SKY In Running For ICC Men's T20 Cricketer of Year, Jaiswal For Emerging

India star Suryakumar Yadav was on Wednesday named as one of the four nominees for the ICC Men’s T20 Cricketer of the Year 2023. The 33-year-old Indian, who won the accolade in 2022, dominated 2023 in the shortest format with 733 runs from 17 innings at an average of 48.86 and strike rate of 155.95. Young India opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal was also named as one of the four nominees for the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2023.

The 22-year-old Jaiswal scored 283 Test runs at 70.75 average and made 430 T20I runs at 33.07 and strike rate of 159.25 during the year. He is pitted against Rachin Ravindra (New Zealand), Gerald Coetzee (South Africa) and Dilshan Madushanka (Sri Lanka). Suryakumar’s first innings of just 7 to start 2023 against Sri Lanka was a mere speed bump in another prolific year, making scores of 51 (36 balls) and 112 not out (51 balls) in the next two matches.

With a range of his inside-out drives and clever play behind the wicket, Suryakumar’s knock of 112 off 51 balls included nine sixes and seven fours, equating to almost a boundary every three deliveries.

His first boundary came off just the fourth ball of his innings, and it took just 45 balls to reach three figures. The effort was the second-fastest hundred for India in men’s T20s behind Rohit Sharma‘s 35-ball effort against the same opponent in 2017, and India were clear 91-run winners.

Consistent scoring in 20s to 40s continued, before an innings of 83 (44 balls) against the West Indies in Providence proved his class. He ended the series against the West Indies with a knock of 61 (45 balls) in Florida.

Suryakumar flourished despite the burden of captaincy, taking the reins of a young Indian side towards the end of the year.

He made half-centuries against Australia (80 off 42 balls) and South Africa (56 from 36 balls), before posting an even 100 against the Proteas off just 56 balls in their final T20 of the year in Johannesburg.

The other three nominees are Sikandar Raza of Zimbabwe (11 innings, 515 runs at 51.50, strike rate 150.14; 17 wickets at 14.88, economy 6.57), Alpesh Ramjani of Uganda (55 wickets at 8.98, economy 4.77) and Mark Chapman of New Zealand (17 innings, 556 runs at 50.54, strike rate 145.54).

New York:

A cleric was shot outside a mosque not far from New York on Wednesday and is in a critical condition, police said.

Police in the city of Newark, New Jersey, did not give a motive for the incident.

Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Frage confirmed “police responded to a call of a male shot” Wednesday morning.

Frage said the victim was taken to a local hospital and “is reportedly in critical condition.”

Officers confirmed that the man was the cleric, and that the incident happened outside a mosque. An investigation has been launched.

Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war, there has been an increase in Islamophobic and anti-Semitic attacks across the United States.

Images published by the New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) showed police vehicles deployed outside the Masjid Muhammad-Newark mosque, a two-story yellow and green complex.

“We are deeply concerned about this incident and pray for the speedy recovery of the cleric. Anyone with information about the shooting should immediately contact local police,” said CAIR New Jersey communications manager Dina Sayedahmed.

G20 Portal Saw 16 Lakh Cyberattacks A Minute During Summit In Sept: Centre

The G20 summit was held in India from September 9-10 last year(Representational)

New DelhI:

The Indian cybersecurity sector repelled numerous cyberattack attempts on the G20 portal during the summit and 16 lakh DDoS attacks per minute peaked at some point.

Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) CEO Rajesh Kumar made the revelation during the annual conference. The I4C wing, which was established by the Ministry of Home Affairs, aims to provide a framework and eco-system for Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) to deal with cybercrime in a coordinated and comprehensive manner.

Responding to a query, Kumar said per minute, 16 lakh attacks were noted on the G20 account during the summit, and it started soon after the website was up and the attacks peaked during the summit.

He further clarified that the I4C, with the help of multiple Indian agencies concerned, managed to thwart these attacks and keep the website safe.

The officer raised concerns about some non-national foreign threat actors operating through the Virtual Private Network (VPN), showing their attempts from China, Cambodia and Malaysia. But he said it is very difficult to say the exact place, as VPN networks disguise the identity of the hacker’s real place.

As per cyber experts, non-national threat actors send Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) to disrupt and try to sabotage any site. These attacks could have originated from foreign countries.

The G20 summit was the eighteenth meeting of the G20. It was held in Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition-Convention Centre on September 9-10 last year.

