"Goal Is To Enter 3rd Round Of FIFA WC Qualifiers": India Coach Stimac

The Indian football team is entering the upcoming Asian Cup as ” rank outsiders” and its main goal is to go through to the third round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, head coach Igor Stimac said on Sunday. Stimac was making his assessment based on the level of competition they are expected to face in a tough group comprising continental heavyweights Australia and the physically intimidating Uzbekistan. India are drawn in Group B with World Cup regulars Australia, strong central Asian side Uzbekistan and tricky Syria — all above Stimac’s team in the FIFA rankings — in the group stage of the Asian Cup.

“Obviously, we are rank outsiders in our group. Uzbekistan is one of the dark horses and a fantastic team, their players’ physicality could cause problems.

“Australia are playing at the highest level of football and we all know what they are capable of… they are regular at World Cups and will mostly clear the group stage there,” Stimac said.

India landed in Qatar’s capital on Saturday for the tournament.

And how does he plan to approach the matches? “This group is much stronger than the last Asian Cup. The most important thing for us is to have a good performance and ensure that we remain stable and in shape while playing. I am not putting any pressure on players about results.

“We need to find stability, we will try to play fearless football notwithstanding the teams we play against. I don’t mind the final results. Our final goal is to qualify for the third round of World Cup qualifiers.” While this will be India’s fifth appearance in the AFC Asian Cup, the Blue Tigers have never made it past the group stage after finishing runners-up in 1964, which was played in a round-robin format.

India will begin their campaign against Australia on January 13 followed by matches against Uzbekistan on January 18 and Syria on January 23.

The team will play a warm-up game on January 7 to see where it stands in terms of preparation before the big test.

“Keeping in mind that all the other teams are in Dubai for three weeks already, we are trying to settle down to the climatic conditions and adjust in a proper way in the short time given to us.” Injuries to some key players, such as Jeakson Singh, Glan Martins and Anwar Ali, have disturbed Stimac’s plans just before he was to pick his final squad of 26.

“Things changed dramatically for us with injuries in recent times. Anwar Ali, Ashique Kuruniyan, Glan Martins and Jeakson Singh…we are going to miss them a lot.

“It is not easy to replace Anwar as he is one of the best defenders in Asia. Jeakson was providing us stability in the build-up phase.

“But we don’t have time to think about those who are not with us. We will try to maximise the performance of those players who are with us here,” Stimac said.

Strong and well-built players like Anwar would have proven handy against teams such as Uzbekistan.

“It is not just about physicality, we also lost passing quality and passing ability with these three players,” said Stimac.

The 1998 World Cup semifinalist with Croatia added, “I was very happy to see Sahal (Abdul Samad) settle down at Mohun Bagan and Sandesh Jhingan is doing well at Goa. Now we all know how much Bengaluru FC have lost with the departure of Jhingan and how much Goa has benefitted.” But international football is a different ball game altogether, admitted Stimac.

“Pace of ISL is far below the pace of international football. So, when players arrive in national team camps we focus on sharpness, compactness and keeping stability and shape.” Stimac also spoke about the importance of doing well from set pieces, for which the team has hired the services of former West Ham and Manchester City player Trevor Sinclair.

“We have to work on how to defend our goal and then look to find gap. I am not really thinking about ball possession against the big teams.

“Trevor Sinclair has been brought in to help the team in set pieces. First, we have to work on how to stop conceding goals from set pieces, and then look to score from set pieces.

“Trevor is a guy who has got great experience. He has worked in development programmes and we needed a guy like him to help us prepare in such a short time.” Stimac said “no extra motivation” is needed for players to perform to the best of their abilities in a tournament of this magnitude.

“No extra motivation is needed here as this is a very big tournament.

“We are upgrading our fitness level and analysing our opponents in a proper way… how to stop them and what their patterns are.. how to approach these games.” Stimac also said his goalkeepers must remain confident of coming out if the need arises.

“We are going to need our goalkeepers to be at their best and also work on their self confidence. They need to be brave.”

Pak Leader's Convoy Attacked In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Report

Pak Leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman's Convoy Attacked In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Report

He was travelling through DI Khan when his convoy came under attack near the toll plaza.

Dera Ismail Khan:

Pakistan’s political outfit, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s convoy, came under attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan, Geo News reported on Sunday.

The veteran politician’s convoy was fired upon from multiple sides at Yarik interchange, the party’s spokesperson, Mufti Abrar confirmed Geo News on Sunday.

JUI-F chief was travelling through DI Khan when his convoy came under attack near the toll plaza.

In response to a query regarding Fazl’s safety, he assured that the veteran politician was safe.

