Brazil President Lula back at official residence to recover from hip replacement surgery

Rio De Janeiro: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was discharged from the hospital on Sunday, two days after undergoing successful hip replacement surgery that will have him working from home while he recovers.

Lula, 77, underwent the operation on Friday. Doctors also performed minor eyelid surgery.

He has returned to the official presidential residence in the capital, Brasilia, and will work there during the coming weeks, Lula said in a statement on X. He previously said that he had suffered hip pains since August of last year.

“Thank you for all the prayers and the caring messages. I’m recovering to work even more for Brazil,” Lula wrote on X, adding — as a joke, presumably — that he intends to run a marathon.

A medical bulletin from Lula’s doctors earlier Sunday said that he had ascended and descended stairs with assistance.

Recovery from hip replacement surgery varies from patient to patient, but most can resume light, day-to-day activities within three to six weeks, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Many patients initially use a cane, crutches, or a walker until balance and strength improve to avoid falls that could jeopardize the surgery’s success, the orthopaedic organisation said.

North Korea denounces IAEA as 'paid trumpeter' for Washington

North Korea has vehemently denounced the United Nation’s nuclear watchdog for “cooking up” a resolution against Pyongyang’s nuclear program, saying it will never tolerate any acts of infringement upon its sovereignty.

The strongly-worded rebuke came after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted a resolution on Friday, urging North Korea to suspend its nuclear weapons program and heed the UN Security Council’s resolutions.

Reacting to the measure early Monday, a spokesman for Pyongyang’s Ministry of Nuclear Power Industry vowed, “As long as tyrannical nuclear weapons of the US and imperialist aggression forces exist on this land, the DPRK’s position as a nuclear-weapon state will remain unchanged and the DPRK will never tolerate the hostile forces’ acts of infringing upon its sovereignty.”

The unnamed spokesman was using the country’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Noting that the IAEA has no jurisdiction in North Korea because it left the organization in 1994, the spokesman described the resolution as a “result of

conspiracy” by the United States and its allies. He emphasized that North Korea’s status as a nuclear-weapon state has already become “irreversible.”

The spokesman also accused IAEA chief Rafael Mariano Grossi of “taking the lead in creating the atmosphere of pressurizing the DPRK” by “spreading a false story” about an imminent nuclear test.

“If the IAEA wants to avoid international criticism as a paid trumpeter of the US, it would be well advised to devote itself to tackling the difficulties facing the international community,” the spokesman said, referring to US nuclear proliferation and Japan’s discharge of wastewater from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant.

“Such farce of the hostile forces is a revelation of their sinister intention to cover up their criminal acts of seriously threatening the international nuclear nonproliferation system and justify their hostile policy toward the DPRK,” he added.

Kochi: Kerala Blasters FC recorded their second straight win of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2022-23 season as they beat visitors Jamshedpur FC by 1-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi tonight, thanks to a 74th-minute strike by their talismanic skipper Adrian Luna.

The Uruguayan attacking midfielder was the point of difference in a hotly contested encounter as he bagged his second goal of the campaign in this match.

An erratic Jamshedpur FC backline handed the Blasters their first real goal-scoring opportunity in the game. The Blasters’ midfield will be credited for that move too. As Jamshedpur FC struggled to clear the ball for once and for all, Jeakson Singh pressed high, recovered possession and played a short pass to Luna from several yards outside the box. The Uruguayan star had ample space to dribble closer to the goal and take a shot.

However, he opted for an unconventional approach, instead choosing to chip the ball over Jamshedpur goalkeeper Rehenesh TP’s head. Instead, the ball lobbed over the post.

Jamshedpur FC maintained a sustained period of offensive pressure for a brief period after that. One of those moves brought them within an inch of breaking the deadlock, courtesy of an impressive headed effort by Seiminlen Doungel.

Nikhil Baria found significant space on the right flank and used that to curl in a cross for Doungel that landed slightly wide off the post from his head. Daniel Chima Chukwu ran and kept the ball in play, trying to lay up a square pass for the young winger again but it was thwarted by the Blasters’ backline eventually.

Jamshedpur FC was determined to find the back of the net immediately after the halftime break.

Substitute Emil Benny received the ball on the right-hand side and sent in a probing delivery to Jeremy Manzorro on the left-sided channel of the 18-yard box. Manzorro tried to half-volley the ball into the net on his first touch but couldn’t give it the right direction as it ended up being way wide off the crossbar. 15 minutes later, Chukwu controlled a free-kick on the move and tried to get the ball past the Kerala Blasters FC goalkeeper Sachin Suresh, but to no avail.

Finally, it was Luna who landed the decisive blow thanks to a cohesive attacking effort by Daisuke Sakai, Dimitrios Diamantakos, and him. Sakai played a quick pass to Diamantakos inside the box, who backheeled the ball to Luna. The 31-year-old calmly placed the ball in the bottom left corner amidst a thunderous cheer from the home crowd for a goal that guaranteed them three points from this contest.

Brief Scores
Kerala Blasters FC 1 (Adrian Luna 74) 0 Jamshedpur FC.

Saudi Arabia condemns Quran burning in Sweden

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has strongly condemned the burning of a copy of the Islamic holy book of the Quran in the Swedish city of Malmo, a move which the kingdom says was carried out with “the knowledge of the local authorities”.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry on Sunday “reiterated the kingdom’s rejection of such flagrant acts,” and said such a move had inflamed the feelings of millions of Muslims worldwide, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the Saudi Press Agency.

The ministry called on the Swedish authorities to deal with Quran desecrations in a timely manner and stop giving permission to those who plan to take similar actions. Salwan Momika, an individual of Iraqi origin, tore pages of the Quran and burnt it in Malmo on Saturday.

The Swedish police detained some individuals and turned away some others who tried to stop the move, Swedish media reported.

Over the past months, copies of the Quran have been repeatedly desecrated by anti-Islam individuals or groups in countries including Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands, sparking outrage and criticism in Muslim-majority countries worldwide.
