David Warner Likely To Miss Australia's White-Ball Series vs West Indies

Veteran opening batter David Warner will likely miss Australia’s upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies to increase his availability for T20I League cricket, according to ESPNcricinfo. Warner, 37, will call an end to his Test career next week following the conclusion of the three-match series against Pakistan. Warner has a deal with the ILT20 franchise Dubai Capitals and the tournament will be played from January 20 to February 18.

Australia will host the West Indies between February 2 and 13 for three ODIs and three T20Is. Warner is also likely to feature in the Big Bash League for Sydney Thunder after playing his final Test.

The chief executive of the Australian Cricketers’ Association, Todd Greenberg, indicated on Thursday that he expected Warner to apply for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to play in the ILT20.

“I think the short answer to that is probably yes,” Greenberg told SEN as quoted from ESPNcricifo

“I know he’s pretty committed to the BBL. There’s no doubt that in the next phase of Dave’s life, he’s going to be looking to ply his trade where he gets the best return on his investment. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that; in fact, I’m encouraging him to do that,” Greenberg said.

“There will be times where he’ll be looking to miss certain games and tours. That’s the sort of flexibility we’ve got to get our heads around. Some people won’t like that, but that’s the modern world in which we’re living, and we have to embrace it,” Greenberg added.

Warner had also indicated during the World Cup that he wouldn’t be taking a contract from Cricket Australia in order to give himself more freedom.

“I won’t be taking a contract, definitely not. How the system works in Australia is that if you play five [T20] games, or ODIs, or three Tests, you get upgraded and then you’re legally bound by the contracting system with sponsors and stuff,” Warner said.

“That’s something that becomes a bit of a pain in the backside, especially at this stage of my career. So I don’t want to be signed to that agreement and that’s something I have to think about moving forward, because if you’re going to get a low contract, it’s going to cost you a lot in the long run with sponsorships,” Warner added.

Michelin Star Chef Quits Job Over Video Of Naked Staffer Tied To Chair

Michelin Star Chef Quits Job Over Video Of Naked Staffer Tied To Chair

Aurelien Largeau ran the restaurant of the prestigious Hotel du Palais in Biarritz

Biarritz, France:

A French star chef has abruptly quit his luxury hotel job after a kitchen hand was reportedly tied up naked and humiliated, the hotel chain said Thursday.

The Bayonne public prosecutor’s office has opened a preliminary investigation into charges of sexual assault and violence, prosecutor Jerome Bourrier told AFP.

Aurelien Largeau, 31, who has a coveted Michelin star to his name, ran the restaurant of the prestigious Hotel du Palais in Biarritz, southwestern France until his sudden departure last week.

A spokesperson for hotel owners Hyatt told AFP that the management had been informed of a “troubling incident”, footage of which had been shared online.

She gave no details of what was on the images but regional daily Sud Ouest reported that they showed an initiation ritual in the hotel kitchen.

A kitchen hand was tied to a chair naked for hours with an apple in his mouth and a carrot in his anus with all the chefs — known as the kitchen brigade — looking on, including Largeau.

The footage has since been removed from the internet.

The “humiliating” incident took place “under the authority, and in the presence, of chef Aurelien Largeau”, Sud Ouest said.

‘Safety a priority’

“This incident does not reflect the values that we defend,” the Hyatt spokesperson said. “We have undertaken an investigation and taken the appropriate decisions,” she said.

“The safety, health and well-being of our colleagues, clients and partners are absolute priorities for us.”

The Hotel du Palais is a five-star hotel on the seafront in Biarritz, with an average price per night of over 400 euros ($445).

Officials at Biarritz city hall, a principal shareholder in the Socomix company which owns the hotel building, were unavailable for comment.

“We found out about it from the press,” said Patrick Destizon, an opposition town councillor and one of Socomix’s directors.

He said the hotel’s management did not mention “this episode” at a board meeting last week.