Speaking to Geo News, Fazl’s brother denied the attack on veteran politician. saying that the JUI-F chief was at home when the incident happened.

“Maulana’s car stopped for refuelling near the Yarik interchange [when the incident happened,” he added.

The alleged attack comes in the backdrop of repeated security concerns raised by Fazl who, on multiple occasions, has cast doubts over the staging of polls due to the “unstable” security situation in some parts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Geo News reported.

“There is no police in Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, and Lakki Marwat. Can the polls be staged in this situation of unrest?” The senior politician wondered while addressing a press conference in Islamabad on December 5.

Earlier this week, Fazl had warned that it would hold Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja responsible if the party’s workers came under attack during electioneering.

Fazl’s remarks came after the Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered the caretaker government to ensure timely elections, warning against any delay in the polls slated for February 8, 2024.

Condemning the attack on the JUI-F chief, party leader Hafiz Hamdullah termed the incident as a nefarious move to prevent the party from taking part in the electoral process.

“We have been saying how elections can be held in such [law and order] situation,” Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri said maintaining that the incident raises questions on the caretaker government’s ability to provide security.

Reacting to the incident, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif also condemned the attack on Fazl’s convoy and expressed relief over the politico’s safety.

Meanwhile, the secretary interior, taking notice of the incident, has sought report from the relevant officials on the matter.

It is pertinent to know that the party has suffered major losses due to being in the crosshairs of banned outfits over the years.

In September, senior JUI-F leader Hafiz Hamdullah was injured in a blast — that wounded 10 others — in Balochistan’s Mastung area.

Meanwhile, in July at least 40 JUI-F workers were killed in a suicide blast that targeted the party’s workers’ convention in Bajaur’s Khar.

Pakistan has witnessed an alarming surge in terror incidents in the outgoing year, reaching the highest level since 2014.

Geo News reported citing the data gathered by Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), KP has bore the brunt of these attacks, reporting 23 instances that resulted in 254 fatalities and 512 injuries.

The province, along with newly merged districts (NMD), experienced 13 suicide attacks, leading to 85 deaths and 206 injuries.

With such a worrying law and order situation, the Election Commission of Pakistan has sought the help of the Pakistan Army, due to a shortfall of 270,000 police personnel, to ensure the law and order situation during the upcoming general elections.

In its letter to the Ministry of Interior, the ECP called for the services of the Pakistan Army and civil armed forces (CAFs) to be “requisitioned in static mode”.

"Most Reliable": Ex-ISRO Chief On Satellite Launch To Study Black Holes

'Most Reliable': Ex-ISRO Chief On Satellite Launch To Study Black Holes

He also congratulated the ISRO for the achievement of the Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya L1 missions

Thiruvananthapuram:

Lauding the launch of the PSLV-C58/XPOSAT mission which is scheduled for Monday, former ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair on Sunday said that this rocket system has evolved as the most reliable and cost-effective one in the global scenario.

The mission is scheduled at 09:10 IST on Monday, the first day of the new calendar year 2024, at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

Talking to ANI, Madhavan Nair said, “The new year 2024 will be a significant one as far as ISRO programmes are concerned. The 60th launch of PSLV will take place on this day. When we look back in history, we started this journey in 1993 and since then, most of the missions have been successfully completed. This rocket system has evolved as the most reliable and cost-effective one in the global scenario.”

The former ISRO Chairman also congratulated the ISRO for the achievement of the Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya L1 missions.

“On this occasion, I congratulate ISRO for the fantastic achievements it has achieved in 2023, including the significant Chandrayaan-3 mission on the South Pole of the Moon, the Aditya L1 mission and the commercial launch competing against the Space X competition,” Mr Nair said.

XPoSat (X-ray Polarimeter Satellite) is the first dedicated scientific satellite from ISRO to carry out research in space-based polarisation measurements of X-ray emission from celestial sources.

The objectives of this to-be-launched mission are to measure the polarisation of X-rays in the energy band 8-30 keV emanating from about 50 potential cosmic sources through Thomson Scattering by the POLIX payload; to carry out long-term spectral and temporal studies of cosmic X-ray sources in the energy band 0.8-15keV by the XSPECT payload; and to carry out polarisation and spectroscopic measurements of X-ray emissions from cosmic sources by the POLIX and XSPECT payloads, respectively, in the common energy band.

The module houses 10 identified payloads, supplied by ISRO and IN-SPACe.

The scientific goals of the mission are to study the distribution of magnetic field, geometric anisotropies, alignment with respect to the line of sight, nature of accelerators in galactic cosmic X-Ray sources by measuring the degree of polarisation and its angle, structure and geometry of magnetic field of neutron stars, mechanism of X-Ray beaming and its relation with luminosity and mass of accretion rate of powered pulsars, and detailed understanding of galactic black hole binary sources, among others.

