US Model Found Dead Inside Fridge Had Cocaine, Alcohol In Blood: Autopsy

US Model Found Dead Inside Fridge Had Cocaine, Alcohol In Blood: Autopsy

No arrests have been made in the case so far.

The body of a Los Angeles model was found in her downtown apartment last month stuffed in a refrigerator, with her wrists and ankles tied and mouth gagged, according to the latest autopsy report obtained by the New York Post. 31-year-old Maleesa Mooney was found dead in her luxury apartment on September 12. The LA County Medical Examiner’s Office had ruled her death “homicidal violence” earlier this month, but the grizzly details of how her remains were discovered in her apartment were released on Friday in an autopsy report obtained by The Post.

According to the outlet, Ms Mooney had been beaten and bound before being stuffed into her own refrigerator. The autopsy also revealed blunt force trauma to parts of her body and her toxicology tests showed traces of cocaine and alcohol in her system.

“The blunt force traumatic injuries observed at autopsy are generally not considered acutely life-threatening on their own,” the medical examiner wrote in the autopsy report. “However, based on the circumstances of how Ms. Mooney was found, these injuries suggest she was likely involved in a violent physical altercation prior to her death. Given this, the role that drugs and/or alcohol may have played in Ms. Mooney’s death, if any, is uncertain,” the report added.

No arrests have been made in the case, PEOPLE reported.

The 31-year-old was found dead in her apartment last month after her mother called cops to perform a “welfare check” on the model. When officers entered the apartment, they found a pool of blood beneath her body, which was “wedged in the refrigerator,” the outlet reported.

Based on the blunt force injuries found all over her body and the condition she was found in, the officials deemed the manner of her death a homicide. There also is evidence that the model was strangled, the officials said.

Ms Mooney’s sister, Pauline, told PEOPLE that her sister was two months pregnant when she died and had always wanted to be a mom. “She was super excited and I know she really wanted a kid, and it’s something that she has always talked about,” she told the outlet. She also said her late sister’s boyfriend was “heartbroken” about the incident.

Meanwhile, Ms Mooney’s death spurred fear in local residents, especially after another model in the downtown LA area was found dead in her apartment. But despite similarities in the two cases, police have said that the two incidents are not related.

Nichole Coats’ family members feared their 32-year-old daughter also was murdered, but an autopsy report released on Tuesday showed she had died of an accidental overdose of cocaine and alcohol.

It’s a treat to be working with Kamal Haasan, says Mani Ratnam

Filmmaker Mani Ratnam said working with superstar Kamal Haasan is not only a great collaborative process but also a learning experience.

It’s a treat to be working with Kamal Haasan, says Mani Ratnam

Mumbai: Filmmaker Mani Ratnam on Saturday said working with superstar Kamal Haasan is not only a great collaborative process but also a learning experience.

Ratnam and Haasan are reuniting after 35 years for the Tamil star’s 234th feature film. They earlier worked together on the 1987 critical hit “Nayakan”. The ace filmmaker said it’s a delight to work with a good actor like Haasan as he elevates a performance.

“There are so many elements in the film (‘Nayakan’) that have been from him, like small gestures which made it look real. When you work with an actor who is really good, you realise that you have to do less. Sometimes you think you have to set it up and add energy but when I started working with him, I realised, I don’t have to do any of that. I just have to follow him.

“There’s enough drama that comes out of a good performance that you don’t have to try to add value,” Ratnam said at the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2023.
He added that the actor also has a positive effect on his co-stars.

“He has this amazing ability to get people around him to act well and he makes them do things that will enhance the performance. It is a treat to watch. He adds so many elements to the script, so it is a pleasure to act with a great actor,” Ratnam said.

On Friday, the “Ponniyin Selvan” director was honoured with the Excellence in Cinema Award for his outstanding contribution to the world of cinema. Haasan presented the honour to the filmmaker at the opening ceremony of the festival.

Ratnam’s filmography includes timeless socio-political dramas such as “Roja”, “Bombay”, “Iruvar”, “Dil Se…” and “Kannathil Muthamittal”, with the director often touching upon prevailing issues of the country.

When asked about the politics in his films, the 67-year-old filmmaker said he believes in staying true to the story.

“I have only one thought before I do something like that. Whether I’m being honest to myself and whether I believe in it or not, if this is the way I feel, then I express it. As long as you are real and as long as it is not a way to get a kind of film out, if you feel strongly about something you can go ahead and make it.” The director gave the example of his 1998 film “Dil Se”, which was set against the backdrop of insurgency in Assam.

He said his aim was to bring out the plight and anger of people through the film, which starred Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala in the lead.

