"Failure Of Government System": Sharad Pawar On Maharashtra Hospital Deaths

'Failure Of Government System': Sharad Pawar On Maharashtra Hospital Deaths

Sharad Pawar called for a serious response to ensure the safety of patients in the future.

Mumbai:

Slamming the Eknath Shinde government over the death of 24 people, including 12 newborns in 24 hours, National Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar asserted that the incident highlights the failure of government systems and called for a serious response to ensure the safety of patients in the future.

Sharad Pawar took to X and said “The unfortunate incident of death of 24 people including 12 newborns in 24 hours in a government hospital in Nanded is literally shocking.”

The incident was reported at Shankarao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital here due to the alleged scarcity of medicines.

Recalling a similar incident in which 18 people died in Kalwa Hospital of Thane Municipal Corporation, Mr Pawar said, “Just two months ago, there was an unfortunate incident where 18 people died in a single night in Kalwa Hospital of Thane Municipal Corporation. However, due to not taking this incident seriously, such a very serious incident was repeated in the government hospital in Nanded. This shows the failure of government systems.”

Mr Pawar noted that the government’s failure to address the seriousness of that incident led to a similar tragedy in Nanded’s government hospital.

Mr Pawar urged the state government to take immediate and concrete steps to prevent such incidents from recurring, emphasizing the need to save the lives of innocent patients.

“At least considering the seriousness of these unfortunate incidents, the state government needs to ensure that concrete steps are taken so that these incidents are not repeated and the lives of innocent patients are saved,” Sharad Pawar added.

Dr Shyamrao Wakode, in charge dean of the Medical College, said that the deceased were suffering from various ailments including snake bites, arsenic and phosphorus poisoning etc.

“Around 12 children died in the last 24 hours and 12 adults also died due to various ailments (snake bites, arsenic and phosphorus poisoning etc.). Due to transfers of various staff, there was some difficulty for us. We were supposed to buy medicines from the Haffkine Institute but that also didn’t happen. Also, patients come from far off to this hospital and there were many patients whose sanctioned budget also got disturbed,” Dr Shyamrao Wakode said.

Ex-CM and senior Congress leader from Nanded, Ashok Chavan, said that besides these deaths, another 70 patients, referred from other private hospitals in the district, are reported to be ‘critical’.

“Around 24 people’s death has been reported at the Dr Shankarrao Chavan Medical College and Hospital and therefore I have come here and met the Dean. The situation is concerning and serious. The government should take this up and provide immediate help…Around 70 other people are critical. Replacement of a lot of nurses who were transferred has not been given,” Mr Chavan said.

Mumbai: Police have arrested 12 members of a gang in Mumbai, including two women, which was involved in cheating people by using bogus documents to obtain credit cards and home loans from banks and financial institutions, an official said on Monday.

During the probe, it came to light that the members of the gang had fraudulently obtained at least 200 credit cards by using documents of various persons, who had approached them, he said.

Unit-3 of the Crime Branch arrested the accused persons from Bhandup, Mulund, Kurla and Wadala areas of Mumbai and recovered fraudulent I-T returns, TDS forms, electricity bills, stamps and seals of various companies, chartered accountant (CA) stamps, 10 swipe machines, 56 SIMs, PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, 14 mobile phones and Rs 60,000 in cash, he said.

According to one of the victims, who has lodged a police complaint, he was cheated by the gang members who had promised him to get a credit card and home loan and created fake documents in his name.

The accused persons took around Rs 4.50 lakh from the complainant to complete the process for obtaining the credit card and home loan, but did not deliver on their promise, said the official.

Based on his complaint, an FIR (first information report) was registered at the Agripada Police Station against the accused persons.

While investigating the case, the police unearthed the racket of cheating people by promising them credit cards and home loans.

The gang members had rented a shop and a flat, which was used as the residential address of the applicants seeking loans or credit cards, said the official.

