'Friends' Actor Matthew Perry Dies, Body Found In Hot Tub: Report

'Friends' Actor Matthew Perry Dies, Body Found In Hot Tub: Report

Matthew Perry, one of the stars of smash hit TV sitcom “Friends,” has died aged 54

Los Angeles:

Matthew Perry, the troubled star of the smash hit TV sitcom “Friends,” was found dead at his home in Los Angeles on Saturday, US media reported. He was 54. First responders found Perry unconscious in a hot tub at his house and were unable to revive him, law enforcement sources told the Los Angeles Times.

“We responded at 4:10 pm… It is a death investigation for a male in his 50s,” a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman told AFP, without confirming the victim’s name.

A fire department spokesman confirmed it had responded to a “water emergency,” which could refer to a “pool, spa, bathtub or fountain,” but could not confirm reports that Perry had drowned.

Perry was best known for his portrayal of the wise-cracking Chandler Bing on the wildly popular “Friends,” which ran for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004.

“Friends” followed the lives of six New Yorkers navigating adult life, dating and careers. It was a mainstay of NBC’s much-vaunted 1990s and early 2000s television lineup, and drew a massive global following.

During the height of his success, Perry battled for years with addiction to painkillers and alcohol, and attended rehabilitation clinics on multiple occasions.

Perry experienced health problems including a burst colon in 2018 due to his drug usage, which required multiple surgeries and the use of a colostomy bag for months after.

In his memoir “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing,” published last year, Perry described going through detox dozens of times, and spending millions of dollars in repeated attempts to get sober.

Perry dedicated the book to “all of the sufferers out there,” and wrote in the prologue: “I should be dead.”

He wrote: “People would be surprised to know that I have mostly been sober since 2001. Save for about sixty or seventy little mishaps over the years.”

TMZ, which first reported the news Saturday, said that no drugs were found at the scene. The celebrity news outlet said Perry was found by his assistant, who called 911.

The LA Times and TMZ both said there were no signs of “foul play”, citing anonymous sources.

Reactions poured in from the Hollywood community on social media as news of Perry’s death spread.

“Oh no!!! Matthew Perry!! You sweet, troubled soul!!” wrote Mira Sorvino, who starred with Perry in the 1994 television movie “Parallel Lives.”

“May you find peace and happiness in Heaven, making everyone laugh with your singular wit!!!”

Josh Charles, who appeared with Perry on “The Good Wife,” wrote: “Awful news. RIP brother.”

Warner Bros. TV, which produced “Friends,” wrote: “We are devastated to learn of Matthew Perry’s passing. He was a true gift to us all.

“Our heart goes out to his family, loved ones and all of his fans.”

Perry was born in Massachusetts in 1969, and was raised between Montreal and Los Angeles after his parents separated.

His mother was a Canadian journalist who served as press secretary to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. His father was a US actor.

As a young teenager, Perry was a nationally ranked tennis star in Canada before moving permanently to California and pursuing acting.

In the 1980s, Perry had guest roles in popular shows such as “Charles in Charge” and “Growing Pains.”

He was the final, and youngest, lead actor to be cast for “Friends.”

Perry’s character — the group’s most sarcastic and quick-witted, but occasionally awkward and insecure, member — quickly became a fan favorite.

Perry and his co-stars — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer — negotiated $1 million each, per episode, by the end of their colossally popular and zeitgeist-setting 236-episode run.

In a sign of the show’s enduring appeal, the gang reportedly pocketed $2.5 million each for a reunion episode in 2021.

During that episode, Perry’s slurred speech prompted concern among fans.

Perry also surprised his costars by admitting to having suffered severe anxiety “every night” during the filming of the sitcom.

As well as “Friends,” Perry appeared in movies such as “Fools Rush In” and “The Whole Nine Yards.”

He was nominated for five Emmys, including two for guest appearances on “The West Wing,” but never won the prestigious television award.

Perry never married.

His representatives did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for comment.

New Delhi: The price of onions in the national capital on Saturday witnessed a huge increase to almost double the previous price affecting household budgets.

Onion traders are putting the blame for the sudden spike in onion prices on a shortage in supply.

According to the onion traders, the onions were priced at Rs 25-30 per kg before Navratri which have gone up to Rs 55-60 per kg in three days and these are being sold at Rs 65-70 per kg in the markets.

Currently, the retail prices in Delhi NCR stand at Rs 60 per kg from Rs 40 per kg a fortnight back due to delayed arrivals of harvest from key producing states like Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, as per an official of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.

