Iran dismisses ‘misleading’ E3 statement on its missile program

Iran’s IRGC unveiled the homegrown Fattah-2 hypersonic missile on November 19, 2023.

Iran has dismissed a “misleading, politically-motivated” statement issued by Britain, France, and Germany regarding the unveiling of Fattah-2 missile.

In a statement on Friday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kan’ani said claims by the European trio, also known as the E3, about the Iranian missile lack legal basis.

He said all UN Security Council restrictions on Iran’s missile program have been terminated as of October 18 under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Therefore, the E3 claims against Iran’s missile program are unacceptable and illegal, Kan’ani said.

In their statement on Thursday, the E3 condemned the unveiling of a new ballistic missile variant by Iran on November 19 and said Iran continues to develop its missile program despite repeated international calls to halt it.

The three European parties to the JCPOA also accused Iran of playing a “destabilizing” role in the region and the world and announced that they would take “every diplomatic step to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.”

Kan’ani said the development of Iran’s convenient missile capability pursues a deterrent goal in accordance with the country’s defense needs.

Baseless allegations, the Iranian diplomat said, would in no way influence Iran’s legitimate defense activities. Kana’ani advised the E3 to avoid leveling such allegations that would harm interaction between Tehran and Europe.

Iranian military experts and engineers have in recent years made remarkable breakthroughs in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient. Iranian officials have repeatedly underscored that the country will not hesitate to strengthen its military capabilities, including its missile power, which are entirely meant for defense.

Shrine Of Imam Reza In Iran's Mashhad, Once Visited By Guru Nanak

Shrine Of Imam Reza In Iran's Mashhad, Once Visited By Guru Nanak

New Delhi:

The Shrine of Imam Reza in Iran’s Mashhad is one of the largest mosque complexes in the world – spoken of in the same breath as those in Mecca and Medina – and reportedly counted Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, as one among the millions who have visited it over the years.

It feeds over 10,000 devotees daily, hosts weddings, and its 2.5 lakh sq km contains a fully-equipped hospital, a library and a museum, as well as the mausoleum of Imam Reza, the eighth Imam, who is from the lineage of Hazrat Ali and Fatima Zahra – the daughter of the Prophet Mohammed

Around three crore people from all around the world, including India, visit his grave every year. According to Hussain Yazdinizad, a shrine committee member, this includes people from other faiths. “There are arrangements for those who do not know Persian… for them we have kept translators who speak different languages and can tell them about the mosque,” he said.

An organisation called Astan-e-Quds Razavi manages the shrine; the committee is the oldest such Iran and counts around 20,000 volunteers from businessmen to college professors, who do everything from welcoming visitors and pick up their shoes to serve them tea.

The shrine also boasts a copy of the Dome of the Rock, made in memory of the Al Aqsa Mosque, which is in Jerusalem. Here, the people of Iran stand with those of Palestine – a significant fact given the current geopolitical tension in the Middle East.

According to Shia history, there were 12 Imams after the Prophet. The first was Hazrat Ali and the eighth was Ali Reza. The 12th and final was Hazrat Mehdi, who tradition says is still alive and will come into the world just before the apocalypse.

The graves of 10 of the Imams are either in Iraq or Saudi Arabia; that of Ali Reza is the only one in Iran. The shrine of his sister, Fatima Masooma-e-Qum, is also in Iran, in Qum.

UN deplores ‘catastrophic’ resumption of Israel’s war on Gaza

The United Nations has deplored the “catastrophic” resumption of Israel’s genocidal war on the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The UN humanitarian office in Geneva said on Friday the resumption of Israeli attacks on the defenseless Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip meant “hell on Earth has returned to Gaza.”

Israeli warplanes restarted nonstop airstrikes on Gaza as an extended week-long ceasefire between the regime and the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas expired on Friday.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Friday he regretted that military operations had resumed in Gaza after the collapse of the truce.

“I deeply regret that military operations have started again in Gaza,” Guterres wrote on the X social media platform.

Volker Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said the “resumption of hostilities in Gaza is catastrophic.”

“I urge all parties and states with influence over them to redouble efforts, immediately, to ensure a ceasefire – on humanitarian and human rights grounds.”

Jens Laerke, the spokesperson for the United Nations humanitarian office in Geneva, said the truce had seen significantly larger humanitarian convoys entering Gaza, even reaching north of Wadi Gaza, which prior to the pause had received almost no supplies. “With the resumption of war, we fear that the continuation of this (aid) is now in doubt.”

“The Rafah crossing is closed as of now. We need a resumption of a humanitarian pause, not a return to war.”

Appealing for a lasting ceasefire, UNICEF has said inaction on Gaza amounts to “an approval of the killing of children.”

“A lasting ceasefire must be implemented,” James Elder, spokesperson for UNICEF, told reporters via video link from Gaza.

“Inaction at its core is an approval of the killing of children…. It is reckless to think more attacks on the people of Gaza will lead to anything other than carnage.”

The World Health Organization has also sounded the alarm, warning about the grave situation of medical and relief operation in the Palestinian territory.

“We are extremely concerned about the resumption of violence,” the WHO representative in the Palestinian territories Richard Peeperkorn told reporters in Geneva via video-link from Gaza.

As the Israelis have resumed airstrikes, hospitals are expected to be witnessing the most horrific scenes as Palestinian casualties turn up at relatively small hospitals “in their tens if not hundreds,” the senior WHO emergency officer Rob Holden told reporters in Geneva via video-link from Gaza.

