"Resolve Impasse…": Supreme Court Pulls Up Tamil Nadu Governor Over Bills

Supreme Court Raps Tamil Nadu Governor For Referring Bills To President

Tamil Nadu vs Governor Over Bills: The Supreme Court will now take up the matter on December 11.

New Delhi/Chennai:

The Supreme Court today asked Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi to hold a meeting with Chief Minister MK Stalin and resolve the impasse over delays in clearing bills.

“We would like the Governor to resolve the impasse. I think the governor invites the chief minister and let them sit down and discuss it,” the Supreme court said.

The Supreme Court’s observation came after senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for the state government, told the top court that the Governor has referred the 10 bills re-adopted by the assembly to President Droupadi Murmu.

A bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud said that the Governor observed that the bills re-adopted by the assembly cannot be reserved for the President.

The Supreme Court will now take up the matter on December 11.

Mr Ravi earlier this month returned ten bills – two of which were passed by the earlier AIADMK government. The Tamil Nadu Assembly then held a special session to re-adopt all ten bills, which were sent back to the Governor for his assent.

The Tamil Nadu government has accused the BJP-appointed Governor of deliberately delaying the bills’ clearance and scuttling the state’s development by “undermining the elected administration”.

Mr Stalin, in a stinging attack on Mr Ravi, told the assembly that withholding assent without any reason was unacceptable.

“He returned the bills due to his personal whims and fancies… it is undemocratic and anti-people to not give assent. The Governor can’t withhold assent if the bills are passed in the assembly again and sent to him,” he said.

“Governor R N Ravi does this to keep all the powers with himself. He believes an elected government has no powers,” said Tamil Nadu Law Minister Sevugan Regupathy.

The Supreme Court on November 10, while hearing a petition filed by the Tamil Nadu Government, expressed “serious concern” over the delay by governors in giving assent to the bills passed by the state assemblies.

“These bills were pending since 2020. What was he doing for three years?” it asked.

Kolkata Police summons 12 BJP MLAs for questioning in National Anthem disrespect case

Kolkata: Kolkata Police on Friday issued summons to 12 BJP MLAs for questioning in connection with complaints filed against them for disrespecting the National Anthem within the state Assembly premises.

The MLAs have been asked to be present at the city police’s headquarters at Lalbazar central Kolkata on December 4. However, it is yet to be clear whether the BJP leaders will got to the city police headquarter on December 4 to honour the notice.

Confirming the receipt of the notice, BJP legislator from Siliguri in Darjeeling district Shankar Ghosh said that any decision in the matter will be taken by the BJP’s legislative party in West Bengal after discussing the matter with the leader of the opposition in the state Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari.

“This is a deliberate attempt by the ruling Trinamool Congress in connivance with city police,” Ghosh said. The leader of the opposition has claimed that he is considering moving the court on this count and discussing with his legal brains in the matter.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress has hinted that they might bring a motion on the floor of the Assembly during the ongoing winter session of the House to condemn the insult of the National Anthem by the BJP legislators.

On Thursday, an FIR was filed against the 12 BJP legislators at Hare Street Police Station in central Kolkata following a complaint by three Trinamool Congress legislators on this count.

The complaint was that the BJP leader started shouting “thieves, thieves” slogans within the state Assembly premises, when the ruling Trinamool Congress activists were singing the National Anthem on Wednesday.

Iran leaves COP 28 in protest of Israeli regime's presence

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s delegation, headed by the energy minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian protested the presence of the officials of the Zionist regime in 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference on Friday and left it in a show of protest.

The Iranian diplomatic delegation had participated in this meeting after they had received information about the non-attendance of officials from the Zionist regime and they left the conference after learning about their participation.

The news and political analysis had indicated that the occupying Zionist regime would not risk attending the event for fear of repercussions of their horrible crimes in Gaza over the past weeks.

When leaving the conference, the Iranian energy minister told media that, “The leaders of about 150 countries were invited to attend the COP 28  and estimates showed that a significant number of these invitees, including the officials of the Zionist regime, were not going to attend at the conference.”

He added that the Islamic Republic of Iran’s delegation intended to use the opportunity that the Dubai-hosted international conference provides to shed light on Gaza situation and negotiate with the authorities and delegations of different countries and defend the oppressed Palestinian nation.

Accordingly, the Iranian delegation decided to leave the event for the participation of the Zionist regime’s delegation headed by the head of the regime, Mehrabian said, adding that Iran argues that the Israeli delegation’s attendance is in contraction with the conference’s declared objectives.

The Zionist Israeli regime resumed its aggression on Gaza on Friday morning as its head Isaac Herzog attended the UAE-hosted COP 28.

Iranian and Omani military forces have staged a day-long joint naval rescue and relief exercise in the Hormuz Strait and the northern tip of the Indian Ocean as the two neighbors move to build stronger relations.

Combat vessels and airborne units of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy, the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), the Naval Division of the Border Police, the Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran, and the Royal Navy of Oman took part in the drills on Thursday.

The naval exercise was held in the presence of the heads of the joint military friendship commissions of the two countries.

The main goals of the naval drills were described as boosting combat readiness, and implementing bilateral agreements on maritime security.

Iranian drones carried out observation and monitoring operations in the northern parts of the Indian Ocean and the Strait of Hormuz, and the country’s reconnaissance aircraft made several sorties to survey all military and merchant vessels cruising in the vicinity of the area at the time.

Iranian and Omani military forces managed to successfully implement various scenarios during the joint drill, showcasing their coordination.

Moreover, the presence of Iranian homegrown destroyers Dena and Sahand alongside indigenous combat watercraft manifested the country’s self-sufficiency in the defense industry.

Iranian and Omani military forces have held several joint naval drills in recent years.

Iran has staged joint naval exercises with other countries, including Pakistan and Russia, as well.

Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great progress in developing and manufacturing a broad range of military equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in this regard. Iran has also held several military units with the aim of testing its combat preparedness in face of possible threats.

Iranian officials have repeatedly underscored that the Islamic Republic will not hesitate to build up its defense capabilities, emphasizing such abilities are entirely meant for the purpose of defense and will be never subject to negotiations.

Watch: NZ Star Accused Of 'Applying Saliva' On Ball, Incident Reported

Watch: New Zealand Star Accused Of Applying Saliva On Ball, Incident Reported To 4th Umpire

New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been accused of using saliva to shine the ball during Day 3 of the ongoing first Test against Bangladesh in Sylhet. The incident took place during the 34th over when Phillips applied saliva on the ball after bowling the first delivery to Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto. After stumps on Day 3, Bangladesh team manager Nafees Iqbal said that they were aware of the “incident and had seen the footage”, and also revealed that they had informed the fourth umpire over the same.

On field umpires, Ahsan Raza and Paul Reiffel, however, didn’t take any actions at that time despite being aware of the situation.

Law 41.3 of the game, updated and put into effect on October 1, 2022, states, “When cricket resumed following the onset of Covid-19, playing conditions were written in most forms of the game stating that applying saliva to the ball was no longer permitted. MCC’s research found that this had little or no impact on the amount of swing the bowlers were getting. Players were using sweat to polish the ball, and this was equally effective.”

“The new Laws will not permit the use of saliva on the ball, which also removes any grey areas of fielders eating sugary sweets to alter their saliva to apply to the ball. Using saliva will be treated the same way as any other unfair methods of changing the condition of the ball,” it adds.

Meanwhile, on Day 3 of the opening Test, Bangladesh skipper Shanto’s unbeaten ton put the hosts in control.

Bangladesh were 308/7 at Lunch in their second innings, leading New Zealand by 301 runs.

Earlier, in reply to Bangladesh’s total of 310 in the first innings, New Zealand had taken a narrow seven-run lead after being bowled out for 317.

21-Year-Old Hostage Released By Hamas Was Operated On By Vet, Claims Family

21-Year-Old Hostage Released By Hamas Was Operated On By Vet, Claims Family

Mia Schem was at a dance party with her friends when Hamas operatives stormed in and started firing.

New Delhi:

Mia Schem was at a dance party with her friends when Hamas operatives stormed in and started firing. While trying to flee, the 21-year-old got shot in the arm and was eventually caught and taken hostage. After spending 54 days in captivity, Mia was finally released on Thursday as part of the truce deal between Israel and Hamas.

Photos released by the Israeli prime minister’s office showed Mia, who also holds French nationality, embracing her mother and brother after they were reunited at Hatzerim military base in Israel.

Mia had become a known face after she appeared in a video by Hamas claiming that the hostages were being treated well. In the video, the Israeli-French tattoo artist is being treated by an unidentified medical worker. In the clip, she also asked to be returned to her family as soon as possible.

“Hi, I’m Mia Schem, 21 years old from Shoham. Currently, I’m in Gaza. I was seriously injured in my hand. I underwent surgery on my hand at the hospital for 3 hours. They are taking care of me, giving me medicine, everything is fine,” she says in the video.

“I only ask that they bring me home as soon as possible to my parents, to my siblings. Get me out of here as soon as possible. Please,” she adds.

Hamas shared the 78-second video on their Telegram channel last month. It was condemned by France and also promoted Mia’s other Keren to hold a press conference seeking her daughter’s immediate release.

Mia Schem’s family though contradicted what was shown in the video and claimed that the surgery on her hand was performed by a veterinarian.

“She is thin, she is weak. A vet operated on her hand. She did not receive physiotherapy. She told them she is not an Israeli soldier and is a French citizen,” her aunt told media yesterday, contradicting what was shown in the video.

French President Emmanuel Macron also expressed joy as soon as Mia was released. “Mia Schem is free. It is a great joy that I share with his family and all French people,” he said.

A social media user recently shared a harrowing incident involving his female friend who allegedly faced sexual assault by a Rapido auto driver in Bengaluru. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), user Ankur Bagchi (@JustAnkurBagchi) narrated the incident that took place on Wednesday. He revealed that his friend not only experienced inappropriate touching by the Rapido auto driver but also was forcibly thrown out from the moving vehicle when she resisted. He accused the company of enabling sexual predators and urged others not to use the aggregator service.

“Rapido enables sexual predators. Do not use Rapido. One of my friends got sexually assaulted last night by a @rapidobikeapp auto driver. She was touched inappropriately and when she pushed back, she was thrown out of a moving auto,” Mr Bagchi wrote on Thursday.

The X user further disclosed that initially, despite his friend filing a complaint with Rapido, the company merely apologised without providing any details about the auto-rickshaw driver. “We’re working on sorting this out, but in the meantime she needs medical care,” Mr Bagchi wrote, adding, “Be safe. Tell your female friends and family not to use Rapido”.

Mr Bagchi’s post soon caught the attention of many social media users. It also saw a response from Bengaluru City Police, who asked for more details of the incident. “Please provide specific area details of the incident and your contact number via DM,” the cops wrote.

In another post, Mr Bagchi then shared that an First Information Report (FIR) was filed against the driver. He also praised Rapido for their help in dealing with the issue.

“@JustAnkurBagchi As discussed with the customer, Rapido is getting the captain to the HAL police station at 4:30pm to proceed legally on this,” Rapido Cares wrote in response to Mr Bagchi’s tweet.

“Following up on this matter,  the captain has been terminated permanently and barred from our platform,” the company informed. “We apologize again for the captain’s unethical behaviour. We have acknowledged your complaint and the basis on which we have barred the rider from our platform,” it wrote in another post.
