India tells Canada to withdraw dozens of its diplomats

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the Financial Times said that New Delhi has set a deadline of Oct. 10 for their repatriation and has threatened to revoke the diplomatic immunity of those who remain beyond that date.

According to the report, the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi has a larger number of diplomats compared to India’s representation in Ottawa. This disparity is attributed to the substantial consular section required to assist relatives of the approximately 1.3 million Canadians who assert Indian heritage.

The report also said that Ottawa currently has 62 diplomats in India, and New Delhi has instructed them to reduce this number by 41 people, Anadolu Agency reported.

The reported move has unfolded amid tensions between the two nations after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged publicly on Sept. 18 that India was involved in the assassination of Sikh-Canadian leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia in June.

After Trudeau’s accusation, which also called for India to cooperate in an investigation into Nijjar’s killing, Canada expelled an Indian diplomat.

The Indian government reacted strongly, calling the allegations “absurd,” and in a tit-for-tat move expelled a Canadian representative.

In addition, New Delhi froze visa services for Canadians. The government issued a travel advisory of its own, telling Indian citizens that “in view of growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence in Canada, all nationals there and those contemplating travel are urged to exercise utmost caution.”

Premier League: Chelsea Stun Fulham With Quickfire Double

Goal-shy Chelsea finally found their cutting edge on Monday, striking twice in 82 seconds to earn a morale-boosting 2-0 win against Fulham as Mykhailo Mudryk finally got off the mark. Mauricio Pochettino’s injury-ravaged team travelled to the home of their near-neighbours just two points above the relegation zone and with only five goals to their name. Wasted early opportunities hinted at familiar failings but Ukrainian winger Mudryk scored his first goal in a Chelsea shirt in the 18th minute and Armando Broja doubled the lead in the blink of an eye.

The win lifts Chelsea to mid-table and eases the pressure on beleaguered new manager Pochettino, whose team had failed to score in their previous three Premier League games.

The former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss had pleaded for ruthlessness in front of goal and his nerves were settled by his team’s quickfire first-half double.

“It’s important for us to build our confidence and trust in ourselves,” Pochettino told Sky Sports.

“The performance was very good, I’m so happy for the players and in the end we got what we deserved.”

– Bright start –
Chelsea started brightly at Craven Cottage but failed to take advantage.

Albania forward Broja, making his first start since November 2022, blazed over from an offside position shortly after kick-off and the lively Mudryk also wasted a chance.

But the visitors got their reward in the 18th minute when a long ball from the back found Levi Colwill on the left.

Colwill passed to Mudryk, who controlled the ball on his chest before producing a composed finish for his first goal for the club since his big-money move from Shakhtar Donetsk in January.

Chelsea doubled their lead when Broja capitalised on a defensive mistake from Fulham centre-half Tim Ream, who gifted the ball to new signing Cole Palmer.

The ex-Manchester City man played the ball forward only for Ream to kick it against Broja and watch in horror as it rebounded into the net.

Chelsea, playing with zest, could have extended their lead further but Enzo Fernandez‘s strike flew narrowly wide.

The home side failed to muster a single shot on target in the first half, though Raul Jimenez went close with a header from Andreas Pereira’s outswinging corner as half-time approached.

Mudryk did not appear for the second half, replaced by defender Ian Maatsen.

Fulham looked more threatening after the break and manager Marco Silva threw on forwards Alex Iwobi and Carlos Vinicius within the first 10 minutes.

Vinicius headed over before a heart-in-mouth moment for Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who was able to reclaim the ball after his goal kick was intercepted by Pereira.

Chelsea went agonisingly close to extending their lead when Maatsen thundered a strike against the left upright, with Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno saving smartly from Fernandez’s follow-up.

Fulham had a wonderful chance to pull a goal back when Tom Cairney found fellow substitute Sasa Lukic in the six-yard box but he could only blast straight at Sanchez.

Chelsea held on relatively comfortably to climb to 11th place, above Fulham on goal difference.

Mexico president slams US military support for Ukraine

“…how much have they destined for the Ukraine war? 30 to 50 billion dollars for the war. Which is the most irrational thing you can have. And damaging,” Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said during his daily press conference on Monday.

He then pointed to a recent measure by US Congress, which decided to freeze further aid for Ukraine’s war against Russia after passing a stopgap funding bill to temporarily avert a US government shutdown.