“‘Dil Se’ was made during the time when India was celebrating 50 years of Independence, there was a sense of pride but there were still corners of India which were not as liberated as we are. The film was trying to say that we can be proud of what we have done but we have not done enough.

“For us to acknowledge that there’s hurt, anger and wounds, to me that was the culmination. He (Shah Rukh’s character) was an All India Radio reporter but he was the voice of every one of us. For him to realise that there’s hurt and damage that we are trying to ignore, we have blinkers to do it. That’s what the film wanted to say.” At the same time, Ratnam didn’t make “Dil Se” with the aim to preach anything to the people.

“I’m ok if they see it at surface level (as a tragic romantic film) because I believe that somewhere beyond it would have seeped in. I don’t want them to see it as a social (commentary), it was not meant to preach or underline. It was meant to be a part of somebody’s life that you go across and still be exposed to something, the problems that are there,” he added.

Hamas says prepared for 'immediate' prisoner swap, but Israel stalling

Palestinian resistance movement Hamas says it is prepared for an “immediate” exchange of prisoners with Israel, but the regime is stalling.

“We are ready to conduct an immediate prisoner exchange deal that includes the release of all Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails in exchange for all captives held by the Palestinian resistance,” the group’s leader Yahya Sinwar said in a statement on Saturday.

“I call on the organizations and institutions working in the field of [swapping] the prisoners to consider themselves in permanent session, and to prepare lists of the names of male and female prisoners held by the occupation without exception in preparation for developments in the next stage,” Sinwar added.

On October 7, Hamas and its fellow Gaza Strip-based resistance groups captured around 250 Israeli soldiers and settlers during Operation al-Aqsa Storm, their biggest operation against the occupying entity in years.

Following the operation, Abu Ubaida, the spokesman for the military wing of Hamas, al-Qassam Brigades, said 200 of the captives were being held by the brigades, while the rest were kept by other Palestinian resistance factions.

Recently, the brigades announced that around 50 of the captives have been killed in the war that the Israeli regime launched against Gaza following the operation.

Sinwar’s statement came shortly after Abu Ubaida said, “Contacts have taken place regarding the prisoners’ issue and there is an opportunity to reach an agreement.”

“The enemy is stalling,” he was quoted by the Palestinian Information Center as saying.

“The price to pay for the large number of enemy captives in our hands is to empty the [Israeli] prisons of all Palestinian prisoners,” he added.

“If the enemy wants to end the captives file at once, we are ready,” Abu Ubaida said, adding that the movement is also ready for any other path that the Israeli regime may take on the issue of its captives.

The Israeli war has so far killed over 7,700 Palestinians, including more than 3,000 children, with more than 20,500 wounded.

The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution on Friday, calling for the implementation of an immediate “humanitarian truce” in Gaza.

Israel has rejected all calls for a ceasefire, claiming it would benefit Hamas.

The vote at the General Assembly came after the United Nations Security Council failed four times in the past two weeks to take action due to the US’ recurrently casting its veto against relevant resolutions.

The assembly stressed the “importance of preventing further destabilization and escalation of violence in the region,” calling on “all parties to exercise maximum restraint and upon all those with influence on them to work toward this objective.”

Cash-for-query case: LS panel asks Mahua Moitra to appear on Nov 2, says no further extension will be granted

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha Ethics Committee on Saturday asked Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra to appear before it on November 2 instead of October 31 in the cash-for-query case, but asserted no further extension would be granted.

Moitra had on Friday wrote to the Ethics Committee, which is probing the allegations against her, expressing her inability to appear before it on October 31, saying she will be available only after November 5.

In its response, the LS Lok Sabha Ethics Committee extended the date of appearance by three days, asking her to depose before it on November 2.

The committee, however, said it will not entertain any request for further extension.

The panel is probing BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s allegations that Moitra accepted bribes and favours for asking questions in Lok Sabha at the behest of businessman Hiranandani. On Thursday, Dubey, and advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai gave “oral evidence” to the panel against the Trinamool Congress MP.

Moitra has said she should be given “a fair hearing and an adequate opportunity to defend myself against the false, malicious and defamatory accusations levelled against me by Shri Dubey and Shri Dehadrai”.

After drawing their opening match against Pakistan, the Uttam Singh-led India junior side was in its elements and took the lead in the 28th minute through Lalage, which was followed by goals from Amandeep (37th) and Rohit (54th) as the defending champions earned three full points. India had a confident start with forward Angad Bir Singh leading the charge and working in tandem with Aditya to set up goal-scoring chances.
However, an alert Malaysian goalkeeper Rafaizul Mohamad kept India from taking an early lead.

After a goalless first 10 minutes, Malaysia took the lead with a splendid goal from Suhaimi Irfan Shahmie in the 13th minute.

