Siraj trends on social media after scalping 6 wickets against SA

Hyderabad: Mohammed Siraj rose to the occasion for India when the team needed him the most. His brilliance with the ball helped India bundle out the host South African team for 55 runs in the ongoing second Test match.

Siraj made the best use of the bouncy pitch, grabbing six wickets in 9 overs.

After winning the toss and deciding to bat first, the Proteas struggled to score runs as Indian bowlers gave them no space to breathe, consistently chipping in with quick wickets.

Siraj was well supported by Bumrah and Mukesh, who each scalped two wickets.

The Hyderabad bowler claimed the wickets of Aiden Markram, Dean Elgar, Tony de Zorzi, Bedingham, Verreynne, and Jansen to grab his six-fer.

His fans in India are leaving no stone unturned in praising him on social media platforms, particularly X, formerly known as Twitter.

Here’s how his fans reacted to his performance:

11 Balls, 6 wickets, 0 Runs: India Suffer Spectacular Collapse vs SA

It was one of those days, where unexpected things were always round the corner in Cape Town. On a bright sunny morning on Wednesday, South Africa capitulated for just 55 with fast bowler Mohammed Siraj breathing fire. He took six wickets as India bowled out its rivals for the lowest score ever by any team against the side. However, that was just the first part of the thriller that was about to unfold. India were expected to take a huge lead. Though the Rohit Sharma-led side took the lead comfortably, the incidents that began to unravel from the 34th over of the Indian innings was beyond any explanation.

With the scoreboard reading 153/4, Lungi Ngidi first scalped KL Rahul. In the same over, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah departed too. In the next over. Kagiso Rabada removed Virat Kohli and Prasidh KrishnaMukesh Kumar was run out. In a space of 11 balls, India lost the last six wickets without adding any run.

This is the most number of wickets that has ever fallen on a particular score in a Test innings. Since the time Test cricket started in 1877, no other team has lost more than five wickets in the format on one particular score.

Before this there were four instances where five wickets fell on a particular score.

Former Indian cricket team coach Ravi Shastri described the scene in the most hilarious way possible. Hear it for yourself.

Talking about the match, India collapsed to 153 all out in their first innings in the final session after skittling out South Africa for 55 on the opening day of the second and final Test on Wednesday. Virat Kohli top-scored with 46 while captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill made 39 and 36 respectively. India faced just 34.5 overs. They had resumed the post-tea session at 111 for 4.

Earlier, pacer Mohammed Siraj ripped through the South Africa batting line-up with a sensational six-wicket haul as India bowled the home side at stroke of lunch.

Captain Dean Elgar‘s decision to bat first after winning the toss in his farewell Test turned out to be a nightmare for the home side.

Kyle Verreynne made 15 and David Bedingham 12 as all the other remaining South African batters were dismissed for single-digit scores.

Brief Scores: South Africa: 55 all out in 23.2 overs (Kyle Verreynne 15; Mohammed Siraj 6/15).

India: 153 all out in 34.5 overs (Virat Kohli 46, Rohit Sharma 39, Shubman Gill 36; Lungi Ngidi 3/30, Kagiso Rabada 3/38, Nandre Burger 3/42).

Guwahati:

The Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Assam’s Guwahati handled around 5.6 million passengers in 2023, an increase of a million compared to figures from 2022 when the airport handled 4.6 million passengers.

In 2023, the airport run by Adani Airports handled around 2.9 million arriving passengers and 2.7 million were departing fliers.

“We are happy that in the recent calendar year 2023, we have exceeded the previous year’s passengers number by 10 lakh, with a 17 per cent growth, one of the highest in the country. We are happy because we could handle this volume in a terminal that has less than half the passenger handling capacity. We are waiting eagerly to commission the new terminal this year that has double capacity than our current demand. We will have connectivity with Jaipur, Bhubaneswar and Bangkok this year and working with a few more domestic and international destinations this year,” said Utpal Baruah, the Chief Airport Officer (CAO), at Adani LGBI Airport.

