Jyothi Yarrajis Bronze Upgraded To Silver At Asian Games 2023 - Heres Why

Jyothi Yarraji clinched silver in Women’s 100m Hurdles event at Asian Games 2023 to complete a momentous day for India at the competition which saw them winning 9 medals in athletics – 2 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze. However, the medal was not without its fair share of controversies as Yarraji was initially third in the race but her bronze was upgraded to silver after Chinese runner Wu Yanni was disqualified for a false start. Both Yarraji and Wu were under review after the false start but the organisers decided to disqualify just Wu as she was the first runner to rush in during the false start to the race.

At the start of the race, Wu was in Lane 4 with Yarraji in Lane 5. During the false start, Wu rushed in first followed by Yarraji resulting in a disqualification for both. The decision taken by the organisers left a lot of people confused as the first person to rush is disqualified and Yarraji was the second to run forward.

Both players approached the screen for a review and it was decided by the organisers to allow the athletes to compete in the race with a post-race review deciding their future.

China’s Lin Yuwei emerged the winner in the race with Wu finishing second and Yarraji coming third.

Yarraji finished with the timing of 12.91 secs while Lin clocked 12.74 secs.

However, around 30 minutes after the race finished, Wu was disqualified from the race and as a result, the bronze medal won by Yarraji was immediately upgraded to a silver medal.

"Destroyed 20 Targets": Turkey's Air Strikes In Iraq After Ankara Blast

'Destroyed 20 Targets': Turkey's Air Strikes In Northern Iraq After Ankara Blast

A suicide bomber detonated an explosive device in front of Interior Ministry building in Ankara

Ankara, Turkey:

Turkish jets launched air strikes inside Iraqi Kurdistan late Sunday, after a blast earlier the same day injured two police officers near the parliament building in Ankara.

In the hours following the bombing, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had already vowed that “terrorists” would never achieve their aims.

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), listed as a terror group by Turkey and its Western allies, claimed responsibility for the blast. It has waged a deadly insurgency against Ankara for four decades.

The district targeted in the bombing is home to several other ministries and the Turkish parliament, which reopened as planned in the afternoon with an address from Erdogan.

“The villains who threaten the peace and security of citizens have not achieved their objectives and will never achieve them,” Erdogan said.

The interior ministry said two attackers had arrived in a commercial vehicle around 9:30 am (0630 GMT) in front of “the entrance gate of the General Directorate of Security of our Ministry of the Interior, and carried out a bomb attack.”

“One of the terrorists blew himself up,” Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya told journalists outside the ministry. “The other was killed by a bullet to the head before he had a chance to blow himself up.”

Two police officers were lightly injured in the exchange of fire, but their lives were not in danger, he added.

The Ankara prosecutor’s office said it had opened an investigation and banned access to the area. Local media were asked to stop broadcasting images from the scene of the attack.

North Iraq strikes

In a statement to the ANF news agency, which is close to the Kurdish movement, the PKK said that “a sacrificial action was carried out against the Turkish Interior Ministry”.

On Sunday evening, an official in Iraqi Kurdistan reported that Turkish army planes bombing parts of the Bradost region and the village of Badran.

Turkey’s defence ministry acknowledged an “air operation” in northern Iraq to “neutralise the PKK”.

The ministry said that “20 targets used by terrorists” had been destroyed.

In his opening remarks, Erdogan also slammed the European Union for stalling his country’s membership bid, stating that Turkey “no longer expects anything from the European Union, which has kept us waiting at its door for 40 years”.

“We have kept all the promises we have made to the EU but they have kept almost none of theirs,” he said, adding that he would not “tolerate any new demands or conditions” for his country to join the bloc.

Sweden NATO bid

This session of Turkey’s parliament must also validate Sweden’s entry into the NATO alliance.

Hungary and Turkey in July lifted their vetoes against Sweden’s entry into the Atlantic alliance, but have been slow to ratify its membership.

Erdogan indicated in July that ratification by the Turkish parliament would not take place before October, but it is expected to be approved during this parliamentary year.

For months, Erdogan has been putting pressure on Sweden to take action against Koran desecrations that have strained relations between the two countries.

Sweden’s prime minister Ulf Kristersson was quick to pledge in a statement that his country “once again confirms its commitment to long-term cooperation with Turkey in the fight against terrorism”.

Numerous foreign leaders also voiced support for Turkey after the attack, with messages of support coming from Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States embassy in Ankara.

The Turkish capital has been the scene of several attacks, particularly during the years 2015 and 2016 — many claimed by the PKK or the Islamic State group.

The PKK has waged an insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984 in a conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

In October 2015 an attack in front of a central station in Ankara claimed by the Islamic State group killed 109 people.

The most recent bomb attack in Turkey was in a shopping street in Istanbul in November 2022, where six were killed and 81 were injured.

Australia Provides $5 Million To Afghanistan In Humanitarian Aid

Australia Provides $5 Million To Afghanistan In Humanitarian Aid

Afghanistan lost the support of West when the Taliban took over after US and NATO withdrawal in 2021

Kabul:

Amid the escalating challenges of poverty and unemployment in Afghanistan, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that Australia is providing $5 million in humanitarian aid, Khaama Press reported.