Hazing is banned under French law, but reports say the practice still occurs in French restaurants. It is sometimes defended as a test of whether junior staff can handle the pressures of the job.

A number of cooking professionals have started campaigns against violence in kitchens in recent years, including one called “Hands off my Kitchen Hand” and another “Respect your Kitchen”.

Israeli Embassy Pulls Video Imagining Hamas Attack In Seoul

Israeli Embassy Pulls Video Imagining Hamas Attack In Seoul

Hamas operatives took around 250 hostages during October 7 attack, Israel says. (File)

The Israeli embassy in South Korea has removed a video showing an imaginary scenario in which Koreans are attacked by masked assailants in Seoul, a reference to Hamas, Seoul’s foreign ministry said Thursday.

The ministry said in a statement sent to AFP that the video was deemed “inappropriate” and that it had asked the Israeli embassy to take it down.

The video, which is no longer available on the embassy’s social media, depicted a distressing scenario in which a South Korean woman in the capital is abducted by an armed assailant on Christmas Day, and forcibly separated from her young daughter, a clip published by South Korean broadcaster YTN showed.

The Israeli embassy wrote, alongside the now-removed video posted on its Facebook account on Tuesday: “On October 7th, Israel was attacked by Hamas terrorists. 1,200 men, women and children were killed, and over 240 people were taken hostage in Gaza.”

“Imagine if it happened to you. What would you do?” it added.

South Korea remains technically at war with nuclear-armed North Korea, as their 1950-53 military conflict ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty.

YTN reported that Israel’s ambassador in Seoul Akiva Tor said in a social media post that has since been deleted: “We have reconstructed the horrifying terrorist incident that took place on October 7th to help South Koreans in East Asia, far away from Israel, understand the current war situation.”

Israel has repeatedly vowed to keep up its campaign to destroy Palestinian group Hamas in retaliation for its bloody October 7 attack, which left about 1,140 people dead, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures.

Hamas Operatives also took around 250 hostages, 129 of whom remain in captivity, Israel says.

Israel’s relentless bombardment and ground invasion of the Gaza Strip have killed at least 21,110 people, mostly women and children, according to the latest toll from Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.

“The killing and kidnapping of Israeli civilians by Hamas cannot be justified, but the Israeli Embassy’s production and distribution of a video drawing parallels to the security situation in another country was deemed inappropriate,” South Korea’s foreign ministry said in the statement.

“We have conveyed our position to the Israeli Embassy in South Korea, and the Israeli side has taken measures to delete the video in question.”

"Operating Illegally": Centre Issues Notices To 9 Offshore Crypto Platforms

'Operating Illegally': Centre Issues Notices To 9 Offshore Crypto Platforms

Notices were sent under Section 13 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (Representational Image)

New Delhi:

As part of compliance action against the offshore entities, Financial Intelligence Unit India (FIU IND) has issued show cause notices to nine offshore Virtual Digital Assets Service Providers (VDA SPs) under Section 13 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

According to an official release from the Ministry of Finance, “Virtual Digital Assets Service Providers (VDA SPs) were brought into the ambit of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (AML-CFT) framework under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PML) Act in March 2023.”

“As part of compliance action against the offshore entities, Financial Intelligence Unit India (FIU IND) has issued compliance Show Cause Notices to the following nine offshore Virtual Digital Assets Service Providers (VDA SPs) under Section 13 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA),” it said.

As per the release, the nine offshore Virtual Digital Assets Service Providers are Binance, Kucoin, Huobi, Kraken, Gate.io, Bittrex, Bitstamp, MEXC Global and Bitfinex.

“Director FIU IND has written to the Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to block the URLs of said entities that are operating illegally without complying with the provisions of the PML Act in India,” said the release.

VDA SPs operating in India (both offshore and onshore) and engaged in activities like exchange between virtual digital assets and fiat currencies, transfer of virtual digital assets, safekeeping or administration of virtual digital assets or instruments enabling control over virtual digital assets, etc. are required to be registered with FIU IND as reporting entities and comply with the set of obligations as mandated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) 2002, it said.

