Gonguluru women will soon be selling their products in Japan if they gets clearance from lab

Sangareddy: As a first step towards selling the products made by the Self Help Group (SHG) women of Gonguluru village in Pulkal Mandal, a five-member team of Suzuki Innovation Centre (SIC) of Japan had collected the products like handmade soaps and cold-pressed oils from Gongulur cottage industry.

These products have been sent for testing in a lab. Once they get it positive, the women of Gonguluru village would start exporting these products to Japan.

The SIC was set up by Japan government at the Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIT-H) as part of Japan India collaboration. The SIC would work for stronger relations between India and Japan. Since Sarvodaya Grama Seva Foundation (SGSF), which had supported the Gonguluru women setting up a cottage industry called Sarvodhaya Women Entrepreneurs a year ago, had also collaborated with IIT-H, the SIC came to know about the work of Gonguluru women.

They have contacted the women expressing their interest in making a direct visit to the industry. Following it, a team of five SIC members led by the Shunsuke Aoki had visited the Gonguluru unit on Saturday.

After hours of examination of the functioning, premises, raw materials, and interaction with the SHG women, the team had collected a few products and sent them for testing. The SHG had achieved a Rs 60 lakh turnover in the first year by selling its products which were sold under Manjeera brand name. Speaking to Telangana Today, the SGSF founder Dr Sudhakar Nayak said the SHG women will certainly get good profits if the SIC approved the products for export to Japan. (eom)

EOC activated following mass fish deaths in Australia

Sydney: An emergency operations centre has been activated in Menindee, a small town in the far west of Australia’s New South Wales (NSW), to facilitate multi-agency operations, after millions of native fish were found floating down the Darling river.

The NSW Police Force said on Sunday that the massive fish deaths are believed to be attributed to hypoxic blackwater, a naturally occurring phenomenon that causes extremely low dissolved oxygen levels, Xinhua news agency reported.

“The scale of this event has been exacerbated by recent hot weather and significantly increased number of fish in the system as floodwaters recede,” the police noted.

According to the police statement, authorities are continuing to release higher-quality water to boost dissolved oxygen levels in this area, while the emergency operations center (EOC) was established to ensure fresh and clean water supply as well as to coordinate the removal and disposal of fish.

NSW Police Force Assistant Commissioner Brett Greentree, who oversees the centre, pointed out that numerous agencies are already on the ground in the area with more on the way to conduct and support operational activities.

“Significant planning, including risk assessments, is already underway for clean-up efforts, which will include the removal of as many of the dead fish as possible, prioritising the immediate areas around Menindee, as well as other areas deemed high-risk in terms of water supply,” Greentree said.

“While this will require specialised skills and equipment, experts in the EOC have already identified suitable contractors, and it is expected work will commence this week,” he added.

On Friday, the NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) confirmed on social media that the agency is aware of a developing large-scale fish death event on the Lower Darling-Baaka below Menindee Main Weir through to Weir 32, adjacent to the Menindee township.

“It is estimated that millions of fish, predominantly Bony Herring (Bony Bream) have been affected, as well as smaller number of other large-bodied species such as Murray Cod, Golden Perch, Silver Perch and Carp,” said the department.

Cameron Lay, Director of freshwater environments at NSW DPI, told local media that the situation is “very distressing”.

Iran's security chief in Iraq after Saudi détente, UAE talks

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani (L) meets with his Iraqi counterpart, Qassim al-Araji, upon arrival at Baghdad airport on March 19, 2023.

The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) has traveled to Baghdad to hold talks with Iraqi officials and sign a joint security cooperation document, following his landmark trips to China and the United Arab Emirates.

Heading a delegation, Ali Shamkhani was welcomed by his Iraqi counterpart, Qassim al-Araji, at Baghdad airport on Sunday.

He also paid a visit to the site where Iran’s legendary anti-terror commander Gen. Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), were assassinated by the US three years ago.

Shamkhani is expected to meet with top Iraqi political and economic officials and sign a joint security cooperation document that has been discussed for several months.

The signing of the document, which reinforces mutual responsibility and commitment with the aim of protecting good neighborliness and securing common borders, plays a key role in ending the illegal presence of armed counter-revolutionary elements and those affiliated with the Israeli regime in Iran’s northwestern borders.

Shamkhani recently represented Iran in the China-hosted talks that led to the restoration of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia after seven years of estrangement.

He also visited the UAE upon an invitation by Emirati National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al-Nahyan.

In the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, an infamous incident hogged liemight all over the world. Then India teammates Harbhajan Singh and S Sreesanth, playing for opposing teams in the IPL, were involved in one of the biggest controversies to hit the tournament. Certain media reports claimed that Sreesanth — playing for Kings XI Punjab — was allegedly slapped by Mumbai Indians star Harbhajan Singh. Subsequently, the off-spinner received a lengthy ban. Though a lot has been listened and discussed about it till date, Sreesanth has cleared more air after 14 years of the incident.

“We have always been friends. That was just a misunderstanding and the media made a big noise out of it. I will just say that Bhajji pa has supported me from the beginning in every way, including recently with commentary tips. He has supported me and helped me a lot and I am very thankful to him. There is that song, ‘Tere jaisa yaar kaha’, that is my relationship with him,” said Sreesanth on Sports Yaari.

