Security Stepped Up At Sagar Dam As Andhra, Telangana Clash Over Water

Telangana cops deployed at Nagarjuna Sagar dam, in Nalgonda district.

Hyderabad:

Just hours before Telangana went to polls, Andhra Pradesh took charge of the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam and began releasing water, leading to tensions between the two states. At around 2 am on Thursday, when most Telangana officials were busy with the polls, nearly 700 Andhra cops stormed into the project and opened the right canal to release 500 cusecs of Krishna water per hour.

“We are releasing water from Nagarjunasagar right canal on Krishna river for the drinking water purposes,” Andhra Pradesh state irrigation minister Ambati Rambabu posted a cryptic message on X on Thursday morning.

But the minister then clarified that they have only taken water that belongs to the state according to the treaty between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

“We have not flouted any treaty. 66% of Krishna water belongs to Andhra Pradesh and 34% to Telangana. We have not used even a single drop of water that does not belong to us. We tried to open our canal in our territory. This water is rightfully ours,” Mr Rambabu told the media.

With tensions flaring, the Centre has stepped in and urged both states to revert to the release of Nagarjuna Sagar waters as of November 28. The proposal was made by Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla during a video conference with Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Both states have agreed to the plan.

To avoid further conflict, the dam will be supervised by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) which will also oversee that both sides are getting water as per the deal.

The incident came to light on Thursday when Telangana Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari alleged that about 500 armed policemen from Andhra Pradesh came to Nagarjuna Sagar Dam and damaged the CCTV cameras and released about 5,000 cusecs of water by opening the head regulators located at gate number 5 and 7.

The move by Andhra Pradesh created “law and order issues” in Telangana subsequently, when polling for the state assembly elections was going on, she said, expressing concern that it would seriously disrupt the drinking water supply of two crore people of Hyderabad and surrounding areas.

Two cases were registered against Andhra Police in Nalgonda district of Telangana.

In 2015, the Andhra Police had made a similar effort to barge into the dam, but Telangana security forces rushed to the spot and prevented the attempt.

Outdoor air pollution accounts for over 2 million deaths annually in India: BMJ study

Outdoor air pollution accounts for over 2 million deaths annually in India: BMJ study

New Delhi: Outdoor air pollution from all sources accounts for 2.18 million deaths per year in India, second only to China, according to a modelling study published in The BMJ.

The research found that air pollution from using fossil fuels in industry, power generation, and transportation accounts for 5.1 million extra deaths a year worldwide.
This equates to 61 per cent of a total estimated 8.3 million deaths worldwide due to ambient (outdoor) air pollution from all sources in 2019, which could potentially be avoided by replacing fossil fuels with clean, renewable energy, the researchers said.

These new estimates of fossil fuel-related deaths are larger than most previously reported values suggesting that phasing out fossil fuels might have a greater impact on attributable mortality than previously thought, they said.

The team, including researchers from Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Germany, used a new model to estimate all cause and cause-specific deaths due to fossil fuel-related air pollution and to assess potential health benefits from policies that replace fossil fuels with clean, renewable energy sources.

They assessed excess deaths — the number of deaths above that expected during a given time period — using data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study, NASA satellite-based fine particulate matter and population data, and atmospheric chemistry, aerosol, and relative risk modeling for 2019, in four scenarios.

The first scenario assumes that all fossil fuel-related emission sources are phased out. The second and third scenarios assume that 25 per cent and 50 per cent of exposure reductions towards the fossil phase-out are realized.

The fourth scenario removes all human-induced (anthropogenic) sources of air pollution, leaving only natural sources such as desert dust and natural wildfires.

The results show that in 2019, 8.3 million deaths worldwide were attributable to fine particles (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) in ambient air, of which 61 per cent (5.1 million) were linked to fossil fuels.

This corresponds to 82 per cent of the maximum number of air pollution deaths that could be averted by controlling all anthropogenic emissions, according to the researchers.