With the help of documents, the accused persons used to obtain SIM cards which were then used as contact numbers of the applicants, he said.

The arrested women used to pose as employees of the persons seeking loans or credit cards and used to provide information to bank staffers during their verification visits, he said.

After delivery of credit cards at the given address, the accused persons used to swipe them on machines and make transactions in lakhs, said the official.

Three of the arrested persons, Pradeep Mourya, Bhavesh Shirsat and a 29-year-old woman, have cheating cases against them in police stations in Mumbai and adjoining Navi Mumbai, he said.

The accused persons were produced before a court, which sent them to police custody till Tuesday, said the official, adding further probe was underway.

Saudi al-Ittihad refuse to take field against Iran's Sepahan, referee calls off match

This photo, circulated through social media platforms, shows Saudi Arabia’s al-Ittihad football club players at the departure gate of Isfahan airport, on October 2, 2023, following their refusal to take the field against Iran’s Sepahan football club.

A football match between Iran’s Sepahan and Saudi Arabia’s al-Ittihad football teams, which was scheduled to take place in the central Iranian city of Isfahan, has been canceled after the Saudi squad refused to take the field over unspecified reasons.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League 2023/24 Group C match was slated to take place at the city’s Naghsh-e-Jahan Stadium on Monday. However, the game was called off by the referee when the Saudi squad refused to play.

Footage circulated across various media outlets and social media platforms showed al-Ittihad players at the departure gate of Isfahan airport, ready to go back to their country.

Sepahan Sport Club then issued a statement, saying they have prepared an official complaint, which will be filed with the AFC.

They added that the pitch had been inspected time and again by the AFC’s inspectors, the Iranian Football Federation and other relevant authorities, and had received their confirmation.

The AFC also issued a statement on the development, saying the match was canceled due to “unanticipated and unforeseen circumstances.”

“The AFC reiterates its commitment towards ensuring the safety and security of the players, match officials, spectators, and all stakeholders involved. This matter will now be referred to the relevant committees,” it added.

Sandeep 'Happy' To Bask In Roller-Skater Wife Aarathy's Asian Games Glory

Sandeep Warrier has seen better half Aarathy Kasturi Raj’s struggles over the years and as her biggest strength and pillar of support, couldn’t be more proud seeing the acclaimed roller skating ace win her first Asian Games medal, a team bronze in 3000m relay in Hangzhou. Warrier, a nippy fast medium bowler, who plays for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket, has played IPL and also luckily got to play a T20 International during the COVID-19 hit tour of Sri Lanka in 2021, where he had gone as a net bowler.

“I’m extremely proud of her. I’m really happy that she finally made it. I’ve seen her struggle in the last six-seven years but she has not given up and kept at it,” Warrier told PTI from Chennai.

The 29-year-old Aarathy, who took up roller-skating at a five, won her first Asian Games medal in second appearance. This was India’s first-ever medal in the speed- skating discipline.

Roller sports made its debut in the Asian Games in 2010 when Anup Kumar Yama bagged bronze in men’s single free skating event before combining with Avani Panchal to finish third in the pairs skating event.

Also a doctor by profession, Aarathy, who is now pursuing PG in clinical embryology, could have given up roller-skating after a disappointing seventh place finish at Asian Games 2018.

The uncertainty over the Asian Games that was delayed by a year because of the pandemic also had upset plans of many. And, Aarathy also endured a difficult time sustaining multiple cuts and bruises on her head in the sport which is very prone to injuries.

But she kept at it in pursuit of an Asian Games medal.

“I know the effort she has put in the last couple of years. I’ve seen it in in front of my own eyes, how she was dedicated and kept the whole focus was on this medal. I don’t remember when she last took a break in two-three years’,” Sandeep added.

“I’ve not seen her complain about anything. After the Games is delayed, most lose focus and intensity. But I’ve not seen that happen with her. There has been no drop in intensity and she would train for more than seven hours everyday “She was behind this Asian Games all this while. I was thinking she would win in the individual as well for the effort she has put in the last two years,” he said.