“The inflow of the onion is low resulting in high rates. Today the rates are Rs 350 (per 5 Kg). Yesterday, it was Rs 300. It was Rs 200 before that. A week ago, rates were Rs 200, Rs 160 or Rs 250 etc. The rates have gone up in the last week. The rates have risen due to a shortage in supply,” an onion trader at Ghazipur vegetable market in Delhi said while speaking to ANI.

A customer at the market expressed concern about the soaring prices and said that earlier 1 kg of onion was available for Rs 20 now it is priced at Rs 50-60 per kg and added that if this continues it will affect the daily household expenses.

A vegetable vendor at Ghazipur market said that if the shortage of supply isn’t met then the prices will soon reach Rs 100 per kg.

“We are here to purchase onion. The onion rates were Rs. 50 before Navratri, now it is Rs. 70/kg. Our purchase is at Rs 70 per kg and we will sell it at Rs 80/kg. Earlier, it was Rs 30-40 per kg. If this continues, the rates will reach Rs 100/kg,” he said.

He further said, “The rates for onions have gone up the most. Rates for tomatoes have also gone up. Earlier, tomatoes were Rs 20/kg, now it is Rs 40-45 per kg. Tomatoes will also reach Rs. 70/kg if this continues.” Shamstabrej Raine, a wholesale rate seller of potatoes and onions, said that the rates of onions have increased since Navratri.

“Onion rates often increase after Navratri because 15 to 20 per cent of old onions are left and the new crop is late. The reason for the increase in onion rates is that today onion is being sold at Rs 50 to Rs 55 per kg in Nashik itself, so it is obvious that the freight from there will be Rs 5 per kg. We are selling onions at a wholesale rate of Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg. This onion will be sold at retail for Rs 70 a kg,” he said.

Ashok Kumar, a consumer said, “Earlier we used to buy whole sacks of onion to use in our homes, today onion has become so expensive that I am buying 5 kg onion in a plastic bag. I have come to Gorakhpur Mandi to buy onion, here onion is being sold at Rs 55 to Rs 60 per kg. Onions are available at Rs 70 per kg in retail shops outside.” The Ministry sources informed that it has procured over 5.07 lakh metric tonnes of onion and is all set to procure another 3 lakh metric tonnes in the days to come, which will help keep the price under control.

The government has disposed of over 1.74 lakh metric tonnes of onion in wholesale markets of Delhi, Haryana, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh, West Bengal, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Assam and Uttarakhand, the official said, adding that the prices of onion will start declining in coming days.

According to the official, the retail price matrix got disturbed due to the fall in the arrival of onions in Mandis. Still, the price of onion is much lower in comparison to 2021, when onion prices had crossed the Rs 100 mark, the official added.

'Shared Concerns': PM Modi, Egypt President Discuss Israel-Hamas War

India expressed grave concern over the worsening situation in Gaza.

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Saturday discussed the worsening security and humanitarian situation in West Asia. Both leaders expressed their concern over the increase in terrorism, violence, and civilian casualties in the area, largely owing to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

PM Modi and President el-Sisi agreed on the need to quickly restore peace and stability and to provide humanitarian assistance to those who have been affected by the conflict.

“Yesterday, spoke with President @AlsisiOfficial. Exchanged views on the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in West Asia. We share concerns regarding terrorism, violence, and loss of civilian lives. We agree on the need for early restoration of peace and stability and facilitating humanitarian assistance,” PM Modi wrote on X.

The two leaders also exchanged views on the latest developments in the “Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip”, a spokesperson for the Egyptian Presidency said.

“President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received a phone call from Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, in which views were exchanged between the two leaders on the latest developments in the Israeli military operations in the Gaza strip, and the danger of continuing the current escalation, whether due to its grave effects on the lives of civilians, or the threat it poses to security,” a Facebook post from the spokersperson read.

The October 7 attack by Hamas killed at least 1,400 people, mostly civilians, in Israel. In retaliation, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have killed more than 8,000 people, half of them children, the Hamas-controlled health ministry in the besieged Palestinian territory has said.

India on Friday abstained from a UN General Assembly resolution that called for an immediate humanitarian truce in the Israel-Hamas war, saying that the resolution does not mention Hamas and that the UN needs to send a clear message against terrorism.

“We hope that the deliberations of this assembly will send a clear message against terror and violence and expand prospects for diplomacy and dialogue while addressing the humanitarian crisis that confronts us,” said India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Yojna Patel.