Attributable deaths to all sources of ambient air pollution were highest across South and East Asia, particularly in China with 2.44 million per year, followed by India with 2.18 million per year, they said.

The researchers found that most (52 per cent) of deaths were related to common conditions such as ischemic heart disease (30 per cent), stroke (16 per cent), chronic obstructive lung disease (16 per cent) and diabetes (6 per cent).

About 20 per cent were undefined but are likely to be partly linked to high blood pressure and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, they said.

Phasing out fossil fuels would result in the largest absolute reductions in attributable deaths in South, South East and East Asia, amounting to about 3.85 million annually, the researchers said.

This is equivalent to 80-85 per cent of potentially preventable deaths from all anthropogenic sources of ambient air pollution in these regions, they said.In high-income countries that are largely dependent on fossil energy, about 4.6 lakh (0.46 million) deaths annually could potentially be prevented by a fossil fuel phase out, representing about 90 per cent of the potentially preventable deaths from all anthropogenic sources of ambient air pollution, according to the researchers.

They acknowledge that their new model has led to larger estimates than most previous studies. Reasons for this include taking account of all cause in addition to disease-specific deaths and basing their model solely on studies of ambient air pollution.

As such, the researchers said uncertainty remains, but given the Paris Climate Agreement’s goal of climate neutrality by 2050, “the replacement of fossil fuels by clean, renewable energy sources would have tremendous public health and climate co-benefits.” The ongoing COP28 climate change negotiations in UAE “offer an opportunity to make substantial progress towards phasing out fossil fuels. The health benefits should be high on the agenda,” they concluded.

"Couldn't Do The Job": Wade's Honest Take On Australia's Loss In 4th T20I

Skipper Matthew Wade stated that the Baggy Greens didn’t play well particularly spinners during Australia’s 20-run defeat against India in the fourth T20I in Raipur on Friday. After the defeat, Australia lost the series by 3-1 as the Indian team produced a collective effort from the bat and ball to clinch the 4th T20I by 20 runs. Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi made Australian batters toil hard after the powerplay. Both spinners combined together to scalp four. Even in the middle overs, Australia lost wickets while struggling to find boundaries at regular intervals. Wade reflected back on their overall performance and said, “We just didn’t play spin very well, lost a few little too wickets in the middle as well. The guys came in and did a good job but unfortunately, we couldn’t do the job with the bat. Just to continue to learn from the guys who are already established in the team and to have depth in the squad is really key as the T20 World Cup is around the corner.”

Coming to the match, Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma’s explosive cameos helped India to post a total of 174/9.

Chasing 175 for victory, Travis Head and Josh Philippe opened for Australia. The Aussie openers played a 40-run partnership until Ravi Bishnoi got the first breakthrough and dismissed Philippe in the fourth over on his individual score of eight runs.

Axar Patel bagged an important wicket as he removed Head in the fifth over. Travis had scored 31 runs.

When the margin between the balls and runs started to increase, Australia lost wickets in quick succession just like India did in the first innings.

The Men in Blue bowlers ensured that the pressure remained on Australian batters. They saw out the game and registered a 20-run victory.

New Zealand: 3 Khalistan extremists sentenced for plot to kill Kiwi radio host Harnek Singh

Auckland:

Three Khalistan extremists have been sentenced for the attempted murder of popular Auckland-based radio host Harnek Singh, who has been vocal against the ideology of Khalistan, The Australia Today reported.

Sarvjeet Sidhu, aged 27, pleaded guilty to attempted murder, while Sukhpreet Singh, aged 44, was found guilty of being an accessory. The third individual, a 48-year-old Auckland resident with interim name suppression, planned the attack, harbouring resentment against Harnek Singh for his vocal opposition to the separatist movement, The Australia Today reported, citing NZ Herald.

During the hearing, Judge Mark Woolford emphasised the need for community protection and a strong deterrence against religious fanaticism.