The obligation is activity-based and is not contingent on physical presence in India.

“The regulation places reporting, record-keeping, and other obligations on the VDA SPs under the PML Act, which also includes registration with the FIU IND,” said the release.

To date, 31 VDA SPs have registered with FIU IND. However, several offshore entities, though catering to a substantial part of Indian users, were not getting registered and coming under the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (CFT) frameworks.

US Military's Secretive X-37B Spaceplane Ready For Launch To Higher Orbit

US Military's Secretive X-37B Spaceplane Ready For Launch To Higher Orbit

After weeks of false starts and delays, SpaceX teams prepared again on Thursday to launch the military’s secretive X-37B robot spaceplane on its seventh mission, the first atop a rocket capable of delivering it to a higher orbit than ever before.

The SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket is due for a nighttime blast-off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, on Florida’s Atlantic coast, during a 10-minute launch window starting at 8:07 p.m. EST (0107 GMT Friday).

A series of three launch countdowns were aborted earlier this month due to poor weather and unspecified technical issues, leading ground crews to roll the spacecraft back to its hangar before proceeding with the latest launch attempt.

It comes two weeks after China’s own reusable robot spaceplane, known as the Shenlong, or “Divine Dragon,” was launched on its third mission to orbit since 2020, adding a new twist to the growing US-Sino rivalry in space.

The latest weather forecast for Thursday’s flight called for an 80% chance of favorable launch conditions.

The Defense Department has disclosed few details about the X-37B mission, which is conducted by the US Space Force under the military’s National Security Space Launch program.

The Boeing-built vehicle, roughly the size of a small bus and resembling a miniature space shuttle, is intended to deploy various payloads and conduct technology experiments on long-duration orbital flights. At the end of its mission, the craft descends back through the atmosphere to land on a runway much like an airplane.

It has flown six previous missions since 2010, the first five of them carried to orbit by Atlas V rockets from United Launch Alliance, a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin, and most recently, in May 2020, atop a Falcon 9 booster furnished by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

The impending mission would mark the first launched aboard SpaceX’s more powerful Falcon Heavy rocket, capable of carrying payloads even heavier than the X-37B farther into space, possibly into geosynchronous orbit, more than 22,000 miles (35,000 km) above the Earth.

The X-37B, also called the Orbital Test Vehicle, has previously been confined to flights in low-Earth orbit, at altitudes below 1,200 miles (2,000 km).

‘New Orbital Regimes, And Seeds’

The Pentagon has not said how high the spaceplane would fly this time out. But in a statement last month, the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office said mission No. 7 would involve tests of “new orbital regimes, experimenting with future space domain awareness technologies.”

The X-37B also is carrying a NASA experiment to study how plant seeds are affected by prolonged exposure to the harsh environment of radiation in space. The ability to cultivate crops in space has major implications for keeping astronauts nourished during future long-term missions to the moon and Mars.

China’s equally secretive Shenlong was carried to space on Dec. 14 by a Long March 2F rocket, a launch system less powerful than SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy and limited to delivering payloads to low-Earth orbit.

Still, Space Force General B. Chance Saltzman told reporters at an industry conference earlier this month that he expected China to launch Shenlong around the same time as the forthcoming X-37B flight in what he suggested was a competitive move.

“The Chinese are extremely interested in our spaceplane. We’re extremely interested in theirs,” Saltzman said in remarks published by Air & Space Forces Magazine, a US aerospace journal.

“These are two of the most watched objects on orbit while they’re on orbit. It’s probably no coincidence that they’re trying to match us in timing and sequence of this,” he said.

The planned duration of the latest X-37B mission has not been made public but presumably will run until June 2026 or later, given the prevailing pattern of successively longer flights.

The last mission remained in orbit for well over two years before a return landing in November 2022.