India expressed grave concern over the worsening situation in Gaza and urged both sides to cease hostilities and pursue a peaceful resolution through dialogue.

PM Modi discusses terrorism concerns with Egyptian president amid Israel-Hamas conflict

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing aerial assault on Hamas in Gaza, combined with the launch of a ground operation by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on the counter-offensive post the terror attacks on October 7 and the continuing global efforts to rush humanitarian aid to war-ravaged Gazans.

Sharing details of his conversations with the Egyptian President on his social media handle, PM Modi said both leaders shared concerns over the scourge of terrorism and the loss of civilian lives amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

“Yesterday, spoke with President @AlsisiOfficial. Exchanged views on the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in West Asia. We share concerns regarding terrorism, violence, and loss of civilian lives. We agree on the need for early restoration of peace and stability and facilitating humanitarian assistance,” PM Modi posted from his official handle on X.

Earlier, on Sunday, the spokesman for the Egyptian President said in a Facebook post that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President al-Sisi exchanged views on the latest developments in the “Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip” and the danger of a further escalation of the conflict.

The spokesperson added that during the call, al-Sisi stressed Egypt’s continued efforts to coordinate regional and international efforts to push for a ceasefire.

“President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received a phone call from Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, in which views were exchanged between the two leaders on the latest developments in the Israeli military operations in the Gaza strip, and the danger of continuing the current escalation — its grave impact on the lives of civilians and the threat it poses to security,” read a translation of the spokesperson’s Facebook post.

He added that President ai-Sisi also cautioned against the potentially disastrous humanitarian and security effects of the ground assault on the Gaza Strip during his telephone conversation with PM Modi.

“President stressed Egypt’s continued efforts to coordinate regional and international efforts to push for a ceasefire, warning for dangerous repercussions, humanitarian and security, of the ground attack on the Gaza strip, and stressing the necessity of Unified International Action to find an immediate solution to the situation. The diplomatic level includes implementing an immediate humanitarian truce that preserves the lives of civilians and allows humanitarian aid to enter the Strip immediately and without interruption or obstruction, in line with the United Nations General Assembly’s resolution in this regard was issued yesterday evening, October 27,” the spokesperson said.

The two leaders also voiced satisfaction over the progress in bilateral relations and the strategic partnership between Egypt and India.
Over the weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, a total of 34 trucks transported much-needed supplies, including food, water, medications, and medical equipment from Egypt to Gaza via the Rafah crossing.

The convoy on Sunday was subjected to additional security inspections, a security official told CNN.

Despite these efforts, human rights organisations have expressed concerns over insufficient aid reaching the Palestinian enclave.
UN experts declared Israel’s actions in Gaza to be tantamount to crimes against humanity on Thursday, CNN reported, adding that with Israel’s border crossings closed to Gaza, the Rafah crossing connecting Egypt and Gaza remains the only viable route for delivering aid to the Palestinian enclave.

The humanitarian aid sent by India for the people of Palestine arrived in Egypt on Sunday last week, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Indian envoy to Egypt, Ajit Gupte, handed over the relief material to the Egyptian Red Crescent for onward transmission to Palestine.

“India’s humanitarian aid for the people of Palestine arrives in Egypt. Amb @indembcairo@AjitVGupte handed over the relief material to the Egyptian Red Crescent for onward transmission to Palestine,” the official spokesperson for the MEA, Arindam Bagchi, posted from his official handle on social media platform X.

Watch: Dhoni's Relationship Advice For Bachelors Leaves Audience In Splits

MS Dhoni is one of the greatest captains cricket has ever seen. He is the only skipper to win all the major white-ball International Cricket Council (ICC) tournaments. He led India to the inaugural T20 World Cup title in 2007 before helping the side win the 2011 Cricket World Cup. In 2013, Dhoni-led India won the Champions Trophy. Besides being one the best captains, the Ranchi-born is also a great wicketkeeper-batter. Dhoni’s tactical acumen has also impressed one and all. While everybody knows Dhoni as once in a generation cricketer, hardly has anyone found him talking about relationships. This is why the recent video of the player is really special.

During a recent interaction, Dhoni offered some relationship advice to the bachelors and his statement left everyone in splits.

“Bachelors, jinki girlfriend hai unka ek misconception hota hai jo ki main clear karna chahunga by ending this answer. Yeh mat sochna ki meri wali alag hai (Bachelors who have girlfriend have a misconception that I want to clear. Don’t think that your girlfriend is different),” said Dhoni as the audience could not control their laughter.

