Ukrainian Strike In Belgorod Killed At Least 14, Injured 108, Says Russia

Ukrainian Strike In Belgorod Killed At Least 14, Injured 108, Says Russia

Moscow:

Russia said Saturday that a Ukrainian strike killed at least 14 people and injured 108 in the city of Belgorod, a day after Russian strikes killed dozens in Ukraine.

Belgorod lies about 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the border with Ukraine and has been repeatedly targeted by what Russia says is indiscriminate shelling by Kyiv’s forces.

Unverified footage showed debris strewn across the street and smoke billowing from burnt-out cars in the city’s centre, while a large blast can be heard in dashcam footage posted on social media.

AFP was not able to immediately verify the circumstances of the blast.

“According to updated information, 12 adults and two children were killed in Belgorod. Another 108 people, including 15 children, were injured,” Russia’s emergencies ministry said.

President Vladimir Putin has been briefed on the incident, the Kremlin said, while the Russian defence ministry warned the attack would “not go unpunished”.

The attack came as rescuers in Ukraine continued to search through rubble Saturday after Russian strikes killed at least 39 people the day before, in one of the fiercest attacks since the early days of the conflict.

Schools, a maternity hospital, shopping arcades and blocks of flats were all among the buildings hit in Friday’s barrage, which triggered international condemnation.

Ukraine’s military estimated Russia had launched 158 missiles and drones on Ukraine and 114 of them had been destroyed.

Air force spokesman Yuriy Ignat told AFP that this was a “record number” of missiles and “the most massive missile attack” of the conflict, excluding the early days of constant bombardment.

“Work is still underway to eliminate the consequences of yesterday’s Russian attack,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

January 1 will be declared a day of mourning in the capital Kyiv, where at least 16 people were killed, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

‘Stop this terror’

Russia’s army said it had “carried out 50 group strikes and one massive strike” on military facilities in Ukraine over the past week, adding that “all targets were hit”.

The United Nations condemned the attacks and said they must stop “immediately”.

Poland reported that a Russian missile briefly passed through its airspace.

“Everything indicates that a Russian missile entered Polish airspace… It also left,” said General Wieslaw Kukula, chief of the general staff of the Polish armed forces.

After speaking to Polish President Andrzej Duda, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance “stands in solidarity” with Poland, adding: “NATO remains vigilant.”

In the face of sustained Russian assaults, Ukraine is urging Western allies to maintain military support.

Ukraine presidential aide Andriy Yermak said Kyiv needed “more support and strength to stop this terror”.

US President Joe Biden called on Congress to overcome its division to approve new aid for Ukraine, after Washington released its final package of weaponry under existing agreements still to be renewed.

“Unless Congress takes urgent action in the new year, we will not be able to continue sending the weapons and vital air defence systems Ukraine needs to protect its people,” Biden said.

“Congress must step up and act without any further delay.”

Britain announced it would send hundreds more air defence missiles to Kyiv, after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declared that “We must continue to stand with Ukraine — for as long as it takes.”

Estranged couple reunites after counselling at Lok Adalat in Warangal

Warangal: Due to the efforts of judges at the Lok Adalat, a couple seeking separation reunited here on Saturday.

Kongara Ekambram, hailing from Konduru village in the Rayaparthi mandal, and Kongara Rajitha, a resident of Dammannapet village in Wardhannapet Mandal, tied the knot in 2019 and were blessed with a daughter. However, they developed disputes when they relocated to Bhodan in Nizamabad for work. Following this, Rajitha sought refuge at her mother’s residence in Dammannapet, citing Ekambram’s alleged mistreatment.

Efforts by village elders and community leaders to mediate proved futile, prompting Rajitha to resort to legal action by filing a complaint with the police. At the same time, Ekambram approached the Warangal sub-court in response to Rajitha’s actions.

Judges Koka Radha Devi and Sai Kumar reviewed the details of the case and intervened by counselling the estranged couple. Emphasizing the importance of their daughter’s future and the benefits of a unified family, the judges urged Ekambram and Rajitha to reconsider their decision to separate. Influenced by the judges’ counsel, the couple had a change of heart and agreed to reconcile.

The incident took place at London Gatwick Airport. (Representative pic)

London Gatwick Airport recently witnessed an extraordinary scene when an impatient traveller had an epic meltdown while waiting for his luggage. According to the New York Post, the passenger, who unleashed a verbal tirade on the baggage carousel, threatened to defecate on the conveyor belt if his baggage didn’t arrive promptly. “We are waiting! If you don’t hurry up I will go poo on the f***ing trail!” the impatient man angrily vowed at the airport.

This recent incident has set a new benchmark for baggage carousel drama. The British traveller, whose name remains unknown, unleashed an epic meltdown after his luggage took a few extra minutes to arrive on a conveyor belt. As per the Post, the man screamed into the carousel in an attempt to talk to baggage handlers behind the scenes. He then threatened to defecate on the belt if his luggage didn’t arrive promptly.