The airport has witnessed an increase of 5,600 flights when compared to 2022.

Last year, the airport had domestic connectivity with Jaipur and Bhubaneswar and Bangkok was the only international destination connected with the airport.

'If They Don't Offer Discount...': India As Russian Oil Imports Drop

Hardeep Singh Puri said India buys 1.5 million barrels per day of Russian oil on average (File)

New Delhi:

India’s oil imports from Russia fell due to unattractive pricing and not because of payment problems, Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Wednesday.

“There is no payment problem … It is a pure function of the price at which our refineries will buy,” Mr Puri told a press conference.

India’s December Russian oil imports fell to an 11-month low as five ships loaded with light sweet Sokol grade headed to other locations after the US imposed sanctions on some vessels and shippers for not complying with the G7-fixed $60 per barrel price caps for oil at Russian ports.

“India’s leadership has only one requirement that the Indian consumer gets the energy at the most economical price, without disruption,” he said, adding on an average India buys 1.5 million barrels per day of Russian oil.

He said oil companies have not yet complained to him about facing any problems in settling payments for oil imports.

“If they (Russia) don’t offer us (good) discount why would we buy from them,” Mr Puri said in Hindi, adding that new oil producers in far flung regions are willing to offer better discounts than Russia on crude sales.

He refused to elaborate on new suppliers that are offering better prices.

India, the world’s third biggest oil importer and consumer, has emerged as a top buyer of sea-borne Russian oil sold at a discount after Western entities retreated following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

He said the global markets have plenty of oil and there would be no supply constraints.

IIT-H ready to make bricks, organic fertilizers from waste

Sangareddy MLA Chintha Prabhakar is talking to IIT-H Director Prof BS Murty at Institute campus at Kandi in Sangareddy district on Wednesday.

Sangareddy: Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIT-H) Director Prof BS Murty has sought support from the Sangareddy district administration to convert waste produced in Kandi mandal into organic fertilizer and manufacturing bricks with the remaining waste.

Talking to Sangareddy MLA Chintha Prabhakar, who visited IIT-H to meet the Director on Wednesday, Prof Murty said they would build a shed in the dumpyard where they could make organic fertiliser and bricks out of waste. Since it would restrict waste piling up at the dumping yard, Prabhakar assured him to take the issue up with the District Collector and get the work done.

The Sangareddy MLA urged the IIT-H Director to adopt more government schools in and around the IIT to support and guide poor students going to government schools. Since the IIT-H has already adopted five schools, the MLA urged the Director to adopt another 10 schools for the benefit of students.

Lahore: Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister Imran Khan on Wednesday challenged the rejection of his nomination papers for two National Assembly seats in Punjab in the run-up to the February 8 polls in the Lahore High Court’s tribunal.

The returning officer (RO) Lahore on Saturday rejected the nomination papers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supremo for two National Assembly seats in Lahore and Mianwali districts of Punjab on “moral grounds and being convicted in the Toshakhana (national treasury gifts) corruption case.”

On Wednesday, Khan, through his counsels, challenged the RO’s decision to reject his nomination papers for NA-122 Lahore and NA-89 Mianwali contending the conviction of the Toshakhana case has no link with his disqualification under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution, therefore, his nomination papers cannot be rejected.

Khan said the RO had also raised objections on his proposers and seconders not belonging to the constituencies he is contesting from. “Both the proposers and seconders belong to NA-122 and NA-89 (and) this objection of the ROs hold no ground,” Khan said and pleaded before the court to set aside the RO’s decision and allow him to contest the February 8 polls from those same two constituencies.

Khan, 71, has been languishing in Adiala jail under different cases since August 2023. Wednesday was the last date to challenge the ROs’ decisions. The election body had rejected nomination papers of 90 per cent of important PTI leaders on what the party described as “flimsy grounds,” mostly in Punjab.