Holden said Gaza’s “healthcare service is on its knees.”

Since October 7, Israel killed more than 15,000 people, mostly women and children, in Gaza.

Telangana Cabinet Meet To Be Held Day After Assembly Poll Counting

Election for the 119-seat assembly in Telangana was held on November 30. (File)

The Telangana cabinet meeting is scheduled to be held on December 4, a day after the votes of the assembly elections are counted.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao will chair the meeting at 2 pm, an official release from KCR’s office said without disclosing the agenda.

Election for the 119-seat assembly was held on November 30.

KCR contested from two segments-Gajwel and Kamareddy.

In a post on X, BRS working president K T Rama Rao said, “After a long time had a peaceful sleep. Exit polls can take a hike. Exact polls will give us good news.” Dismissing some exit-poll surveys that suggested that the ruling BRS will fall short of a majority in the Assembly polls, Rama Rao had said the Chandrasekhar Rao-led dispensation will return to power with over 70 seats.

Hyderabad: The Habeebnagar police along with the Task Force on Friday nabbed three persons on charges of attempting bogus voting during the assembly polls.

The arrested persons are Mohd.Zakir (40), a car dealer, Mohd.Shabuddin (28), a student, and Ritesh Gupta (38), a trader, all three from Nampally.

Police said the trio had plotted to carry out bogus voting on the polling day and were waiting at a place of worship for a right oppurtunity, when they were nabbed.

The suspects collected the voter list and had identified voters who had vacated their homes and fraudulently used their voter identity numbers to print information slips for conducting bogus polling.

Police seized voter lists, duplicate voter ID cards, unused cotton, a chemical bottle, a mini slip printing machine, and paper rolls from the accused individuals.

Palestinian, Lebanese resistance hit back as Israel resumes bombing Gaza

The Al-Qassam Brigades has fired barrages of missiles at Tel Aviv and other cities in the Israeli-occupied territories in response to the Israeli bombing of civilians in Gaza, as its fighters engaged in fierce clashes with Israeli troops inside the strip.

Al-Qassam, the armed wing of the Hamas resistance movement, said in separate statements on Friday that it fired rockets at the cities of Asqalan, Ashdod, Sderot, Netivot, and Beersheba, as well as the Ra’im military base.

It also said its fighters attacked Israeli forces in northern Gaza, including an Israeli tank and a troop carrier.

They attacked a group of Israeli soldiers stationed inside a building in Beit Hanoun using four anti-personnel and anti-fortification shells, a statement said.

Separately, the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, said it attacked several towns in response to Israeli bombings. It said it targeted the Kissufim kibbutz with 107 missiles.

The movement said its fighters had engaged in fierce clashes with Israeli soldiers near Al-Rantisi Hospital in the Al-Nasr neighborhood in Gaza City.

The Al-Quds brigades also said its fighters shot down an Israeli Skylark drone in central Gaza.

Hezbollah resumes attacks

The Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah also resumed its anti-Israel operations in support of the resistance in Gaza, which were on a pause throughout the seven-day truce.

The movement said it targeted groups of Israeli soldiers at Jal al-Alam, Al-Marj, and Ramya military positions, as well as the Ramim barracks.

Israeli occupation’s artillery attacked several areas in southern Lebanon, killing a mother and her son in the Lebanese town of Houla.

Hezbollah has vowed the Lebanon-Palestine border would remain an active front line as long as Israel’s aggression against Gaza continues.

Gaza’s Ministry of Health says at least 109 people have been killed and hundreds more have been injured as the Israeli regime resumed military operations and targeted residential areas and refugee camps across the densely-populated areas since Friday morning when a week-long truce expired.

The truce, which was extended twice, began on November 24. It had paused brutal Israeli strikes on Gaza that began in early October and killed more than 15,000 Palestinians.

International bodies have called for more time to get medical supplies, food and fuel into Gaza, where an estimated 1.7 million people have been forced from their homes.

The fighting resumed after US top diplomat Antony Blinken visited the region and held talks with Israeli leaders. Other world leaders, and aid groups, had sought an extended pause.

Mumbai Civic Body Plans Cloud Seeding To Curb Air Pollution, Invites Bids

Mumbai Civic Body Plans Cloud Seeding To Curb Air Pollution, Invites Bids

The air quality in Mumbai deteriorated sharply in the last two months. (File)

Mumbai:

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday invited Global Expression of Interest (GEOI) for initiating a cloud seeding program for artificial rain to combat air pollution in Mumbai.

The deputy chief engineer (civil) of the BMC’s environment department invited GEOI for running a cloud seeding program.

Reputed firms which have experience of undertaking cloud seeding in the last three years can submit their bids before December 14, the BMC said in a newspaper advertisement.

Cloud seeding is a technique aimed at enhancing the probability of rain.

A civic official told PTI that the selected firm will be appointed for three years. It will undertake cloud seeding whenever air pollution spikes in the city and the situation is favourable for such an attempt.

After receiving expressions of interest, the BMC will call for financial offers from the interested firms.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had recently directed the civic body to give the artificial rain technique a shot as a way of mitigating air pollution in the country’s financial capital. The air quality in the city deteriorated sharply in the last two months.

Eknath Shinde had then said that the civic body had already approached a Dubai-based company.