In a stellar display of prowess, India soared to new heights in 2023 with the successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the south pole of the moon and the launch of Aditya-L1, India’s first solar mission.

These milestones not only secured India’s standing in the global space economy but also fueled the engines for the private space sector in India.

Countdown2Ceasefire: Global campaign calls for immediate, permanent ceasefire in Gaza

A global grassroots campaign has been launched with the goal of turning the traditional New Year’s countdown into a countdown to immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, which has been under an Israeli genocidal war for more than two months now.

Countdown2Ceasefire, as the campaign has been named, started out in London two weeks ago by a group of young activists who came together through social media, but has rapidly spread to many countries around the world by Sunday.

As the death toll keeps mounting in Gaza as a result of Israel’s relentless attacks, campaigners aim to change the traditional New Year’s countdown into an influential and resounding countdown for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

To do this, local countdown events have been arranged across the world, from Southeast Asia to Latin America with Countdown2Ceasefire campaign planning to livestream the events across multiple social media platforms.

According to its organizers, the campaign has been embraced by over 40 countries to stop the brutal killing of civilians and save the lives of the Palestinian people in the besieged Gaza Strip, the occupied West Bank, and the rest of the 1948 occupied territories.

The campaign urges people across the globe to carry banners and ask for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza while joining the New Year’s Eve celebrations in their cities, and shout “CEASEFIRE NOW” as the countdown to the New Year takes place.

The participants in the campaign were also asked to livestream the countdown in their locations and share the campaign’s social media accounts in their network.

“New Year’s Eve is a moment of celebration worldwide, and an opportunity to create resolutions for a brighter future. …our only New Year’s resolution is to call for a permanent ceasefire,” Countdown2Ceasefire said in a statement earlier this week.

The Israeli regime launched its genocidal war on October 7 following an operation by Gaza’s resistance movements, dubbed Operation al-Aqsa Storm. Close to 22,000 people, most of them women and children, have been killed in the regime’s military campaign so far.

“A permanent ceasefire is the first step in ending the current deplorable situation and a tangible move towards a future where traumatized communities can rebuild and recover,” Bushra Mohammad, a campaign spokesperson, said on Saturday.

Countdown2Ceasefire also presses for an end to Israeli aggression in the West Bank as the occupied territory has been witnessing a rise in Israeli bloodletting since the onset of the regime’s war on the Gaza Strip.

Hindu Outfit's Big Warning On Racket To Loot Devotees In Ram Temple's Name

Hindu Outfit's Big Warning On Racket To Loot Devotees In Ram Temple's Name

Social media messages are asking people to donate for the temple’s construction

New Delhi:

As the grand consecration ceremony for Ram Temple in Ayodhya approaches, a shocking racket to loot the faithful in the temple’s name has come to light. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has warned how cyber criminals have put out social media messages, seeking donations in the name of the temple. These messages also have a QR code. Scan-and-pay and the money goes to the swindlers.

VHP spokesperson Vinod Bansal said the matter has been flagged to the Home Ministry and police chiefs in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. He stressed that Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra, the trust overseeing the construction of the temple, has not authorised anyone to collect funds.

In a video message, Mr Bansal said they have recently been informed about the “ugly” attempts to collect money in the temple’s name. “Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Nyas has not authorised anyone to collect funds. I have written to the Home Ministry, Uttar Pradesh DGP and Delhi’s Commissioner of Police, seeking strict action so that people do not fall prey to such frauds. People need to be careful too,” he said. “This is an occasion for joy, we are sending out invitations. We will not accept any donation,” he said.

The matter, it is learnt, came to light after social media messages and phone calls asked people to donate to the temple. One of the persons who received a call shared the number with VHP workers. A VHP worker called the number and the fraudsters’ tactics were on display.

The VHP has shared an audio clip of the recorded phone call, the authenticity of which cannot be verified by NDTV. In the call, the VHP worker poses as someone who wanted to donate to the temple. When the caller says he wants to donate Rs 11,000 and others in the village were also keen to make donations, the alleged fraudster on the other side asks for a WhatsApp number where he can send the QR code.

To convince the caller, the alleged fraudster says the names and contact details of donors were being noted down and that they would be invited to the Ram Temple once construction work was completed. At one point, the alleged fraudster says a “war has broken out between Hindu and Muslim societies” and that the “Muslims are not letting the temple construction proceed”. “So we are collecting donation to build the temple,” he is heard saying.

When the caller asks for his name, the alleged fraudster says he is based out of Ayodhya and there are several groups collecting money for the temple.
