the maintenance works.

Officials said they were yet to get complete clarity on the issue. It was not known whether the KRMB would task itself with the operations and maintenance as in the case of the Tungabhadra River Management Board. The KRMB has to overcome its constraints in respect of budget and manpower to shoulder such tasks, said officials.

In a letter addressed to the KRMB chairman, TS Engineer-in-Chief (General) C Muralidhar Rao sought restoration of status quo position as on pre-November 28 position immediately.

As directed by the Ministry of Home in the aftermath of the November 29 face off between the police forces of both Telangana and AP states, the KRMB was expected to help restore status quo on the dam site. All the issues pertaining to operations and maintenance of the dam should be resolved at a high level meeting to be held shortly with the Chief Secretaries of both States, officials said.

Passengers escape from the inflatable ramp of a burning Japan Airlines (JAL) Airbus A350

New Delhi:

Visuals have emerged showing how over 350 passengers of a Japan Airlines aircraft escaped from the plane after it caught fire on the runway in Tokyo-Haneda airport.

The JAL aircraft, an Airbus A350, had collided with a turboprop aircraft of Japan’s Coast Guard while it was de-accelerating after landing.

Global aviation safety website JACDED posted a video of passengers sliding down the inflatable ramp above one of the wings. One of the engines was still running while the passengers slid down the slide.

All 367 passengers and 12 crew onboard the Airbus plane were evacuated, broadcaster NHK reported. Those onboard included eight children, Kyodo News reported.

There were six people in the coast guard plane. One of them was rescued, while the rest five were killed.

Jiji news agency reported the coast guard plane was scheduled to leave to help with rescue efforts following a massive earthquake in central Japan on Monday. Reports said the plane had just arrived from Sapporo airport on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

Footage apparently shot by a passenger inside the Airbus aircraft showed flames coming from underneath it before the cabin fills with smoke.

More than 70 fire engines were being deployed, NHK reported.

Japan has not suffered a serious commercial aviation accident in decades. Its worst ever was in 1985, when a JAL jumbo jet flying from Tokyo to Osaka crashed in central Gunma region, killing 520 passengers and crew.

That disaster was one of the world’s deadliest plane crashes involving a single flight.

Petrol pumps in Hyderabad expected to return to normal on Wednesday

Hyderabad: Oil tanker operators reportedly called off the strike on Tuesday evening, raising hopes of an end to the fuel shortage in Hyderabad.

G Vinay Kumar, President of the Telangana State Petrol Dealers Association, stated that the situation at fuel stations in the city might normalize by Wednesday noon with the resumption of supply.

Long queues were witnessed at petrol pumps in Hyderabad due to truck drivers’ protests against a provision in the new penal law related to hit-and-run accidents. The protests caused disruptions in petrol and diesel supply across the state, affecting fuel availability in the city.