"If We Have To Win Tests…": Rohit's Honest Admission After Loss To SA

India skipper Rohit Sharma had no qualms about admitting that his team was simply not good enough to challenge South Africa, putting the blame for the embarrassing innings and 32 run loss in the first Test on the lack of collective effort. India put up a shoddy show both with bat and ball as they were bundled out for 131 in 34.1 overs in their second innings after they allowed South Africa to score 408 in 108.4 overs in their first essay. The visitors had scored 245 in the first innings.

“We were not good enough to win. Having been put in to bat, KL (Rahul) batted well to get us that score but then we didn’t exploit the conditions with the ball and then again didn’t show up today with the bat,” said Rohit during the post-match presentation.

“If we have to win Test matches, we have to come together collectively and we didn’t do that. Guys have come here before, we know what to expect and everyone has their own plan.

“Our batters were challenged and we didn’t adapt well. This is a boundary-scoring ground, we saw them score many but we need to understand the opposition and their strengths as well. We didn’t bat well in both innnings, that’s why we stand here.”

The India skipper struggled to find much positives with the match ending inside three days.

“Not too many positives to finish the game within three days, but KL showed what we need to do on this sort of pitch,” he said.

KL Rahul had scored a century in the first innings.

“Our bowlers, a lot of these guys haven’t been here before so I don’t want to be too critical.

“Important for us to regroup, we go through these times as sportsmen and we need to be ready for the next Test now.”

Playing his last international series, Dean Elgar slammed a magnificent 185 and the opener termed it a “special” knock and highlighted his partnerships with Tony de Zorzi (28) and Marco Jansen (84).

“Pretty special knock. Sometimes what we want to do hasn’t worked out as plans, but happy that it worked today. I think you need to keep things nice and simple, the game is already pretty complex,” said the 36-year-old, who was adjudged the Player of the Match.

“Focus on the ball, play nice and straight. Play late and be great. You got to ride the roller when it is in your favour.

“Good partnerships with Tony, and then Jansen showed his talent as well. You need fast bowlers and a spinner potentially to take 20 wickets, that’s how we win Test matches.”

Proteas pace trio of Nandre Burger (4/33), Kagiso Rabada (2/32) and Marco Jansen (3/36) smothered the visitors with a disciplined attack as India folded for 131 in 34.1 overs.

“(Rabada) KG was brilliant, but then Nandre showed why he has been such a shining light for South African cricket,” Elgar said.

“You can’t win a two-Test series if you don’t win the first one, the Indians are difficult to beat.

“We’ll have a few days out to relax and enjoy this. We were pretty clinical, our fielding wasn’t the best and we didn’t make it too easy for ourselves at times.”

India Coach Shuts Rohit's Critics With "Best Puller In The World" Remark

India captain Rohit Sharma didn’t mark the most pleasant of returns to the cricket field, departing for a single-digit score on Day 1 of the first Test against South Africa. Rohit attempted a pull shot, arguably his most decorated stroke, against Kagiso Rabada but found a fielder instead of clearing the ropes. When India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour was asked about Rohit’s dismissal in the press conference after the end of play on the first day, he gave a passionate defence of the skipper.

“Rohit, I mean, I have spoken about it earlier as well. This is the shot he believes in, this is the shot he scores a lot of runs with. This is his shot. So, he is going to play this shot,” Rathour told the press in Centurion after the frist day’s play.

“Some days, it will come off. Some days, it won’t. So today, it didn’t. We can talk about it. On another day, he will hit for a six and everybody will say this is the shot he plays really well. We have heard people say he is the best puller in the world. He believes in it. We are okay, as a team management we are backing it,” he added.

Rathour showered praise on middle-order batter KL Rahul and said that he is a man of crisis. Speaking at the post-day press conference, Rathour said that every time India suffered Rahul prevailed to take India in a better place. He added that Rahul was very clear with his plans against South Africa and did what he wanted to do.

