Wipro likely to cut hundreds of mid-level jobs

New Delhi: Software major Wipro is likely to cut hundreds of mid-level jobs, as the company looks to improve its margins, the media reported.

In a statement to CNBC-TV18, a company’s spokesperson said, “We are committed to investing in our people, processes and technology to drive better client and employee experiences and enhance productivity and agility across our organisation to meet fast-evolving client and market needs”.

The spokesperson also said that aligning talent and business to market conditions is an essential part of the firm’s strategy, as it aims to create a resilient, agile, and high-performing organisation.

This comes just weeks after the company announced its October to December quarter results, which revealed that its total headcount fell by 4,473 employees. This was the fifth consecutive quarter that the firm experienced a decrease in workforce. The firm’s total employee count was 240,234 by the end of 2023.

In November last year, reports said that Wipro might not give salary hikes to “top performers with higher compensation”. In an email to the employees, the Managing Partner and President of the ‘Enterprise Futuring’ business line, Nagendra Bandaru, said they are doing a “selective MSI (merit salary increases) rollout based on our business affordability”.

He also mentioned that the company will prioritise employees with lower compensation among those eligible for a salary hike.

RBI has stopped the Paytm Payments Bank from offering some services to customers.

New Delhi:

The Reserve Bank of India has taken action against Paytm Payments Bank after it directed the bank to not onboard new customers over supervisory concerns. In 2022, the RBI directed the bank to appoint an Income Tax audit firm to conduct a comprehensive System Audit of its IT system over non-compliance concerns.

The latest move by the RBI comes after the Comprehensive System Audit report and subsequent compliance validation report of the external auditors revealed persistent non-compliance and warranted further action.

The RBI has exercised its powers under the Banking Regulation Act and has stopped the Paytm Payments Bank from offering some services to customers.

  1. No further deposits, credit transactions or top-ups will be allowed in any customer accounts, prepaid instruments, wallets, FASTags, or National Common Mobility Cards after February 29.
  2. Customers can utilise the money in their account for withdrawal, but no further deposits are allowed. The customers can utilise the existing amount in their FASTags, wallets, savings accounts, current accounts, etc.
  3. The bank cannot provide services like fund transfers, irrespective of the nature of the service, which will not be allowed after February 29. The customers will still be allowed to use the UPI facility.
  4. The nodal accounts of One97 Communications Ltd, the parent company of Paytm, and the Paytm Payments Bank have been terminated by the RBI.
  5. For transactions initiated on or before February 29, all settlements have to be concluded by March 15, and no further transactions are permitted.

Iran, Saudi Arabia agree to resume Umrah Hajj flights

“We had an agreement with the Saudi Foreign Minister regarding the cooperation agreement between the Iranian and Saudi civil aviation organizations given the fact that the 7-8 years that Umrah Hajj had been suspended,” Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said while speaking to reporters after attending a cabinet meeting.

“There were technical discussions about the restoration of flights based on the new agreement, which was the most important technical issue between us,” he added.

The minister further noted that “Over the past days, a delegation from the Saudi Arabian Aviation Organization came to our country and completed their technical discussions according to the routine procedure.”

“Today I am going to have a phone conversation with my Saudi counterpart and we will review the latest situation together,”

“The Saudi authorities transparently told us that they have given the necessary instructions to resolve this technical problem and that the work is on the right track,” he also said.

Regarding the deepening of relations with Pakistan, Amir-Abdollahian emphasized, “In Pakistan, we held very good talks with high-ranking officials of the country. In the next few days, elections will be held in our neighboring country, Pakistan. For us, the issues of economic and commercial cooperation, development of markets and border areas are very important. Our basic approach is to convert the border, where terrorists have been hidden for years, into a border of trade, peace and friendship.”

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy handed over appointment letters to newly recruited Staff Nurses in a function held at L B Stadium on Wednesday. A total of 6956 posts of Staff Nurse have been filled across multiple health care departments by the Telangana Medical and Health Services Recruitment Board (MHSRB).

Congratulating the candidates who have been selected for the Staff Nurse posts, Chief Minister said that in the coming one year, the State government will go all out to fill nearly 2 lakh posts through Telangana State Public Services Commission (TSPSC) and Telangana State Level Police Recruitment Board.

The TSMHSRB has completed the recruitment process of the 6956 staff nurse posts in a record time of 13-months. The entire process of recruiting nurses at government health care facilities in Telangana was started by the then BRS government in December, 2022.

Addressing the selected candidates, Chief Minister said “We will work hard to ensure unemployed youth of Telangana have enough job opportunities. In the next one-year, we will make sure to fill 2 lakh jobs across multiple departments in Telangana,” he reiterated.

Hindus Allowed To Worship In Sealed Basement Of Varanasi's Gyanvapi Mosque

Hindu petitioners can worship inside the previously sealed basement – the ‘Vyas ka tekhana‘ area – of the Gyanvapi mosque complex in Varanasi, a city court ruled Wednesday. The judge also said arrangements, including removal of barricades, are to be completed in a week. The court further said prayers should be conducted by priests from the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

“Hindu side allowed to offer prayers… district administration will have to make arrangements in seven days. Everyone will have the right to pray there,” Vishnu Shankar Jain, the lawyer for the four Hindu women petitioners in this case, said.

The mosque committee is expected to challenge this order in a higher court.

The mosque has four ‘tekhana‘, or cellar, in the basement. One is still in the possession of a family of priests that used to live there. The family had argued that, as hereditary priests, they be allowed to enter the structure and perform pujas.

According to the petition, the priest, Somnath Vyas, used to perform prayers till 1993 when the cellar was closed.

It had earlier been claimed debris from statues of Hindu gods was found during a survey of the area. It had also been claimed parts of a pre-existing structure – ruled as a temple by the ASI report – including pillars, were used in building the mosque.

Today’s order comes a day after the four Hindu women approached the Supreme Court asking for excavation and scientific survey of a ‘shivling‘ reportedly found inside the sealed ‘wazukhana‘ area of the mosque complex.

This area had been sealed in 2022 following a Supreme Court order, but the Hindu side has now asked the court for the ASI, or Archaeological Survey of India, to carry out another survey of the ‘wazukhana‘ area without harming the ‘shivling‘.

Last month, in a crucial judgement, the Allahabad High Court had rejected all petitions by the mosque committee that had challenged civil suits seeking restoration of the temple at the site.

The overall case relates to the Gyanvapi mosque, located adjacent to the iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

The High Court had heard, and rejected petitions, including two from the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board, challenging the maintainability of a 1991 case before a Varanasi court.

The 1991 suit – filed on behalf of the Adi Vishveswar Virajman deity – sought control of the disputed premises. Challenging this, the Anjuman Intezamia Masajid Committee and the Waqf board argued the suit was not maintainable under a law that restricts alteration of the character of a religious places as it existed on Independence Day, i.e., August 15, 1947.

The petitioners argued that because the dispute is pre-Independence it would not be affected.