Having already admitted his mistake and apologised for the unruly incident, Harbhajan Singh last year had opened up on the infamous incident once again. This time in the presence of Sreesanth.

The duo appeared on ‘Pitch-Ed Battles with Vikram Sathaye’ on Glance Live Fest where Harbhajan spoke about the embarrassment both him and Sreesanth had to go through after the incident.

“Whatever happened in that IPL match, it was wrong. From my side it was wrong. I made a mistake by doing that. Because of it my colleague, my own teammate had to face embarrassment. I had to face the embarrassment that I had done a thing like this,” said the former India spinner.

We are back for the chase.

Right then, Australia will undoubtedly be the happier side at the halfway mark and they are on a course to level the series. This is India’s 4th-lowest ODI total in India which sums up the kind of day they have had with the bat but the onus is now on their bowlers to replicate what their counterparts did. Can the Indian bowlers make a match out of this? We shall find out shortly. Back in a bit for the chase.

Sean Abbott is in for a flash interview. He says that there was some help from the wicket. Adds that Mitchell Starc and Cameron Green set the tone with early wickets. Mentions that Starc was clinical in this game. Tells that they were not expecting that much movement, but there was a lot of rain and that is why they saw swing early on as well as a bit of seam. Ends by saying that they should chase this total down, but you don’t know the par score until both teams bat and says that they will try to put pressure on the Indian bowlers and reckons it will be a good contest.

In what has been their Achilles heel, India have once again capitulated to left-arm swing bowling. Having been sent into bat, India were dealt an early blow losing Shubman Gill on the third ball of the game. Virat Kohli joined Rohit Sharma in the middle and the pair was quick to pounce on anything loose. Just when India were going along nicely, they were pegged back as they lost two wickets in quick succession. Moreover, KL Rahul could not carry on from the last game and was dismissed for a low score. Hardik Pandya followed him soon to a spectacular catch from Steven Smith, which made matters worse for the hosts. Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja did get together to resurrect the innings but neither of them was able to convert their start to a big score. Towards the end, Axar Patel struck a few lusty blows as he was running out of partners but the departure of Mohammed Siraj brought an end to India’s troubles with the bat.

Australian bowlers have vindicated their skipper’s decision to bowl first and how. A dominant bowling display led by Mitchell Starc has helped them bowl India out for a paltry total of 117. Like the first ODI, it was Mitchell Starc who set the tone early, accounting for Shubman Gill. After that early scalp, he did lose his radar on a few occasions but bounced back striking twice in two deliveries. He then went on to remove the in-form KL Rahul to put India in more trouble. After being brought on as the first change, Sean Abbott came to the party as well to reduce India to 49-5. Having picked in the side for this game, Nathan Ellis dismissed Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja to break the back of the Indian batting lineup. Sean Abbott then went bang, bang before Mitchell Starc claimed the final wicket to finish with figures of 5 for 53.

25.6 overs (0 Run) OUT! TIMBER! A five-wicket haul for Mitchell Starc! Mohammed Siraj fails to see out the last delivery and India have been bowled out for just 117 runs here. Starc comes over the wicket and serves this on a good length, angling in, but straightens after hitting the deck, Mohammed Siraj tries to keep it out, but plays down the wrong line and the ball goes through to shatter the stumps.

25.5 overs (0 Run) An appeal for LBW, but turned down. Steven Smith takes the reviiew though. Mitchell Starc lands this on a good length and around off, angling in, Mohammed Siraj looks to block it out, but misses and gets hit on the pads. UltraEdge shows no bat involved and Ball Tracking shows that impact is umpire’s call and wickets is missing. The on-field decision remains and Siraj now has one ball to play out.

25.4 overs (1 Run) A low full toss, on leg, Axar Patel clips it towards fine leg for a single now. Mohammed Siraj has two balls to survive.

25.3 overs (0 Run) Back of a length and around off, Axar Patel guides it towards third man, but denies the run.

25.2 overs (6 Runs) SIX! Two in a row! Mitchell Starc bowls this full again and down the leg, Axar Patel moves a bit across and whips it over the fine leg fence for another maximum. IND vs AUS: 2nd ODI: It's a SIX! Axar Patel hits Mitchell Starc. IND 116/9 (25.2 Ov). CRR: 4.58

25.1 overs (6 Runs) SIX! BANG! Axar Patel goes big now! This is pitched up, on middle, and in the slot, Axar Patel stays in his crease and lofts it towards the long on fence where the ball falls directly into the cushions for a biggie. IND vs AUS: 2nd ODI: It's a SIX! Axar Patel hits Mitchell Starc. IND 110/9 (25.1 Ov). CRR: 4.37

Visakhapatnam: Rain is likely to play a role in the second ODI between India and Australia at Visakhapatnam.

The second ODI between India and Australia will be played at Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. But weather could play a spoilsport and ruin the party of millions of cricket fans who will catch this match live from the stadium or through electronic mediums. Earlier, a weather forecast had suggested the likelihood of rain on Saturday and Sunday in Visakhapatnam, where rain was reported multiple times on Saturday evening.