On Saturday, Aarathy finished fifth in the women’s speed skating 10000m point-elimination race which was an improvement of two places on her last Asian Games effort in 2018.

Daughter of a Chennai-based businessman father C Kasturi Raj and gynaecologist mother Mala Raj, Aarathy took to skating at the age of seven as her parents were keen that she takes up some form of sport.

“It just happened for her. Her parents were adamant that she should join some sport and she tried out swimming, badminton and tennis but skating was something that clicked for her. I guess the speed of skating just thrills her,” said the pacer.

But the medium-pacer said if the “love for speed” was not the common connect and it clicked for them instantly after they first met during a function in 2016.

Their story is that of a “skater-got-bowled’ — the name of their Instagram page — after they “clicked” instantly when Warrier, a Ranji Trophy cricketer then, went for an event in a college in Chennai.

“I met her in 2016 when I was there for an event in her college. She was the sports head of that college. That’s how I met her,” Warrier who got married to Aarathy in 2019, fondly recollects.

“It just happened for us. I was just lucky enough to meet her that day. The time we spent together then just clicked for us,” Warrier, who made his IPL debut in 2019 season for KKR, added.

“She’s very hardworking. It was quite hectic for her but she had the passion. She will train in morning, go to her college and then again go for training. Skating has been pure passion for her. She loves to skate which has kept her going I would say,” he said.

“I know what she has gone through in the last few years. More than struggle, I would say the dedication she has put in past one and half years made it for her.” “We don’t talk about each other’s sports. Basically we talk a lot about training and our diets, but not about each other’s sport.” Even for couples who pursue professional sports, it becomes important to give each other space as and when needed.

“We give each other space. She likes to be in her own space with her skating and I also like to be in my own space in cricket. She started following cricket recently, but not very much into cricket. But I follow her races a lot and accompany her to all National events,” he added.

The Kerala cricketer, who is now employed with India Cements, has also moved his base to Chennai and joined Tamil Nadu four seasons ago.

Israel's new aggression injures 2 soldiers in eastern Syria

This file photo shows the immediate aftermath of an Israeli missile attack against Syria’s capital city of Damascus.

Israeli aircraft have carried out another act of aggression against Syria, this time targeting positions near the eastern city of Dayr al-Zawr.

A Syrian military source was quoted by the country’s official SANA news agency as saying that the late Monday attack was aimed at military positions positions in the vicinity of Dayr al-Zawr.

The source added that the attack left at least two Syrian soldiers injured while causing some material damage.

Israel has frequently attacked the positions of Syria’s military and its allies during past years. The regime’s acts of aggression have increased since 2011, when the Arab country found itself in the grip of rampant foreign-backed violence and terrorism.

The regime’s raids mostly target the positions of Syria’s allies that have been aiding the country in its battle against foreign-sponsored terror groups.

Damascus has repeatedly complained to the United Nations over the Israeli assaults, urging the Security Council to take action against Tel Aviv’s crimes. Its demands, however, have fallen on deaf ears.

In its latest letter to the world body in late August, Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said Israel’s attacks constitute a deliberate and repeated violation of the sovereignty of a member state of the United Nations and pose a direct threat to the regional and international peace and security.

It said the attacks prove that Israel is determined to follow a serious and aggressive policy of escalation against Syria based on sabotaging infrastructure, and endangering the lives of civilians.

Syria and the Israeli regime are technically at war due to the latter’s 1967-to-present occupation of Syria’s Golan Heights. Israel maintains a significant military presence in the territory, which it uses as a launching pad for attacks against Syrian soil.

UN Approves Sending Foreign Forces To Stabilize Haiti

UN Approves Sending Foreign Forces To Stabilize Haiti

Haiti Crisis: The mission is initially approved for one year, with a review after nine months.