Watch it here:

During the interaction, Dhoni also revealed that he is doing well after the knee surgery he went through in early June this year. He added that the doctor told him that he would be feeling “much better” by the end of the year.

The news comes out as a big boost for the Dhoni fans, who are hopeful of the wicketkeeper-batter playing at least one more IPL season before bidding adieu to the game of cricket as a player.

The 42-year-old made his last appearance for India against New Zealand in the 2019 ICC World Cup semi-final in Manchester on July 10, 2019.

In IPL 2023, Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings to a record-equalling fifth title.

Hamas Demands Prisoner Exchange, Netanyahu Says War In Gaza Will Be Long

Netanyahu Says 'Existential Test' For Israel, Hamas Demands Prisoner Swap

Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have killed more than 8,000 people.

New Delhi:
Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that the war against Hamas in Gaza will be “long and difficult”, describing the situation as an “existential test” for Israel.

Here are 10 points on this big story:

  1. “This is the second stage of the war whose goals are clear: destroying the military and leadership capabilities of Hamas, and bringing the hostages back home,” Netanyahu said. “The war in the (Gaza) Strip will be long and difficult and we are prepared for it.”

  2. The United Nations said thousands more civilians could die in Gaza as Israeli ground forces continued to operate inside the Hamas-controlled territory after entering it on Friday. The UN has warned of “the possibly catastrophic consequences of large-scale ground operations in Gaza”, saying “thousands more civilians” could die.

  3. Israel’s military reported late Saturday that at least 230 hostages, including dozens of foreigners or dual nationals, have been taken to Gaza. This week, Hamas claimed that nearly 50 of the hostages were killed in Israeli airstrikes.

  4. Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar said the group is ready for an “immediate” prisoner swap with Israel. “We are ready to conduct an immediate prisoner exchange deal that includes the release of all Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails in exchange for all prisoners held by the Palestinian resistance,” Sinwar said in a statement.

  5. India abstained in the UN General Assembly on a resolution that called for an immediate humanitarian truce. The UN General Assembly passed te resolution titled “Protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations”, with 120 countries voting in favour, 14 against, and 45 abstaining.

  6. The Gaza Strip, blockaded by Israel and Egypt since 2007, has seen relentless Israeli airstrikes since the October 7 Hamas attacks. The intense airstrikes have allowed Israeli ground forces to step up operations in the region. “Since early Friday evening, combined combat forces of armour, combat engineers and infantry have been operating on the ground in the northern Gaza Strip,” the Israeli army said late Saturday.

  7. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, one of the leading supporters of Palestinian rights, has called Western powers “the main culprit” responsible for Israel’s “massacre” of Palestinians in Gaza. “Of course, every country has the right to defend itself. But where is the justice in this case? There is no justice — just a vicious massacre happening in Gaza,” he said.

  8. Erdogan’s strong remarks prompted Israel to recall its diplomatic staff from Turkey. “Given the grave statements coming from Turkey, I have ordered the return of diplomatic representatives there in order to conduct a reevaluation of the relations between Israel and Turkey,” Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said in a statement.

  9. Billionaire Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, pledged Starlink satellite internet access to internationally recognised aid organisations in Gaza, following a communication blackout yesterday. The blackout was affecting emergency calls and critical ambulance sorties, the Palestinian Red Crescent said.

  10. The October 7 attack by Hamas killed at least 1,400 people, mostly civilians. In retaliation, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have killed more than 8,000 people, half of them children, the Hamas-controlled health ministry in the besieged Palestinian territory has said.

As Israel escalates war on Gaza, Red Cross urges halt to 'intolerable' human suffering

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has demanded a halt to the “intolerable” human suffering in the besieged Gaza Strip, as the Israeli regime escalates its now 22-day-old bloody war of aggression against the coastal territory.

“This is a catastrophic failing that the world must not tolerate,” president of the ICRC, Mirjana Spoljaric, said on Saturday.

“I am shocked by the intolerable level of human suffering and urge the parties to the conflict to de-escalate now,” she said, adding, “The tragic loss of so many civilian lives is deplorable.”

The Israeli regime has been bombarding Gaza since October 7, when fighters from the Gaza Strip-based resistance groups launched a large-scale operation against the occupying entity in response to its intensified crimes against the Palestinian people.

The death toll in Gaza has since exceeded 8,000, including more than 3,000 children, with more than 20,500 wounded.

