Two army personnel were injured in a gunfight with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district

Rajouri/Jammu: Two army personnel were injured in a gunfight with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, officials said on Tuesday.

The encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists on Monday evening following a cordon and search operation in a forest area of the district, they said.

A joint team of the army and Jammu and Kashmir Police had cordoned off the Broh and Soom forest belts in the Kalakote area on Monday following information about suspicious movement, they said.

The terrorists fired at the troops in an attempt to break the cordon resulting in retaliatory fire, officials said.

In the gun battle, two army personnel were injured, a senior police officer told PTI. He said that they have been hospitalised and their condition is stable.

Two terrorists are believed to be inside the cordoned area, they said, adding reinforcements have been rushed to plug all possible escape routes, they said.

A defence spokesperson said the joint operation was launched in the general area in Kalakote and technology is being used to monitor the terrorists.

Presently, an intense operation is underway, he added.

Mexican president slams US military aid for Ukraine as ‘irrational, damaging’

Mexico’s president has denounced the United States’ multibillion-dollar military aid for Ukraine as irrational, saying Washington must allocate those resources to help ease the migrant crisis facing Latin American countries.

“…how much have they destined for the Ukraine war? 30 to 50 billion dollars for the war. Which is the most irrational thing you can have. And damaging,” Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said during his daily press conference on Monday.

He then pointed to a recent measure by US Congress, which decided to freeze further aid for Ukraine’s war against Russia after wrangling on a stopgap funding bill that was aimed at temporarily averting a US government shutdown.

“I was just looking at how now they’re not authorizing aid for the war in Ukraine…. So, they do have to modify their strategy and learn respect,” he added.

The Mexican head of state has, on several occasions, called on Washington to devote more funds to helping economic development in Central America and the Caribbean, and also assist those countries in their efforts to curb the flow of migrants towards the United States.

Since the beginning of the Ukraine war in last November, Lopez Obrador has sought to keep Mexico neutral, while supporting peace talks to end the conflict and criticizing Western military aid for Kiev.

Russia has said time and again that the generous military aid extended to Ukraine by the US and its Western allies only serves to prolong the war and add to the suffering of Ukrainian people.

Moscow has also asserted that by helping out Ukraine against Russia, the West is waging a “proxy war” against Russian forces.

Speaking last month, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said through their support for Ukraine, Western countries were directly fighting against Moscow.

“You can call it anything you want, but they are fighting with us, they are straight-up fighting with us,” Lavrov said, adding, “We call it a hybrid war, but that doesn’t change things,” the top diplomat said.

He emphasized that Western countries are “de facto fighting against us, using the hands and bodies of Ukrainians.”

"When I Was Net Bowler For Indian Team…": Rauf On Early Duels With Kohli

Virat Kohli and Haris Rauf© Twitter

Whenever the names of Virat Kohli and Haris Rauf are taken in the same sentence, fans get the flashbacks of the 2022 T20 World Cup. Kohli’s twin sixes to Rauf in the penultimate over the match helped India win a historic contest that saw Kohli perform at his absolute best. But when it comes to Kohli vs Rauf duels, the Pakistani pacer has a few early memories from the time he became a net bowler for the Indian team. Ahead of the start of the Cricket World Cup, Rauf took a trip down the memory lane as he recalled his early duels with Kohli which took place in the nets.

There haven’t been many Kohli vs Rauf battles in international cricket since the two nations only play against each other in multi-team tournaments. While the previous battle was won by Kohli, Rauf would be eager to come out on top as the two teams square-off in the upcoming World Cup.

Speaking of the talismanic Indian batter, however, Rauf has nothing but praise for the talent he has.

“When I was a net bowler for the Indian team and was bowling to Virat Kohli, I felt like he knew exactly where the ball was going to hit his bat. He was very focussed and that showed how sharp his concentration was,” Rauf said in ESPNcricinfo’s documentary The Incredible rise of Haris Rauf.

“Even during practice sessions in the nets, it felt like I was playing a match against him, despite being a net bowler. His remarkable control and intensity made me realise why he has such a reputation in the game.

Rauf also spoke about his admiration for South African pace legend Dale Steyn.

“I used to watch Dale Steyn and I liked the way he used to show aggression on the field after picking up a wicket. He inspired me to be aggressive on the field. That’s why he is my idol,” Rauf further said.

Mysore, Malabar Slender Lorises separate species: CCMB

Mysore, Malabar Slender Lorises separate species: CCMB

Hyderabad: For the first time in the country, researchers from the Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) have sequenced the entire genome of lesser-known but critically endangered species of Mysore Slender Loris and Malabar Slender Loris. In the process, they have concluded that both, due to their genetically diverse nature, must be treated as separate species from the Grey Slender Loris.