“I was just looking at how now they’re not authorizing aid for the war in Ukraine… So, they do have to modify their strategy and learn respect,” he added.

On several occasions, the Mexican head of state has called on Washington to devote more funds to help economic development in Central America and the Caribbean and assist those countries in their efforts to curb the flow of migrants toward the United States.

Since the beginning of the Ukraine war last November, Lopez Obrador has sought to keep Mexico neutral, while supporting peace talks to end the conflict and criticizing Western military aid for Kyiv.

Russia has repeatedly said that the generous military aid extended to Ukraine by the US and its Western allies only prolongs the war and adds to the suffering of the Ukrainian people.

Moscow has also asserted that by helping out Ukraine against Russia, the West is waging a “proxy war” against Russian forces.

Speaking last month, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said through their support for Ukraine, Western countries were directly fighting against Moscow.

“You can call it anything you want, but they are fighting with us, they are straight-up fighting with us,” Lavrov said, adding, “We call it a hybrid war, but that doesn’t change things,” the top diplomat said.

He emphasized that Western countries are “de facto fighting against us, using the hands and bodies of Ukrainians.”

First Baby Born In Japan's Village In Over 20 Years, Celebrations Held

Japan Village, Battling Demographic Crisis, Celebrates Birth Of Baby In Over 20 Years

Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has warned that country is on the brink.

The birth of a baby is a joyous occasion for a family. The new life is a precious gift to the world, filling hearts with boundless joy and hope. But in Japan, the moment is extra special since the country is struggling to reverse its perennial low birth rates. And it got a chance to celebrate the occasion when Kuranosuke Kato was born in a small village named Ichinono, north of Osaka. He is now a year old, but the villagers still write poems about the boy, according to a Financial Times report.

When Kuranosuke appears to his elderly local fans, he is the centre of attention in a village that has just 53 residents. He is the first child born in Ichinono in more than two decades. The residents here have installed life-size dolls in the playground to fill a psychological gap.

The boy’s parents – Toshiki and Rie – are now planning for a brother or sister to keep their son company. They left the city a few years ago and are living in the countryside.

“I like the countryside. We can find an identity in the countryside. In the city there are a lot of rules, but this is more loose,” Mr Kato, who works as a consultant to IT companies, told Financial Times.

Toshiki and Rie are among the very few who have tied the knot in the last decades. Citing government’s data, FT said that almost 32 per cent of Japanese men and 24 per cent of women have never been married. The report also said that that annual number of marriages is half what it was in the 1970s.

In 2022, less than 800,000 babies were born in Japan and the indigenous population shrank by over half a million. The overall drop was the steepest decline recorded since 1968, when the government survey began, the ministry said.

The country has the world’s second oldest population, after tiny Monaco. In January, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida warned Japan was “on the verge of whether we can continue to function as a society”.

Kuranosuke’s parents are now worried whether the boy will be able to find friends his own age.

House Of Man Accused Of Raping Teen Near Ujjain To Be Demolished

House Of Man Accused Of Raping Teen Near Ujjain To Be Demolished

Bhopal:

The house of the man accused of raping a teenage girl in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain will be demolished tomorrow, as it was allegedly built illegally.

Videos of a 15-year-old girl, semi-naked and bleeding, going door-to-door for help, sparked outrage across the country last week.

The accused, Bharat Soni, an auto-rickshaw driver, was arrested in the case on Thursday. Bharat is currently in jail awaiting trial. His family has been living in the house on government land for years, the Ujjain Municipal Corporation said.

Municipal Commissioner Roshan Singh said that the land belongs to the government and therefore no notice is needed for its demolition. The municipal body will take action tomorrow in collaboration with the Madhya Pradesh police. Bharat was caught after a long investigation that involved reviewing footage from nearly 700 CCTV cameras.

“30-35 people were involved in the investigation. No one slept for three or four days,” Ajay Verma, a senior police officer, told NDTV.

‘Shockwaves’

On September 26, videos went viral on social media showing a minor girl, haggard, bleeding, and begging for help. A CCTV camera on Badnagar Road, about 15 km from Ujjain, captured the girl, draped in rags, going door-to-door, seeking assistance. The chilling footage, that sent shockwaves across the country, showed people shooing the girl away, as she approached them one after the other.