Despite the unconscionable toll, Tel Aviv has declared that the war has “entered a new phase.” The regime is, meanwhile, imposing a complete siege on Gaza, preventing the flow of water, gas, medicines, and electricity into the territory.

“It is unacceptable that civilians have no safe place to go in Gaza amid the massive bombardments, and with a military siege in place there is also no adequate humanitarian response currently possible,” Spoljaric said.

She was speaking hours after UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres sharply criticized the “unprecedented escalation” of bombardments on Gaza, calling for an “immediate” ceasefire.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk also warned on Saturday that there was the potential for thousands more civilians to die if Israel pressed ahead with a ground offensive in Gaza.

Tel Aviv has been threatening to launch a ground invasion against Gaza while rejecting all calls for a ceasefire, claiming it would benefit the resistance movement of Hamas.

The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution on Friday, calling for the implementation of an immediate “humanitarian truce” in Gaza.

The vote at the General Assembly came after the United Nations Security Council failed four times in the past two weeks to take action due to the US’ recurrently casting its veto against relevant resolutions.

The assembly stressed the “importance of preventing further destabilization and escalation of violence in the region,” calling on “all parties to exercise maximum restraint and upon all those with influence on them to work toward this objective.”

Pics Show Carvings Inside Ayodhya's Ram Temple Months Before Inauguration

PM Modi laid the foundation stone of the Ram Mandir in August 2020

New Delhi:

Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra on Saturday shared pictures of carvings inside the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, which is scheduled to be inaugurated in January 2024.

In the pictures shared by the trust on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, the artists can be seen sculpting on pillars inside the Ram Mandir.

As per reports, stones from Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district are being used in the construction of the Ram Mandir in Uttar Pradesh city.

Earlier this week, the Trust had also shared a video of the under-construction Ram Temple on X.

The 30-second video, which was captioned “Culmination of 500 years of struggle”, gave a sneak peek into the construction of the grand temple.

The small clip also showed the Sanctum Sanctorum, one of the golden doors, and the carvings on the pillars and walls of the temple.

PM Modi to attend Ram Temple inauguration ceremony

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that he will attend the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, which is set to take place on January 22 next year.

“Today is a day full of emotions. The officials of Shri Ram Janma Bhoomi Tirtha Kshetra today came to meet me at my residence. They invited me to come to Ayodhya on the occasion of the consecration of Shri Ram temple,” PM Modi said in a post in Hindi, along with a photo of the temple trust’s functionaries, on October 25.

“I feel very blessed. It is my good fortune that in my lifetime, I will witness this historic occasion,” he added.

Earlier, Shri Ram Janambhoomi Trust General Secretary Champat Rai had confirmed that the idol of Lord Ram will be installed at the temple on January 22 and that PM Modi has accepted their invitation.

The trust is reportedly planning to invite over 25,000 Hindu religious leaders from 136 Sanatana traditions for the consecration ceremony. About 10,000 “special guests” are also likely to be invited to the grand ceremony.

PM Modi laid the foundation stone of the Ram Mandir on August 5, 2020, after the Supreme Court — in a verdict in November 2019 — paved the way for the construction of the temple.

The Centre had then set up the Shri Ram Janma Bhoomi Tirtha Kshetra to oversee the construction and the management of the temple.

BJP making yet another laughable attempt to destabilise Karnataka govt: Congress

New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday accused the Karnataka BJP of attempting to destabilise its government in the southern state.

Sharing a media report which quoted first-time Congress MLA Ravikumar Gowda (Ganiga) as saying that a team of BJP leaders is approaching lawmakers with offers to defect, Congress general secretary organization, K C Venugopal, slammed the BJP in a post on X.

“A party without a leader or an agenda is resorting to their old habit of undoing the people’s mandate,” he said.

“Under the supervision of their masters in Delhi, Karnataka BJP is making yet another laughable attempt of destabilising our Karnataka government,” Venugopal alleged.

“But our INC MLAs are die hard loyalists and this government is receiving widespread praise for its speedy delivery of Guarantees. Maybe they should find a LOP and party president first?” Venugopal said.

Gowda on Friday alleged that a team which was behind the fall of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in 2019, was now working to lure Congress legislators with allurements like Rs 50 crore and a ministerial post, and four legislators have already been contacted.
He said there is evidence for it and it will be revealed soon.

Siddaramaiah was sworn in as chief minister on May 20 after the Congress registered a landslide victory, ousting the BJP from power.