The first few minutes of the second quarter saw India create chances galore in the circle with Angad winning two back-to-back penalty corners.

However, India were not successful in converting them. India won three more penalty corners as the quarter progressed but the Malaysian defence kept the rivals at bay.

India finally scored the equaliser in the 28th minute when Lalage nudged in a blazing cross from Vishnukant Singh as the first half ended on equal terms.

Malaysia began the third quarter aggressively and were rewarded with a penalty corner. However, the Indian defence held firm and prevented the rivals from taking the lead again.

A minute later, India were quick to get a penalty corner thanks to Uttam and Gurjot’s front-row combination, but Amandeep missed the shot. In the 37th minute, Uttam’s fine circle skills earned India another PC, and this time Amandeep was on target, powering the flick past Malaysian goalie Rafaizul.

With a 2-1 lead, Uttam continued to exploit the wings, initiating a blazing run down the right wing, picking out Lalage in the centre of the circle, but the keeper was quick to rush out and swat the shot away.

The fourth quarter was dominated by India. Lalage attempted to extend India’s lead in the 50th minute with a shot, but Rafaizul saved it. As the quarter progressed, India’s attack continued, and they were rewarded when Gurjot Singh won a penalty corner with seven minutes remaining in the game, and Rohit stepped up to double India’s lead as they won the game 3-1.

India will take on New Zealand on Monday.

Israel Presses Ground Campaign Against Hamas In 'Second Stage' Of Gaza War

Gazans are short of food, water, fuel and medicines (Reuters)

Tel Aviv, Israel:

Israeli forces waged ground operations against Hamas in Gaza on Sunday in what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the second phase of a three-week-old war aimed at crushing the Palestinian group.

Gaza’s besieged residents faced a near-total communications and Internet blackout as Israel’s warplanes dropped bombs and its troops and armour pushed into the Hamas-ruled enclave, with Israeli military chiefs signalling they were gearing up for an expanded ground offensive.

Speaking at a press conference in Tel Aviv on Saturday, Netanyahu warned Israelis to expect a “long and hard” campaign but stopped short of calling the current incursions an invasion. Some of U.S. President Joe Biden’s aides have advised Israeli counterparts to hold off on an immediate all-out assault, U.S. officials have said.

Even as initial ground operations appeared limited for now, Netanyahu pledged to spare no effort to free the more than 200 hostages, including Americans and other foreigners, held by Hamas.

“This is the second stage of the war whose goals are clear – to destroy Hamas’ governing and military capabilities and to bring the hostages home,” Netanyahu told reporters.

“We are only at the start,” he said. “We will destroy the enemy above ground and below ground.”

Israel has tightened its blockade and bombarded Gaza for three weeks since the Islamist group Hamas’ devastating Oct. 7 attack. At least 1,400 Israelis were killed in the deadliest day of the nation’s 75-year history, Israeli authorities said.

Western countries have generally backed what they say is Israel’s right to self-defence. But there has been a mounting international outcry over the toll from the bombing and growing calls for a “humanitarian pause” to allow aid to reach Gaza civilians and ease the humanitarian crisis.

Medical authorities in the Gaza Strip, which has a population of 2.3 million people, say 7,650 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s campaign to obliterate the Iran-backed militants.

President Mahmoud Abbas, whose Palestinian Authority governs parts of the occupied West Bank while Hamas rules Gaza, said, “Our people in the Gaza Strip are facing a war of genocide and massacres committed by the Israeli occupation forces in full view of the entire world.”

With many buildings reduced to rubble and shelter hard to find, Gazans are short of food, water, fuel and medicines. Their plight got worse from Friday night when phone and internet services were cut – followed by heavy bombing through the night. The communications outage persisted into Sunday.

“God help anyone under the rubble,” said one Gaza journalist, who spent a terrifying night in a building stairway as bombs fell and Israeli forces appeared to exchange fire with Palestinian fighters.

Israel’s chief military spokesperson declined to say whether Israel was behind the telecommunications blackout in Gaza but said it would do what it needed to protect its forces.

Targeting Maze Of Hamas Tunnels

Israel sent troops and tanks into Gaza on Friday night, focusing on infrastructure including the extensive tunnel network built by Hamas, the Israeli military said. It provided no details on the size of the deployment.

Netanyahu on Saturday reiterated Israel’s call for Palestinian civilians to evacuate the northern Gaza Strip where Israel was focusing its attack on what it was were Hamas hideouts and other installations.

But Palestinians say nowhere is safe, with bombs also smashing homes in the south of the densely populated territory.

“A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding in front of our eyes,” U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said. The U.N. Security Council plans to meet on Monday on the Israel-Gaza crisis, diplomats said.