The agency stated in a press release on Sunday that Australia has contributed more than $5.1 million to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund.

Furthermore, OCHA, the coordinating body for humanitarian aid of the United Nations, has clarified that this amount will be used in the relief and livelihood sectors.

The organisation added that following the establishment of the Humanitarian Fund for Afghanistan, the Australian government sent approximately 69 million Australian dollars to the fund.

Previously, the UN OCHA stated in its latest report that an urgent budget of $570.7 million is required to provide essential winter necessities for people in need in Afghanistan, Khaama Press reported.

According to OCHA’s statistics, 29.2 million people in Afghanistan need humanitarian assistance, including 21.3 million people enrolled in relief programs.

Additionally, the organization has mentioned that USD 3.23 billion is required for humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan this year.

However, as of August, only approximately $1 billion has been provided, leaving a shortfall of $2.43 billion in the budget, Khaama Press reported.

Earlier, the World Food Programme (WFP) of the United Nations warned that Afghanistan is one of the 10 nations where approximately two million people are suffering from severe food insecurity, adding that at least 41 million people in Afghanistan face severe acute food insecurity at an alarming level.

Afghanistan, heavily dependent on Western donor support, lost this assistance when the Taliban took over after the US and NATO withdrawal in August 2021. This led to a rapid economic collapse, pushing self-sufficient Afghans to rely on humanitarian aid for survival.

"Pakistan Are Now Getting A Habit Of Losing": Ramiz Blasts Babar And Co

Mohammad Rizwan in action for Pakistan cricket team© AFP

Former Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja was extremely critical of the Pakistan cricket team after they went down fighting against New Zealand in the Cricket World Cup 2023 warm-up match. The Babar Azam-led side scored 345 with the help of a century from Mohammed Rizwan and a gritty 80 from the skipper. However, that was not enough as New Zealand were able to chase it down with 6.2 overs to spare. Raja said that Pakistan are getting a habit of losing and pointed out that if the bowlers fail to perform on the big stage, the team will have to score more than 400 runs.

“I know it was just a practice game, but a win is a win. And winning becomes a habit. But I feel Pakistan are now getting a habit of losing. First they lost in Asia Cup, and now here. Pakistan scored 345 and it was a great run-chase. If these are the pitches – and you will get such pitches in India – you will have to score 400 if your bowling keeps misfiring like this. You will have to change your tactics, take risks. And we don’t do that. We play defensively for first 10-15 overs and then shift gears,” he told reporters.

Rachin Ravindra and returning Kane Williamson played key knocks as New Zealand chased down 345 to thrash Pakistan by five wickets in a World Cup warm-up match on Friday.

Chasing 346 for victory, New Zealand lost an early wicket before Ravindra (97) and Williamson (54) put on 137 to put their team on course and they achieved the target with 6.2 overs to spare in Hyderabad.

Mohammed Rizwan hit 103 and Babar Azam made 80 in Pakistan’s 345-5 after electing to bat first but the Kiwi batsmen made the total look easy against an attack missing pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Williamson, who returned from a six-month lay-off due to his knee injury and played the match only as a batsman, looked impressive in his 50-ball stay before he retired out.

Mobile phones banned inside Tamil Nadu’s Palani temple

Dindigul: The Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment department has banned mobile phones inside the Arulmigu Palani Dhandayuthapani Swamy temple from Sunday.

The world-renowned Arulmigu Palani Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple is visited by devotees not only from Tamil Nadu but also from other states.

For a few days now, some people have been taking pictures of the Navabasanam moolavar idol, golden chariot, and golden tower in Palani Murugana temple during the festival season and spreading them on social media.

In this case, a public interest case was filed in the Madurai bench of Madras High Court to ban the carrying of mobile phones to the Arulmigu Palani Dhandayuthapani Swamy temple. The court heard the case and ordered the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department to ban the carrying of cell phones in the Arulmigu Palani Dhandayuthapani Swamy temple.

Editorial: Preventable tragedies

At present, cancer care and research is dominated by men who get to decide priorities and funding. There must be equitable access for women to cancer research resources, leadership, and funding

Editorial: Preventable tragedies

At present, cancer care and research is dominated by men who get to decide priorities and funding. There must be equitable access for women to cancer research resources, leadership, and funding

Cancer, the emperor of maladies, knows no gender bias. But, women end up suffering more compared to men. The reasons for higher cancer mortality rate among women are not far to seek: societal apathy towards their health, lack of awareness, absence of quality expertise at the primary care level and delayed access to cancer prevention, detection and care. The latest Lancet Commission report on gender inequality in cancer care, highlighting the disproportionately higher number of cases of deaths among women, must serve as a wake-up call for health authorities worldwide, particularly in India where nearly 69 lakh cancer deaths among women last year were preventable by reducing risk factors, periodic screening, and early diagnosis. The report, titled “Women, Power and Cancer”, examined how asymmetries of power in relation to cancer play out in terms of decision-making, knowledge and economics in 185 countries. The findings are disconcerting. Not only is cancer one of the top three leading causes of premature deaths among women worldwide, but women are less likely to find the care they need once diagnosed, due to a lack of knowledge and decision-making power. They are also more likely to experience financial catastrophe due to cancer. Even as the most common cancer among women around the world is breast cancer, very little is still understood about its causes and the occupational and environmental hazards that could lead to cancer in women are woefully under-researched. The official data in India shows that the top three cancers— breast, cervical, ovarian — have been the leading causes of death.