Khan’s party said more than 3,200 candidates’ nomination papers, mostly of PTI, were rejected. Almost all such candidates have challenged the ROs’ decisions in the tribunals of the high court. The PTI has alleged that the ROs, who are bureaucrats, have en mass rejected the nomination papers of the PTI leaders from across the country apparently on the direction of the ‘military establishment’.

Israel’s far-right minister doubles down on forced expulsion of Palestinian from Gaza

Israeli right-wing minister Itamar Ben-Gvir says the regime of prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu should “encourage the migration” of Gazans out of the besieged Palestinian territory.

The Israeli occupation forces continued to order Palestinians to leave their homes in the besieged Gaza Strip. Israeli warplanes on Wednesday kept dropping leaflets calling on civilians in several areas in Khan Younis to move.

“I fled from Gaza City to the Qizan Al-Najjar area after the ground invasion began. Qizan Al-Najjar, between Rafah City and Khan Younis, was marked safe earlier,” Middle East Eye quoted Younus, a Palestinian man, as saying.

“Three days ago, we received another leaflet to leave Block 87. Today, they added Blocks 83, 84, and 86. I am in Block 85. It was not on the list of blocks to flee, but we are only one street apart from block 86, which makes it very difficult to stay in the middle of the bombardment.”

“At the same time, we do not have any other place to relocate to.  Many people fled from Al-Batn Al-Sameen, near Nasser Hospital. We think Israel wants to launch a ground invasion near Nasser Hospital and this is why they force people to leave.”

The besieged strip has been devastated by a three-month bombing campaign that has internally displaced around 90% of the territory’s population.

Amid its military offensive on Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip, the Israeli military had repeatedly dropped leaflets telling residents they must leave their homes and “evacuate” to areas it claims are safer, which are south of the Wadi Gaza wetlands.

Families risked journeys through the blasted landscape of destroyed buildings and corpses, along the road that Israel had designated as a “humanitarian corridor” through the aggression.

But what awaits Palestinians who move south is still life-threatening. The “evacuation” areas are both heavily bombarded and in a dire humanitarian crisis.

Israeli bombardment has killed thousands of civilians in the areas of the Gaza Strip that Israel has ordered them to move to.

The latest move comes as Ben-Gvir, who has previously been convicted of supporting terrorism and inciting racism, recently said the war presents an “opportunity to concentrate on encouraging the migration of the residents of Gaza,” branding such a policy as “a correct, just, moral and humane solution.”

Similarly, speaking on Monday, Israel’s far-right finance minister Bezalel Smotrich said that the regime “will permanently control the Gaza Strip to ensure security”.

He stressed that the objective would be achieved through the “permanent presence of Israeli forces” along with “establishing Jewish settlements,” adding that he would present the plan soon to the regime’s war cabinet.

Veteran Arab lawmaker at the Israeli parliament Ahmad Tibi  has condemned Ben-Gvir, saying their rhetoric was “inciting genocide.”

“A day will come and these two senior ministers in the Israeli government will stand before an international tribunal for war crimes,” he stated.

Israel minister slams US for condemning call for mass exodus of Gazans

Ben-Gvir has hit back at ally the United States over its criticism of his push for the transfer of Gazans out of Palestinian territory.

“The United States is our best friend, but first of all we will do what is best for the State of Israel: the migration of hundreds of thousands from Gaza will allow the (Israeli) residents of the envelope to return home and live in security and will protect the (Israeli) soldiers,” the far-right minister posted on X late Tuesday.

Palestinians say the West Bank and the Gaza Strip are one indivisible geographical unit.

Most Palestinians displaced from their homeland after the Nakba (Catastrophe), when Israel proclaimed its illegal existence on May 15, 1948, have ended up in neighboring Arab states.

Arab leaders have maintained that any latter-day move aimed at forced expulsion of Palestinians would be unacceptable.

The relentless Israeli military campaign against Gaza has killed at least 22,200 people, most of them women and children. More than 57,000 individuals have also been wounded.