“He is a man of crisis. Every time there is a tough situation most of the times he is there. He is very clear with his game plans what he wanted to do,” Rathour said.

Talking about the conditions in Centurion, he further added that it was a “challenging surface to bat” especially due to the rainy weather.

The batting coach added that they would love to have more runs on the scoreboard after the end of the first day. However, he added that the visitors did “reasonably well” against the Proteas on day one.

“It was always going to be a challenging surface to bat on because the weather was there, the wicket was undercover for a day or more than that. We would love to have a couple of more wickets on our hands at the end of the day but we did reasonably well, we have runs on board,” he added.

Talking about Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, he praised the two batters and said that they played a crucial recovery partnership after India lost three wickets.

“The condition was tough. After losing three wickets, it was a good recovery partnership from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, they both have played well,” he added.

Ansrullah: Intl. waterways secure except for ships bound for occupied territories

Yemen’s Ansarullah popular resistance movement insists that the international waterways are secure for all passing vessels, except for Israeli ones or those heading towards the occupied territories.

Mohammed Abdul-Salam, Ansarullah’s spokesman, made the remarks to Euronews on Thursday.

“Sana’a explicitly stated that only Israeli ships, those heading to Israel, or affiliated vessels are targeted, while all other ships worldwide are not targeted,” he noted.

The movement and Yemen’s Armed Forces have been staging missile and drone attacks against vessels heading towards Israeli ports in support of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which has come under an unrelenting genocidal Israeli war.

At least 21,110 people, mostly women and children, have been killed during the war, which the Israeli regime launched on October 7 following an operation staged by Gaza’s resistance groups.

The Yemeni forces have vowed to keep up their strikes until the regime stops the war and lifts a concomitant siege that it has been enforcing on Gaza.

Abdul-Salam, meanwhile, commented on a naval coalition, which the United States recently announced forming with the aim of heading off the Yemeni attacks.

“The American coalition in the Red Sea is solely aimed at protecting Israel, failing to persuade the world of any risks in the Red Sea or the Arabian Sea,” he said.

Washington, he added, had started exerting pressure on some shipping companies to stop transiting their vessels through the Red Sea as means of coercing some nations into joining the coalition.

“Yemen’s blockade against the Zionist enemy is founded on religious, ethical, humanitarian, national, and patriotic principles,” Abdul-Salam, meanwhile, remarked.

He said Sana’a “understands the consequences of this decision,” adding, “Yet the gravest repercussions would result from abandoning the Palestinian cause” of liberation from Israeli occupation and aggression.

A 12-foot alligator weighing 597 kilograms was recently found strolling at a mall in Florida, US. Taking to Facebook, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office shared a video of the alligator being rescued from the Coconut Point Mall in Estero. In the caption, the department informed that the gator was spotted strolling behind the Five Below Store, following which MyFWC Florida Fish and Wildlife responded to the scene and rescued the massive reptile.

“Just moments ago, Sergeant Toslluku, Deputy Cevertus, and Deputy Roedding were called to a 12 foot, 600 pound gator at Coconut Point Mall! Our friends with MyFWC Florida Fish and Wildlife responded to the scene, and in a joint effort, we got this massive guy to safety!” the caption of the post read.

“There truly is never a dull moment while on patrol here in Lee County, eh? If you’re chompin’ at the bit to get into law enforcement, we promise excitement and a great workout here at #TeamLCSO,” it added.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, another video of an alligator had gone viral online. The footage showed a Florida man attempting to trap an alligator in a garbage bin that had ventured into a residential area. The man seen in the video was seen approaching an alligator with an open trash container. As he made his approach, the alligator gradually retreated, and in the audio, he was heard saying, “Let me know when the head goes inside”.

The man successfully managed to trap the reptile inside the container by lifting it and closing the lid, eliciting cheers from nearby onlookers who were witnessing the action.

In the end, the man wheeled the bin down to a nearby lake and released the alligator into the water. The gator moved fast to get away.