The fed-up flier waited for around 15-20 minutes for his baggage before climbing onto the conveyor belt and threatening to poop again in public, the outlet reported. “”Helloooo? Hellloooo?” the passenger shouted in the abyss. “I’ll tell you what, if you don’t hurry up I’m going to lay a Richard [defecate] right in front of it [the baggage carousel],” he said.

The man’s luggage emerged on the conveyor belt after an exorbitantly long wait time. His baggage was the first to make its grand entrance. “It’s number one!” he excitedly shouted with triumphant joy, as per people who witnessed the absurd incident. It is not known when the incident took place.

Meanwhile, in a similar incident earlier this year, a passenger onboard an American Airlines flight was kicked out of the plane after a heated argument with a member of the cabin crew over the number of bags kept in the overhead storage bins. A video of the same was shared on Reddit.

In the clip, the man, who had his hair in a top knot and was wearing a yellow t-shirt, was captured on camera yelling “there’s no space” repeatedly after another passenger allegedly kept their luggage above him and then took their seat. The passenger said in the video, “This guy put his luggage up here, now we don’t have any space. He’s got no space.” He continued repeating the same phrase as other passengers boarded the plane.

The Reddit user who posted the video claimed the man had utilised four of the overhead bins to store his luggage and that he could be seen removing numerous bags as he was being removed. “Ironically, he had like 4 big bags on the overhead bins. I left out the horrendous racist comments he made to the gentleman who put his luggage in the overhead bin,” reads the description of the video.

Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has accused the previous BRS government of pushing the State’s power sector into a deep financial crisis.

The Energy Minister, who visited Bhadradri Thermal Power Station (BTPS) in Khammam district on Saturday, said during the time of bifurcation of the State, the power due was only Rs.7,259 crore, which in the next nine-and-a-half years touched Rs.81,516 crore. “It will be a herculean task for the present government to overcome the debts and put the power sector back on track,”he said.

Giving details of the power debts, he said the total debts of the power sector stood at Rs. 1,10,358 crore, out of which Rs. 28,842 crore had to be paid to the distribution companies. The previous government had spent Rs. 30,406 crore on power purchase, and power arrears to Singareni stood at Rs. 19,431 crore, whereas Genco dues stood at Rs 9,743 crore. Stating that due to the wrong policies of the previous government the State was pushed into debts, Bhatti said the financial health of the State was worrying.

Commenting on the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant and Bhadradri power plant construction costs, the Minister said both the plants were constructed by taking huge loans and that the cost of the plants escalated several times.

New Delhi: The AAP National General Secretary Organisation and Rajya Sabha MP, Sandeep Pathak, convened a meeting at the party headquarters regarding the success of the door-to-door campaign and the training for the upcoming ‘Mai Bhi Kejriwal’ public dialogue campaign starting from January 4.

The ‘Mai Bhi Kejriwal’ signature campaign of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) concluded on Saturday. This campaign ran from December 1 to December 30, 2023.

Addressing the meeting, AAP’s National General Secretary Organisation Sandeep Pathak, congratulated everyone for making the ‘Mai Bhi Kejriwal’ signature campaign a success without leaving any stone unturned.

Sandeep Pathak acknowledged the success of the party’s door-to-door campaign, reaching every household in Delhi.

“The campaign achieved far more success than anticipated. To further build on this success, the party is now launching the ‘Mai Bhi Kejriwal Jan Samvad’ campaign in Delhi, commencing on January 4th, 2024, with the participation of all AAP ministers, MLAs, and councillors. Just like the ‘Mai Kejriwal’ signature campaign, we have to make ‘Mai Bhi Kejriwal Jan Samvad’ a huge success. We have to ensure the participation of as many people as possible from across Delhi during the public dialogue campaign,” he said.

Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak mentioned that the ‘Mai Bhi Kejriwal’ signature campaign received abundant love and support from the people of Delhi. Delhiites unanimously believe that the Modi government is plotting various conspiracies to imprison their Chief Minister.

They opined that they wouldn’t allow their Chief Minister to be arrested under any circumstances. The good work done by CM Arvind Kejriwal for them has not been done by any other Chief Minister.

Delhiites expressed, “We deeply love our Chief Minister; we elected him as the Chief Minister of Delhi. If the Modi government arrests our Chief Minister through conspiracy, CM Arvind Kejriwal should not resign under any circumstance. He should run the government even from jail. If the Modi government arrests our Chief Minister, we will also go to jail with him.” “Our leaders informed the people of Delhi about the autocracy of the Modi government by going door-to-door. We informed Delhiites about how the Modi government is conspiring to eliminate the AAP and Delhi’s CM, Arvind Kejriwal. We told people that anyone who questions the Modi government is either suspended or put behind bars. If Modi Ji fears anyone, it’s Arvind Kejriwal,” he said.