The attack occurred on December 23, 2020, when Harnek Singh was ambushed by a group of religious extremists in his driveway. He suffered over 40 stab wounds and required more than 350 stitches and multiple surgeries to recover.

Judge Woolford remarked, “It bears all the hallmarks of religious fanaticism. … Sentencing in this context requires a different approach. The emphasis must be placed on protecting the community from further violence and it is essential to send a strong message of deterrence to others.”

Harnek Singh, also known as Nekki, had been followed by three cars full of men before the attackers stabbed him “within an inch of his life.” He managed to lock the door of his vehicle and attract neighbours’ attention by sounding the horn, preventing potential bleeding to death from the extensive stab wounds, according to The Australia Today.

Earlier, Avtar Singh, a former bodybuilder, told the court he used to be friends with the man with name suppression, however, he soon stopped associating with the man whom he labelled a “thug” and “mafia” in 2018. “He has a way around people, especially broken people,” Singh said.

Avtar’s friend Baljinder told the court he’d been asked to kill Harnek, but declined. He added that on December 23, Jaspal Singh rang him, “Job is done, he’s no longer going to be on the radio.”

According to the report, there is a 48-year-old defendant (with interim name suppression) who was not present at the time of the attack. This man, the court was told, harboured a years-long resentment against Hranek Singh as the popular Kiwi radio host was vocal against the Khalistan.

“Harnek Singh told the courtroom that his opinions regarding Sikhism probably fall more along the liberal end of the spectrum while the majority of his critics were more on the fundamentalist or conservative side,” as reported by The Australia Today.

In a victim impact statement read aloud by prosecutors, Harnek Singh described the ongoing fear his family faces, “My family faces fear each day when the sun goes down.” He expressed gratitude to the New Zealand justice system for ensuring that “no one is above the law, not even religion.”

Harnek Singh addressed the defendants directly, stating, “You came to kill me. You tried to silence me. You wanted to send a chilling message to all those who express their disagreement with your unorthodox religious views. But you failed.”

He continued, “I will continue to express my opinions and beliefs as I always have. The only chilling message you have managed to send is to people with the same views and opinion as yours that actions have consequences and that in a country like New Zealand, the law does not bend for you if your wrongful acts are in the name of God.”

Harnek Singh’s words resonated with the judge and he repeated them as he sentenced the defendant, The Australia Today reported, citing NZ Herald.

The 48-year-old mastermind behind the attack received a sentence of 13-and-a-half years, with a minimum period of imprisonment of nine years before parole eligibility. Sarvjeet Sidhu was sentenced to nine-and-a-half years’ imprisonment, while Sukhpreet Singh received six months of home detention.

Notably, two men, Jagraj Singh and Gurbinder Singh, were acquitted due to insufficient evidence, while two others, Jobanpreet Singh and Hardeep Singh Sandhu, await sentencing early next year for their involvement in the attempted murder of Harnek Singh.

New Delhi:

Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role, had a stellar start at the box office. The film released in theatres on Friday and it clashed with Meghna Gulzar’s Sam Bahadur at the box office. Animal collected a whopping Rs 61 crore on its release day, reported Sacnilk. Talk about a grand opening. The report stated that “Animal earned 61.00 Cr India net on its first day for all languages.” About the film’s 1st-day box office collection and occupancy – the Hindi rendition collected over Rs 50.50 crore, while the Telugu version collected Rs 10 crore. Animal had an overall 62.47% Hindi occupancy on Friday, the Sacnilk report stated.

Last night, Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared an X (earlier known as Twitter) post about the film’s stellar performance at Indian theatre chains.

Animal opened to average reviews from film critics. In his review for NDTV, film critic Saibal Chatterjee gave the film 1.5 stars out of 5 and he wrote, “Ranbir Kapoor delivers a powerful performance that is supported with customary elan by Anil Kapoor. But because the film is propelled in the main by problematic means and instincts, the efforts of the two stars can only go abegging. You want to look away when the two are peddling their wares.”