United Nations:

The United Nations Security Council on Monday approved a Kenyan-led mission aiming to bring stability to Haiti, a year after leaders in the violence-ravaged Caribbean nation first pleaded for help.

The Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation has been in freefall, with armed gangs taking over parts of the country and unleashing brutal violence, and the economy and public health system also in tatters.

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres have been calling since late 2022 for international support to back the fledgling police force, but much of the global community had been jaded by the failure of earlier interventions in Haiti.

Monday’s resolution passed with 13 votes in favor, with China and Russia abstaining. It was hailed by Haitian foreign minister Jean Victor Geneus as bringing a “glimmer of hope for people who have been suffering the consequences of a difficult political, socio-economic, security and humanitarian situation for too long.”

A breakthrough in plans for the force came in July, when Kenya volunteered to lead the force and send 1,000 personnel.

The resolution calls for the deployment of a “multinational security support mission” — not officially a UN force — with a “lead country” coordinating with the Haitian government.

The mission is initially approved for one year, with a review after nine months.

The force aims to provide “operational support to the Haitian National Police, including building its capacity through the planning and conduct of joint security support operations,” the resolution says.

The mission will also aim to create conditions to hold elections, which have not taken place in Haiti since 2016.

Guterres in a recent report said that the security situation in Haiti has only grown worse, with the gang members both more numerous and better armed than the police.

Nearly 2,800 homicides were recorded in Haiti between October 2022 and June 2023, with 80 minors among the dead, the UN report said.

– Addressing concerns of China –

The United States has been advocating a multinational force. On Monday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said his department would continue working with Congress to provide $100 million in foreign assistance, and that the Pentagon is prepared to provide up to $100 million in enabling support.

But President Joe Biden has made clear he will not put American troops in harm’s way.

On Monday, the White House voiced its “gratitude” to Kenya for taking on leadership of the force, and to nations such as Jamaica, the Bahamas and Antigua for adding manpower.

“It is now crucial that we focus on making progress in mobilizing the international support necessary to deploy this mission,” US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said in a statement.

For the resolution to pass, China had to choose not to apply its veto. Haiti is one of a dwindling number of nations that recognizes Taiwan, which Beijing claims and has been seeking to isolate on the international stage.

China, in the run-up to the Security Council meeting, voiced doubts and pointed a finger at the United States, highlighting the role of weapons from Florida in aggravating the violence.

Under pressure from Beijing, the resolution expands an embargo on light weapons and ammunition.

Beijing’s UN envoy Zhang Jun made it clear that China was still skeptical, stating Monday that “without a legitimate, effective and accountable government in place, any external support can hardly have any lasting effects.”

The resolution does not specify the size of the mission, although discussions have revolved around a force of about 2,000 personnel.

The resolution also calls for the support mission to “adopt appropriate wastewater management.”

A UN peacekeeping force in Haiti that lasted from 2004 to 2017 introduced cholera to the country, setting off an epidemic that killed more than 10,000 people.

The experience fueled even greater pessimism in Haiti on interventions and contributed to resistance against another force under the UN flag.

Muslims around world observe Prophet, Imam Sadiq birth anniv.

Every year, Muslims around the world celebrate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah sent to confirm the essential teachings of monotheism.

Born on the 17th day of the Islamic month of Rabi’ al-Awwal, Prophet Muhammad’s day of birth is an opportunity for many people to praise his good manners and his sacred mission, and get to commemorate his existence.

Muhammad was the son of Abdullah, who was the son of Abdul-Muttalib, who was the son of Hashim – whose ancestry reached the Prophet Ismael son of the Prophet Abraham, peace be upon them. The Prophet Muhammad was born in the city of Mecca, in Arabia, on a Friday, the 17th day of the lunar month of Rabi-I, in the year 570 CE into a noble family whose fathers and ancestors were amongst the chiefs of the Quraysh tribe, and the Bani-Hashim clan.