Addressing the conference, Kumar also said more than 31 lakh cybercrime complaints have been registered so far on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) since it was launched in August 2019.

Based on these complaints, he also said that more than 66,000 FIRs have been registered by Law Enforcement Agencies of states and union territories.

The officer said that an analytical report on the modus operandi of the top 50 cyber-attacks has been prepared by the I4C wing during 2023.

With the help of National Cyber Helpline Number 1930, Kumar said, the concerned agencies helped save over Rs 1,100 crore in defrauded money in three years by benefiting 4.3 lakh victims.

SpaceX Illegally Fired Workers Critical Of Elon Musk, US Labor Agency Says

SpaceX on Wednesday was accused by a U.S. labor agency of unlawfully firing eight employees.

Washington:

Rocket and satellite maker SpaceX on Wednesday was accused by a U.S. labor agency of unlawfully firing eight employees for circulating a letter calling founder and CEO Elon Musk a “distraction and embarrassment.”

A regional official with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) issued a complaint claiming SpaceX violated the workers’ rights under federal labor law to band together and advocate for better working conditions, according to Kayla Blado, a spokeswoman for the agency.

The letter sent to SpaceX executives in June 2022 focused on a series of tweets Musk had made since 2020, many of which were sexually suggestive.

The employees claimed Musk’s statements did not align with the company’s policies on diversity and workplace misconduct, and called on SpaceX to condemn them.

Arvind Kejriwal To Be Arrested Today? AAP Leaders Raise Alarm

Arvind Kejriwal To Be Arrested Today? AAP Leaders Raise Alarm

New Delhi:

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal could be arrested in the morning following a raid at his home, leaders of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party tweeted hours after he refused to appear for questioning in the alleged Delhi liquor scam. Party sources said they are ready for any eventuality. Sources in the Enforcement Directorate – the central agency probing the money laundering angle, which has called Mr Kejriwal for questioning several times — have said they have no such information.

“News coming in that ED is going to raid @ArvindKejriwal’s residence tmrw morning. Arrest likely,” posted senior party leader and Delhi minister Aatishi on X, formerly Twitter.

Similar posts were seen on the handles of senior party leaders Saurabh Bhardwaj, Jasmine Shah and Sandeep Pathak.

Mr Kejriwal has skipped summons for questioning thrice. The last time he refused to appear was today. He had also refused to appear before the probe agency on November 2 and December 21. Under the rules, a non-bailable warrant can be issued against him any time and he can be arrested.

In April, he was questioned for nine hours by the Central Bureau of Investigation. He has not been named as an accused in the case.

Mr Kejriwal insists that the summons are “motivated” and says it is not clear whether he is being called as a witness or a suspect in the case. His party said it was a plan to stop him from campaigning in the national election due later this year.

With three of its leaders — Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh and Satyendra Jain — behind the bars, AAP has long been anticipating the eventuality and has discussed the possible courses of action.  They even want Mr Kejriwal to remain the Chief Minister and do his job from jail.

The CBI contends that liquor companies were involved in framing the excise policy, which would have brought them a 12 per cent profit. A liquor lobby it dubbed the “South Group” had paid kickbacks, part of which was routed to public servants. The Enforcement Directorate alleged laundering of the kickbacks.

The BJP has alleged that the proceeds of the alleged scam were used by the AAP to fund its large-scale campaign in Gujarat, in which it got a 12.91 per cent votes and established itself as a national party.

The party has also taken a swipe at the Delhi Chief Minister, saying he is “shaking in fear” and is not appearing before the agency because he knows that he is the “kingpin” of the alleged liquor policy scam.

Prompt response mechanism and not compromising with building bylaws are the most important lessons from Japan

Japan’s level of preparedness to face natural disasters is worth emulating. The recent efforts to withstand the shock from a massive earthquake and tsunami deserve appreciation from the rest of the world. Despite being hit by a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale followed by over 155 smaller tremors and tsunami waves up to one metre high along the Sea of Japan coast on New Year’s Day, Japan has been successful in minimising the human loss and damage to vital installations. Most of the buildings in the affected areas of central and western Japan withstood the severe jolts. Being the most quake-prone country in the world, it has invested heavily in technology to make its infrastructure quake-proof and establish a quick and efficient response mechanism for such disasters. Countries like India have much to learn from Japan. The lessons range from quake preparedness to a prompt response mechanism, including issuing timely alerts. Most significantly, it is about not compromising with building bylaws related to quake resistance. Japan makes it a point to update the mitigating measures after every massive quake. The first quake-resistant building code was drawn up after the 1923 disaster. The 2011 earthquake, which sparked a tsunami, leaving over 18,000 dead, provided vital clues to dealing with the double whammy of the earth shaking and sea waves crashing inland. Japan was well equipped to deal with the seismic activity. While the recent earthquake-tsunami did cause fires and buildings to wobble violently, with some collapsing, and roads cracking open, hampering rescue operations, the upheaval was handled extremely well.