Directed by Arjun Reddy director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, other than Ranbir Kapoor, Animal also stars Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Triptii Dimrii in pivotal roles. The film clashed with Vicky Kaushal’s Sam Bahadur at the box office.

Mr Johnson posted a selfie on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday showing the fruits of his labour, which he has code-named “Project Baby Face”. According to the New York Post, he started this project around 10 months ago. It involves him slimming down and reducing his facial volume to appear younger.

“I got really skinny the first year of Blueprint and lost a lot of facial volume,” Mr Johnson, who has documented his efforts to bio-hack his way into reversing his body’s biological age, wrote on X.  “We started Project Baby Face 10 months ago. How are we doing?” he asked his followers. Notably, Blueprint is the name of his endeavour which is marketed as a way to defeat death.

Take a look at the picture below:

Since being shared, Mr Jonshon’s picture has accumulated more than 3.4 million views and over 2,400 likes. It has garnered mixed reactions from social media users. While some loved the tech mogul’s progress, others slammed the 46-year-old’s transformation.

“Love the progress – had thought you’ve been looking younger,” wrote one user. “Facial volume is crucial for a youthful appearance. Excited for the upcoming Project Baby Face protocol!” said another.

“He literally looks his age. he looks tired. i dont see what the hype is,” commented a third user. “Right now, your skin looks unhumanly pale, which is a turn-off for most, as superficial as it may be,” added another.

One user even noted that Mr Jonshon’s hairstyle looked different. “I just want him to change his hair. it looks weird,” they wrote.

India Surpass Pakistan To Script Huge T20I Record After Series Win vs AUS

India have become the team with the most wins in the T20I format on Friday. The Indian cricket team accomplished this feat during the fourth T20I against Australia at Raipur. India won the fourth game by 20 runs, restricting Australia to 154/7 in a chase of 175 runs. They not only won the five-match series 3-1 but also registered their 136th win in the format. Out of 213 T20Is India has played since its debut in the format back in 2006, India has won 136 matches, lost 67 and one has ended in a tie. Three matches have produced no result. India’s win percentage in the format is 63.84.

With this win, they have gone past Pakistan, who have 135 wins in 226 matches.

Other top teams in T20I cricket are: New Zealand (102 wins in 200 matches), Australia (95 wins in 181 matches) and South Africa (95 wins in 171 matches).

Coming to the match, Australia put India to bat. Knocks by Yashasvi Jaiswal (37 in 28 balls, with six fours and a six), Ruturaj Gaikwad (32 in 28 balls, with three fours and a six), Rinku Singh (46 in 29 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes) and Jitesh Sharma (35 in 19 balls, with a four and three sixes) helped India reach 174/9 in 20 overs.

Ben Dwarshuis (3/40) shined with the ball in his second T20I appearance. Tanveer Sangha (2/30) and Jason Behrendorff were also impressive with the ball. Aaron Hardie also got a wicket.

In the chase of 175, Travis Head (31 in 16 balls, with five fours and a six) provided Australia with a fine start, but they soon lost their direction. Matthew Short (22 in 19 balls, with two fours and a six) and skipper Matthew Wade (36 in 23 balls, with two fours and two sixes) tried their best to take the Aussies to the match-winning runs, but they fell 20 runs short.

Axar Patel (3/16) and Ravi Bishnoi (1/17) controlled the run flow fantastically with their spin, while Deepak Chahar took 2/44. Avesh Khan also got a wicket.

India has taken the series 3-1 with a match to go and Axar was chosen as the ‘Player of the Match’.

Hyderabad: Amid tension between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh at the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) reached the dam in Nalgonda district on Friday.

The CRPF personnel were deployed following the intervention by the Union Home Ministry to defuse the tension between the two states over the dam across Krishna River.

Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Friday held a video conference with the Chief Secretaries and DGPs of both the states and both the states agreed to the suggestion by the Union Home Secretary that on the issue of release of water from the dam, the situation that existed before November 28 should be restored, control of the dam be handed over to the Krishna River Water Management Board (KRMB), and CRPF be deployed at the dam.

Telangana Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari said during the video conference that on the night of November 29, 500 armed Andhra Pradesh police personnel came on to the dam, damaged CCTV cameras and by operating head regulator, released 5,000 cusecs of water. She also told the Union Home Secretary that this action by Andhra Pradesh police created a law and order problem on a day when Telangana was busy with the conduct of state Assembly elections. She complained that Andhra Pradesh has resorted to such action for the second time.

Meanwhile, the Union Jal Shakti Ministry has called a meeting on Saturday to resolve the issue between the two states. The ministry has invited Chief Secretaries of both the state and the Chairman of KRMB, officials of the Central Water Commission and the Directors general of the CRPF and the CISF. Earlier, Telangana Police registered two cases against Andhra Pradesh Police for trespass.

Police in Nalgonda district registered the cases a day after Andhra Pradesh police allegedly barged into the premises and took control of half of the dam. The police officials from Andhra Pradesh had also barricaded a part of the dam and restrained entry of Telangana Police and Irrigation Department officials.

Vayupuri Town police of Nalgonda registered the case under sections 447 and 427 r/w 34 of the Indian Penal Code following a complaint from a sub-inspector of Telangana Special Protection Force (TSPF). According to the FIR, around 2.03 a.m. of November 30 about 500 personnel of Andhra Pradesh police force attacked the right bank gate, which is under the control of Telangana Irrigation Department.

It is alleged that the Andhra Pradesh police personnel forcefully trespassed inside the dam and laid barbed wire fencing taking the entire position of the dam from 13th gate to 26th. “They also trespassed on the right canal head regulator and right bank connectivity by violating the existing system in force by breaking four CCTV cameras,” said the FIR.

The Andhra Pradesh police personnel also operated the right canal head regulator irregularly by releasing water for the Andhra region. The water is going waste and against the system in vogue, which is the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) norms, it said. Another case was registered against Andhra Pradesh Police on a complaint by Telangana Irrigation Department.

Meanwhile, the KRMB has directed Andhra Pradesh to stop drawing water from the right canal. It has written a letter to Andhra Pradesh Principal Secretary, Irrigation, directing him to stop drawing water from the right canal. The KRMB mentioned that since the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, Srisailam dam is being controlled by Andhra Pradesh and Nagarjuna Sagar dam by Telangana government.

Delhi: Air quality recorded as ‘very poor’ in several areas

New Delhi: The air quality in the national capital was recorded in the ‘very poor’ category in several areas, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

As per the official data, the air quality in Anand Vihar and Ashok Vihar was recorded as ‘Very Poor’. Anand Vihar had an AQI reading of 388, while Ashok Vihar had an AQI reading of 386 at 6 a.m. on Saturday.

However, this is a slight improvement in both areas, as air quality in Anand Vihar and Ashok Vihar was recorded as ‘severe’ with AQI readings of 412 and 405, respectively, at 6 am on Friday.

The AQI at Lodhi Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was recorded at 349 and 366, respectively, falling in the ‘Very Poor’ category.

Rahul Sachdeva, a local, complained of breathing problems due to pollution.

“I came here with my daughter for a segway. The fun would have doubled if the pollution was less. We are having breathing issues due to pollution. Children are coughing,” he said Abhishek, another local from the city, said, “You can see the situation, it is bad. The pollution is very high. There are breathing issues.” Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said on Wednesday that Grap-3 has been lifted in the national capital but the government is trying to ensure that Grap-1 and 2 are strictly implemented.

The air quality index from 0 to 100 is considered ‘good’, 100 to 200 ‘moderate’, 200 to 300 ‘poor’, 300 to 400 ‘very poor’ and from 400 to 500 or above ‘severe’.