However, almost three months into the war, Tel Aviv has failed to achieve its declared objective of eliminating Hamas and finding Israeli captives in Gaza.

"More Than Vindication": Harish Salve On Supreme Court's Hindenburg Order

'More Than Vindication': Harish Salve On Supreme Court's Hindenburg Order

“It restores the importance of the rule of law and separation of powers,” Harish Salve said.

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court judgment backing the Securities and Exchanges Board of India or SEBI in the Hindenburg allegations against the Adani Group makes it clear that the rule of law has made a comeback, veteran lawyer Harish Salve said today.

The former Attorney General also said the other high point of the judgment is the underscoring of the separation of powers, which in the long run, will help democracy flourish. “In the long run, democracy cannot survive if these two vital principles are sidestepped,” he said.

In an exclusive interview to NDTV this evening, Mr Salve, who has represented India many times in international courts, said the judgment is “more than just a vindication” for the Adani Group.

“It restores the importance of the rule of law and separation of powers,” Mr Salve said, citing how in the years after 2014, there was an atmosphere of distrust in the country following allegations of scams.

“The rule of law became a casualty. The principle of separation of powers was breached when courts started to interfere with the investigating agencies and regulatory agencies,” he added, declaring that took nine years for the restoration of constitutional powers.

In its judgment today, a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said the allegations of OCCRP – an organisation funded by billionaire George Soros and others – can’t be the basis for doubting SEBI’s investigation into the Hindenburg case.

The SEBI has investigated 22 out of the 24 cases linked to the allegations of US-based short seller Hindenburg Research.

Responding to the petitioners’ appeal for the case to be transferred, the bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, said the power to transfer investigation “must be exercised in exceptional circumstances”.

“Such powers cannot be exercised in the absence of cogent justifications,” the court said, remarking that there is no evidence to justify such a transfer.

The SEBI has been given three months to complete investigation in the remaining two cases.

“The rule of law is supreme” and under it, unsubstantiated allegations can only be treated as inputs and not evidence, by the regulatory agencies,” Mr Salve said.

Telangana: Tummala tells officials to speed up Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project works

Telangana: Tummala tells officials to speed up Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project works

Minister T Nageswara Rao inspected Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project works in Dummugudem mandal in Kothagudem district on Wednesday.

Kothagudem: Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao directed the officials to speed up the works of Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project meant to lift water from river Godavari to irrigate lands in erstwhile Khammam.

He along with Khammam and Kothagudem district Collectors VP Gautham and Dr. Priyanka Ala inspected Gandugulapalli pump house works in Dammapet mandal in the district on Wednesday.

The minister said the project was taken up with an estimation of Rs 13,500 crore and Rs 7,000 crore was spent so far. The construction of three pump houses was complete and the fourth pump house at Gandugulapalli would be completed soon.

Nageswara Rao told the irrigation officials that tunnel works taken up as part of the project were going on at slow pace. Modern technology has to be used to expedite the work. By completing Yatalakunta tunnel water could be lifted to Sathupalli trunk canal and Lanka Sagar Project, he said.

The process of land acquisition and diversion of forest land, tunnel works and Genco power house tender works have to be completed at the earliest. Steps were being taken to irrigate lands in Wyra and its lower parts by this monsoon so that crops would not suffer even if water was not released from Nagarjuna Sagar Project.

It was essential to complete the works of Wyra reservoir link canal works to supply water to lands in Wyra in this year. As another tunnel has to be constructed, the matter would be discussed with officials as its construction enables lifting water to Palair, Nageswara Rao said.

He told officials to prepare proposals for approval for Sitamma Sagar power house and third tunnel as well as forest land diversion. As many as 1.50 lakh acres would be irrigated this year and another 1.50 lakh acres of land would be supplied water in the next year.

Protection bunds would be constructed to prevent submergence of villages on either side of Sitamma Sagar Project. The bunds would protect the villages even if there was flood level of 63 feet in Godavari.
