Myanmar Extends State Of Emergency By 6 Months, Elections Delayed Again

Over 4,400 people have been killed in the military’s crackdown on dissent: Report (File)

Yangon, Myanmar:

Myanmar’s National Defence and Security Council agreed on Wednesday to extend a state of emergency by six months, the junta said, again delaying elections the military has promised to hold.

“U Myint Swe, the acting president announced the extension of the state of emergency for another six months… as the situation is not normal and to be able to continue the process of combatting terrorists,” the junta said in a statement.

The military declared a state of emergency when it ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s government in February 2021, triggering mass protests and a crackdown on dissent.

It has extended the state of emergency multiple times since, as it battles armed opposition to its coup across swathes of the country, delaying fresh elections it has promised to hold.

Myanmar’s military-drafted 2008 constitution, which the junta has said is still in force, requires authorities to hold fresh elections within six months of a state of emergency being lifted.

More than 4,400 people have been killed in the military’s crackdown on dissent, according to a local monitoring group.

A day after the high drama witnessed in the Chandigarh Mayoral poll results, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress will move to the Supreme Court.

He also called the Chandigarh Mayoral poll “an example of murder of democracy.”

“Whatever happened yesterday is an example of the murder of democracy. The budget is coming tomorrow, let’s see what Punjab gets. Aam Aadmi Party Punjab and Congress will move to the Supreme Court against the mayoral election”, CM Mann said.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the interim Union Budget on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the members of the Youth Congress staged a protest outside the Mayor’s office in Chandigarh on Wednesday.

There was a rift between the protestors and police at the spot.

Youth Congress workers were heard chanting the slogan ‘Bhrastachar band karo’ (Stop the corruption).

However, the police detained the protestors after a while.

A hearing was also held today in the Punjab Haryana High Court regarding tampering with the results of the Chandigarh Mayor election. In the Punjab Haryana High Court, Kuldeep Kumar, who was the mayoral candidate from the AAP and Congress, was being represented by Advocate General of Punjab Gurminder Gary. Advocate Anil Mehta was representing Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

After hearing this entire matter, Punjab Haryana High Court gave three weeks’ time to Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and Chandigarh Administration to file their reply in this matter. Now the next hearing of this matter will be on February 26.

The BJP’s Manoj Sonkar was declared the Mayor of Chandigarh on Tuesday after he won the mayoral polls with 16 votes against the 12 votes bagged by Congress-AAP candidate Kuldeep Tita. Eight votes were declared invalid.

Eight votes, which were declared invalid in the Chandigarh Mayoral polls, have led opposition leaders to raise allegations of rigging with Congress and AAP, attacking the BJP-led central government over the issue.

UAE sends first ambassador to Syria in 13 years

The incoming Emirati envoy officially presented his credentials to Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mikdad at the Arab country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in the capital Damascus on Tuesday.

According to Syria’s official SANA news agency, Hassan al-Shehi conveyed to the Syrian side his commitment to enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries during his meeting with Mikdad.

He also pledged to work to strengthen cooperation and achieve mutual progress between the two Arab countries.

For his part, Mekdad expressed Syria’s deep appreciation for the UAE’s solidarity with and support for Syria during challenging times.

Shehi arrived in Syria on Monday to become the first envoy of his country to Syria since 2011. He had served as the ambassador of the United Arab Emirates in Iraq since 2015, and before that, had been the ambassador to Sudan.

The UAE cut its relations with Syria in 2012, a year after Damascus found itself in the grips of foreign-backed terrorism and violence, but it reopened its embassy in Damascus in December 2018 amid Syria’s increasing success in recapturing vast swathes of its territory and turning the tide against the foreign-sponsored terrorists.

Before Shehi arrived in Syria a charge d’affaires had been in charge of the diplomatic mission.

In March 2022, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad traveled to the UAE, meeting with Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Assad’s visit to the UAE took place only months after the Emirates’ Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan traveled to the Syrian capital Damascus.

In May 2022, the 22-member Arab League agreed to reinstate Syria, ending a 12-year suspension and taking another step toward bringing Assad, back into the fold.

Saudi Arabia, which last year reached an agreement with Iran to restore bilateral ties, has opened the door for possible dialogue with Damascus in another signal of Syria’s warming ties with the Arab world.

Syrian daily Al-Watan has reported that Riyadh would be sending an ambassador to Damascus soon.

Mahalakshmi scheme impacts Hyderabad Metro ridership

This drop was attributed to the extended holidays and vacations in the third quarter, coupled with the initiation of the Mahalakshmi scheme offering free bus rides to women from December onwards

Mahalakshmi scheme impacts Hyderabad Metro ridership

Hyderabad: The Mahalakshmi scheme introduced by the State government has had a discernible impact on the ridership of the Hyderabad Metro, according to P. Ramakrishnan, Head Investor Relations at Larsen & Toubro Limited, during the financial results for the quarter and nine months ended December 31, 2023.

Despite an overall improvement in average metro ridership from 3.94 lakh passengers a day in the third quarter of the previous year to 4.44 lakh passengers per day in the third quarter of FY24, Ramakrishnan revealed that the average ridership in the current year’s previous quarter was 4.62 lakh passengers per day.

This drop was attributed to the extended holidays and vacations in the third quarter, coupled with the initiation of the Mahalakshmi scheme offering free bus rides to women from December onwards.

Ramakrishnan further disclosed, “Hyderabad Metro received financial support of Rs 150 crore from the State government during the third quarter. The cumulative amount received under this facility until December 2023 stands at Rs 900 crore.”

In an effort to address financial challenges, L&T plans to make a proposed investment of up to Rs 2,774 crore by subscribing to equity shares offered under a rights issue by L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad.

According to the financial report, this investment will be made at face value, and since the offer is extended to all shareholders at the same terms, the transaction is considered to be at “arm’s length.”

The financial report indicated that L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad, incorporated on August 24, 2010, for the development of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project, received a total income of Rs 703.20 crore for the fiscal year 2022-23, Rs 475.37 crore for 2021-22, and Rs 386.02 crore for 2020-21.

The proposed equity infusion of Rs 2,774 crore aims to reduce the debt and interest burden of L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad, providing financial relief to the subsidiary.