The expertise of the Japanese administration was on display as they virtually raced against time to restore power supply and communication services. Nearly one lakh people were evacuated to sports halls and school gymnasiums that double up as emergency evacuation buildings. The country’s tsunami warning system won a seemingly impossible race against giant ocean waves. Japan’s timing is significant for countries such as India and Sri Lanka because the nearest fault line in the Indian Ocean lies near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The latest destruction brought back memories of the 2004 tsunami, one of the worst disasters of the century, shattering millions of lives. It remains a sombre reminder of the fragility of human life in the face of nature’s fury. It underscored the importance of international solidarity and the need for collective action in the face of disaster. The lessons learnt from that fateful day continue to shape disaster management programmes worldwide. India established a tsunami early warning system in October 2007. The Early Warning Centre receives real-time seismic data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and other international bodies. In India, there are several seismologically vulnerable regions, including the Himalayas where there is a high possibility of occurrence of major earthquakes.

Sri Lanka Name Different Captains For Test, ODI And T20 Sides

Sri Lanka cricket selectors Wednesday named different captains for the Test, one-day international and Twenty20 sides ahead of tours by Zimbabwe and Afghanistan. Batting all-rounder Dhananjaya de Silva, 32, will be Test skipper while Kusal Mendis, 28, will lead the ODI team and Wanidu Hasaranga, 26, will captain the Twenty20 squad. It is the first time that Sri Lanka will have separate skippers for all three formats.

“I would have preferred to have the same captain for all three formats,” chief selector Upul Tharanga told reporters in Colombo. But we are unable to do that at the moment with the players we have.”

Selectors had resolved to retain Mendis through to the next ODI World Cup in 2027, Tharanga said, despite finishing second from bottom at last year’s showpiece in India.

Mendis took over after the last-minute injury withdrawal of Dasun Shanaka and Tharanga said Shanaka had not considered for the captaincy due to performance issues over the past two years.

Hasaranga will lead the side for the T20 World Cup starting in June in the West Indies and United States.

The latest selection announcement came ahead of white ball series against Zimbabwe starting Saturday.

Following that Sri Lanka will host Afghanistan for three T20s, three ODIs and one Test match.

Sri Lanka ODI squad to play Zimbabwe: Kusal Mendis (captain), Charith Asalanka, Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Sahan Arachchige, Maheesh Theekshana, Dilshan Madushanka, Dushmantha Chameera, Dunith Wellalage, Pramod Madushan, Jeffrey Vandersay, Akila Dananjaya, Wanidu Hasaranga.

US, Allies Warn Houthi Rebels Of 'Consequences' If Ship Attacks Continue

It comes after President Biden’s administration is considering direct strikes on the rebels.

Washington:

Twelve nations led by the United States on Wednesday jointly warned Yemen’s Houthi rebels of unspecified consequences unless they halt attacks on Red Sea shipping vessels.

“Let our message now be clear: we call for the immediate end of these illegal attacks and release of unlawfully detained vessels and crews,” said the statement released by the White House.

“The Huthis will bear the responsibility of the consequences should they continue to threaten lives, the global economy and the free flow of commerce in the region’s critical waterways.”

The statement comes after several reports that President Joe Biden’s administration is considering direct strikes on the rebels if the attacks continue.

Signatories of the statement included Britain, which on Monday issued its own warning to the Huthis of “direct action,” as well as Australia, Canada, Germany and Japan.

The only regional country to sign was Bahrain, the tiny Gulf state that has particularly tense relations with Iran, which supports the Huthis.

The Houthis say they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza by targeting ships with links to Israel.

The United States has sent an aircraft carrier, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, to the area and earlier announced a coalition of countries to protect movement in the Red Sea, through which 12 per cent of global trade passes.