Muhammad grew up to become a fine young man. He became known for his excellent manners, and because of the honesty in his conduct and dealings, he was referred to as al-Amin (The Trustworthy One).

According to the Twelver Shias, the mission of the Prophet (PBUH) began on the Rajab 27/ June 25, 610. In the years prior to his mission, Muhammad (PBUH) spent a lot of time in solitude, worshiping God. He would spend a month in solitude in a cave called Hira’, in the mountains, and would worship God there. At the age of 40, Muhammad (PBUH) was visited by the angel Gabriel while on retreat in the cave. The angel recited to him the first revelations of the Quran and informed him that he was God’s prophet.

Because of the efforts of the Prophet (s), the pre-Islamic Age of Ignorance ended, and the polytheistic society of Arabia was transformed into a monotheistic society in a short time. Towards the end of the Prophet’s life, almost everyone in the Arabian Peninsula had converted to Islam. The number of Muslims has continued to grow ever since, and Islam is now the fastest-growing religion globally.

The Prophet (s) enjoined his followers to adhere to the teachings of the Qur’an and the Ahl al-Bayt (a). He designated Imam ‘Ali (a) as his successor on various occasions throughout his life, including the event of Ghadir.

The holy Imams are regarded as the Prophet’s legitimate successors not because they are related to him, but because they possess the attributes essential for religious-political leadership.

Each year, on the day of the Prophet’s birth anniversary, Muslims from around the world will gather to celebrate and commemorate the great occasion. According to narratives of the Sunni Muslims, the Prophet’s birthday is on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal. This year, Palestinians in Hebron city in the southern part of the occupied West Bank on Thursday celebrated the birth anniversary of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad amid heavy restrictions.

A religious ceremony was organized by the Islamic Waqf department in the Ibrahimi Mosque and included sermons and religious songs celebrating the event.

Hebron’s Old City also was decorated with balloons, light ropes, and banners marking Prophet Muhammad’s birthday.

Muslims in Egypt also observed Mawlid al-Nabawi, the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) last week. Muslims of all ages flocked to the mosques to pray, read the Quran, and recite poems dedicated to the Prophet. Concerts, exhibitions, and religious programs were also organized there.

In Iran, just as in other Muslim countries, the occasion every year is marked gloriously with the participation of massive crowds of people. In Iran, an event will be held between the days of the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal and the 17th of the Lunar Month, known as the Islamic Unity Week. Marked first time in Iran in the mid-1980s and based on the decree of the late Imam Khomeini, Muslims around the world observe Islamic Unity Week between these dates.

The 17th of Rabi’ al-Awwal is also celebrated with the birth anniversary of another important personality in Islam, the reviver of the teachings and Sunnah of the Prophet, the 6th Imam of Shia Muslims, Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (AS).

The sun of the existence of Imam Jafar al-Sadiq arose in the 83rd year of Hijrah, in the city of Madina. Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (AS) has the same birth date as that of our Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Muslims around world observe Prophet, Imam Sadiq birth anniv.

Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (AS) has three titles; As-Sadiq, Al-Fadil, and At-Tahir.

His father Imam Muhammad Baqir (AS) was very happy and pleased by the birth of his son. His mother Umm-e-Farwah was the granddaughter of Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr, who was one of the companions of Imam Ali (AS).

In order to train his students, Imam al-Sadiq (AS) made the most out of the time when there was no dictatorship and cruelty because the Abbasids and the Umayyads were in political conflict with one another over power.

In doing so, Imam al-Sadiq (AS) followed in his father’s footsteps. The school established by Imam Baqir (AS) was expanded by Imam al-Sadiq (AS).  Imam al-Sadiq’s students were not limited to Shias; rather, Sunnis also benefited from his knowledge. Many well-known Sunni leaders were directly or indirectly the Imam’s students.

The turbulent lifetime of Imam al-Sadiq (AS) began in 83 A.H. and ended in 148 A.H. He spent 31 years of his life in the presence of his holy father.