Andhra Cricket Association secretary SR Gopinath Reddy said on Saturday that there is a good arrangement of super soppers and an underground drainage system at the stadium.

“There is a good arrangement of super soppers and underground drainage system in the stadium. We are also covering the whole outfield, not only the pitch. The drainage system in this ground is good. If it rains only for a few hours, then the game can be started after drying the ground. But if it rains for a long time, it will affect the match. After the rain stops, we can prepare the ground within an hour,” said Reddy to ANI.

India is currently leading the three-match ODI series by 1-0.

In the first match, spells from Mohammed Shami (3/17), Mohammed Siraj (3/29) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/46) helped India bundled out Australia for 188 in just 35.4 overs. Only Mitchell Marsh (81 off 65) was able to make a big contribution with the bat.

In the chase of 189, Mitchell Starc’s (3/49) opening spell reduced India to 39/4 and Marcus Stoinis also took two scalps, but a 108-run stand between KL Rahul (75*) and Ravindra Jadeja (45*) helped India seal a five-wicket win with more than 10 overs to spare.

Jadeja was adjudged as ‘Man of the Match’ for his all-round performance.

The third ODI will take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on March 22.

Earlier, India had won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia after sealing a 2-1 win in the red-ball leg of the series. With this win, they have qualified for the ICC World Test Championship and will face Australia at The Oval, London from June 7 onwards.

Airlines misguiding people, forcing passengers to pay more, says Parliamentary Panel

New Delhi: A Parliamentary Standing Committee has taken note of the high air fares charged by some airline operators in the domestic sector, and held that they are misguiding the public and forcing passengers to pay more.

The Committee also pointed out the wrong information published by the private airlines on their websites, regarding the number of seats left in the flight and the prices of the tickets.

“The level of misinformation can be gauged from the fact that even after the last tickets have been sold, the same number of seats show on the website, as indicated before the tickets sale. This indicates that airline operators are misguiding the public and forcing passengers to pay more,” the panel said in the Demand for Grants (2023-24) report of the Civil Aviation Ministry.

In view of the above, it recommended that the Ministry should formulate appropriate guidelines regarding rationalisation of fares and publishing the correct information on the website of the airlines.

It also pointed out that ‘Predatory Pricing’ is being restored to by the domestic airlines sector. “A particular airline may sell its air tickets at such a low level, that other competitors cannot compete and are forced to exit the market. A company that does this will see initial losses, but eventually it benefits by driving competition out of the market and raising its prices again,” said the report.

The Committee desired to know whether aviation regulator, the DGCA had at any point of time intervened to check the fares of air tickets. It also expressed concern at the fact that in the domestic sector, private airlines are charging different fares for the same sector, route and same direction of flights.

This is specifically so for the northeastern region and hilly areas including Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, where the prices of domestic sector tickets are, sometimes, even more than the international airline sector prices.

The Committee took note of the fact that after the repeal of the Air Corporations Act, 1953, the airfare is market driven and depends on market fares, and is neither established nor regulated by the government.

“It notes the DGCA’s comments that the airfares were regulated for a fixed period during the Covid pandemic in compliance with Aircraft Act, 1934 and the regulation was withdrawn as the Covid pandemic abated and that airlines are free to fix reasonable tariffs under the Aircraft Rules, 1937, with regard to cost of operation, services, reasonable profit and generally prevailing tariff,” said the report.

Nasrallah, Islamic Jihad head discuss closer coordination against Israel

Secretary-General of the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, (R) and Palestinian Islamic Jihad chief Ziyad Nakhalah meet in a southern suburb of Beirut, Lebanon, on March 18, 2023.

Secretary-General of the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad chief Ziyad Nakhalah have discussed increased cooperation between the two groups in the face of the Israeli regime and talked over the latest developments in the Middle East.

The two sides reviewed the challenges facing the Palestinian resistance during a meeting in a southern suburb of Beirut on Saturday and underlined the need for greater future cooperation between the two movements in a way that would further bolster the resistance front to counter Israeli plots, Lebanon’s Arabic-language al-Mayadeen television news network reported.

Nasrallah and Nakhalah also praised the heroism of the Palestinian nation, and the bravery of resistance fighters “who have been courageously standing up against Israeli militia groups and military forces across the occupied  Palestinian territories, especially in al-Quds and the West Bank.”

Last week, the Hezbollah leader stressed the significance of all developments taking place throughout Palestinian lands.

“Special attention should now be paid to rendering assistance to Palestinian resistance fighters, who are trying to push the occupying Israeli regime into the abyss,” he said at the time.

Over the past months, Israel has ramped up attacks on Palestinian towns and cities throughout the occupied territories. As a result of these attacks, dozens of Palestinians have lost their lives and many others have been arrested.

Most of the raids have focused on Nablus and Jenin, where Israeli forces have been trying to stifle a growing Palestinian resistance in the occupied cities.

Local and international rights groups have condemned Israel’s excessive use of force and “shoot-to-kill policy” against Palestinians.