The study conducted by senior CCMB researcher Dr Govindhaswamy Umapathy’s lab was published in the peer-reviewed journal, The Journal of Threatened Taxa (September 2023).

In the study, Umapathy’s lab found that the Mysore Slender Loris and Malabar Slender Loris, which are currently considered as sub-species of the Grey Slender Loris, differ by about 2 per cent genetically and diverged from each other about 1.09 million years ago. Senior geneticists from the CCMB have said treating both the lorises as distinct species is very important for conservation measures of the critically threatened genus of animals.

Recently, recognising the need to protect the species, the Centre notified exclusive conservation reserves for the threatened Slender Loris. “Slender lorises are a threatened genus of small and nocturnal primates confined to India and Sri Lanka. The Grey Slender Loris is divided into several subspecies based on morphological variation and geographical distribution but not supported by molecular data,” the CCMB researchers said, adding that the study was an attempt to investigate the phylogenetic (evolutionary development and diversification) of the two sub-species from the Grey Slender Loris in South India.

Phylogenetic analysis has clearly shown that the Mysore and Malabar Slender Lorises form distinct monophyletic clades that diverged about 1.049 million years ago, shortly after the divergence of the Red Slender Loris Loris Tardigradus.

“As a result of the genetic variation, evolutionary divergence, already established morphological differences and geographically distinct habits, we propose to recognise the Mysore and Malabar Slender Lorises as two distinct species,” the researchers led by Umapathy said.

Iraqi-Born Taxi Bomber Angry Over Asylum Rejection, Say UK Police

Iraqi-Born Taxi Bomber Angry Over Asylum Rejection, Say UK Police

The explosion, which took place outside a Liverpool hospital in 2021, was declared a terrorist attack.

London:

An Iraqi-born man who detonated a bomb outside a UK hospital two years ago held a grievance against the British state for rejecting his asylum claim, police said Monday.

Emad Al Swealmeen, 32, was killed when he set off the homemade device in a taxi outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital in northwest England in November 2021.

No one else died in the botched attack, with the taxi driver managing to escape with minor injuries.

The explosion occurred shortly before events to honour military war dead on Remembrance Sunday and was quickly declared a terrorist incident by police.

A police investigation has concluded that there was no evidence that Swealmeen held extremist views.

“It seems most likely that Al Swealmeen’s grievance against the British state for failing to accept his asylum claim compounded his mental ill health which in turn fed that grievance and ultimately a combination of those factors led him to undertake the attack,” the police report said.

Detective Superintendent Andy Meeks, of the counter-terrorism unit for England’s northwest, said it was believed Swealmeen planned to detonate his bomb in the hospital, but that it likely exploded earlier than planned.

The explosion came a month after a British MP was stabbed to death as he met constituents in southeast England.

The two attacks prompted the government to raise the terror threat level from “substantial” to “severe” — the second-highest — meaning an attack was “highly likely”.

Swealmeen had previous convictions and had falsely claimed asylum as a Syrian refugee in the UK after arriving legally on a Jordanian passport.

His asylum claims had been refused and counter-terrorism police have suggested that Swealmeen may have converted to Christianity in the hope of strengthening his case to stay.

Break ‘silence’ on deaths in Maharashtra hospital: Congress asks PM Modi

Break ‘silence’ on deaths in Maharashtra hospital: Congress asks PM Modi

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday hit out at the government over 24 deaths in as many hours in a government hospital in Mahrashtra’s Nanded and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his “silence” on the incident.

Senior party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra demanded strict action against those responsible and compensation for the affected families.

Twenty-four deaths, including that of 12 infants, have been reported in the last 24 hours in a government hospital in Nanded, a top Maharashtra health official said on earlier in the day.

A three-member expert committee has been set up to probe the incident, the official said.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh asked Modi to break his “silence” on the incident.

In a post in Hindi on X, Priyanka Gandhi said she received the “sad news” of death of 24 patients, including 12 infants, due to the shortage of medicines from Maharashtra.

“May God grant peace to the departed souls. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families,” she said.

“Strict action should be taken against those responsible and compensation should be given to the affected families,” she added.

In a post on X, the Congress said this is a very serious issue and demanded strict action against those responsible.
“Our condolences to the families of the deceased. May God give them the strength to bear this sorrow,” it said.

According to reports, one of the reasons behind the death of patients is the lack of essential medicines, the party said.
“This is a very serious issue. Strict action should be taken against those who were negligent in this matter,” it said.

The government needs to work on the ground rather than focusing on publicity, the Congress said.