The minor girl, exhausted and traumatised with her body barely covered by a tattered cloth, aimlessly wandered the streets. Word of her agony reached an ashram not far from her location. A priest there, sensing that she had been sexually assaulted, draped her in a towel and rushed her to the nearby hospital. The medical examination confirmed her fears: she had been raped.

The girl’s injuries were severe, so she was rushed to Indore for specialised medical care. Police officers volunteered to donate blood when she needed it.

The accused, Bharat, was arrested three days later. The accused attempted to flee while reenacting the crime scene to collect evidence, including torn clothing but was swiftly caught.

“We reached the spot to recover the clothes worn by the girl. Sensing an opportunity, Bharat Soni tried to escape. Police personnel chased and caught him. During this, he fell on a cemented road, injuring his arms and legs,” the police said.

‘Should Be Hanged’

Bharat’s father has called for the death penalty for his son, while the local bar association has urged its members to refuse to represent him in court.

“It is a shameful act. Neither have I gone to hospital to meet him, no will I go to the police station or courts. My son has committed a crime, therefore he should be hanged,” his father said.

Repercussions

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who is gearing up for assembly elections in the state scheduled in November this year, vowed to prosecute the accused to the fullest extent of the law.

“The victim is the daughter of Madhya Pradesh. We will take care of her in every way. She is my daughter, as well as the state’s daughter and we will ensure that the accused gets stringent punishment,” he declared.

The horrific incident has provided additional fodder to opposition parties to question the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led state government which is under pressure for its dismal record on violence against women.

According to National Crime Records Bureau data, Madhya Pradesh, with 6,462 cases, reported the most number of rape incidents in the country in 2021. Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra have reported the highest number of cases of disappearance of women and girls between 2019 and 2021. Of all the reported rape cases, 50 per cent were crimes against minors, NCRB data states.

Iran to UN: NAM rejects use of force against countries on pretext of fighting terror

Iran’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations Zahra Ershadi said in a statement that the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) condemns all forms of terrorism, but war on terror must not be used as a pretext to use force against countries.

The statement came on Monday on behalf of the movement before the Sixth Committee of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on “Measures to eliminate international terrorism.”

“The Non-Aligned Movement unequivocally rejects terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, as well as all acts, methods, and practices of terrorism wherever, by whomever, against whomsoever committed,” the statement said.

“The Non-Aligned Movement rejects actions and measures, the use or threat of use of force, imposed or threatened to be imposed, by any State against any Non-Aligned Member Country under the pretext of combating terrorism or to pursue its political aims, including by directly or indirectly categorizing them as terrorism sponsoring-States,” it added.

The statement said NAM totally rejects the unilateral preparation of lists accusing states of allegedly supporting terrorism, adding such acts are unlawful and constitute a form of psychological and political terrorism.

“Terrorism cannot and should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization or ethnic group, and these attributions should not be used to justify terrorism or counter-terrorism measures,” it added.

It also said terrorism should not be equated with the struggle of peoples under colonial or alien domination and foreign occupation, for self-determination and national liberation.

The statement also urged Member States to refrain from extending political, diplomatic, moral, or material support for terrorism.

“States should also ensure that refugee status or other legal statuses not be abused by the perpetrators, organizers or facilitators of terrorist acts and that claims of political motivation by them are not recognized as grounds for refusing requests for their extradition.”

It also expressed concerns over the growing threat posed by foreign terrorist fighters who travel to a State other than their State of residence or nationality to commit or participate in terrorist acts and underlined the importance of United Nations capacity-building in the most affected regions.

Moreover, the statement said, NAM voices deep concerns over the “misinterpretation” and “misrepresentation” of religions by terrorist groups to justify terrorism in an effort to instill hatred in the hearts and minds of the youth.

“In this regard, it is imperative to effectively counter the narratives of terrorism through a comprehensive and international framework with an effective and comprehensive method aimed at addressing all its root causes, including through the engagement of community leaders and clerics from all denominations.”

The statement called for an international summit conference under the auspices of the UN to formulate a joint organized response of the international community to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including identifying its root causes.

“We further reiterate the importance of the conclusion of a Comprehensive Convention for Combating International Terrorism,” it said.