Women face multiple challenges in accessing timely and appropriate care in the absence of knowledge, decision-making and financial powers and availability of services at the primary level closer to home. On the part of the governments, the most important intervention is to create awareness among people, especially women, so that they come forward for screening and seek care. There is also a need for regularly collecting data on gender and social demographics for cancer health statistics and effectively enforcing laws and policies that reduce exposures to known cancer risks. At present, cancer care and research is dominated by men who get to decide priorities and funding. There must be equitable access for women to cancer research resources, leadership, and funding. The number of cancer patients in India is projected to increase to 29.8 million by 2025. These figures, apart from being depressing, come as a warning for health authorities and the general public as well. Even with improvements in treatment, both the incidence of cancer and mortality continue to rise in the country. There is an urgent need for improving curative, palliative and preventive measures and strengthening cancer care infrastructure. A robust health system programmes that help in early detection, controlling risk factors and effectively treating diseases in a cost-effective manner is the way forward.

"Architect" Of Modern US-India Ties: Biden Officials Laud S Jaishankar

'Architect' Of Modern US-India Ties: Biden Officials Laud S Jaishankar

S Jaishankar was on a visit to the US from September 22 to September 30 (File)

Washington:

Terming the India-US ties one of the most defining partnerships, several top Biden administration officials praised External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar’s commitment to this bond, calling him the “architect” of modern US-India relations.

These accolades came during a special reception hosted by India’s Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, in honour of EAM S Jaishankar.

The event was attended by notable figures from the Biden administration, including US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Verma, President Biden’s domestic policy advisor Neera Tanden, Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy Dr Rahul Gupta, and Director of the National Science Foundation Dr. Sethuraman Panchanathan.

Mr Jaishankar was on a visit to the US from September 22 to September 30 during which he addressed the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. In Washington, Mr Jaishankar met several top US officials including National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Ambassador Katherine Tai and US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin.

Veteran diplomat Richard Verma emphasised the role of hard-working Indian Americans who have built the US-India ties and said, “It’s one of the most consequential relationships of this century. Do we have disagreements? You bet. Will we have bumps in the road? Of course. But two close friends aligned with these shared values, bonded together by the great ideas of Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King…this is a partnership with staying power, with real impact, and that will continue to have an outside influence in the world.”

The former envoy also praised Mr Jaishankar as the architect behind the modern US-India relationship and exuded confidence that US-India strategic ties have enhanced under his watch.

“I have also known (Jaishankar) for a long time over many capacities, and who I can also say,  he is the architect of modern US-India relations. We would not be in the strong place that we are today, but for the external affairs minister, your leadership,” Mr Verma said in his public address.

At the “Colors of Friendship” event in Washington DC, Mr Jaishankar addressed members of the Indian community, underscoring the importance of people-to-people connections in building stronger bilateral ties.

Hundreds of community members from across the United States also participated in the event. Giving credit to the Indian Americans, Mr Jaishankar noted the importance of people-to-people connections in building stronger bilateral ties and that the Indian community was a “bridge between the two nations.

Biden’s top advisor, a prominent Indian American in the White House, Neera Tandon said that it’s important that India and the US have a strong person-to-person, community-to-community leader relationship based on the strength of the community and today the Indian Americans are throughout the administration at prominent positions.

“In fact, you can’t throw a stone in the White House and not hit an Indian American these days,” Neera Tandon told the community.

“Our community has honestly matured and recognized that we can participate and contribute in so many ways. And I think it is the strength of that relationship and the strength of the democratic participation that we are part of, that really builds on the US-India relationship. And it is an honour to be here with the foreign minister, Jaishankar, who’s a great leader across so many issues and has recognized for years the important strength of the community,” she said.

Talking about the Indian Ambassador to the US, Mr Sandhu, Neera Tandon said “He’s one of the strongest ambassadors India has ever had. He is a real and fierce advocate for the US-India relationship and more importantly, an advocate for the US-India partnership.”

Ahead of Gandhi Jayanti, Mr Jaishankar also paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi in the US. He and other guests made several remarks about the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.

Referring to the message of Satyagraha, Dr Rahul Gupta said, “Today we’re honouring the upcoming 104th birthday anniversary of what’s also known as the International Day of Non-violence of Gandhiji. What becomes important to me, as think about it, is to think about where in the United States, we have had few leaders who have embodied the work of Mahatma Gandhi. But I think there’s a lot more that people from the Indian community can do to spread the word. So it becomes important once again to reflect upon the core values of Mahatma Gandhi, truth, Satyagraha.”

US lawmakers Shri Thanedar and Rick McCormick, Democrat and Republican, were present at the event.