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk offered his SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network to support communications in Gaza for “internationally recognised aid organisations.” Israel responded that it would fight the move, saying Hamas would “use it for terrorist activities.”

Netanyahu, who met with hostages’ families on Saturday, said contacts to secure their release would continue even during a ground offensive and that military pressure on Hamas could help bring them home. He did not elaborate.

Qatar-mediated negotiations between Israel and Hamas continued but at a much slower pace than before Friday’s escalation in Gaza, a source briefed on the talks said.

Hamas’ armed wing said its fighters battled Israeli troops in northeastern and central Gaza. “Al-Qassam Brigades and all Palestinian resistance forces are fully prepared to confront the aggression with full force and thwart the incursions,” it said.

The United States and other Western countries had urged Israel to hold off on launching a major ground offensive for fear of high Palestinian casualties and a widening conflict, as well as to give more time for hostage negotiations. But U.S. officials said it was up to Israel to make its own decisions.

Amid fears that the Israel-Hamas war could spiral into a regional conflict, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant told reporters Israel had no interest in expanding the fighting beyond Gaza but is prepared on all fronts.

The crisis brought hundreds of thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators out in cities around Europe, the Middle East and Asia on Saturday.

"What Did You Do For Farmers?" U Thackeray On PM's Dig At Sharad Pawar

'What Did You Do For Farmers?' Uddhav Thackeray On PM's Dig At Sharad Pawar

Uddhav Thackeray alleged PM Modi “crushed” farmers and questioned his contribution towards their welfare

Mumbai:

Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks on Sharad Pawar, ex-Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday alleged PM Modi “crushed” farmers while questioning his contribution towards their welfare.

“What have you (PM Modi) done for farmers? So tell me what you are doing for the farmers and how you crushed the farmers. Just asking others what did he do?” the Shiv Sena (UBT) Chief said.

“Pawar will look at what he did for farmers. It’s between Pawar and the farmers, But what did you (PM Modi) do for the farmers?” asked Uddhav Thackeray.

“Why were the farmers in the north sitting on the road in the cold, wind and rain for a whole year? Why was the black law withdrawn after that?” he said, taking a dig at PM Modi.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s jibe, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar on Saturday said that the PM should give statements keeping his constitutional stature in mind.

“Prime Minister’s post is an important post. A PM should give a statement keeping his constitutional stature in mind. I don’t know why he targeted me. But I think whatever he said is because of the fact that he was not briefed rightly. Whatever statement PM had made on me, I will respond to that keeping the importance and dignity of PM post,” Sharad Pawar said while speaking at a press briefing in Mumbai.

Mr Pawar served as the agriculture minister when the Congress-led UPA government was in office at the Centre (2004-14).

In a veiled attack on Sharad Pawar, who was the Agriculture Minister in the UPA government, PM Modi had said that while the BJP-led government was actively empowering farmers, some individuals in Maharashtra were engaged in political activities under the guise of representing farmers.

Sharad Pawar also claimed that the fear of losing power might have pushed the PM to make such comments.

“He (PM Modi) was there to seek Darshan of Sai Baba in Shirdi, what was the need to take Darshan of Sharad Pawar there? If you see the nationwide picture, there are a lot of states where the BJP is not in power or their government has come after some sabotage in other parties. And wherever there is a BJP government, they are on weak foot. This weakness and fear of losing power may have forced him (PM) to make such statements,” Mr Pawar added.

Further, the NCP supremo explained the crisis situation he faced during his 10-year tenure as the agriculture minister under the Congress regime.

“I want to make my stand clear on the statements made by PM Modi in Shirdi about my tenure as Agriculture Minister. I was Agriculture Minister for 10 years from 2004 to 2014. I had a crisis on the very first day of my tenure as Agri minister,” Mr Pawar said.

He further said, “I had to sign a document for import of food grains for Public distribution system if that was not done on time our PDS distribution would have been stopped. Subsequently, I decided to increase the minimum support price (MSP) of various crops, MSPs of some crops were increased manifold.”

On the upcoming state assembly elections in various states, the NCP chief said that the situation is not in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“In assembly polls, I am seeing such a picture that BJP is not getting the desired support. I have not assessed for Lok Sabha polls yet. In the five assembly elections, I am seeing a picture against BJP. I can’t say that everywhere governments will change,” he said.

Mr Pawar further accused the central government of “being completely confused” on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

“Palestine and Ghaza issue is such an issue that I have not seen any confusion during our previous governments. Our government took a stand on the issue but after a few days, our foreign minister took a different stand. India’s policy has always been to support Palestine and the shift in India’s policy about the Palestine and Gaza issue now is something I have not seen till now. But this government is completely confused on this issue,” he said.