“Due to this fear, Modi has conspired to arrest CM Arvind Kejriwal. The BJP aims to disintegrate the AAP after putting Arvind Kejriwal in confinement. I want to tell the BJP that we have never bowed before and will never bow ahead. Even if all our leaders are jailed, we will continue fighting for honesty and truth. Discussions about the ‘Mai Bhi Kejriwal’ signature campaign are happening across Delhi today,” he added.

Ukrainian attack on Russian city leaves at least 14 dead

Ukrainian forces shelled the city of Belgorod on Saturday, killing over a dozen civilians and injuring over a hundred others. The settlement of Urazovo was also targeted.

The latest figures put the number of killed at 14 and the injured at 108.

At least 10 people including one child were killed and 45 others wounded in a massive shelling of the Russian city of Belgorod by Ukraine, the Russian Emergency Ministry stated, according to Sputnik.

At around 3 pm local time, explosions were heard in Belgorod, after which black smoke was visible over the city. A few minutes later, the siren began to sound. Security services blocked the intersection of Bogdan Khmelnytsky Street and Slavy Avenue. Motorists and pedestrians were advised to avoid the area.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that on Friday night, Russian air defense systems destroyed 13 rockets over the Belgorod region. The region’s governor said that as a result of a direct hit by a shell on a private house during the massive shelling of Belgorod, one person was killed and four were wounded.

Numerous videos have appeared on social media showing the consequences of a Saturday strike by Kiev’s forces on the Russian city of Belgorod, located some 40 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, local Russian media reported.

The Russian Emergencies Ministry said on Telegram that the attack claimed the lives of nine adults and a child. Some 45 people were injured, including four children, Russia Today reported.

One of the clips, published by the Shot Telegram channel, shows civilians lying on the ground trying to protect themselves from incoming projectiles, with loud sounds of explosions heard in the background. People were seen lying among the debris and pieces of broken glass. Cries and screams can also be heard on the video as people desperately call for help and children search for their parents.

The very moment of one shell impact was also caught on a video published by Shot. Footage taken from a moving vehicle shows a major blast hitting the road in front of it, raising plumes of grey smoke into the air.

Images published by RIA Novosti showed the immediate aftermath of the Ukrainian strike, which hit a busy city street. The video shows a road filled with damaged cars, with at least three of the vehicles still burning.

US military may get into direct conflict with Russia: Biden

US President Joe Biden has issued a warning, saying American military forces may enter into a direct conflict with Russia if Ukraine loses the war.

In a statement released on Friday, Biden claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin “seeks to obliterate Ukraine and subjugate its people. He must be stopped.”

Biden’s warning came after Russia launched fresh airstrikes against Ukraine, targeting the Ukrainian military facilities in the south, west, and east of the country, with heavy damage reported at multiple sites.

The heavy overnight strike by Russia took place as the US Congress remains deadlocked over whether to provide further military support to Kiev in the US-led Western countries’ proxy war against Russian troops in Donbas which will enter its third year in late February 2024.

Biden said Russia’s latest airstrikes on Ukraine showed Russian leadership maintained unwavering resolve to achieve its set objective in Ukraine.

“It is a stark reminder to the world that, after nearly two years of this devastating war, Putin’s objective remains unchanged.”

The president said the Russians had used drones and missiles, including those with hypersonic capability, for the latest strike.

He called on Congress to provide additional military aid for Ukraine, noting Kiev used air defense systems from the Americans and their allies to try to defend itself against the heavy Russian airstrikes.

“Unless Congress takes urgent action in the new year, we will not be able to continue sending the weapons and vital air defense systems Ukraine needs to protect its people. Congress must step up and act without any further delay,” Biden insisted.

The US has already delivered multiple huge shipments of weapons and munitions to Kiev to fight the war against Russia. But, it has been to no avail.

Earlier this month, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Washington to ask Congress to approve the supply of more weapons and munitions for the Kiev forces.

On Thursday, Zelensky thanked Biden, Congress, and the American people for the latest $250mn military aid package for his country, which Washington announced a day earlier.

“Additional air defense missiles and components, anti-tank weapons, ammunition, mine clearing, and other equipment will cover Ukraine’s most pressing needs,” Zelenskyy said in a statement posted on X.

Zelensky said Washington had provided Kiev with 34 military aid packages worth over $24 billion in 2023.

He added that these packages include Patriot air defense systems, Abrams tanks, armored vehicles, ATACMS tactical missile systems, missiles, artillery rounds, as well as mine-clearing and other critical equipment.

The Ukrainian president also noted that a “historic decision” was made to provide Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets and that Ukraine will “always be grateful for all of this support.”

Since the start of the war, the US has led a Western coalition sending tens of billions of dollars in weaponry and munitions to Kiev.

Moscow has repeatedly warned Western leaders against the continued supply of weapons and munitions to Ukraine, pointing out that such measures will not stop Russian troops from defending its objectives and that arming Kiev would only prolong the war.
